I admitted. "I'm scared that I'm never going to be able to forgive my mother. I hate that I hate her, you know? Many people would do anything just to speak to their mothers one last time, and here I am hating her. I feel really selfish but I don't even know how, when, or if I will ever be able to forgive her. Will things ever get better?" I asked, wiping my nose with my sleeve and glancing away.
Emery was silent for a while before pulling me in for a hug. "I won't lie to you and say things get better with time," she said. "We both know it doesn't. You get better."
I nodded.
"The thing about many people doing anything to speak to their mothers one last time," she said, rubbing my back. "I'm not saying it's not true, but you're not many people. You're you. And you should do what you know how to do. You are my best friend, and you deserve the world."
She actually called me her best friend. I mean, I knew we were getting close to becoming best friends but I didn't know we were already there.
"Thanks, Em," I told her genuinely. I actually felt a lot better after sharing my problems.
"We can now get back to lunch," she said rubbing her stomach. "I'm starving."
I let out a small laugh at that. Before becoming friends with Emery and the girls, I had thought they only ate vegetables or salads, but I was completely mistaken. They could eat a full cow and ask for more. So maybe I was exaggerating a bit, but you get the hint.
"Follow me," Emery said, pulling me out of the bathroom.
"Where are we going?"
"To look for Caelum," she said.
"Why?"
"To sit with him," she responded, her grin widening,
"What about Melanie and Clara?"
She glanced at me. "They have other friends too, you know?"
Caelum was reading a book when we arrived at his table. "What does it take to get rid of the both of you?" he asked without a glance in our direction.

"I don't know," I joked. "Have you taken the situation to a Priest?"
He instantly glared at me while Emery burst out laughing. I cracked a smile at the expression on his face.
"Why did you come here?" he asked, dropping the book on his table. He was reading a chemistry textbook. Whoa.
"I just wanted to spend some quality time with my brother and my best friend," Emery replied.
"You can spend some alone time with your best friend," Caelum retorted. "I'm out of here."
He groaned, sitting back down when he saw the glare Emery sent in his direction.
"Since that's settled," Emery chirped cheerfully, turning to me. "I'm off to get lunch, do you need anything?"
"An apple."
She nodded then pointed at Caelum. "You, Be nice."
After Emery left, I let the silence fall between the two of us as I thought of what to say. It seemed like Caelum had the same thoughts because he finally broke the silence.
"I want to apologize." He grinned sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head.
"For what?"
"For walking away like that yesterday," he said.
"Just that?" I asked.
"Yeah, what else?"
"I don't know." I shrugged, leaning back against my chair. "For dipping my clothes in water, for calling me creepy and other creative names, for putting that CD in my car, for being rude—" I stopped. "Do I need to list on?"
"Yeah." He nodded. "List on."
"Uh... for ignoring me," I said. "You need more?" He nodded. "What? You expect me to keep a list of what you do in my head? I can't remember."
He shook his head. "Don't get defensive," he said. "I was expecting a hundred reasons."
"Well, sorry for not remembering all of them."
"Wait."
"What?"
"You know what?"
"What?" I asked.
He smirked. "I really am not sorry for doing any of those things you listed."
"Why am I not surprised?" I tusked. "You're Caelum Jensen, after all."
"What is that supposed to mean?"

"I don't know." I shrugged. "Why don't you have fun figuring it out?"
"I'm calling for Pizza. Bacon, right?" Caelum asked while going through his phone.
"Get pepperoni, we got bacon the other day," I said.
"I wasn't talking to you." Ouch!
Emery glared at him. "Well, get pepperoni, we got bacon the other day."
Caelum snorted. "Bacon it is."
I just wanted to reach over and smack the phone out of his hand, which was what I did. I reached over and smacked the phone out of his hand.
"What was that?" he asked, glaring at my still outstretched hand.
I tried quirking a brow, which proved to be harder than I thought, so I settled with shrugging. "Teaching you manners."
I smirked triumphantly when I saw he was struggling to find a comeback.
"Your face." That was obviously the best he could come up with.
"Your face smells like onions," I retorted, my smirk increasing.
"Just shut up, the both of you," Emery cut in. "Caelum, call the pizza place and order pepperoni pizza."
Caelum sighed and picked up his phone, dialing the pizza place obediently. What the fuckity fuck just happened?
"What the fuck just happened?" I whispered to Emery, obviously letting my thoughts known.
"Weird right?" She grinned and I nodded. "Well, Caelum had to listen to me since I'm older than him."
Emery say what?
"How old are you?" I asked. Thinking about it now, I didn't know how old she was and I never bothered to ask.
"I'm seventeen," she said. "Well, Caelum's seventeen too, but I'm older than him with two months."
"Seventeen?"
"Yeah," she said. "He's turning eighteen next year August."
Things were getting really confusing.
If Emery was older than Caelum, it meant Caelum's dad was having an affair with Linda before Caelum was born. I really needed to up my game if I needed answers.
"I'm turning seventeen," I said, just to put it out there.
"The pizza will be here in 10," Caelum mumbled, returning his attention back to his phone.
"So, Daesyn." Emery clasped her hands together and stood. "What are you doing on Halloween?"
I shrugged. "Nothing." I didn't have any plans—not like I ever had plans, but I rarely celebrated Halloweens.
She beamed. "Then it's settled."
"What's settled?" I asked cluelessly.
"Your Halloween plans," she explained.
I stared at her like she was crazy. "What plans, Em?"
"Didn't I invite you to Wyatt's Halloween party?"
"When? Who the fuck is Wyatt even?" I asked and Caelum snorted.
"Wyatt is our" —she pointed at herself and Caelum— "cousin."
"Oh." I nodded. "I didn't know."
"Dumb," Caelum coughed. I ignored him because I didn't know when learning about other people's family trees became a requirement to be smart.
"So," Emery continued. "Wyatt invited us to his Halloween party."
"Me inclusive?"
"Yes." She grinned. "You inclusive."
She plopped herself beside me on the couch and stretched her arms. I had no idea why she stood in the first place but Emery was overdramatic.
"So, what are you going as?" I asked
"I'll find something." She waved it off. "What are you guys going as?"
"Which guys?" Caelum asked her.
She rolled her eyes. "You and Daesyn, obviously."
"I'm not going with her," he said. "Talk less of wearing matching costumes."
"Then you're going with Melanie."
"What? No!" He glared at her.
"Why do you hate Melanie?" I asked.
"Do I need a reason to hate somebody?" he asked and I nodded. He didn't necessarily need a reason to hate somebody since he was Caelum, but I hoped to get some answers.
"Well, I hate her because she's dumb. She doesn't get things easily and she's too clingy. I hate it,"
"Oh," I said. Caelum was just being mean. I still thought Melanie was nice regardless.
"It's settled," Emery cried out. "You're matching for Halloween."
