《Love And War - A Fortnite Story No.4》14 - Subconscious Prison

Meanwhile back on the Mothership, in the prison section, Midas paces around his and Dark Jonesy's cell. His anxiety was spiking and causing his golden touch to climb up his arms. If it gets any worse his power could reach the taser on his back and he would get electrocuted.

"C'mon Midas. Keep it together."

He leans against the wall, his breathing beginning to sound more coarse and shaky.

"It's okay. They're okay."

It was no use. No matter how many times he tries to convince himself that his family down on the island was okay, his anxiety only continued to rise.

"They...they have to be okay..."

A few aliens patrolling the area meet up with another alien outside his cell. He listens in on the conversation.

"Sir, I'm afraid to report we've lost contact with Kymera 4186."

"The one who was disguised as the gold guy?"

"Yes."

"Damn. And we thought he'd last longer."

Midas breathes a heavy sigh of relief, glad that the imposter had been taken care of.

"To be fair sir that Kymera in particular was only used for being disguised as a human. They're not the fighting type."

"Still, how many victims did it claim before its untimely death?"

"Nearly half of those... copies of that blond guy, and the whole of that gold guy's family. We're unsure if the blond one was caught, but for now we're going to assume he's gone too."

"Good, good. Now as for extracting the gold one's power, the machine won't be ready for another two weeks. So for now, keep guarding and testing him."

"Yes sir!"

From good news to bad news...

The tears Midas had been desperately trying to hold in for the past few days finally came flooding out as reality hits him;

Jules, Jonesy and the rest of his family were dead...

And he couldn't be there to save them...

Not knowing what to do, he slides down to the floor and buries his head in his arms as tears stream down his face.

He wanted comfort...

He craved Jones' comfort.

He wanted his strong arms around him, reassuring him everything would be okay...

But now he was gone...

All of them were...

Back in Pleasant Park...

The storm continues to worsen outside as nighttime rolls over the island. And yet, stars continue to shine through the blustery winds despite the awful weather.

The beautiful stars however couldn't help but remind Jones of Midas, knowing how much he liked the dead flames.

The lonely blond had been doing nothing but crying into his pillow... for hours...

His face was stained with tears, dry and fresh, with his eyes going red due to how long he had been going for. He was stricken with guilt and regret.

*sniff*

"What am I supposed to do now..? Everyone I know is dead..."

Getting up from his bed Jones shuffles over to his desk where he left the note written by Midas that Bunker Jonesy found. He stares at it, going over the info noted on it.

"Oh Midas... you've always been so smart...I wish you were here to help me..." He mutters, a broken smile on his face.

He folds the note up again... only to notice there was more writing on the other side.

"Huh?"

Turning the note over he finds a long message on the back written much neater in professional ink. Intrigued, Jones begins reading it;

"My dear Jones. When I met you, I had no idea what to do with myself. This crush on you only began to grow the more time I spent with you. And while I'm aware the concept of 'love at first sight' doesn't really exist... that's just how it felt when I first laid eyes on your beautiful face.

But as of late, for some reason, I've been having the hardest time trying to find the best way to ask you out. With you still struggling to move on from Janice, I was thinking 'maybe he's not ready for another relationship'.

I'm not blaming you at all if that's what you're thinking. What I'm trying to say is if you're not ready yet, that's okay.

But since I'm writing this I might as well ask anyway;

I was going to ask it back when I finished off your room and we were talking, but the invasion brought all my plans to a standstill. Plus, I was lacking the confidence to ask, and still am.

So, after this invasion has been dealt with, would you be interested in going out on a date with me? I would be very happy if you said yes. If not, I understand. Wouldn't be the first time I fucked up a relationship and got rejected by someone.

I'll await your response... whenever I gain the courage to give this love letter to you of course.

- Yours truly, forever and always, Midas."

Jones' tears of regret slowly turn into tears of joy.

This whole time, for the past few months, Midas had been trying to ask him out. But he couldn't find the confidence, all because he was afraid of being rejected...

"I guess even a fearless leader like Midas has his own embarrassing fears he'd rather not share with others..." He chuckles lightly, his eyes reading the letter again.

Jones smiles to himself, a blush of red going over his cheeks. He already knew his answer to Midas' burning question. But it wouldn't have an impact if he said it now when his lover wasn't around to hear him say it.

"I'll come find you soon Midas. But first...I have something that needs taking care of..."

Clutching the letter, Jones returns to his bed and lies down on it. He knew what he had to do. Because if he didn't, his fears and guilty conscience would continue to hold him back.

"Here we go..."

With his confidence regained Jones sighs and closes his eyes, ready to confront the creature in his mind and destroy it.

------------

He opens them again to find himself in his subconscious again where Fear lurked, at least that's the nickname he gave it. But this time he wasn't afraid. He was ready to face it.

"Alright Fear. Where are ya?" He calls out, clenching his fists. "There's nowhere to hide in here. Trust me, I'd know."

Surprisingly, it's really quiet. No reply comes from it.

"Huh. Maybe I scared it away with my presence?"

Jones snickers at his own comment.

"Imagine that. Fear getting scared off by the one it's meant to haunt."

Jones jumps, startled by the sudden response, and turns around to find Fear, taking the form of Slone, stands behind him.

"Ah. There you are..."

Fear questions, its white empty eyes gazing back and Jonesy.

"No I'm not. I'm doing this because I have to overcome my fears...my regret...my guilt...I don't want to be a coward anymore!"

Fear chuckles deeply, manifesting itself and Jones a sword each.

Fear leaps towards Jones, bringing their weapon down on him. However he quickly reacts and blocks it, pushing them away. Then, goes charging headfirst after them with his weapon ready.

The creature growls, extending its arm and clutching Jones by his waist. He swiftly cuts the arm off with the sword, only for their other arm to grab him too.

It sighs, its slit off arm reattaching to its body.

Fear brings Jones closer to it. He immediately begins hacking away at its body, swinging the sword rapidly. But no matter how many times he slices its body, it doesn't die. It just regenerates.

Jones glares at it in anger.

"Midas isn't stupid! He's one of the smartest men alive!" He yells, continuing to helplessly cut off the creature's limbs to no success. "Tormenting me is one thing, but insulting Midas is too far!"

Fear drops Jones onto the ground with a resounding thud, the swords being manifested away in the progress.

Tentacles erupt from their back, grabbing Jones, as Fear's form grows bigger and bigger.

Their form collapses on top of him as he struggles to break free, consuming and trapping him in his deepest fears.

-----------

As Jones stands up, Fear's maximize form surrounds him in all angles. There was no escape now, he was stuck in their domain. However, even if he couldn't identify them anywhere he could still hear its voice.

"If you fail to defeat me Jones, I won't hesitate in keeping you trapped here... causing you to fall into an eternal coma in the real world."

"Eternal coma..?"

The voice fades away. Jones is about to call after it, but a kick from behind in the back stops him. Turning around, he blocks the punches of the blacked out figure of a woman. Everything but their left eye was coated in black. The colour of the eye struck a nerve within Jones;

It was turquoise blue...

Just like Janice's...

"Jan?"

It roars, kicking Jones in his chest.

He rolls onto the ground, looking up at his 'ex-wife'. He knew immediately that this wasn't his lost love...but a figment of his inner demons;

In particular, his Grief.

It just took the form of Janice to represent itself better.

And if he wanted to escape and win, he'd have to go through all of them one by one.

It also meant suffering through hallucinated memories of his past.

"Okay... this might take longer, and be tougher, than I thought..."
