《The Thing About Apholie: A Wolfwalkers Fanfiction》Chapter 2: The Den

Abigail was greeted with the sight of really made this place unlike anything she had ever seen. The massive waterfall in the middle of a giant hole down to anyone's death. Stretching in front and behind it was a wide ring of stone. The right side had been partially destroyed, but it was enough to stop anymore from making it behind the waterfall. The left side, however was in good shape and was wide and strong enough for someone to walk over to the wolf den.
Apholie was going to be in there for sure.
Abigail began her walk across the side. Despite the fact that she adored the scenery, she was paranoid that the ground underneath her was going to crack and give way.
She was the kind of person to question everything.
After a few minutes, she arrived at the entrance to the wolf den. A cavern that stretched into the dark, except for the hundreds of lit-up carvings on the walls on every space available. Shoving her fear away, Abigail began her descent into the den. Her fear was threatening to come back, but it slowly faded the further she went in. The hay on the floor crunched underneath her boots with every step. She marvelled at the countless different symbols on the walls, most of them she had no idea what they meant. Which was good, she loved being clueless.
The more information in her head, the better.
Finally, she arrived inside the den. The ceiling height went beyond her head, but it wasn't too high that you couldn't see the top. The room expanded back to have a decent amount of space to move.
Well, if it wasn't for Apholie's mother, Gwendalyn, sleeping while sitting down in the middle of the room. Apholie was sleeping in her arms.

Abigail always thought that this was too adorable. Then the realisation hit her that they must still be wolves. Their human forms were sleeping after all.
Suddenly, she heard they sound of panting and lots of fast, running footsteps. She turned around and waited, knowing what was about to happen.
(Three,) she said in her head.
The footsteps grew louder.
(Two)
They grew louder ever more.
(One)
A large pack of blackish-grey wolves filled in entrance to the den. It didn't take long for them to notice Abigail standing in the middle of the room. They instantly ran towards her, jumping all around her, barking happily and licking her face.
"ALRIGHT, alright!, that's enough!" she said in between laughter. Abigail looked back at the entrance and saw two brown wolves enter the den. One was far bigger than the other. The smaller wolf was about the same size as a wolf in the rest of the pack and had a slightly lighter shade of coat.
That wolf was Apholie.
The wolf ran at Abigail and swirled around her, whining and barking happily.
"Yes, yes, hi Apholie," Abigail said, bending down to stroke her fur. The pack circled around the room and finding their spots against the walls.
Abigail's instincts knew what was about to happen next. She got up and allowed Apholie's mother to walk past. Abigail headed to the entrance to give them some extra space.
They were going to need it.
The two wolves went on either side of where their human forms were sleeping.
Time to see some magic happen she thought to herself. She had never actually seen a wolfwalker (more specifically Apholie) return to their human form before. The two wolves looked like they were going to leap into the air.

And they did do that, but there was more to it than that.
As they jumped, they turned yellow. The bells and magic backdrop returned. The wolves fell into their human bodies and disappeared, leaving the face of a wolf behind on each. It very quickly faded. Apholie was the first one to open her eyes.
"ABIGAIL!!!" she yelled, as she leapt off her now-awake mother and squeezed Abigail.
"Hi, Apholie," she said, chuckling and slowly peeling her off.
"Sorry I've been a wolf for so long," she said, stepping back a little. "Mami and I got a little lost on our way home last night,"
"It's fine," said Abigail. "You would've been waiting for hours. I just arrived when you got here."
Gwendalyn had opened her eyes while they were talking. Her hair was the same colour as Apholie's, but much more big and frizzy. She was like the exact picture of Apholie all grown up.
"Pleasure to have you back here, Abigail," she said to her calmly. "Has Apholie shown you the new part of the den?"
"I don't think she ha-" Abigail starts, but got quickly interrupted by Apholie.
"OOOHH, YEAH!!!" she said, excitement flashing through her voice and taking Abigail's hand. "You're going to love it! Come on!"
Apholie beckoned for the wolves to follow her out of the den and ran out, taking Abigail with her. The wolves quickly obeyed, stampeding out of the den and following Abigail and Apholie.
"Why in the Lord's name are we running?" she said, keeping up with Abigail easily. "We have a pack of wolves with us!"
She slowed down a little so the pack would catch up. She stopped by one of them and leapt on.
"Come on!" she yelled, laughing. "Take your pick!"
Abigail slowed down and leapt on a wolf next to Apholie. The two of them laughed and cheered as they dashed through the forest, with Apholie the guiding the pack to the new area of the den.

Synergy
Dear Inspector, Please accept this letter as my formal resignation from being a Player. Hey! Laugh all you want, but I had to try. With no rules down here, who's to say that I can't resign? Anyway, my reasons are simple: I'm neither a gamer nor a hero. You got the wrong person for the job. Sure, the pay is decent and I could pretty much live like a king if, you know, I wasn't so busy trying to survive. I have major concerns about the demonic dagger bound to my soul too. Come to think of it, I've never asked to be transported to this fantasy land either and would like you to return me home, thank you very much. I don't want supernatural powers, I don't want to complete quests after quests, and I don't want to be your test subject anymore. What? I'm not whining, you're whining. Stop making excuses and let me leave already. Thank you for your understanding, and I hope you'll find a better replacement after I'm gone for good. Sincerely,Randel, the Mad Painter What to expect from Synergy: --> Some GameLit elements are presented subversively. If you want the protagonist to “play the game” properly, this might not be the story for you.--> No filler chapters; the story's structure is already plotted out. It's going to have six story arcs.--> Character development happens slowly, over many chapters. Don't expect a perfect protagonist right off the bat.--> Some romance, but it will never be the main focus.--> Humor and dark elements in equal measure, but not to the extent that I’d label this story as “Comedy” or “Grimdark”. ... and lots and lots of Author's Notes. See you on the other side of the portal!
