《Safe Haven》Chapter Thirty Eight

After hearing what Daisy and Jamie were talking about last night, my heart feels lighter. I know they care about me, but actually hearing it is a different story. When Daisy came in our bedroom, I pretended like nothing happened and we just talked for a while before we went to sleep.
Today my mood is amazing. I don't know why just hearing that conversation made me feel so much better, but it did. I'm all smiles and I don't think the girls even notice. I try to give credits to the stress-free, chill, fun days we've been having, but I know most of it comes from hearing Daisy saying those things. She was right, Jamie just has to wait for a little bit longer. I know I'm really close to getting where I need to be.
Liz told us to go out after lunch so we could see some things around the city. Daisy said we should go somewhere Jamie hadn't been before so she could go for the first time as well. That's how we end up at Forestiere Underground Gardens.
Jamie had no idea how much Daisy and I would love it. The place was exactly what the name suggested, an underground garden. The man who built it made an amazing job with the construction, and the arches and stonework were making us geek out.
"Y'all, I know this is really cool, but aren't you overreacting?" Jess asks.
"The guy did all of this by himself and didn't plan any of it before building," Daisy says. "You two didn't let Allie and I say a word about Jamie's house, so now we'll talk about this place. So if you'll excuse us, we'll take a closer look at everything." I laugh and she pulls me forward to a patio.
We spend a lot of time going around and seeing a lot of cool things, but Daisy and I agree that we shouldn't stay here too long and bore the girls.
We leave the place and Jamie drives around town before taking us to one of her favorite restaurants for dinner. We talk about some things we saw around the city and Jamie is more than happy to show off her hometown to us.
"Guys, we should send a picture to Scott," Daisy says. "Let him know we miss our favorite lady." We all laugh as she pulls her phone out. We pose for the picture and she sends it.
We return to our meal and a few minutes after her phone buzzes. She picks it up and squeals.
"What?" I lean to look at her phone and my eyes grow wide. "No fucking way!" I take the phone away from her to take a better look at the picture.

"What? What is it?" Jess whimpers. "I wanna see it!" I hand her the phone and has the same reaction as Daisy. "Scott met Chris fucking Evans??" She raises her voice and a few people look at us.
"No way!" Jamie steals the phone and starts freaking out. "I hate him. I hate him so much!"
"Chris?" Daisy frowns.
"No! Scott! He met Chris Evans and I just wish I could've been there too." She whines. "Look at him." She turns the screen towards Daisy and me. "He's so hot," she whispers and I laugh.
"Jamie has a crush on a man?" Daisy fakes shock.
"Did you look at him?" She shoves the phone in Daisy's face. "How could I not have a crush on him?"
"I get it." I giggle.
"Thank you!" She smiles and looks at the picture again. "He's so on my freebie list."
I cackle. "Good to know. Is there anyone else I should look out for?" I say without thinking. I freeze when I realize the words that came out of my mouth and look up. The girls are all staring at me. Daisy is smirking, Jess raised her eyebrows, and Jamie... she's just looking at me. Really looking at me. Her eyes are filled with surprise and... hope?
My mouth opens and closes trying to force my brain to come up with something to say, but instead I just look like a fish. Oh the irony.
"We should make s'mores tonight!" Daisy saves me. "We could get what we need on our way back and sit around the fire pit."
Jess jumps onboard and they start planing. Jamie keeps looking at me without a word, but don't need them. The sparkle in her eyes speaks for itself.
"Daisy, this has to be one of your best ideas." I take another bite of my s'more.
"I know, I'm a genius." She laughs and flips her hair.
We've been sitting outside for over an hour just talking. Liz joined us for a while, but went to sleep around half an hour ago. We told weird and funny stories of our childhoods and I was having too much fun. The s'mores were just the cherry on top.
"Y'all, I'm going to bed." Jess stands up and yawns. "I'm so tired I think I could sleep for 20 hours straight." I giggle and we all wish her good night.
I lay down on the couch and look up. "I hate that we can barely see the stars from here." The sky above us is pretty much all black, only a few dots here and there.

"There a few spots further away that have a better view," Jamie says. "But as long as you're in the middle of the city, you won't see much."
"I never really understood stargazing." Daisy frowns. "I know it's pretty and interesting and all that, but I can't look at the sky for a long time. It's too monotonous for me, I feel like five minutes is already too much." I laugh and she takes a huge bite of her s'more. "Shit!" I sit up and see the whole thing fell apart, getting all over her hands and landing on her lap. "It's really hot!" She shoots up and begins jumping around to brush it off her pants.
"Calm down." I giggle. "Go clean yourself."
She rushes inside and I help Jamie pick up the pieces of s'mores Daisy threw everywhere. We put everything in an empty plate and Jamie throws it away. I sit back down and she sits next to me.
"There's a spot outside Portland that is perfect to see the stars." I look up again and lay my head on the top of the backrest. "I went there a few times and it was always so pretty." I turn to face her and meet her eyes already looking at me. "What?" I smile.
"Nothing." She smiles back and looks at the sky.
I keep my eyes on her face and take in her features. She's so beautiful. The smooth lines of her profile captivate me. The outline of her lips catching my attention.
But the beauty underneath is unparalleled.
She's been by my side throughout this journey and I could have never gotten this far if not for her support, strength, and friendship. She was there for me no matter what.
She's incredible. Truly.
I never want to leave her side.
Wait.
Is this what Daisy meant by 'just knowing'? It is, right?
If it isn't, am I going to ruin all of this?
You know what? Screw it. I gotta go with my gut.
I push myself up and get on top of Jamie. Her head quickly turns to me with wide eyes. "What-"
"Shh." I press my lips against hers and she takes a few seconds to react, but when she does, I smile a little mid-kiss. Our lips work together and I've never felt happier.
I run my fingers through her hair and hold her tight. She grabs my waist and pulls me closer while her other hand holds my neck and her thumb brushes my cheekbone.
"Wait." She pulls back a little. "Are you sure?" she whispers.
"Shut up, Jamie." I smile. "Just kiss me." I feel her smiling against my hands and she pulls me back for another kiss.
Her hands move around my back as we both try to get even closer. I don't want to not have her like this anymore.
"Shit." Something crashes behind me and I jump.
I turn around and see Daisy standing near the door, staring at us with her jaw pretty much on the ground. I'm pretty sure I'm blushing a little , so I quickly hide my face on the crook of Jamie's neck.
"I knew it!" Daisy screams. "I fucking knew it!" She laughs. "You two are too damn sweet!"
My laughter is muffled by Jamie's neck, but I turn around to look at Daisy. "Shut up."
"Never!" She jumps up and down. "You told me you two were together, but you 'paused' it literally the next day, so I never saw this." She points towards us. "I'm shipping you so hard."
"What the fuck, Daisy?" I laugh.
"I'm serious!" She claps her hands. "Should I go wake up Jess?"
"What?" I say. "No! Let her sleep."
"Yeah, you're right." She nods then gasps. "Oh! Sorry! I'll leave you two alone. Don't do anything I wouldn't." She wiggles her eyebrows and runs back inside.
I turn to Jamie and we look at each other before we burst out laughing.
"She's insane," she says mid-laughter.
"You think I don't know?"
I look her in the eyes and we stay quiet for a while, just enjoying each other.
"So..." she breaks the silence.
"So..." I mimic and giggle.
"What was this?" She smiles.
"A kiss?"
"I know that." She nudges me. "But what does it mean?"
I grin and grab her face. "It means I'm all in." I squeeze her cheeks. "Let's do this. For real."
"For real?" She furrows her brows and smiles.
"Yeah..." I chuckle.
"Meaning..."
"C'mon, Jamie." I laugh and throw my hands up before returning them to her face softly. "Will you be my girlfriend?" She grins, but stays quiet. "James, you better say something before I leave you here."
"I can't believe this James thing is sticking," she whines.
"Only if you don't answer me." I punch her lightly.
"Yes, Allison, I'll be your girlfriend, but only if you're mine too."
"Hell yeah." I laugh and lean in for a soft kiss.
