《Since You Been Gone》Chapter 10

Tris P.O.V.
"Mrs. Prior, it is an honor to have you here considering at our daycare services for your son," Mrs. Patterson says as she sits down at her desk. Mrs. Patterson is the owner of the most prestigious daycare in Chicago, or at least that is what everyone says. I'm not completely sure how one daycare is more more special than the others. Maybe when the children pick their noses they put it in a tissue instead of eating it?
"Well, I've been told that this is one of the best daycares in Chicago. I wanted Lucas to be in the best hands the city has to offer," I say with a polite smile. Mrs. Patterson's short brown hair sways over her shoulder as she turns to look out the one way window where she can watch the playroom area. Lucas is helping another little boy put together a train track set like one he has at home.
"Well, I'm certainly glad you've considered us. I loved your book, by the way. A famous author will definitely bring us more success," she says. I smile and nod like I understand and receive comments like this all the time although I really do. I had a doctor's appointment once and the doctor asked me if I would take a picture with his nurses to share on his website. People get way too excited to meet me, though. I'm just a girl who put her words down on a piece of paper.
"So, um, can we begin the interview?" I ask. She arches her eyebrows up a little and then her mouth forms a little circle like she is just now realizing something. Her brown eyes search over the neatly organized desk. She picks up a folder from a stack of identical one. The all have several pieces of pieces of paper inside. On the front of the top folder there is purple sticky note that reads New Student Files in a neat handwriting.

"Oh, yes. I was so caught up with you being, well, you I almost forgot your real purpose for you being here," she says. I smile politely and stay silent. She opens the folder and takes out a form. "So, when will Mr. Prior be arriving?" she asks. I pinch the insides of my hand. She must not be someone who watches the interviews or reads the author's short biography in the back of the book. If she did, she would know that there is no Mr. Prior.
"Um, I had kind of figured you would have known that there is no Mr. Prior. I'm not married," I say. She nods and scribbles something down on a yellow sticky note and puts it on the inside part of the folder. "Um, is there something wrong with that?" I ask. She shakes her head and gives me an smile but it seems more forced than genuine.
"Will it be a problem to get Lucas's father here?" she ask. I bite my bottom lip and stare at the little Newton's cradle on her desk. It reminds me of a larger version using bowling balls on a television show I used to watch when I was younger. Sometimes Lucas watches it. It takes all my might not to laugh.
"Um, probably. Does he need to be here? He wasn't able to make it today," I say. She nods and folds her hands in front of her on the desk.
"Not at all. I will just need you to get him to sign a few forms. We just need the parent who he lives with here for the first impressions, though," she says. I nod as she flips through her stacks of paper.
"This won't be a problem, though, right? Lucas's father left us to go to college while I was pregnant. I can get him to sign the papers but I don't know if he will be able to come here for any parent meetings or anything," I say. She nods and scribbles down something else down on a yellow sticky note, placing it below the other one inside the folder.

"Of course not. This is about Lucas, not what happens with the parents," she says. She has a smile on her face that is so obviously forced that it looks like it may hurt her. I look at the form where it has the father information.
"I don't want Lucas's father to be released to the public. We have managed to keep it a secret for all this time, I would like to keep it that way," I say. She nods and points to something on the form. It has spots for the grandparent information. I pinch the palm of my hands again. I'm not really sure how to say his grandparents on his mom side kicked her mother add and his dad's mom left him with his dad who beat his son to death. "Um, do you have to have grandparent information?" I ask. She looks down at the paper.
"Oh, um, is that going to be a problem? We can add a note or something if they're deceased," she says. I nod and pinch the skin of my palms even tighter, if that is even humanly possible. I feel something on my left hand. I look down to see a thick, red liquid coming from the spot I was pinching.
"Um, they aren't deceased. His father and I both have a. . . complicated history with our parents. There is some unsolved problems with all of them," I say. She nods and writes another sticky note message. This possibly could be the worst daycare interview ever.
"Well, um. Thank you for informing me about all of that. Should we begin observing Lucas now?' she asks. I smile and nod. She picks up some glasses from the desk and pushes them up her nose. She picks through a pile of papers in one of those trays with multiple layers. She pulls out a form that has already been filled out. It already has my hand writing on it in my sloppy cursive stating all of Lucas's skills.
"So, he already knows the alphabet, can count, and is starting out reading?" she asks. I nod and mumble a yes. She nods and looks through the information. "Well, I can look through this later. How about we observe him for a little while?" she asks. I nod and she leads me over to where three chairs are facing the one way window. One for Mrs. Patterson and one for me. The empty one is meant for the other parent that should be here.
So, I'm really sorry if this seems really boring. It's kind of a filler chapter. I plan on something important happening soon, though! And don't start jumping around. It isn't a Fourtris reunion. Well, you can jump around but I'm just warning you it isn't that. :) So, yeah... Comments and votes maybe?
