《Safe Haven》Chapter Forty Five

"I hate my life." Daisy drops her head on her folded arms on top of the table.

I check my phone and see we've been working on our projects for over three hours. "C'mon, Daisy, you know we have a deadline."

"And I'm dead... line." Her voice is muffled, but her body still shakes with her laughter. "I can't even think anymore."

"And you think I can?" I raise my voice a little. "This fucking software is driving me insane. I've been staring at this screen for over a week and I'm barely over 50% done. I thought we were supposed to be each other's support." I huff and keep working.

"We are, but we've been here for hours." She turns her head to look at me. "You have to chill, Allie."

"I have to finish this project before I lose my mind."

"You already lost it," she whispers, but I ignore her.

I sigh and turn back to my laptop. "Daisy, don't you know how important-"

"Special delivery." I turn around to find Jamie closing the door behind her and coming in holding a paper bag. "I thought you two could use some food to help with the motivation to end today's workload." She grabs a chair for herself and places the bag on the table. She opens it and the scent on Elena's bruschettas fills the room.

"I can't believe this!" Daisy jumps up and snatches the paper bag. "You are the best person in the world. I love you so much." She pulls out a bruschetta, takes a bite and lets out a borderline indecent moan. "Allie, you and Jamie are done, I'm marrying her right now." I roll my eyes and get a bruschetta for myself.

"Well, who am I to get in the way of holy matrimony?"

"You're not fighting for me?" Jamie fakes offense. "Good to know, Allison."

"You're better off with me anyway," Daisy says through a mouthful. "I can offer you great geek discussions. We can spend all night talking about anime."

"That sounds amazing." Jamie rests her chin on her hand. "Do you have any idea of something we could do all night, Allison?" She wiggles her eyebrows.

"What about sleeping? I hear that's really good for your health," I say dryly.

She nods with a straight face. "So, Daisy, how do you feel about a summer wedding?"

"Too hot. Spring or fall would be-"

"Could you do this somewhere else?" I huff and look between the two of them. "I'm trying to finish this and your wedding planning isn't exactly helping."

They stare at me and Daisy rolls her eyes. "Allie, calm down. It's getting pretty late, I think we should go now and pick it up tomorrow."

"Do whatever you want, Daisy. I have to finish this part before I go." I keep my eyes glued to the screen.

"Why do I even bother?" She sighs and grabs her things. "Have fun with Miss Hyde, Jamie." The door closes behind her.

I continue doing the work, but Jamie's gaze is annoying me.

"What?" I turn to look at her.

"You're overworking. You have to rest and take care of yourself." She places her hand over mine. "It's more than ok to care about your projects, but the rhythm you're in is not good for you. It's not healthy" She gets off her chair and sits on the one next to mine. "Here's what we're going to do. You have 10 minutes to wrap up whatever you're doing right now, then we'll go home, take a shower and sleep. Tomorrow I'm taking you out and you're not touching anything related to college." I open my mouth, but she raises her hand. "There's no discussion. I'm setting up a timer and when it's done, we're leaving." She gets her phone and I rush to do whatever I can. There's no use in arguing with her, I know she won't budge, so I'll use the time that I have to do what I can.

"Seriously?" I stare at Jamie while she parks the car. "The aquarium?"

"I promised to bring you here one day, didn't I?" I know it's a rhetorical question, so I don't even bother. "One of my professors works here and got us free tickets. You need to unwind and I need to show you how cute these babies are."

"Babies?" I frown. "You know, people talk about cat ladies, but you are such a fish lady." I chuckle. "Good thing I already know not to expect you to like me, your girlfriend, as much as you like 'fishies'." We get out of the car and close the doors.

"Great! I thought I'd have to tell you, but I'm glad we're on the same page." I laugh and try to push her away, but she kisses my cheek and holds my hand as we walk towards the building.

"This better be good," I say.

"It will blow that tiny little mind of yours."

Jamie finds whoever she had to meet to get our tickets and drags me to the exhibit entrance like a child pulling their parent to a candy shop. Her eyes sparkle when she sees the first tank and I'm quickly smiling. This is adorable.

Tank after tank, species after species, fact after fact, Jamie shows me the aquarium. Of course I can't hold back on the Finding Nemo jokes and references my brain comes up with every other second, but she plays along.

I find myself paying less and less attention to the animals, and focusing on her. The sparkle in her deep brown eyes, the smile that hasn't left her full lips ever since we left the car and the hint of a dimple of her right cheek, her dark hair grazing her shoulders with every movement she makes, her hand holding mine tightly and leading me around.

"Allie." She shakes my arm and I'm back to reality. "You're missing it." She points to the tank in front of us.

"Missing what?" I frown and look at the seahorses. "I don't get what-" My eyes lock on the eruption of ridiculously tiny things coming out of one of them and I gasp loudly.

"He's giving birth!" She jumps and giggles.

People gather around us to look at the tiny baby seahorses shooting out of their dad. They can't be bigger than a grain of rice. They keep coming out and it doesn't seem to have an end.

"How many babies can these things have?" I whisper-shout to Jamie.

She glances at the sign stating their species and turns back to me. "Usually over a thousand." My jaw drops.

"Uh-uh. No way." I shake my head. "You're lying."

"Why would I lie?" She chuckles.

"How can a being that small have a thousand babies?" I point to the seahorse still giving birth. "My dude, my condolences," I whisper to the poor guy. "I can't imagine what it's like to push one baby out of my vagina, but her you are, doing it a thousand times. You're the real MVP here."

"Should I tell you there's a big chance he'll get pregnant again in less than 24 hours?" She giggles.

"Already?" I wince. She shrugs and turns back to the show of nature happening right in front of us.
