《Safe Haven》Chapter Forty Seven

"I'm done." My bedroom door slams opens and Daisy walks in.

"Come in," I say sarcastically and turn from my desk to fully face her.

"I can't deal with the tests and projects anymore." She flops on my bed next to Jamie.

"We only have one week left," Jamie says. "Hang in there."

"But I can't. My brain is dead," she whines.

"Daisy, just chill for a little while. We're studying right now, but you can stay here if you want. Just be quiet." I turn back to my books.

"You're no fun," she mumbles. The room falls silent and Jamie and I get back to studying. But I know Daisy too well and the silence lasts for 30 seconds tops. "So, Jamie," I roll my eyes. "Jess won't spill the beans and you're her best friend and roommate, so you'll tell me. What's really going on with Scott?"

"Really, Daisy?" I turn to look at her. "I tell you we're studying and you want to gossip?" I giggle.

"It's not gossip." She frowns. "I'm just looking after my friend." I shake my head and she turns to Jamie. "You were saying?"

"I wasn't saying anything." She chuckles. "Jess and Scott are 'having fun', that's it."

"And they're ending it this week anyway," I say, "they don't want to leave their 'relationship' up in the air once she goes back to Texas this week."

"Am I the only one who doesn't know stuff again?" Daisy shrieks. "Are you two keeping things from me too?"

"No, Daisy." I laugh. "It's just that Jess is Jamie's roommate, so they talk, and Jamie is my girlfriend, so she tells me these things. That's it. There's nothing to it. We're not hiding anything."

"She's right," Jamie says. "We're not keeping anything from you." She turns do Daisy and lifts a hand as if telling a secret, then whisper-shouts, "but I'm keeping things from Allie." Daisy and I widen our eyes. "I'm pregnant with twins and they're hers." I scream laugh and struggle to breath.

"You two are such dorks, god..." Daisy mumbles and gets off the bed. "You're no use. I'll go find something else to do to distract myself." She closes the door after her.

My laughter fills the room and Jamie stares at me with a smile on her lips. I focus to calm down and regulate my breathing, then turn to her. "So twins, huh?"

"Here's to our last week as Sophomores." Jamie raises her glass and we cheer.

"I can't believe we're halfway done with college," Jess says.

"And I can't believe we're still halfway done." Daisy sighs and stuffs her mouth with a bruschetta. "Seriously, it feels like it's been at least five years."

"Oh c'mon! It's not that bad," Scott says.

"Dude, you just watch movies all day. You can't compare your classes with mine." She huffs.

He laughs. "It's not-"

"Shut up." She shoves the rest of her bruschetta in his mouth and everybody laughs.

"After this week we'll only see each other in a few months," I say and lay my head on Jamie's shoulder.

"And months until I can eat Elena's food again," Daisy whines and takes a bite.

"Good to know we'll be missed just as much as food," Jess says.

"Do you not know her?" I ask. "She'll miss the food more." We all laugh.

"We can text and call each other, but I can't order food from across the country," Daisy says. "I've tried it before," she whispers and I laugh hard.

"Of course you did," Jamie says.

I take a good look at my friends' faces and suppress the sadness that overcomes me. I'm going to miss our crazy dynamic during summer.

"We should do something to celebrate the end of this semester," I say.

"Like what?" Scott asks.

"I don't know," I shrug, "do you have any ideas?" I look around the table.

"What kind?" Jess asks. "Like a party?"

"That's lame," Daisy says. "We go to parties too often for it to be a celebration."

"Too often?" I giggle. "I've been to one party this year." I grab my drink.

"That's 'cause you're lame," she says. "It should be like an orgy or something..."

I choke on my drink and spit it all over myself.

"Daisy!" Jamie laughs and helps me out.

"You know I'm just kidding," she defends herself. "I'm just saying it has to be something out of what we would usually do."

"Like jumping off of the Golden Gate?" Scott laughs.

"Sort of," she shrugs.

The table falls silent, and I try to dry myself and the table as best as I can. I wince at the feeling of wet jeans against my lap and keep pressing napkins all over it.

"We should jump in the ocean!" Daisy exclaims and I look up.

"Are you insane?" I ask.

"The water will be freezing, Daisy," Jamie says.

"We'll just go in and out fast. It can't be that bad."

"As someone who was born and raised in California, and is a marine scientist, trust me when I say it's going to be freezing."

"I second that," Scott says. "The California part, not the scientist."

"I do not want to spend finals week sick," Jess says.

"You're such pussies! C'mon, guys. Last weekend together before summer..." Daisy wiggles her brows. "It'll be fun."

I stare at her. There are so many things we could do to celebrate that would be safer and more normal. But this semester has been anything but normal. Should I do something just as crazy as these months have been? Maybe, but there are better — still crazy — things than going to the beach at night. Right?

"You know what? Fuck it," I say. "I'm down."

"Yes!" Daisy jumps with her arms up.

"What?" Jamie shrieks. "Did you hit your head, Allison?"

"Babe, c'mon. We have to let loose and do something crazy once in a while," I say. "I've had a rough year so far and I think we should do something just as insane to celebrate us getting here. Whether I — we — like to think about it or not, I could've died," I whisper the last part. "I want to celebrate being alive and here with all of you." I look at them. "We're not going in too deep or staying in the water for too long. It's just in and out."

Daisy nods with a grin on her face, but Jamie looks at me like I'm an insane person. Scott and Jess are a bit more neutral, his brows are furrowed and she's blankly staring at the table.

"I'm in." Jess looks up after a few moments and smiles.

Jamie huffs. "The three of you are going to die."

"Make that four," Scott says.

"Even you?" She frowns. "I was hoping you were going to help me knock some sense into their heads."

"C'mon, Jamie." I pull on her arm and make puppy eyes. "Please?"

We stand side by side looking at the dark sea ahead. The salty breeze blows my hair back and I take a deep breath. This is insane, but I want to do it so bad.

After Jamie gave in, we all went to our rooms to change into our swimsuits, grab some towels and other stuff. We met back at her car and hit the road to a beach down in San Francisco.

We take our clothes off and I stand in my bikini, the cool air giving me goosebumps, so I hold myself while the others finish it. Jamie comes close to me and we hold each other as we wait.

"Everybody ready?" Daisy asks.

"To die?" Jamie says. "Not really."

"Shut up," I whisper and lightly elbow her.

"On three we run in, ok?" Daisy says and we all nod.

She counts us down and we dash down to the water like crazy people. I go as fast as I can so there's no time for me to overthink it.

When my brain finally processes the temperature of the water, I'm already waist-deep. I scream and try to run at the speed of light to get out of the ice bath the ocean was. Out of the corner of my eye I catch a glimpse of Scott pushing Jess so she would fall in the water, then running away so she wouldn't catch him.

My feet touch the dry sand and I'm jumping around to warm myself up. Jess comes out of the water with her hair all over her face, screaming threats towards Scott, who by this point was already next to me. Daisy is a bit further in than I got and throwing water up like she's not cold at all.

I look around to find Jamie, but I can't.

I turn back to where we were and there she is. Looking at us.

Dry.

"Are you fucking kidding me, Jamie?" I yell and runs towards her. "You did not go in?"

"It's too cold, babe," she says.

"Oh, I know that, but you don't since you didn't even move." I lightly punch her arm.

"I don't want to go in," she whines.

"Does it look like I care?" She shrugs. "Let's go," I pull her hands, "you're going in."

"No, I'm not." She pulls back.

"Yes, you are." I pick her up and struggle to run towards the water while holding her and stepping on the soft sand.

"Put me down, Allison!" She screams and tries to get down, but I hold her tighter and run faster.

I get knee-deep and trip, letting both of us both fall in. The water stings my skin and I quickly jump out of it, only to meet her eyes staring at me.

"I can't believe you did this," she shouts.

"But I did." I lean in and peck her lips. "And you still love me." I run out of the ocean with her right on my heals.
