《Safe Haven》Chapter Thirty Seven

"'It won't be that hot,' she said," Daisy mocks. "You were right, Jamie," she raises her voice so Jamie could hear her, "it isn't 'that hot', it's melting."

"Right?" I say. "Are you sure it isn't summer? 'Cause it sure feels like it."

"You two should spend July in Texas. It reaches 90 degrees easily. This is child's play." Jess rolls her eyes.

We're hanging out in the small roofed area in the backyard. Today's the hottest day by far and we haven't been able to get in the pool yet. Jamie said she had to fix something before we could jump in, so we've been boiling and hiding from the sun for a while.

"C'mon, Jamie!" I get up and walk towards her. "Aren't you done yet?" I whine.

"Almost there." She gets up from the floor and stands next to me. "I just have to-" she pushes me. In an attempt to keep myself from falling, I grab her, but we both sink in the pool, my sunglasses and shorts still on.

The cool water soothes the heat, but I'm too mad to appreciate that now. "I'm going to kill you!" I scream and try to catch her, but she's already swimming away from me.

"You wouldn't dare." She grins but keeps running away from me.

"Wanna bet?" I swim as fast as I can and manage to catch up, so I grab her arm. "Apologize!"

"There's nothing to apologize for." She chuckles.

"Is that so?"

"Yep."

"Ok." I put my hands on her shoulders and force her underwater. I laugh hard when she comes back up.

"Why would you do that?" She pushes the hair out of her face.

"Why would you do that?" I point to where she pushed me.

"You were dying to get in! I did you a favor!" She laughs and my jaw drops.

"By almost drowning me?" I yell.

"Must I remind you that you pulled me in with you? Stop with the drama, Allie." She giggles.

"You're impossible!" I push her away from me and get out of the pool.

"But you still like me!" I look at her a flip her off.

I walk back to where I was sitting and find both Daisy and Jess with huge smiles on their faces. "Don't you dare," I whisper and point my finger at them. "Remember what we talked about yesterday."

"We didn't say anything!" Jess squeals.

"You didn't have to." I roll my eyes, placing my sunglasses on the table, and my drenched shorts under the sun so it can dry faster.

"You can't get mad at us because of what you think we're thinking!" Daisy shouts and I flinch because Jamie definitely heard that.

"Why are you mad at them, Allie?" Yep, totally heard it.

"They're being stupid, it's nothing." I turn around and see she got out of the pool. I grin and she has no time to think before I tackle her into the water. "Karma is a bitch!" I yell and we fall in the pool.

Since Liz has Tuesdays off, we decided to make a huge meal and Jess and I insisted on helping her and making one special dish each. I take advantage of the amazing chef that Liz is and pay attention to every detail of what she was doing, asking things here and there, and then showing her how to make my abuela's famous ceviche.

We have an amazing lunch. There were so many delicious dishes, and everyone fell in love with the ceviche. Liz even asked if she could steal the recipe, but I told her she would have to ask my abuela. Then for dessert, Jess made us a killer apple crisp that honestly almost made me tear up because it was that good.

"You three ruined me," Daisy whines.

"What?" I furrow my eyebrows.

"How am I supposed to go back to campus food after the best meal I've had in my entire life?" We all laugh. "I'm serious! This was insane! Next semester you two are cooking everything, I don't care. I'll happily clean the bathroom if you promise you'll feed me." I cackle.

"Deal." Jess offers her hand and Daisy quickly shakes it.

"And Jamie has to bring some of your food so we can freeze it, Liz. It isn't fair to present me this level of skill and then deprive me of it."

"I'll see what I can do." Liz chuckles. "And now you two can load the dishwasher." She points to Daisy and Jamie. "The three of us already worked a lot, it's your turn."

Jess and I smile to each other and leave the table skipping just to piss them off. I get my things from my room and take a quick shower to get rid of all the chlorine. Despite the boiling hot day, the temperature drops a lot after the sun goes down, so I take a warm shower and it feels amazing.

I put on some clothes and get out of the bathroom. My hand is holding the doorknob to my room when I hear Daisy and Jamie talking in the kitchen. I'm not one to pry on other people's conversations, but this one catches my attention because they said my name.

"I'm giving her the space she needs," Jamie says. "I'm avoiding any topics that may seem like I'm pushing her, you know?"

"She's fine, babe. Don't worry," Daisy speaks. "I think right now she's only making sure neither of you gets hurt. She's an amazing person and she's looking after you. She knows what she wants. Just relax and wait just a tiny bit more."

"I'll wait as long as she needs." I smile at Jamie's words.

"We know all the shit that asshole put her through." Daisy's voice is lower. "He broke a lot of things in her house, but she already cleaned that up. Now she's polishing the china and is taking a shower before inviting you for dinner. If you know what I mean..." They both laugh and I struggle not to join them and give myself away. I'm sure my face is bright red right now. Only Daisy could say things like that to soothe someone.

"It's fine, I'm just curious as to where she is with all this 'cause I don't want to ask. I'm afraid she could think me asking is and attempt to rush her."

"C'mon, Jamie, you know her better than that. She knows the last thing you want is to push her or make her feel rushed."

"I can't help it." Jamie huffs.

"Babe, look deep into my eyes." She pauses, probably to wait for Jamie to do what she asked. "She's amazing. I've never seen her happier and I know you're a big contributor to that." A stupid smile forms on my lips. She's definitely right about that.

"She makes me happy too."

"So just hang in there and make sure to leave room for dessert ."

I hear footsteps and rush my way inside the bedroom with the dorkiest smile on my face. I love these girls so much. And I feel their love right back.
