《Empresses of Pangaea: The Clash of Queens [ BOOK 1 ]》17

When Rehema had left after having lunch with him that afternoon, Sang-chul couldn't help but feel his stomach do flips. It was his first official sitting down with the empress since she had got here. He mostly felt relieved since now he can officially say he was not forgotten.
Before she left, she kissed him on the cheek and held his hand promising she will be back soon. Sang-chul couldn't help but smile like a little boy at school. He laid on his bed staring at the bed curtain hanging in front of him.
Addo and Kukua were cleaning up the table after he had lunch with the empress. Addo couldn't help but smile at his master who was in a much better mood just from having lunch than he had been for weeks. It was nice seeing that he was adjusting to his lifestyle in his house more, and in the African lands more.
"Is that the face of a man in love," Addo asked Sang-chul after he finished clearing up the table, and entered the bedroom area of House Pearbow
Sang-chul couldn't help but blush. "Addo!" He yelled embarrassed and sat up from his bed.
Addo chuckled, "No need to be shy your majesty, I'm on your side to win her majesty's favoritism."
Sang-chul smiled and played with his hands, "Yes. I guess I am falling in love."
"Well, she is a beauty, your lucky to be one of her husbands," Addo went over to brooming Sang-chul bedroom. "You will definitely check on to be one of her favorites, and she will shower you with gifts, and maybe one day even a child." Addo winked.
Sang-chul grinned harder, "Are you ever thinking of getting married Addo?"
Addo paused, "I don't know. I'm still quite young but maybe down the line yes."
"Have you ever been in love?" Sang-chul asked.
Addo smiled, "Yes. It gets to the best of us and can sometimes hurt like hell."
Sang-chul was quiet for a moment. He stared out in space before talking again. "Addo if you ever like her majesty, I give you permission to confess your feelings to her. I'm not like one of those concubines who even gets jealous of their own servants."
Addo's eyes widened in horror, and he bent down in one knee quickly, "Sir I would never steal favoritism from you. I dare never to go behind your back and –"
Sang-chul chuckled, "Nonsense. Us sharing the same love doesn't mean you have gone behind my back, for god's sake I'm one of a dozen husbands."
Addo was shocked by his master's words, but he nodded, slowly standing up, "I don't deserve such kindness and compassion."
Sang-chul took Addo's hand softly and looked in his eyes, "I have a family here now, and I will do anything to protect us and make this a happy house to live and work in."
Addo nodded and place his other hand gently on top of Sang-chul's. For the first time, he was serving someone who appreciated him and saw him for who he was. There was no way he going to let any scheming concubine not even Omari, hurt this boy.
Omari felt irritated. The past seven days his instincts have been acting up. Waiting and waiting desperately at this point for a visit from Rehema. He had his one night with Rehema that night when she came so late for dinner. But he hadn't heard back since, and it has been eating him up inside. He just desperately wanted to know if there was any way possible, she got pregnant. It was about time some other man in the harem would have become a father other than Chike.

Omari sat on a red cushion sofa in his sitting area, at his house. The house was indeed fancy at every level and a special treat. But he was Imperial noble consort after all and many of the past Imperial noble consorts were given this house.
"Did the empress have lunch yet?" Omari asked annoyed with his pointer finger resting on his temple. He was supposed to spend his afternoon reading but instead, he was distracted by random thoughts in his head.
"Yes," Tano replied. His face was still swollen after Omari had almost gone wild on him the other week when the empress came late for dinner with Omari.
"With whom?" He said sounding even tenser.
"One of the new concubines, this was her first visit with him. The foreigner from the East Asian Lands."
Omari was quiet for a minute, he stared blankly out in the air.
"Your highness don't be down. She has been getting to know all the new men in the harem this week."
"Call the imperial doctor, I want my test checked," He said ignoring Tano's comment.
Tano nodded bending his knees in a bow and left the room to get a doctor to test his master's testosterone level. The concubines in the harem, especially ones that wanted to be fathers one day and share a child with the empress usually checked their testosterone levels weekly. A higher testosterone level might a higher chance of getting the empress pregnant, a lowers testosterone level, meant then a lower chance of getting the empress pregnant.
Tano walked to the harem doctor's office, which was a small brick-shaped house building. When he entered, he saw an older man sitting at a desk reading and writing on a stack of papers. The man looked up and peered through his glasses at who had just walked in.
"May I help you?" He asked.
"His highness, Omari Dalli needs an imperial doctor to check his testosterone level this afternoon," he simply stated.
The men nodded and stood up, he went into the back room and called out a name. In few seconds he came back, and a slightly younger man dressed in traditional royal blue kanzu came out. He held a leather-style brown bag.
"Where is your master?" He simply asked.
Tano exited the Harem's doctor's office and the doctor followed behind him. They finally arrived at the big gates of House Red End and entered. The doctor saw a grand display of the front lawn of perfectly lined up and trimmed flowers and golden statues. Doctor Swail couldn't help but be impressed. Was this what the grand life of being a concubine about? Sleep with the beautiful empress and in return, she spoils you with riches and servants. Sounded way too easy for him.
When they entered the house Swail followed Tano to a sitting room area. A man a few years younger than him was sitting on a luxury velvet couch with an annoyance painted on his face. He was wearing a white and gold king-styled Ababa, and white slip-on shoes, with three golden nose piercings on his nose.
"His highness just wants his testosterone level checked for today," Tano announced when he entered the living room with the imperial doctor behind him.
The doctor nodded and placed his leather bag down. He started to gather things and supplies out of it. Tano saw him take out the most important supply when it came to checking a concubine's testosterone level. The quartz needle. The needle was slim and pointy at the top, and rounder and slightly oval-shaped for its body. It was a needle made of liquid crystals. Pulling out a brand-new quartz needle, the needle was transparent and glass-like. Once the needle tip pierced a man's skin and absorbed blood, it changed color. First being red since the blood is red, but then you wait. If in a few seconds the needle body turned green it meant a healthy level of testosterone for whomever the male was, if it turned a yellow it meant slightly low, if it turned into a deep red it might low testosterone level, and if it turned into orange it meant the testosterone level was too high.

Swail pulled out a brand-new quartz needle and cleaned it off with a napkin first. He then took a small cotton fabric to bring to Omari and stood in front of him.
"Just your finger, your highness,"
Omari extended out his hand and stuck out his pointer finger. The doctor brought the needle to prick Omari's finger quickly and swiftly.
"Any synonyms of low testosterone level?" Swail asked as he was pinning the needle tip on the skin of Omari's finger.
The room was dead quiet for a second, everyone too scared to answer the question. Omari's nostrils were flaring with rage. Swail was confused awaiting a response. "I said-"
"We know what you asked," Omari interrupted irritated.
"Just mood swings," Tano answered. 'Boy, I can't wait to get slapped later on for this.' "His highness has been having quick mood swings from time to time."
Swail nodded, "I can check that out later and maybe prescribed something for that."
'PLEASE,' Tano begged inside.
Drips of blood entered the needle, and Swail took the needle away from Omari's finger satisfied with the drops that absorbed in the needle. He quickly put the small patch of cotton fabric over Omari's finger for healing and placed the quartz needle on the table waiting for the color to change.
Everyone had their eyes on that damn needle to see what color it would change. But it didn't change color. A few seconds later no change. A few more seconds nothing. Then suddenly the red got deeper. No longer the soft blood red but a rosewood dark red.
Omari's face twisted with rage, and he picked up the quartz needle and smashed it on the group. The tiny glass pieces spilled on the ground, along with the small amount of blood that was inside. Everyone including the doctor fell to their knees and stared at the ground.
"How is this possible?" Omari's voice was shaking. "I have been doing everything right, all your medications, exercise, eating well...I went from yellow last week to now deep red..."
"Your majesty please I'm sure there is an explanation for this," Swail said shaking as he was staring at the floor.
"Someone here is disowning me, somewhere here could be putting iron in my food..." Omari looked around the room full of terrified servants, all shaking on their knees staring that the ground. Omari felt like killing every person in that room all at once.
"It is either maybe a medical mistake...or a concubine jealous of you. Your highness everyone in the harem is racing to become the father of her majesty's first daughter. They will do the ugliest thing to have no one in their way," Tano said trying his best to get Omari to calm down and think rationally.
Omari snapped his eyes at Tano. He stared at him; the whole room waved with silence.
'Shit. I over spoke,' Tano thought. 'Shit! Shit! Shit!' He could feel Omari's eye's burning on the back of his head as he kneeled in front of him.
"Your right..." Omari said.
Tano slightly relaxed, and his shoulders calmed down a bit.
"I keep forgetting the harem and its messy state at the moment."
Omari turned to the doctor, "I'm giving you one much chance. I want a new prescription by tomorrow to get my testosterone to green by next month. If your prescription fails to work and even gives me a yellow. I will send you to the department of punishment and stripe you from your service as an imperial doctor."
Swail looked at Omari in shock, "With all due respect your highness, you can punish me but not fire me. Only the empress, emperor dowager, and two strongest concubines' in her harem have that power."
Omari smirked and bent his face closer to the Swail's face, "You're not only looking at the imperial noble concert. You're looking at a Dalli, the brother of general Adanna Dalli and if you ever question my status again, doctor you will be leaving my house with having to repair your own bones."
Swail shuddered and could not believe the coldness from this concubine. Empress Rehema was a kind woman how on earth could she have not only fallen in love with this man but give him such an important title.
"Am I clear doctor?" Omari gritted.
Swail nodded out of loss, "Yes, your highness. I will get to your prescription right away."
Omari smiled, "Good, you're dismissed. I will send a servant to the harems doctor's office for my prescription tomorrow."
Swail stood up straight and bowed giving an official dismissal. When the doctor left Tano felt a heat rise in his chest. He couldn't bear to work at the moment. He only felt sick and over-stressed.
"I need a spy to keep an eye on Chike, if anyone that wants her first daughter, it's him. Find a servant this week on his team that could work for us," Omari continued turning to Tano and two other male servants that were kneeling at him.
"Yes, your highness," Tano obeyed. Everyone then stood up and bowed one more time before getting back to their normal duties. Tano felt a shiver up his spine. He could tell by the way that Omari was sitting that trouble was brewing.

Nero Zero
Monsters plagued the lands for too long. No matter if one had fangs, beak, teeth, skin, fur, or feather, or was tall, stout, or diminutive, the people suffered. Until the Gadgeteers came with a device that could allow people to fight back. Powered by one's own magical power, feeding off of monster Essence, the Arbitrium bracer turned the tables. It also changed society. Strength of one's level cap was all that mattered. The strongest were Kings and Emperors. The weak or those too poor to afford the marvelous device, destitute. And so it has been for millennia. All that mattered was one's level cap. High, low, a fate decided the moment the strange contraption came alive. Too high and you were a threat to those interested in keeping the status quo, a weed to be nipped before it could grow and take root. Too low and you were nobody, fated to be a bit more than a simple farmer. What if someone, somewhere, came up with a zero for their level cap? Unable to use Essence, unable to level up. On all of recorded history, it never happened. Until it did. In a small village of fur-less and tail-less ape-beastkin, a boy found out he was uniquely handicapped. Nero's level cap was Zero. But he'd never let that stop him from reaching his goals. ------------------------------------------------ All stories have already been told. We merely reuse elements from them. From Joseph Campbell's Monomith to Stephen King's advice, and that encyclopedia of tropes you've visited, fiction has been dissected and reassembled countless times. One will surely find elements inspired on other works here. Just like cooking from basic ingredients, the recipe and presentation is what really matter. This is a fantasy adventure, of someone that goes from a zero to a slightly bigger zero. It will have romance but no harem. Cruelty but with hope dimly shining ahead. Lightweight where it can be, heavy where it must. Thanks for reading. Cover Credits (The cover is CC-BY-NC-SA): Steampunk Spider Bracer, by Daniel Proulx.
