Jin sat quietly, nodding occasionally while listening to Jooheon ramble on. Jooheon cut off as he took a sip of his soda.
Jin blinked. "Why did the can crusher quit his job?"
Jooheon burst out in fake laughter.
Jin raised his eyebrows, crossing his arms. "I didn't tell the punchline yet! You can't laugh until I tell the punchline!"
Jooheon sighed, rolling his eyes before propping his head up on his fists. "Fine, fine, why did the can crusher quit his job?"
"Because it was soda pressing," Jin said, leaning forward to watch Jooheon's reaction.
Jooheon just stared at him blankly.
"I think it's funny," Jin defended, crossing his arms and leaning back in his chair.
"All right, my turn," Jooheon said. "Why did Sally fall off the swing?"
Jin opened his mouth, thinking. "Um...She fell off the swing...because...she was swinking too hard?" he tried.
Jooheon shook his head. "Nah. It was because she had no arms."
Jin blinked. "That's not funny."
"That's because you haven't heard the whole joke. What do you give a girl with no hands for Christmas?"
"Um..." Jin was thoroughly confused. "Hands?"
"Gloves."
Jin frowned. "That's mean."
"No, I was just kidding."
"Good, because-"
"She hasn't opened it yet," Jooheon said, smirking.
Jin narrowed his eyes. "Your jokes aren't funny."
"That's because they aren't jokes, Jin. They're anti-jokes. And besides, it is funny if you think about it."
"But I like my jokes better!" Jin insisted. "Maybe because they don't involve people getting their hands cut off!"
Jooheon tsk'ed and shook his head. "Maybe Sally was just born that way, Jin. Why you gotta be like this?"
"Well, I like my jokes better," he repeated, raising his chin.
Jooheon sighed and rolled his eyes. "Fine, fine. Why was the baby grizzly proud of the drawing he made?"
"Why?"
"Because he drew it with his bear hands."
There was a slight pause before Jin started laughing, and the room filled with the odd sound of windshield wipers. Then it stopped just as abruptly.
"But bears have paws?" Jin asked, and Jooheon just sighed, rolling his eyes yet again.
"It's bearside the point," Jooheon said, and as though he'd hit a button, the windshield wipers started again. To turn them off, Jooheon quickly said, "Hey, remember my younger brother, the one I told you about?"
Jin's laughter trickled out as he nodded. "I think you mentioned him once."
"Well, he's in the same grade as the triplets. Maybe I can bring him over next time and they can play together."
Jin smiled, brightening up. "I think they'd like that. Especially Jimin, since he doesn't get out much. He hasn't met many kids his age."

Jooheon nodded. "All right. I'll ask him about it. He can be kind of hard to motivate, and he's really stubborn when he wants to be, but I'll do my best."
Jin grinned. "Thanks!"
"Don't thank me yet. He can be a handful."

There was a knock on the door, and Yoongi was the first one to it. He opened it and stared at the two kids on the stoop. "Sorry, we're not buying your Girl Scout cookies," he said before attempting to shut the door, but Hobi slid underneath Yoongi's arm and got a foot in the door.
"Hi!" he said, feeling a bit more energetic than usual, both because he was at home where he felt safe, because he'd recently reconciled with Wonpil, and because he was tired of being bored (as he'd been grounded as expected by a worried Namjoon).
"Hey, Hoseok," Jooheon said, ignoring Yoongi for the time being. "Can we come in?"
"Yep!" Hobi began trying to push Yoongi out of the way using his hip, but Yoongi wasn't quick to budge.
"HYUNG!" Taehyung yelled from the couch next to Jungkook, observing the scene. "YOUR FRIEND IS HERE!"
A door opened and shut quickly as Jin raced out of his room. "Jooheon! Come inside," he said with a smile, and just as Hobi was about to push Yoongi once more, Yoongi stepped back, letting the door fly open as Hobi went tumbling into the wall.
Jooheon sent them half a glance before entering before turning around to look at the boy behind him. "Come on, slowpoke."
The boy made a face at him before following, much slower and less eager than Jooheon to enter the Kim household. Hobi was already wrestling with Yoongi, leaving Jin to shut the door and lead them in.
"Who's he?" Taehyung asked, tilting his head, and Jungkook sat up to get a better look, putting his hand on Taehyung's shoulder to push himself up to see over Taehyung's head.
Jooheon turned to the boy. "Go on, introduce yourself."
The boy stuck his lips out in a pout before sighing. "I'm Lee Hyungwon." He pulled the sleeves of his turtleneck past his hands, playing with the extra fabric before looking back up at Jooheon.
"Thanks for coming," Jin said, playing the gracious host. He knew that his family could be a lot to take in, and the poor kid was probably scared and uncomfortable. "The two on the couch are Taehyung and Jungkook-" Taehyung and Jungkook waved. "-and Hobi is the one clinging onto Yoongi over by the door."
Hobi grinned, unable to wave because his arms were around Yoongi's neck as he was riding piggyback on Yoongi, who just looked cranky and didn't make any attempt to greet the newcomer.

"And there's one more," Jin began, turning and trying to locate the last member. Meanwhile, Jungkook and Taehyung went back to watching their program while Yoongi, Hobi still clinging to his back, joined the others on the couch and switched the channel to a crime show. Jooheon started talking with Jin, who got distracted and turned to Jooheon, leaving Hyungwon to wander about by himself.
He was tempted to just sit down on the ground where he was and take a nap until Jooheon took him home, as he'd been rudely awakened from the nap he'd been taking earlier when Jooheon had picked him up and put him in the car, dragging him out of his slumber and back into the world. But then he heard a sound coming from the room past the living room, and he decided to alleviate his boredom and investigate.
When he got to the kitchen, though, he was disappointed, as he saw no one. He sighed, turning and about to leave, when he heard the noise again. He walked slowly around the counter top and turned the corner of the wall to see a boy his again jumping up in vain, trying to reach the cabinet.
Hyungwon was about to leave the kitchen when the boy saw him.
"Um..." The boy hesitated. "Can you reach?" he asked, and Hyungwon gauged the distance to the cabinet before nodding, but he didn't move. "Can you get that box?" the boy asked, and Hyungwon stared at the boy, shrugging.
"I could if I wanted to," he said, tired and wanting simply to return to his nap, and the other boy frowned.
"Please?"
Hyungwon sighed before going over and grabbing the box, putting it on the counter where the other boy could reach it.
"Thank you," Jimin said, smiling shyly. "I'm Jimin. Jin-hyung said that Jooheon's little brother might be coming over today so I'm guessing you're-"
But Hyungwon was already walking away, leaving the kitchen to find a comfortable chair in the other room to curl up in and sleep.
***
Hyungwon hadn't yet fallen asleep when he felt a blanket being carefully tucked in around him, and he opened his eyes to see the boy from earlier, who nearly tripped backwards as he saw Hyungwon's eyes open.
"S-sorry," Jimin said. "I just thought you wanted a blanket."
Hyungwon just sort of shrugged, but it didn't stop him from snuggling his way in the blanket.
It's really soft, he thought before falling asleep.
***
"Aish, Wonnie! Why did you have to fall asleep!" a familiar voice scolded him, and Hyungwon frowned, turning over and opening his eyes slowly, blinking his long lashes.
"Because you dragged me here out of my nap," he muttered, glaring at his older brother. "You know I get cranky if I don't have my nap time."
"You're too old for nap time," Jooheon argued, rolling his eyes as he helped Hyungwon stand up.
"I'm not too old to be cranky," Hyungwon argued, and Jooheon sighed sharply, looking over at Jin.
"Sorry, I thought they'd get along. I guess not."
Jin smiled, but he was disappointed. He'd hoped it would work out too. Jimin needs a friend. "That's okay, Jooheon. Thanks for bringing him anyway." He hesitated before smiling at Hyungwon. "Hope you had a nice nap."
"I did," Hyungwon mumbled, uncomfortable because he didn't know Jin very much at all, aside from what Jooheon had told him.
Jin grinned. "Of course you did, Jimin has the softest blankets, and that one is his favorite one," he said, and Hyungwon looked at the blanket still sitting on the chair.
Jimin...the name sounds familiar, Hyungwon thought to himself, picturing the boy in his head. What was it that hyung said about him?
On the car ride over, Jooheon had briefly told Hyungwon something important about Jimin. A warning? An instruction? Hyungwon couldn't remember. He'd been too tired to process everything.
But his blanket was really soft.
Just then, Hyungwon saw Jimin, coming out of his bedroom and attempting to quietly pass through toward the kitchen.
"Thanks," Hyungwon said, staring at Jimin, who stopped and looked over, surprised. "For the blanket."
There was a slight pause before a wide smile took over Jimin's face, and he nodded his head once before disappearing into the kitchen.
A knock on the door brought Hyungwon's head back toward the front of the house.
"Ah, our dad's here," Jooheon said, grabbing Hyungwon's hand. "Please say he isn't wearing the blue tracksuit," he muttered before peeking out the door. "Of course he is." He turned around, waving at everyone before cupping a hand to his mouth. "Bye, Jimin!"
"Bye, Jooheon-hyung!" Jimin yelled back from the kitchen.
Hyungwon wondered what it would be like to have Jimin said goodbye to him, too.
"Bye, Hyungwon!" came the same voice.
Hyungwon blinked. Did Jimin just-
But then Jooheon was pulling him out the door, closing it quickly behind them.
"But I thought you liked this tracksuit!"
"Dad, nobody except you likes that tracksuit," Jooheon complained. "It's embarrassing!"
Hyungwon ignored them, climbing in the car and staring out the window at the house. He was maybe a little self-centered, a result of a doting father, and he knew that he was slow to warm up to people, but he felt guilty for some reason.
He wished for once that he would be a bit more outgoing, more sociable, more able to express his emotions. Maybe then he would have been nicer to Jimin.
Maybe he would have gotten to say goodbye.

Conquest of Avalon
Revenge. The Kingdom of Avalon swept across the Empire of the Fox a generation past, conquering the heartlands and leaving the broken remnants to stew in the island duchy of Guerron. This isn't a story of Good versus Evil, of kindly kings doing their best to lift all subjects, or of unvarnished heroes doing battle against evil. Instead, this story is about power: who has it, who wants it, and what people will do to obtain it. It is about the violence inherent in the imperial project and how even the most well-intentioned rulers and conquerors are, still, engaging in systemic violence against those conquered and defeated. Our three point-of-view characters are a peasant turned fire wizard, an excitable duelist with more enthusiasm than sense, and a scheming mage-priestess bent on reclaiming her family's birthright and waging war on the foreign oppressors who rule her home... no matter the cost in blood or treasure.
