《Since You Been Gone》Chapter 33

I hear a knock on the door and then Lucas yells, "I got it mommy!" I begin to run after him to scold him for opening the doors for strangers but then he says, "Hi daddy! Why are you here?" I calm down and release a sigh of relief even though Lucas will still need to be told that it was wrong.

"Lucas! I thought I told you not to open the door unless I tell you you can," I say as I round the corner. Tobias looks up at me and nods, his parental views obviously kicking in.

"Yeah, Lucas. You need to make sure it was okay with your mom before you let someone into your house," Tobias tells Lucas. Lucas frowns at him. His eyes looks glassy like he is about to cry because he was fussed at by his father.

"But it was only you," Lucas mumbles. Tobias nods and gets down so they are at eye level.

"I know, but if it wasn't me it could have turned bad. You need to make sure it is okay with your mom before you let someone in the house," Tobias says in a soft voice. Lucas nods. "Now, why don't you go to your room and play with your toys," Tobias offers. Lucas nods and runs into the house.

"Well, I guess he has a favorite parent. He would have put up an argument with me that would end up in resulting in me giving him candy in order to calm him down or something," I say. Tobias chuckles. I turn around and walk back into the kitchen where I was attempting to make dinner.

"Well, what can I say? I have that effect on people," Tobias says. I roll my eyes and continue cutting tomatoes to go in the meat sauce for our spaghetti.

"Ah, yes, I believe I've heard of that. Isn't it called the Fourfection which is where you become hypnotized and can't do anything on your own because you are so in love with Four that you can't do anything without him?" I ask. Tobias chuckles and nods.

"I believe that's the one," he says. I smile at him and add the tomatoes to the meat simmering on the stove.

"Not to be rude or anything, but can I ask why you came to my house unannounced?" I ask. He nods and leans back against the counters.

"I suppose it wouldn't hurt. . . Do you want some help with that?" he asks. I nod but don't allow him to see the relief of having help in the kitchen.

"Okay, well, then why are you here? Is it so you can work for a meal because if you are then I'm afraid this isn't McDonalds," I say. He chuckles and shakes his head before pulling out a box of spaghetti noodles from the pantry.

"No, but if that is you offering to feed me I accept," he says. I laugh and smile at him. "I am actually here because I got an interesting phone call just a little while ago and I figured you would want to hear about it," he says. I nod.

"Well, what was it?" I ask. He looks at me as begins running water for the spaghetti noodles to boil in.

"Um, it was the coach from Northern Illinois. He wants a couple different things from me. . . First of all, he wants to see more of Lucas in the press and thinks it would be a good idea if we held a press conference for the three of us," he says. I almost drop the pot I just pulled out of the cabinet for the noodles.

"No. That's not happening," I say as I hand him the pot. He nods and takes the pot. He puts it under the faucet and lets the water begin to fill it up.

"That is exactly what I told him. . . He also wants to see more of the two of us. He thinks it would be good publicity if everyone knew we were friends and stuff," he says. I look at him and raise my eyebrows.

"How does he expect us to do that? Does he expect us to tell the press every time we go somewhere so they can get a few pictures of us trying to ignore them or what?" I ask. He shrugs and cuts off the water. He puts the noodles in the pot and turns on another burner on the stove.

"He says it wouldn't hurt to let him know so he can let the press know but he also said we should post stuff together on social media," he says. I raise my eyebrows again.

"Selfies, yay!" I mumble. He chuckles and nods.

"That's definitely a way for us to get out there. But I just need to know. . . How good is your duck face? I cannot seen in a picture with someone doing a terrible duck face," he says. I laugh.

"I am an expert when it comes to the duck face," I say. He laughs and shakes his head.

"Um, in addition to the whole selfie thing, he wants me to be back to Northern Illinois in three weeks. He thinks I need to come back and train with the team," he says. I stop what I'm doing and stare at him.

"Are you serious?" I whisper. He nods and sighs.

"Yeah. He said I would get cut from the team if I didn't come back. . . I just don't know how I'm gonna leave Lucas," he says. I nod, not really sure how to respond.

"We'll figure something out," I assure him with a smile. He gives me one back but it still doesn't seem that genuine.
