《The Island's End- A Fortnite Story No.5》4 - I'm Not Oro

20 minutes later...
Finishing off the last of his steak Midas hums in satisfaction, laying down his cutlery and wiping his mouth with a napkin.
"Mmm, that was lovely. I don't remember the last time I went out and had a meal like this." He mutters to himself. "What about you Jones?"
Midas looks across the table to his boyfriend, who finished his meal 5 minutes quicker than him, while he fishes out a toothpick.
"Definitely one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Steak isn't usually that cheap to get, let alone dine for in a restaurant." He admits, finishing off a second glass of wine. "But I suppose in your case it's not that hard to come by."
"Well at least I'm wise enough to not squander and abuse my power." Midas points out, also finishing a third glass of wine. "Had this been given to someone else... The person could destroy their lives with this power."
"You've got a point. Someone else wielding your power, a bad person at that...it would probably not end well for others."
Midas nods slightly, a hand on his head. He felt slightly dizzy, probably from having a little too much wine.
"Hey Midas? Ya think we could have dessert too?"
He notices Midas' dazed expression, rethinking his sentence.
"...Or do you wanna get home and go to bed?"
He nods at that last sentence.
"I'll get you something on the way home. How's that sound?"
"Fine with me."
Midas pulls out his wallet and takes out a £100 note, plus an extra £50, and passes it to Jonesy.
"Here. I don't mean to be a dick but you wouldn't mind using my money to pay for the bill would you?"
Jones smiles, patting his hand and taking the money.
"No worries. Sit tight."
Midas wearily begins stacking the plates and putting the cutlery on top, ready to be taken away. He gazes out the window they happened to be sitting next to, and notices something...weird.
A purple rift with red beams circling it was sat outside, twitching and flickering rapidly. Midas rubs his eyes and looks again just to be sure he wasn't having some kind of drunken hallucination.
"What the hell is that thing?"
It suddenly begins flickering uncontrollably and opens up, releasing a flash of orange clouds and consuming the restaurant.

--------
Midas opens his weary eyes, his drunken state trying to adjust to what on earth just happened. People's panicked voices were audible everywhere. His head was in a spin. He couldn't think straight.
"Fuck...And I thought this date would go without any further interruptions..."
Somehow, he landed on the soft carpet floor. So he pushes himself to stand up with a slight wobble using the nearby chair for support.
"Midas!"
Jones dashes over, panicked and worried.
"Jones. You're safe, thank god."
"What happened? There was a flash of orange light a-and everything's all cloudy now and-"
"Hey hey. It's okay. I'll get out out of this mess." Midas reassures him, taking his hands.
Midas finds the strength to start running around the place despite the orange smoky atmosphere clouding his vision, keeping a tight grip on Jones' hand. Because of that, they quickly bump into someone...or someTHING...
"Mmph. Sorry about that -... huh?"
A figure with a cube for a head turns around and raises a bat with more small cubes on it, ready to bring it down upon Jones.
"Oh jeez!!"
However, Midas is faster, and grabs it as it reaches the hair on his head.
"No. Not on my watch."
He kicks them away in their stomach, or what he thinks it is at least. Then let's out a huff as dishevelled looking Cube monsters and soldiers surround them.
"What on earth are those things?!" Jones shouts, gripping on to Midas tight.
He rolls his eyes. Jones saved him from literal aliens all on his own, proved himself to not be a coward...and here he was hugging his boyfriend tight like a baby in front of creatures that looked no better than the kymera aliens.
"Jones, it's okay. I'm a man who comes prepared."
Midas tosses Jones his pair of revolvers from his pocket.
"Take my weapons to defend yourself and other civilians still in here."
"What about you?!"
Midas smirks a little, stretching out an arm and open his hand.
"I have my own way of dealing with this."
With a bright glow and a click of Midas' fingers a glittering gold staff appears in his grasp, alerting the cube soldiers. His outfit even switches to Oro's one as well in the process.
"That staff! That outfit! You have the power of King Oro!!" One soldier yells out. "It's him guards! Get him!"

Spinning the staff Midas slams the bottom into the ground, unleashing a devastating attack on the cube monsters in a flash of light. Then the boys break formation and separate to deal with the monsters.
Midas ends up dealing with the soldiers while Jones gets the monsters.
"The very fact you still live is a disgrace! And now you pass your powers on to a human?!" The same soldier yells, clashing a sword-like weapon with Midas' sceptre.
"Ngh! What are you going on about?"
"Don't play dumb with the cubes Oro! Just wait until we tell her majesty about you still being alive after all these years!"
Midas growls, catching the soldier off guard and hitting it with a beam of light coming from his sceptre. He then slams the staff on the floor, sending a shockwave of energy at them, knocking them out. He points the staff at the guard talking to him.
"For your information, soldier, I am NOT Oro. I am simply the only person left alive who bares his power."
The guard scrambles to his feet, baring his weapon at Midas as the others begin to wake up.
"Hear this Oro. Consider this island your final resting place. Because when our Queen is done with her work, this island will become a cube paradise where the light will never shine again."
As the sideways rift begins to fall apart the Cubes monsters left that Jones hadn't defeated disperse into dust. The Cube guards gather together and the one Midas was talking to pulls out a small cube.
"Farewell for now, Oro."
And they teleport away.
Midas breathes a few heavy sighs of relief, opening his palm and letting his staff disappear. Jones runs over, smiling a little.
"Midas!"
He wraps his arms around him, Midas embracing his comforting hug.
"Are you okay? Are you hurt?" He asks, feeling the blond's face for any bruises or cuts. "How are the civilians?"
"I'm okay." He chuckles. "As for everyone else, I think they all evacuated to a safer area. Loving the outfit by the way, haha."
Midas blushes slightly, embarrassed about the fact he hadn't switched back to his old clothes yet.
"Hm? O-Oh, sorry. Hang on."
He clicks his fingers, returning to the clothes he was wearing before.
"Ah, much better."
Jones looks to where the cube guards just were and turns back to Midas as they begin putting chairs back where they were before.
"Hey Midas? Those cube guards...why were they calling you Oro?"
Midas tenses up a little, but quickly shakes it off.
"I'm not sure. Maybe it was the sceptre or outfit...or both..."
Jones puts a hand on his shoulder as Midas gazes down at his hands again. He hums, shaking his head and looking back up at the blond again.
"Nevermind, it's not important. I believe we're done here. Shall we leave?"
Midas offers his hand, Jones happily taking it.
"Now, you said you want dessert right? Made up your mind on what you want?"
"Oh! Can we go for ice cream?! Please?"
"Pfft, haha. You're such a child at times, but alright. If that's what you want."

Meanwhile...
Near the center island where the Spire once sat months before the aliens arrived, all of the purple Cubes from around the island that were activated and multiplied were now gathered around the golden cube and awakening the Queen that resided inside.
A single cube guard, the one from the restaurant attack, dashes under the levitating cube and looks up at it.
"Your graciousness! I bring news of the utmost importance! I demand permission to speak with you!"
After a few seconds of silence the guard is surrounded by a purple orb, being pulled up airborne and closer to the golden cube. They put a hand on it, trying to commune with the Queen within.
"Your majesty, I bring news."
"My dear servant, you've returned from the attack. What news do you have for me?"
The guard hesitates, knowing that she will not like this at all.
"King Oro still lives my Queen. We discovered him at the place we attacked."
Tension lingers between the two for a moment.
"WHAT?! HE'S STILL ALIVE?!"
"Y-Yes ma'am. His powers are tied to one of the humans on this island, but it's him alright."
The Cube Queen's furious yell echoes across the land, making ripples in the river down below.
"So he took refuge on this pathetic island, thinking he's hidden himself away from me for good..."
The guard is lowered back on to the ground.
"Seek him out and watch him! When the time is right, and when I say so, bring him in."
"Yes, my Queen." The guard nods, saluting her by making a cube shape with their hands before running off.
"As soon as I get out of here and see Oro's face, I'll make him pay for what he and his wife did to me, my home and HIM."

Viridescent Core

Toothpick
“Hello! My humble audience! I, the Bard of the North, am going to tell you a tale. Nothing new, nothing old. A story of a hero, some may say, others a poor boy who was hated by the world.” The storyteller paused as he waited, right timing was everything when telling a story. Pacing… Too slow and the audience became bored then left without tossing even the smallest of coins. If he spoke too fast and rushed the story. It would leave the audience confused and having no reason to be impressed. So like any good storyteller, the Bard has to do a balancing act of sorts. Not too slow, not too fast. Just perfectly in the middle. “In a shattered country in the south, a novice princeling has the ambition to mend a torn tapestry that is his birthplace. Struggling to fend off those who would usurp the throne in an unending civil war spanning centuries. A mercenary that left only death in his wake, unable to stave off the monotony and peace of life. He looks back at the path laden with bodies, wondering if it was all worth it. Wandering souls summoned by a madman, travel away from a wasteland in a foreign land, the first alone, the others as companions. A deity, ancient in her years, waiting to be freed from a duty she no longer enjoys. For all these people and their stories, none are the hero of this tale. No, the hero is not grand, not wise, not ready.. he was punished for nothing of his doing, who was an outcast that was unloved by many, including his father.” This was always the big reveal novices use to jump off into their story. He did not start here, instead, like any good fishermen, he set the bait and waited until the fish bit before pulling. As he saw the audience's eyes focus, he then started the backstory. The harness, that stopped the listeners from having metaphorical whiplash. The foreshadowing. “But that is not where the story starts. No, not even the hero's birth. Where the story begins, is the boredom of the deity, a deity many know of. She who hunts for the impossible, the guide for those who have lost the path, the Huntress of Mallon--” A small pause, a short breath. “--All old names for a single powerful being that has roamed the grounds of this continent longer than any line of kings or queens, lords or ladies. A being of worship for many an individual…” One last breath. And he began singing the first verse.
