Naala sped down the road towards the Police Department. Gray had offered to drive her but she couldn't think straight and she also didn't want to cause any unnecessary drama. All she could think of was her daughter.
Her mind was running mad. She didn't know if Sinai was hurt, lost or something had happened to her and Dave.
Naala pulled up at the 17th Precinct and hopped out of the car, pulling down her dress. She ran as first as the baby could allow her and straight to the front desk.
"I'm looking for my daughter?" Naala said out of breath to the officer at the desk, she ignored the sharp pain that shot through her stomach.
"Who?" He asked smacking his gun,
"My daughter! I know she's here because this says she is," Naala said holding up her phone to show Sinai's location.
"Look around lady do you see any kids?" The officer spoke in a bored tone,
Naala groaned and leaned forward, "Sir I really don't want to get out of character here, tell me where my daughter is!" She said loudly,
"Naala?" She heard from behind her. Spinning around there stood Mama Sonia holding what looked like Sinai's cross body bag.
"Mama where is she?" Naala said rushing over to her,
"Baby you need to calm down-" Sonia started, before Naala cut her off,
"I'll be calm when I find my baby!" She snapped clutching her purse, "Where is she?" She repeated,
"There's been an incident," Sonia spoke, Naala felt her heartbeat racing,
"An incident," She repeated, she began stuttering, "W-where - W-who?"
"Come on let's sit down," Sonia said reaching for Naala who stepped back straight away,
"Mama please tell me what is going on before I scream," Naala pleaded tears welling up in her eyes,
"It seems that my son was stopped by the police today," Sonia started her voice low and soft, "They won't tell me everything but they mentioned something about an unregistered firearm. I'm here to pay his bond but Sinai is through there with CPS." She said pointing towards a room at the back of the station.
A wave of relief washed over Naala as she realised Sinai was okay but then another wave of anger came right after,
"He had a gun in the car?" Naala asked, "With our child?"
Sonia sighed, "I don't know what is wrong with my son,"
"I don't even want to get into that with you mama, can I go back there?" Naala asked. She didn't have the strength to think about Dave right now, she was very uncomfortable with her daughter being back there with CPS.
Before Sonia could answer, the door opened and they were leading Dave out to the front desk. Naala scoffed as she looked at him,
"You're pathetic," She said to him as soon as he was standing by her,
"Naala I'm sorry-" Dave spoke sincerely,
"Our daughter is probably in there traumatised but you're sorry so all is well in the fucking world!" Naala shouted,
"Stop getting loud with me," Dave replied, Naala chuckled humourlessly and cocked her hand back to punch him but was stopped by Sonia.
"Naala stop! Y'all don't need to be doing all of that in here," She said quietly,
"Mama let go of her, if she touches me, I'ma knock her out," Dave grumbled,
"I would love to see you try," Naala taunted, shifting her weight onto her other foot.

"Boy shut up," Sonia said smacking the back of his head, "You're not about to hit on a woman whilst I'm standing here,"
"Amir I mean it when I say, this is your last time seeing Sinai unsupervised," Naala muttered shaking her head, "That's a fucking promise,"
"You can discuss this later," Sonia pleaded as she saw Dave's face contort in anger,
"Bitterness doesn't suit you Naala, I can't see her because of what? Because you're a bitter bitch," Dave said with an angry expression,
"Shut the fuck up," Naala spat, "You keep talking to me like you're crazy and see if you'll ever see Sinai again."
"I'ma take you to court," Dave shrugged,
"Take me to court then," Naala replied, "She's coming home with me so you can go," Naala said turning away from them,
"Let's see how far you will get in court when I tell them about her living in abusive household," Dave spat,
Naala looked at him with a hurt expression, "That was a low blow," Dave knew how much Naala blamed herself for staying in that relationship and to throw that back in her face was cruel. "Sinai is staying with me until further notice," Naala added, that comment had thrown her off.
"Mama this is the shit I'm talking about, I shouldn't have to fight to see my kid!" Dave shouted as Naala walked away,
"You wouldn't be fighting to see her if you had an ounce of respect for me," Naala said tilting her head to the side, "But you don't, so I guess I will see you in court,"
"Now Naala don't bring Sinai into the problems in your relationship," Sonia said holding onto Naala's arm to stop her from walking away,
"All due respect Mama, check your son before you try and check me,"
"Trust and believe I'm gonna check him alright," Sonia replied giving Dave a dirty look,
Naala didn't get to reply before Sinai came running out and into her arms.
"Oh my baby," Naala breathed out holding onto her tightly, "Are you okay?" She asked her rubbing her back,
"I'm scared," Sinai muttered into Naala's belly,
Naala sighed and looked at the white woman that stood closely behind Sinai,
"I'm Karen Driscoll, from Child Protective Services," The woman spoke holding her hand out for Naala to shake,
"Naala Love, I'm her mother," Naala spoke, shaking her hand. The lady then shook both Dave and Mama Sonia's hand.
"There's nothing to worry about, I'm only here as a courtesy due to the arrest and the lack of another adult in the car." Naala cut her eyes towards Dave,
"Okay so we can just leave?" Naala asked the lady,
"Yes, I don't see anything that worries me in this situation, if anything Sinai wanted to get back to her daddy," Sinai had been crying the entire time to return to Dave,
"Thank you," Naala smiled before taking Sinai's hand, "We're gonna go home now baby," She said looking down. Naala knew that Dave still had another day with her but after what had just happened she was not leaving them alone.
"Naala don't fucking piss me off," Dave said stepping in her way,
"Dave get out of my way," Naala stated blankly,
"Oh I'm Dave now?" He asked, "Lemme just talk to you quickly Love, please?" Dave asked,
Naala sighed and dropped Sinai's hand, "Go wait outside with Grandma for a second Nai," Naala said to her before kissing her head. Sonia led Sinai out of the station and towards her car.

"What is it?" Naala asked with her arms crossed under her breast, her belly protruding through her dress. Dave couldn't lie, she looked amazing even when she wanted to kill him.
"Why you being like this?" Dave licked his lips, "You bugging out when I'm with Millie, she's carrying my child, get used to it,"
"I'm bugging out because you have my daughter around someone I had to put my hands on! That's not fucking cool and then on top of that she's all over Instagram posting her," Naala seethed, " I don't care about what y'all do in your spare time but leave my child out of it."
"But you clearly care Naala," Dave replied moving closer to her, "Let me come home, it's killing me being away from you two,"
Naala burst into laughter, "Are you on crack?" She asked, "Goodbye Amir," She said turning on her heels,
"I'ma call you when you not acting like this," Dave mumbled,
"If it's not about my child don't call me," Naala said over her shoulder,
"You're mad childish -," Dave said but stopped when he saw Naala doubled over in pain holding her stomach. He rushed over to her,
"You good?" Dave asked with a concerned expression,
"Yes," Naala gritted, "I think it's a stitch," She said straightening back up, she got those often.
"Nah I don't think so Love, let me take you home," Dave said with his hand on her back,
"Let go of me," Naala said with a pained expression, "I'm good,"
"Naala you're clearly not okay!" Dave snapped, "Just let me help you," He said lowering his voice a bit,
Naala moved away from him and let out a breath, "I'm fine now, it's passed,"
"I'on trust that," Dave mumbled, "Text me when you get home, please?" Dave asked. Looking at how worried he was, Naala nodded,
"Only this one time," She said, "I told you if it isn't about my daughter then I don't need to speak to you," She spoke, this had never happened before and she was scared.
Naala left the station and walked over to Sonia's car,
"Thanks mama, I'll take her home now," Naala smiled lightly, picking Sinai up so that Sonia wouldn't notice she was in pain.
"Stop picking that girl up Naala, you are pregnant" Sonia advised from the driver's side,
"She's my baby," Naala replied as Sinai laid her head in the crook of her neck,
"I know but you've got another baby to think of," Sonia said softly, "Y'all need to reach some type of middle ground, for your children." Sonia added, speaking about Dave and Naala's relationship,
"I hear you mama but can't you see the way he speaks to me? I can't keep going back and forth with him - it's draining," Naala replied feeling like that shooting pain again. She shifted uncomfortably,
"I'm going to speak to him about that," Sonia said softly, "Will I be seeing my grand baby at Christmas?"
"I don't know mama," Naala spoke truthfully. The last time she was around Dave's family it didn't go well and she didn't feel like being judged again.
"Please mommy?" Sinai asked lifting her head up from Naala's shoulder,
"Maybe," Naala smiled, "Let's get you home baby," She said directly to Sinai. Naala hugged Sonia and walked back over to Dave's Tesla which she was still driving.
"I need a new car," Naala mumbled to herself, she hated driving his car.
Naala strapped Sinai in the car and got into the drivers side. She watched Sonia pull off without Dave and raised an eyebrow. She looked around to see where he was and saw him approaching the car. He gestured for Naala to roll down the window,
"What?" Naala said rolling down the window, the pain intensifying, "Shit," She whispered as her stomach tightened,
Dave spotted her disgruntled face and pulled the car down open,
"It's still hurting?" He asked rubbing her arm,
Naala couldn't even get the words out, she was in excruciating pain.
"Mmm," She hummed nodding her head, tears still running down her face.
"Is mommy okay?" Sinai asked as she watched her mom in pain,
"I don't know," Dave replied honestly, "Come on Love, I'm taking you to the hospital,"
Naala nodded and tried to get out of the car before she let out a loud cry,
"Amir it hurts so much," She cried whilst holding onto him.
"Fuck," Dave said as he carried her out of the car. He quickly put her in the passenger side. Dave started the car straight away and sped off,
"You bleeding or anything?" Dave questioned putting his hand on her leg, Naala shook her head and tried to move his hand,
"Get off of me," Naala gritted out as she threw her head onto the headrest,
"Even in pain you're still a bitch," Dave smirked but stopped straight after he saw Naala's evil glare,
"Sorry," Dave mumbled, it was not the time for jokes.
"I can't have this baby now," She breathed out, "They're not ready,"
Dave rubbed her thigh, "Don't think like that," He spoke,
"It hurts so bad," Naala cried shifting in the seat,
"It's okay mommy," Sinai said from the back seat,
Naala smiled lightly and wiped her eyes, the pain now unimaginable.
"Thank you baby," She moaned breathing out,
"Hurry up," Naala groaned now leaning forward and rocking her hips.
"We almost there, shit" Dave mumbled. He was putting on a brave face but on the inside he was terrified.
After a long 20 minutes, Dave was finally pulling up to the hospital. He ran in to get someone and they came out immediately with a wheelchair for Naala.
"I'm not getting in that," She cried, she hated wheelchairs because they were very uncomfortable.
Dave sucked his teeth and picked her up, putting her in the chair. He got Sinai out of the car and followed behind the nurse that was pushing Naala into the hospital.
They got Naala situated in a room and her doctor who happened to be on shift came in to check her out.
"We are going to have a listen to baby's heartbeat to see if everything is okay," The doctor explained putting the cold gel on her stomach,
The baby's heartbeat rang loudly through the room, Naala let out a sigh of relief that the baby was still breathing,
"Baby's heartbeat is strong but very erratic, they are most likely in distress," The doctor said putting on gloves for an internal examination,
"Distress?" Naala questioned with a worried expression,
"Why he gotta do all that?" Dave frowned as the doctor inserted his fingers into Naala's vagina to feel if her cervix was soft enough for delivery,
"It's his job," Naala rolled her eyes, "It's not any of your business anyway," She added making Dave suck his teeth.
"Unfortunately it looks like your cervix has softened and the pain you are experiencing is contractions," The doctor spoke,
"Contractions?" Naala questioned, "Isn't it too soon?"
"This can happen in very rare cases but the baby is in distress. We need to deliver today," The doctor finished,
Naala sat up quickly, "I'm only five months, is it safe?" She said with a worried expression,
The doctor gave her a sympathetic look, "I understand that this is very alarming but the baby isn't doing very well and this really is the only option - we can't wait," He explained.
"What could have caused this?" Dave asked, he had a feeling that it was the unnecessary arguing him and Naala had been engaging in.
"It could be stress, it could be high blood pressure but most times it's because the baby is ready to come,"
Dave nodded, "After birth what happens?" He quizzed. He was trying to ask as many questions because he knew Naala wasn't in the right mind set.
"I can't tell you that I'm afraid," The doctor spoke,
Naala sighed and put her hand into her hands and cried, "Will my baby survive?"
"Our baby," Dave added holding her shoulder,
"I will do my best to save your baby, but I can't make any promises," The doctor said emphatically,
Dave pulled Naala into a hug, "We got this baby, you are so strong," He muttered into her hair holding onto her tightly. For once Naala didn't try and move away, she rested in his arms - this is the safest she's felt in weeks.
"We're going to wait and see if your contractions get closer together, if they don't we will have to induce you," He said,
Naala couldn't reply, she was trying to wrap her head around the fact that she was about to give birth to her baby 4 months early.
"I'll give you guys some privacy, Nurse Brooks is here to help when you need her," The doctor said before leaving.
"Love?" Dave said as Naala stared into space,
"Mmm," She hummed looking up at him,
"They're gonna be fine," He said referring to the baby,
"You don't know that," Naala spoke quietly, "You really don't know that,"
"I do know that, Brewster's are strong ass people," Dave said taking a seat next to her,
"Have you called your mom?" She said changing the subject, Sinai was asleep on one of the chairs and she wanted her to go home.
"Yeah she's on her way," Dave said quietly, "Naala I'm-"
Naala raised her hand up, "Don't do that, not here," Naala muttered softly,
"I want to apologise I feel like this is my fault," Dave spoke honestly,
"Let's not play the blame game," Naala said softly before groaning a bit,
"Another contraction?" Dave asked as he stood up and rubbed her lower back,
"Yesss," Naala whined, the pain running through her entire body,
"Okay just breathe, in and out, slowly" Dave coached, breathing in and out aswell,
Naala copied his breathing slowly, groaning lightly.
"I know mama, just try to breathe," Dave said lowly, holding her hand.
"Just like that," He coached, staring her dead in the eye.
After about 60 seconds of pain the contraction calmed down and Naala's breathing was now back to normal,
"I don't think I can do this," She spoke with tears in her eyes,
"You can," Dave replied, "I know you can," He sat back in his seat and ran his hand over his face, he was scared shitless.
After several more painful contractions, a few bounces on a birthing ball and also a walk around the hospital, Naala was now 10cm dilated and ready to push. All the nurses were in the room equipped with everything they would need for a premature delivery. Dave stood right by her side, Sinai had left with Sonia a few hours before.
"I can't do this," Naala groaned holding onto Dave's hand and breathing heavily,
"Naala we need you to push," The doctor coached,
A wave of pain rushed through Naala's body, causing her to squeeze Dave's hand tightly. His hand was practically numb but he didn't dare say anything.
"Ahhh," Naala screamed out as she pushed as hard as she could,
"Ok we can see the head Naala, you are almost there," Sweat ran down Naala's head as she panted erratically, "Dad you can come and have a look,"
"Nah I'm cool," Dave said with a disgusted expression, "I'ma stay up here," He said moving some hair out of Naala's face,
"The next contraction, we want you to push as hard as you can, okay?" The doctor spoke,
"I can't," Naala wailed, "Amir let me up," She said trying to close her legs,
"Come on Love, you can't go nowhere," Dave stifled a laugh,"One more push baby, you can do this," Dave said softly into her ear.
"There's a lot of hair here, one more big push and you can see all this beautiful hair," The nurse encouraged Naala from the other side of the bed,
Naala pushed with all her might, "Ahhhhh," She screamed, the baby finally slipped out and directly into the doctors arms. The doctors wiped the baby down, and put a suction tube into the baby's mouth to clear the airway.
"It's a boy," The doctor said lifting the baby up carefully to show Naala and Dave.
"Oh my God," Naala cried in joy, she laid back in the bed - exhausted.
"Our son," Dave said as he heard his son cry for the time. "You did it," he said to Naala kissing her forehead. They transferred him straight into the incubator,
"Why can't I hold him?" Naala asked, "Amir go and check!" She said trying to see where they were taking him.
"It's okay Love, let them check him out," Dave reassured her, looking over at what the doctors were doing. Dave looked down at her,
"You gave me my son," He spoke with tears in his eyes. He couldn't believe that he had just witnessed his son being born. Suddenly he felt guilty. Guilty that he wasn't here when she went through this with Sinai.
Naala smiled faintly, "Our son," She whispered, her eyes slowly closing. Dave leaned down a planted a kiss on her lips,
"Thank you," He said simply, "Thank you so much,"
Both of them didn't know what the kiss meant but they were both caught up in the moment and emotions were very high.
