《Saved》Chapter 27: Chased

"You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." -Winston Churchill
I watched the clock as it finally became time to leave school for the day. My mind still racing with what happened in the cafeteria. My classmates all filed out going to where they needed to be as I finished putting away my things. I say a quick goodbye to my teacher as she begins wiping down the board. I stand in the hallway waiting for Ilias to come get me so we can go wait by the car for Mateo.
Ilias eventually turns around the corner, looking like he is a whole 2 minutes from passing out on the spot. His drooping eyes lit up as he saw me waiting for him in my usual spot by the janitor's closet. I like this spot because no one really notices me when I'm standing here, that and the janitor, Mr. Kacy, is really nice and sneaks me whatever candy he has. "I'm sorry I wasn't at lunch today, I was just super tired, and the ISS teacher is far too scared to wake me up." Ilias blurted out as we made our way out of the school. "Anything interesting happen while I wasn't there?" Nothing much really other than being threatened by some girl named Hailey who's apparently obsessed with you. Maybe I can just pretend like I didn't hear his question.
"Oh, it's ok, it's not really a big deal-wait why is Mr. Steel scared of you?" I questioned. Ilias's eyes widened a little in what seems to be realization of what he said.
"Who knows, he just is." Ilias drawled, looking at the ground. Weird. "Anyways, do you know every teacher's name in this place?" Ilias asked, changing the subject. Double weird.
"I think it's mean to refer to someone as to what they teach. Since they're more than that." I answered, making Ilias mumble something about me being too nice for my own good. We continue the rest of our walk in silence.
Ilias and I stand by the car waiting for Mateo to come out of his school so we could start heading home. A gust of wind blew, and I couldn't help the shiver that went through my body at the coldness of the air. I wrapped my arms around my body trying to contain any and all body heat. You'd expect that after 2 years in a cold basement I'd would be used to the cold but that can't be more wrong. Ilias looked me over.
"Where's your sweater from this morning?"
"Mia got cold in Mr. Buckman's class so I gave it to her." I explained, "she forgot to give it back though but I'm sure I'll get it back tomorrow." I rushed out; Ilias began taking off his hoodie.
"Why are you-" Ilias put his hoodie over my head, effectively stopping my question. I look at him questioningly.
"I can deal with the cold, but you on the other hand will probably end up getting sick. And I can't have my favorite baby sister getting sick now, can I?"
"But-"
"No buts, you can let me use your shoulder as a pillow until we get back home as a thank you for giving you my hoodie." I nodded my head yes, happy to pay him back for letting me use his hoodie. I put my arms in the sleeves and the hoodie practically swallowed me whole due to my short stature. Ilias was holding back his laughter at how big the hoodie is on me. I turn away from him and let out a huff of annoyance.

I spot Mateo walking towards us with his usual smile. I gave him a wave once I knew he could see us. Mateo picked up his pace and eventually he wrapped his arms around me and Ilias pulling us both into a hug, I tensed for a moment before hugging him back. "Oh, how I missed my little baby siblings." Mateo pulled back, "Alright get in the car you two, I'm ready to get home. It's been a long day."
The three of us hopped in the car and Ilias quickly made himself comfortable on my shoulder as he closed his eyes. Mateo pulled out of our parking space onto the road. A yawn escapes my lips as I realize how tired I am. I rest my head on top of Ilias's and feel my eyes begin to close.
I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do in this situation. We've been followed by 2 black SUVs for around 10 minutes now. Dad has trained us for what to do when this happens, but I can't exactly follow protocol right now seeing since Isabella is with me and we still haven't told her about our mafia.
Protocol is to drive around to know you're being followed, once sure call for backup, and if the pursuers start trying something then shoot at them with the intent to kill. But how am I supposed to do that with Isabella in the car? Not to mention the fact that Ilias hasn't even finished his training yet.
I look at the backseats to see the twins both asleep. Ilias with his head on Isabella's shoulder and Isabella's head laying on top of Ilias's. Need picture. I shake my head to get rid of the thought. Not the time Mateo! I need to call dad to get back up here.
I notice the 2 cars begin to speed up, so I do the same. I pull up contacts on my phone trying to pay extra attention to the road at the same time. I click my father's contact, putting it on speaker. Dad, please pick up your phone.
Hello
Dad, oh thank God you answered
Mateo what's wrong? I was just about to call you, why aren't you home with the twins yet?
I look at the backseat to make sure that both of my baby siblings are still asleep. It's best to answer in Italian just to make sure.
(I need reinforcements, there's 2 black SUVs following us. Ask uncle Tommaso to track my phone to get my exact location. I don't know where we are but I do know that I took a lot of turns. Please hurry dad. I don't know how long this road is and I don't want Ilias or Isabella getting hurt.)
I hear a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the phone then my dad's voice yelling but it's muffled. So, I don't know exactly what's being said.

Do they know what's happening? I hate to ask but do you think you have enough ammo in the car to last you?
They're both asleep in the back seat. In fact, you should be jealous that you don't get to see this adorable sight. Isabella is wearing Ilias's hoodie and it's like 10 times the size of her-oh yeah by the way we should probably look into getting her a dietitian nutritionist because she's still really tiny. I mean don't get me wrong I think it's absolutely adorable how she's like a little baby compared to all of us but it can't be healthy with how small she is. Oh yeah back to their adorableness so-
Mateo, son, I'll take your word for how adorable they are but right now I need you to focus. Do you think you have enough ammo in the car to last you?
I could hear the sounds of others talking in the background but decide to ignore it. I look in the glove department to see how much ammo I have in here.
Um, dad.
I could hear the fear in my voice even though I attempted to block it out. I turned my eyes back on the road trying to focus. Trying to get a grip on myself.
Mateo what is it? What happened?
I only have 5 bullets left, if both those SUVs are filled then there's at least 10 people. I could try to aim for the tires but we both know how terrible of a shot I am and we don't need Pavel's input to know how hard it would be to aim perfectly at tires all while trying not to crash the car.
The voices in the background went silent. Yeah, I know we're in a pretty bad situation right now.
Listen Mateo I just need you to last 10 min-
My dad was cut off as the phone went flying forward from the impact of the SUV on the right slamming into us. My head hit the steering wheel, but otherwise I stayed in place. I floored the gas pedal, going as fast as this car can. I looked in the backseat to see Isabella wide awake. Her blue eyes already fixed on me. Ilias was still passed out; his head still laying on Isabella's shoulder. I swear he can sleep through anything.
"Mateo what's going on?" Isabella asked, panic seeping into her voice as she wrapped her hand around Ilias's limp one. I turned back around facing the road once again, swerving out of the way of a tree.
"Il mio piccolo sole, I promise to explain everything to you once we get back home but right now, I need you to call dad on your phone." I expressed to my baby sister; she nodded her head pulling her phone carefully out of her back pocket. (Il mio piccolo sole-my little sunshine)
It only took two rings for dad to answer. As he did, she passed her phone over to me.
Isabella sweetheart are you and your brothers safe?
Yeah, dad we're all fine. Ilias is still passed out, Isabella's a little shaken up, I think I may have a minor laceration on my forehead from hitting the steering wheel but other than that. The phone cut off because we got rammed into. Funny enough the losers haven't used a gun yet-
I heard a loud bang then the back window glass broke. I looked back to see men leaning out of the car windows with guns in hand. I just had to jinx it. More bullets came our way. I'm going to need so many hugs after this. Isabella got down on the floorboard then jerked Ilias down with her, as he started to wake up. Ilias groaned as he blinked his eyes open, "Isa why'd you wa-" Ilias started, cut off by the sound of gunfire. His eyes shot open, no evidence that he'd been sleeping just seconds before.
Mateo what happened? Are you all still fine?
We're under fire right now dad. How much longer till you get here?
2 minutes, just hang in there for 2 more minutes!
I lean over and grab the gun and the little amount of ammo that we have. "Ilias, have you trained with guns yet?" I asked swerving once again to avoid a tree. 2 more shots are fired at us. "No, not yet, Ricardo said I start that after I get more skilled at hand-to-hand combat."
"Tell Ricardo I said sorry that I ruined his training process. Here, try to hit the moving targets. Preferably the tires, and please don't get shot in the process." A large smile broke out across his face as he began loading the gun. Ilias began shooting. Isabella stayed crouched down on the floor, visibly shaking. Gunshots were the only sound heard.
"Mateo I just ran out of bullets." I look at the clock on Isabella's phone, it's been over 2 minutes where the hell are they?
Dad where in the world-
I ease on the breaks, once the car reaches a complete stop, I rest my head against the headrest looking up towards the sky. Thank you, God. Out of the side mirror I see people being brought out of the SVUs and forced into the back of our vehicles. Either to be taken to one of our warehouses to be interrogated or taken to be killed somewhere. I look in the backseat at the twins.
"Isabella, Ilias are you two, ok?" I asked, feeling the adrenaline wear off so my head began to spin.
"I think so," Isabella mumbled. Slowly coming out of her crouching position.
"Are you kidding? I'm fucking awesome, I'm so going to brag about this to Theo." Ilias jeered happily. While Isabella looked horrified by his f bomb. I get out of the car to go greet dad while he chats with one of our subordinates. I get dizzier the more I keep walking. Black dots start appearing in my vision before it all goes black.

I'll probably not be posting the next while because I'll be starting school again the day after tomorrow.
