《Since You Been Gone》Chapter 35

"Are you sure that this is, like, safe?" I ask — well, more like yell over the sound of the loud music. He nods and pulls off one of his tennis shoes.

"Oh, yeah! I used to go all the time with the football team!" he yells back. I nod and pull off my Sperries. We take our shoes over to the counter where they switch them out for roller skates.

"Well I bet you all knew how to skate!" I respond. He sits down on the ground and starts to put on the roller skates. I sit down next to him and do the same.

"Actually, I didn't the first time we went. I had to join this class of three year olds learning to skate while the rest of the team skated laps around us. I fell so many times they called me Fally Four for the rest of the season," he says. I giggle and pull on my skates.

"Would it be okay if I started calling you that?" I ask. He shakes his head and stands up.

"Nope because I'm sure after this you'll be Tumbling Tris," he replies. I laugh and attempt at standing up only to fall right back down because of the wheels sliding out from under me. "Do you want help. . . Tumbling Tris?" he asks. I stick out my tongue at him but still hold my arms out.

"It would be greatly appreciated," I tell him. He grabs my hands and lifts me up. "Okay, so how do I move?" I ask. He chuckles and looks down at our feet.

"Just push off like this," he says. He pushes his feet back and begins to move forward. I try to mimic his movements and fall forward. He reaches out and catches me. "I gotcha" he says. I smile up at him as we separate, which is not easy. Once I'm finally off of him, he grabs my hand. "Just hold on to me," he says.

"Easier said than done," I mumble. He smiles at me.

"You don't hate me that much," he says as we move onto the wood floor containing a tired mom with about five kids and a middle aged couple wearing bedazzled outfits right of the 1970's.

"It surprised me to," I say. He laughs and, surprisingly, a smile finds its way to my face.

"We should bring Lucas to come next time," he says after a few seconds of silence. I look up at him with arched eyebrows.

"Only if you want to pay for the hospital bills for not one, but three broken necks," I tell him. He smiles and looks down at me.

"Three broken necks?" he asks. I nod.

"Three because Lucas and I would be pulling each other down and then you'd attempt some epic, super hero style save and we'd all get hurt," I explain. He nods.

"It would be three, then. I guess," he replies. I smile at him. The conversation between us fickles out and I focus on the movements of my feet. I begin to think about how complicated this is. This is the fourth time just the two of us have gone out since he told me about having to leave. None of the other outings required this much patience. Eventually, he lets go of my hand and I only occasionally fall.

"Alright, it's time for the infamous couples date. All you single people get off the floor!" rings the overly energetic DJ. I begin moving towards the side to get off the wooden floor but Tobias grabs my hand. I look up at him and he smiles at me.

"Come on, lets do the couples skate," he says as the mom and her kids pass us. I shake my head.

"No. Let's go get something to eat instead," he says. He shakes his head and pulls me towards the inside of the oval floor.

"No. We're doing the couples skate," he says. He takes my hand and we begin skating around in circles.

"Four, we're not even a couple," I tell him. He rolls his eyes.

"That doesn't matter. We not be dating but we are friends," he says. I sigh.

"Fine, but if some kind of magic kiss cam thing appears I'm slapping you and we're leaving," I warn. He rolls his eyes and sighs.

"Yes, I'm sure they have a kiss cam at this dead roller rink," he states. I laugh and we move forward in silence. I do fine and I almost say something out loud but I know this will lead to me jinxing myself so I stay silent.

Unfortunately, though, it counts when you say it in your head because I fall forwards. Tobias reaches out and catches me. I look up at him and how close our faces are. His breath tickles my nose. I almost lean closer and I can see the wheels in his mind spinning, telling him to do it. His eyes sparkle with admiration. His face moves closer and I almost let him do it.

Then, the lights turn back on and we jump apart. I run a hand through my hair and take a deep breath. "Thanks for catching me," I say. He nods and looks over at the snack bar.

"Do you wanna get something?" he asks. I nod and smile at him and we move towards the edge of the floor, completely ignoring what almost just happened.
