《Out With The Old, In With The New》Chapter 28

After falling from a deathly height that'd kill anyone at the first impact, Jade forces herself up and leans on the side of the canyon.
Jade: Shit...
She looks down at her leg that's so shattered you can see the shards of bone sticking out from all directions. Jade takes off her jersey, rips it into pieces, and ties her leg with it. She finds the mini bag that has her now broken phone, a few granola bars, spilled coffee, and a flashlight.
Jade: Dammit! Ok, I have 4 granola bars. If I only take two small bites for breakfast, one for lunch, and one for dinner, I should be able to make these last a while. But first, I need to find some help.
Jade tries to climb up the canyon but falls back down. Since she's figured out she can't go back the way she came, Jade limps very slowly down the gorge and forces herself to keep going even though she's in pain.
Every time she says she's gonna give up, she remembers why she's struggling in the first place. To get back to her sisters again. During the day she makes herself fight to get out of the canyon. Jade keeps limping and limping no matter how much the pain affects her. No matter how hungry she is. No matter how cold she knows it's gonna be. She keeps going.
Night falls quickly and the cold quickly begins to get to her. Goosebumps, the feeling of knowing there's no cover, no warmth somehow makes it worse. Jade takes a bite of a granola bar and puts the rest back in the bag.
She falls asleep uncomfortably against a rock and curls herself into a ball to try and stay warm. The freezing cool air would be something anyone would long for in the Summer. But if she doesn't get out of here soon, she won't ever get to experience Summer ever again.
Jade decides to not sleep, but instead, keeps persevering and goes on in the dead of night. The aching pain in her leg was too much to bear. The throbbing pain in her head finally caught up to her.
She touches the back of her head, and even though she can't see, she knows its blood. Jade continues with blurred vision and a thirst to prove all her haters wrong. At any minute it feels like she's going to pass out. Die from starvation. Pass out from the lack of water. The willpower she has to go on is very strong.
No matter what, she's determined to find her way back home. When daylight breaks, Jade is relieved to see the sunlight because that means warmth is coming soon. When the sun comes up, Jade takes two bites of the granola bar and places it back in her bag.
Jade: Keep going, Jade. You got it.
She keeps encouraging herself to keep going and eventually makes it so far that she can see a town by climbing on top of a rock and staring in the distance. It's now been three weeks since she first fell into the canyon. She knows everyone thinks she's dead. She also knows that they're going to hold a "death" ceremony, but that just makes her even more determined to make it back alive.
Instead of finding the town though, she comes to a road. Three fucking weeks of pain, struggling, and hunger for a single fucking road that probably won't lead anywhere.
Jade stares down the road and the last thing she sees is a truck pulling to a stop before everything goes black and she feels herself fall to the ground. Two guys get out of the truck and start trying to wake her up.

Oliver: What do you think happened?
Henry: I don't know, but it doesn't look like anyone else is around. Check that bag she's got.
Oliver grabs her bag and checks what's inside.
Oliver: Her phone's busted. How'd a kid even get out here?
Henry: As I said, I don't know. I feel like I've seen her face before...
Oliver: Let's just get her in the truck. She needs help.
Henry gives his keys to Oliver and picks Jade up. He puts her in the back of the truck and lays her down on some blankets and pillows. He wets a rag and begins cleaning the small cuts on Jade's body. After about a half-hour, Oliver pulls to a stop in front of a medical tent in what looks to be downtown or somewhere.
Henry runs her into one of the tents and the staff quickly begin to start trying to help her. A few police officers interrogate Oliver and Henry and when they figure the two don't know anything, they let them wait outside the tent.
It's been two days and Jade is still unconscious. Henry comes back daily to see if she's awake but is sent away crestfallen. They decide to go back again on the following day, and to their surprise, Jade is sipping on some water.
Jade: Th...Thank you...
Her voice is hoarse from the lack of water, but the two guys can see the look of gratitude in her eyes. She looks down at her leg and sees it's still shattered and that her head is still throbbing.
Jade: I see...you're low...on resources.
Henry: Sorry... Times are a bit...rough right now.
Oliver: What happened? How'd you get out here alone?
Jade swallows the water that's in her mouth and tells them everything. Their dad, court, Jacob, everything. After two hours of speaking, Jade goes quiet and drinks the water that's left in her cup.
Oliver: Damn... I'm sorry...
Jade: S'not your fault...but thanks.
Henry: We can give you a ride back, y'know. The trip will take a week though.
Jade: That's alright. I just hope there's gonna be food.
Oliver: Trust me, there WILL be food.
Jade: Thank, God!
They all laugh and Jade starts eating the food that the nurses left for her.
Jade: What's the date?
Oliver: It is...December, 19.
Jade: Ah, is that so? Happy birthday to me...
Henry: It's your birthday?
Jade: Yeah... Tough luck for me, huh?
Oliver: Well, I think you're gonna enjoy this.
Oliver takes out a bag from his bookbag and hands it to Jade. She opens it and reveals a new phone. Jade looks at Oliver and starts crying.
Jade: I-I can't take this.
Oliver: Kid, you need a new phone anyway. Think of it as a favor from me to you. Ok?
Jade: O-Ok! Thank you, mister...?
Oliver: Oliver. My friend here is Henry.
Henry: Hiya! You are?
Jade: Jade. Jade Collins.
Henry's face goes pale and he pulls out his phone quicker than anyone even notices that his hand was reaching for his pocket. He pulls up a news article and shows it to Oliver.
When he reads it his face also goes pale. They turn their heads to face Jade and Henry holds up his phone to compare the picture on his phone to Jade's face.
Oliver: The missing girl... aren't you?
Henry: You've been missing for two months...
Jade: Damn. It's been that long?
Jade gasps and takes Henry's phone to check the school's game schedule. She screams when she sees that they have a game in three days.

Jade: We have a Soccer game in three days! How long to get back to East Side Paris?
Henry: About three days.
Jade: Perfect! Can we PLEASE leave tonight!? PLEASE!? PLEASE, PLEASE!?
Oliver: I don't know...
Jade: Please...? Soccer means everything to me...
Henry and Oliver's exchange of silent looks shows they agree on leaving that night. They wait for nightfall and sneak Jade out of her tent and into the back of their truck. Henry starts driving and doesn't show any sign of stopping after he fills up the gas tank.
Jade sits in the back eating medical food and trying not to pass out in fear of getting a concussion and dying. Those three days would be the most tiring of these three lives, but at least things will get a little better. Yeah, a little bit better. If you call coming home to see your little sister in the hospital with a stab wound over her chest, not being able to play Soccer, and having a hate-love mostly not knowing relationship with a boy better, then yeah, things are about to look fantastic.
The first day was the easiest, to be honest. No problems, only two stops to piss and to fill up on food. It was a swift drive from point 1 to point 2 where they have a rest break. Nothing is said for the whole night while Henry watches for half the night while Oliver sleeps, then vice versa when they switch.
The second day was a little bit harder. It starts raining so hard you can barely see a thing. They're forced to pull over and wait it out. The storm passes in the next two hours and they're back on the road before they can spell Mississippi. All they've got now is two towns, the main bridge to enter Paris, and a few neighborhoods then Jade will be home.
Even though she doesn't want to, she can't stop herself from thinking about Jacob. The way he talked to her like she was...normal. The way he made her feel accepted. His smile. The way he would smile at her with those dimples. The way he calmed her down, listened to her, gave her a place to feel safe... It was all so surreal. So... So amazing.
How his arms would wrap around her making her feel safe. Like nothing could hurt her. But at the same time... she remembers what he said about her. He promised to have her back always, but he didn't. Everyone makes mistakes, but to her, this was so much more than a little white lie.
Sports is her life. Without that... What's left? What's left without it? Well, there's always Jacob. Jade shakes the thoughts off, but they don't stay away for long. There's always Jacob's food, his smile, the way he lights up when he finally perfects a hat trick... There isn't a minute when Jade doesn't think, "What if I listened to him? Heard him out?" It doesn't matter now anyway. At least she's on her way home, right?
The third day approaches at an annoyingly slow rate. You can see the Eiffel Tower from the road you're on. Jade starts thinking about Jacob again (not that she can do anything about it) not knowing that he's thinking about her too. He's currently getting ready for the Soccer game.
Jacob hasn't said a word all week to any of his "teammates". Anytime they try to talk to him, he shoves them out the way and goes to just mind his own business. Everyone's in the locker room getting ready, laughing, and having fun. Except for Jacob whose main objective is to get in and get out. At least that would've been the M.O, if Brian, Derek, and Shawn would leave him alone already.
Jacob takes a green necklace with the initials 'J.C' out of his locker and it's snatched out of his hand in the blink of an eye. He slams his locker and looks at Shawn like he wants to kill him.
Jacob: GIVE THAT TO ME NOW!
Shawn: Chill, bro, I just wanna see it.
Shawn begins studying the necklace with a look of disgust on his face and passes it to Brian.
Shawn: Green is a disgusting color. Why didn't you get it in gold? Or silver?
Jacob: GIVE IT!
Brian: Bro, chill! We just wanna look.
Elliot: Stop being an ass and give it back!
Brian: Why does he want this piece of shit so bad anyway?
Jacob: IT'S NOT SHIT!
He tries to grab it but Brian throws it to Derek.
Derek: Holy shit! He's got initials engraved on it!
Jacob: GIVE IT TO ME!
Jacob lunges at him but gets held back by Brian and Shawn.
Brian: What the fuck is up with you!? I thought we were chill!
Derek: Ever since you started hanging with those freaks, you changed man.
Jacob gets out of Brian and Shawn's hold, grabs Derek by his head, and starts bashing his head against the lockers. Blood smears all over the locker and a few splatters end up on the surrounding members trying to pull Jacob off of him. Their attempts are useless seeing as it just makes him angrier and he bashes Derek's head harder.
He finally stops when Elliot and Quinn manage to get him off and throw him on the floor.
Quinn: THIS TEAM IS YOUR LIFE! YOU'RE GONNA FUCK UP YOUR FUTURE!
Jacob: NO! SOCCER AND ONLY SOCCER IS MY LIFE! DON'T YOU GET IT, MAN!? WITHOUT HER I HAVE NO FUTURE!
He gets up and takes the necklace out of Derek's hand. Jacob stomps on his wrist so hard you could hear the bone crack. Jacob puts the necklace on and leaves the locker room leaving Brian and Shawn staring at Derek's unconscious body in horror, and everyone else looking at the swinging locker door in shock.
While the bench warmers of the team clean everything up to cover for Jacob, most of the players decide to report the incident after the game. Whether they do it before or after doesn't matter. They have never won a single game in their lives. This team was formed three years ago. Jacob has been on the team the same amount of time and they've never won.
When everyone gets into the field, Jacob receives dirty looks from everyone except Elliot and Quinn who give him a nod. The referee call Jacob up to deliver a speech seeing as he was nominated beforehand to do so.
He trembles in front of the microphone but begins speaking anyway while fiddling with his, well, her necklace.
Jacob: Uh, what's up?
The stadium goes deathly quiet and all you can hear is the sound of Jacob nervously breathing into the microphone.
Jacob: I'm only gonna say this. I am a worthless, pathetic, poor excuse of a man. Liam, you know it's true, so don't say a damn thing.
Liam sits back down and grumbles something about beating his ass later on the video call with Amethyst.
Jacob: I turned my back on the only person besides my family who had my back. She needed me, and I let her down. I did more than let her down. Hell, I killed her. If she were here now, she'd tell me, "Go kick-ass before I kick yours." Looking at it now, I know for a fact she would.
He and the crowd chuckle and he delivers the last bit of his speech.
Jacob: It's been two fucking months. She's looking down on me wishing I'd get my ass beat right now. Y'know we found her jersey... Not much good now, but...yeah. But like I said, she's looking down at me wanting to beat me.
???: Correction: Looking AT you wanting to beat you!
Jade stands at the entrance to the indoor stadium. Heavy breathing, torn clothes, cuts on her face, a shattered leg that's purple in coloration, and her head looking as though it's seen better days.
Jacob: You... You're alive...
Jade: Yeah... Now if you don't mind... I need medical help... Please?
Jade finally lets herself give in and collapses. The med team all run and load her onto a handheld stretcher and speed dial an ambulance. Everyone runs down from the bleachers and Jacob forgets all about the game and goes with them.
Brian: Where are you going!?
Jacob: To the hospital! Quinn, fill in for me!
Quinn: But- But I'm a benchie!
Jacob: You got it, bro!
He runs out of the stadium to Matteo's can and they trail the ambulance to the hospital. When they pull up in the hospital's parking lot everyone stays quiet still not believing that Jade's alive. They make their way into the hospital in the quietest way possible and nobody makes a single sound.
Everyone, sans Liam, sits in the waiting room and tries not to cry, but the tears fall anyway. Liam tells Amethyst about Jade and holds her while she cries. It's been 3 hours now, but they can finally go see her now.
Against the testament, everyone agrees for Jacob to go first and since he doesn't want to move on his own, Ethan and Matteo take the liberty of yanking him out of the chair and pushing him to Jade's hospital room. He keeps struggling and trying to get away, but they just push him harder. Ethan and Matteo push him into Jade's room and close the door.
Jacob: I'll kill you both!
Ethan: Try it! I dare you!
Jacob sticks the middle finger up at the door and sits in the chair next to Jade's bed. He reaches out to brush some hair out of her face and pulls his hand back when she starts to wake up.
Jade looks around and sees that she's in a hospital and groans. Her eyes land on Jacob and her face goes from annoyed to a scowl full of hatred. She tries to reach the button to buzz a nurse, but a sharp pain shoots through her leg that's hanging from a leg sling.
Jade sits back in bed and glares at the door. Jacob can't come up with anything to say, so he just starts with an awkward laugh.
Jacob: S-So... C-Crazy weather, huh?
Jade: Yeah, with a 99% chance of fowl men blowing in through the door.
Jacob: Look, I'm sorry-
Jade: Oh! Oh, you're sorry!? And I'm guessing you're thinking that's just gonna fix everything, huh!?
Jacob: Maybe...?
Jade: Get out.
Jacob: C'mon, I-
Jade: Get. Out.
Jacob: I'm sorry, ok?
Jade: GET OUT! GET THE FUCK OUT!
Jacob decides to leave before she starts throwing stuff, but decides to try again later, so he just stays in the hospital's waiting room. Everyone visits Jade in pairs of two and leaves after everyone has had a turn.
Jacob decides to stay at the hospital while everyone else goes home. He mentally prepared himself to try again.
Jacob: You got this, bro! I hope...
He chickens out and doesn't go back to the room, but decides to stay in the waiting room. Meanwhile, everyone else is sitting in the living room making bets.
Ethan: Strikeout when? Two days. Go!
Matteo: I'mma be nice. A week.
Liam: Today. Today alone.
Jason: I give him an hour.
Katie: Have you no faith in that man?
Caleb: Not even a little.
Sapphire: Damn. That's crazy.
Liam: Well, I'm gonna get to bed. I'm tired.
Everyone agrees and says goodnight to Caleb and Katie. This leaves Katie and Caleb, once again, sitting in the living room alone together.
Caleb: I told you she'd make it.
Katie: Yeah. You did.
Caleb: Soooo...
Katie: So...?
Caleb: How about that date?
Katie: You got any new material?
Caleb: Well, not at the moment. But, do you take I'll get back to you later?
Katie: I guess so?
Caleb: Then we've got a date tomorrow night.
He grabs her hand and takes her up to his room (not like that nasties) to get ready for bed. Caleb gives Katie one of his shirts and a pair of shorts. She changes into the clothes thinking he was decent enough to turn around, but when she goes to put her clothes on the dresser she sees Caleb staring very intensely at her with hungry eyes.
Caleb: Very nice, baby.
Katie: Don't call me that.
Caleb: You never said you didn't like it.
Katie: Sh-Shut up, stupid! It is 10:45 PM. That means it is too damn late for your dumbassery!
Caleb: That isn't a word, dumbass.
Katie: Yes it is.
Katie goes out to the balcony and looks out over the city lighting up with so much light from all the buildings it's surreal. Caleb gets up from the bed and hugs Katie from behind.
Caleb: You've had a long day. It's bedtime.
Katie: Not tired.
Caleb: Hmmm...yes you are.
Katie: I'm not.
Caleb: You are so.
Katie: I'm not tired, ok?
Caleb: Talk to me then. What's bothering you?
Katie: (Sigh) I'm not cut out for this.
Caleb: For what?
Katie: Anything! The 127, looking after the girls, trying to find a decent job and place... I'm not cut out for being alive. I can't fucking do this...
