《Inside Job (FNAF: SB Rewrite)》Chapter 18 - Encounter

I woke up out of breath and in a cold sweat. My eyes darted around the room, and I remembered where I was. Freddy's backroom.

I had a nightmare, I think. The memory of it had already begun to fade, but I remembered bits and pieces of it. I saw Michael cutting his stomach open, I trembled from endoskeletons towering over me, and I heard Roxy's sorrowful cries as she burned. I shook it off and hopped off the chair.

I walked over to Freddy's room and peaked in. "Freddy?" I whispered.

Freddy was standing by the arcade machine in the corner. He looked like he was playing the game on it. He looked over his shoulder and smiled.

"Gregory, look! I set up the game, do you want to try?" he said excitedly. His face dropped when he noticed the dark circles around my eyes. "You look tired," he commented.

I rubbed my eyes to try and wake myself up more. "I had a nightmare," I admitted. "Oh no, are you okay?" he asked.

"I'm fine, just tired," I said. I was going to have to get over this tiredness if I wanted to continue my investigation. "What's the game?" I asked, curious about the arcade game. I had seen it earlier and noticed it was untouched. This must be the first time Freddy's ever turned it on.

"You deliver cake to all the kids! Look!" Freddy said. I had to stand on my tippy toes to see the screen better. It was a pixelated version of Freddy, and he held a giant pink birthday cake. Around him were pixels that were meant to represent children, and after not giving them cake fast enough they'd begin to complain. This looked like a regular work day for Freddy. Why would he be so excited about it? "Why don't you try?" he said.

He moved over to let me take the controls. It was just a simple joystick to move the character around and a button to interact with things. The game itself was fairly easy, and I was about to quit when a car pulled up to the front of the restaurant. There was a kid crying outside, wanting to get in but couldn't for some reason. This was different than when Freddy played. I stopped trying to feed the kids and watched as a man walked out of the car and towards the child crying outside. "Freddy, what's this?" I asked.

He leaned in closer to the screen. "I don't know, I've never seen this before," he said. I tried to move Freddy's character out to the doorway, but it moved far too slow to make it. We could only watch helplessly as the man approached the child.

The kid turned gray, and the man went back to his car and drove off. I froze. It was pretty clear this was supposed to represent a child being murdered. The game cut to black, and eventually all that appeared on screen was a white face. It had black, hollow eyes with purple streaks running down its face. I tried clicking one of the buttons, but nothing happened.

"I think I broke it," I said. Freddy unplugged the machine, but the screen remained. Even after he put the plug back into the outlet, its face still shone. "How odd," Freddy said.

The face reminded me of something, but I couldn't quite pin it down. It looked like a mime, stuck forever smiling, its streams down its face resembling crying, similar to the kid crying in the game itself. Then I remembered; I found a plushie of this back on the first night. When I first encountered the endoskeletons, I found a present in the playroom, and inside was a soft toy that looked just like this.

"Do you recognize it anywhere?" I asked Freddy.

"It somewhat resembles an old animatronic from the 80's," he said.

"Really? Who?"

"The security puppet. But I don't know much about the old locations and attractions," he admitted.

Security puppet. Now that I thought about it, the S.T.A.F.F. bots sort of looked like the bootleg version of it. They had the same long, white face and both worked in security.

"Enough games for now. We've got some work to do," I said.

"Actually, I–"

I knew exactly what he was going to say. "Nope! No, I'm not letting you go to parts and service today!" I interrupted him. He's been gone for too long, and I don't really want to be alone, even though I know I can handle myself.

"I don't really have a choice," he said.

"Yes you do, you could just not go. I'd rather explore with you than alone," I confessed. Especially with his new upgrades, he'll be incredibly useful while searching the building.

Freddy's ear twitched while he thought. "Okay, I'll stay with you for a while. But I'll have to leave eventually, the technicians also need to do their job," he stated.

"Perfect. I thought we could take a look through Gator Golf first," I said. It was Monty's area, like how Roxy had her raceway. Monty's Gator Golf has been a part of the pizzaplex since the beginning, while Roxy's Raceway is still in development.

Freddy stared at me firmly. "This isn't because you want to talk to Monty, is it?" he said, his tone condescending.

"What? No, I just haven't gotten a chance to look around it yet," I said. I was totally lying, but talking to Monty wasn't on the top of my priority list. First, find secrets; second, fix Chica and Roxy; third, talk to Monty.

"If you want to get into Gator Golf, you're going to need another party pass, like the one you used to get into Fazer Blast," Freddy explained.

"But there was only one in Chica's room. Where am I supposed to find another?" I asked.

"Hm... There could be one at one of the convenience counters. We could try the one down the hallway."

Down the end of Rockstar Row is a gift shop full of Fazbear merchandise and other purchasable goods. We walked in and ransacked the shelves, eventually finding a drawer full of the party passes. This must be where they hand them out to guests. I took a couple, just in case I'd need a few extras.

"Gator Golf is on the main floor in the atrium, but we'll have to be careful. Monty is most likely going to be inside," Freddy said.

The way to Gator Golf was an elevator ride, similar to the arcade and dance floor area. I hopped on and waited for Freddy to join me, but he hesitated.

"C'mon Freddy, let's go," I said. He shook his head.

"I, uhm... I can't," he muttered.

He can't be planning to go to parts and service already! We barely even started. "Freddy, seriously? I get your repairs are important but I can't do this alone," I said.

"It's not the repairs," he said, "I just can't go into Gator Golf." He awkwardly looked away, avoiding the Monty-themed elevator.

"Why not?" I asked. What could possibly be the reason he can't come along?

"Well," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. He took a deep breath and said, "It's where Bonnie died."

My eyes widened in surprise. Bonnie died here? Freddy must be feeling a mixture of emotions right now. I felt guilty; I'm tearing apart his friends and taking him to his friend's death site?

"I-I'm sorry... I can go alone," I said. I thought about the dance floor incident, with the giant DJ that chased me around the arcade. I really didn't want to experience something like that again.

"Don't worry, you won't be alone. I'll talk to you through the Faz watch," he said. Right, the Faz watch! As long as Freddy is powered on, I can communicate with him whenever I want to. I gave him a firm nod.

He knelt down and gave me a hug, a bit tighter than the last one, before we were separated when he left me with Chica. I was upset then, because he was leaving me, and I still feel upset now, but I know now more than ever that he'll always be here for me to rely on, even if he can't be on sight 24/7. I gave him a hug back.

He wished me luck and I pressed the elevator button. After a ride up, the doors opened on the other side.

The entrance to Gator Golf was dark, almost as if the ceiling lights were dying. The walls were lined with bright green lights, and there were tons of illustrations of Monty playing golf. The counter and gift shop was littered in Monty centric souvenirs.

"Huh... he's the only one to have a gift shop dedicated to himself," I noted. I don't remember a gift shop in Roxy's Raceway, but then again it isn't finished, and I haven't seen a gift shop full of Freddy-only merchandise yet either.

Walking past the counter and into Gator Golf itself, I saw the massive golf course. It felt like walking through a swamp with neon green lights. There were a bunch of plastic plants and reservoirs with giant Monty heads that jumped out and roared. If I wasn't here looking for information, this looked like it'd be really fun.

"Freddy, I'm inside," I said. I was going to keep him updated throughout my whole trip away from him.

"Great. Check the security office in the back, you might find something there," he said. I walked through the course, slowly taking in the entirety of the room. I heard a waterfall but I couldn't see it anywhere. I looked above me; the ceiling had long pathways that interconnected with each other with different decorations hanging from them.

"Hey Freddy," I asked, "Is there any way to get to the top of Gator Golf? You know, with the walkways above?"

"That's a maintenance panel. I'm not sure how to access it in Gator Golf, but I do know there's a vent in Mazercise that leads to it," he said. How oddly specific. I could probably find the regular entrance while I'm here.

Eventually I came across a long hallway. It felt incredibly bare compared to the overly decorated Gator Golf I had just walked through. To the right was a door to a small room that looked identical to the security office I use to watch Michael's VHS tapes. There were several things inside that grabbed my attention immediately.

First, some kind of camera. I remembered I told Roxy we should take a picture together. I wished she was here now, we could use this camera for that photo. I shook it off and picked it up. It was lighter than I expected. "I think I found a camera," I said into my watch. "That must be a Faz Cam. It's bright lights can cause us to malfunction, so they're often confiscated in Gator Golf," Freddy said. I remembered the Fazer Blaster I got when I was playing the game with Chica. She had mentioned avoiding shooting in the eyes, and when I did she was stunned for a while. Maybe this camera would do the same thing.

A Mazercise Pass sat on the security office desk. I took it, deciding that Mazercise would be the next location I'd visit. "I found a Mazercise pass too," I told Freddy. "That's great! Now we can get into Mazercise," he said through the watch.

Last but not least, a VHS tape sat beneath the desk, wedged between the wall and the desk. I hesitated at first; the last tape wasn't the most comforting. Still, they were my closest thing to finding actual answers while I'm in this place. I sucked it up and took it as well. "And a cassette tape," I added for Freddy. "We should watch it together. I've missed quite a lot of those tapes," he said.

"I think I've got everything. I'll be back soon," I said. Freddy gave me a "see you soon," and I exited the security office. My hands were now full with the Faz Cam and cassette tape. I should probably watch the VHS tape first so that I don't have to carry it around forever.

I walked through the hallway and pushed open the door with the side of my arm. When the door opened, I saw the one and only Montgomery Gator standing there expectantly. I stepped back in surprise, but I grinned when I realized it was just him.

"Monty! Hi!" I said. He stood menacingly with his arms crossed. "That's mine," he said. His voice was deep, much deeper than when I heard it when I was with Freddy.

"What is?"

He pointed towards the VHS tape. "Oh, that," I said, "I'm just borrowing it. I think it could be a big clue to figuring out what's going on around here."

"You mean like how you borrowed Chica's voice box? And Roxy's eyes?" he said. He used his body to block the doorway. He looked at his claws, and I could see them reflect the light from the ceiling.

I chuckled nervously, my hopes of befriending Monty quickly dissipated. It was easy to feel the intent behind Monty's actions. "I-I think there's been a bit of a misunderstanding," I said, taking a step backward. Monty was going to have me cornered if I didn't come up with a plan soon.

He took a step forward to maintain the distance from me. "I don't care that you're a kid. You'll regret what you did," he threatened. His arm swung towards me, and I quickly ducked below and between his legs. I ran as fast as I could, passing by all the gator decorations.

When I looked back to see how he was catching up to me, I noticed something. He was unable to run far distances. Instead, he had to rely on lunging either high up in the air or far enough forwards. I saw him jump into the air and land on one of the ceiling decorations, reminding me of when Sun jumped up high to retrieve items from the overhang. He spotted me from above and dived down. I quickened my pace for a brief second as it was all I could manage at that moment, and I barely escaped from his landing position.

I ran up to the elevator, and just like in the dance floor, Monty wasn't able to force his hand through before the doors closed. I felt the ground shake beneath me, a mixture of the floor moving as the elevator began and Monty venting in frustration. I had to get to Freddy as soon as possible.

When the door opened, Freddy was waiting outside, just like how Roxy had done. He must've been able to see me through the walls once I got close enough. "We have to go, Monty saw me!" I said. Freddy understood immediately and opened his chest cavity.

I groaned. It's been a while since I've been inside, but he was right to think this was the safest place for me. I put in all my belongings and hopped inside. Freddy began speed walking, and I heard Monty from afar yell in irritation.

After a while, Freddy slowed his walking. "Can we go to the security office first? I wanna see this tape," I said to him.

"Okay," Freddy said. His hatch opened and I jumped out, taking out the Faz Cam and cassette tape as well.

"Did you talk to Monty at all?" Freddy asked.

"Well, sorta, kinda. I tried, but was too angry," I said. I barely even had a chance to talk to him. I met Roxy when she was angry too, but she let me talk it through. He didn't seem interested in my side of the story.

Freddy sighed. "I told you Monty can be dangerous."

I nodded, "Yeah, I get what you mean."

Freddy offered me a hand. "Let's go see that tape," he said.
