《Safe Haven》Chapter Thirty Six

"Ok, here are the rules," Daisy says, "no hair pulling, face touching, or kicking. The two players below cannot touch or be touched. Any questions?"

"We know the rules, Daisy." Jamie sighs. "Now get on my shoulders."

Daisy swims towards Jamie, and Jess comes to stand behind my back. I sink underwater and she sits on my shoulders. I come back up I to Daisy falling off of Jamie's shoulders as she starts to stand up.

"We're so going to win this." I smile and offer my hand to Jess for a high five.

"It's revenge for the poker game," she says and we both laugh.

"Are you two ready?" I shout. "'Cause if you're going to take a while, I think it would be best for my back to put Jess down and only pick her up when you're done." I chuckle.

"Shut up, Allison," Jamie shoots back as Daisy settles herself, and Jess and I laugh harder. "We're good. C'mon, let's play."

We walk towards the middle of the pool with the girls on our shoulders. I stare at Jamie and smirk. "You don't have to cry if you loose."

She raises her eyebrows. "I should say the same thing."

I roll my eyes. "Everyone ready?" I ask and they confirm. "Ok. Three, two, one, go!"

Jamie and I race forwards, and the girls grab onto each other's arms. I hold Jess as firmly as I can and sink my feet on the ground. Daisy can't stop screaming at Jess, but my teammate is, as she put it herself, 'a motherfucking Texan girl who is tough as fuck'.

A few seconds go by and we're all standing strong, Daisy looses balance every once in a while, but Jamie holds her up. Until Jess pushes Daisy to the side and she crashes down.

"We won!" Jess yells and throws herself off of my shoulder. When she emerges, I raise my hand for another high five and we jump around.

Jamie comes back up with her hair all over her face and I laugh hard. "Are you crying?" I fake pout. "I told you we would win." I grin.

"What the fuck, James?" Daisy jumps out of the water.

"'James'?" Jamie laughs.

"Jamie is your name, not nickname, so I can't call you by your name and have the same effect as 'Allison' or 'Jessica', so I'm calling you James." We laugh. "We were winning and you fell!"

"I'm sorry," I frown and say, "did you just say you were winning?" I laugh sarcastically. "I don't think so. Do you agree with me, Jess?"

"She's delusional."

"Round two!" Daisy yells, grabs Jamie by her shoulder and tries to push her underwater.

"Let us know when you're ready, so I can get Jess on my shoulders and we don't have to wait for you," I say innocently and Daisy flips me off, making Jess and I laugh hard.

"I regret everything!" Daisy yells after a jump scare in The Conjuring. "Why did I let you convince me to watch this, Jessica?"

"Because it's fun!"

"No, it's not," I whisper from my seat. My nails are almost digging a hole on the palm of my hands and I'm hugging my knees tightly, but my eyes are glued to the screen.

"It's really good!" Jess smiles. "Look! Here comes another good one." She points to the screen and seconds after that, Daisy is screaming again, but this time I join her.

"What the fuck was that?" I yell, then yelp with pain. I look at my hands and I can clearly make out the imprints of my nails. "Shit," I whisper.

"Damn it, Allie." Jamie pulls my hands to her to have a better look. "You're almost drawing blood."

"It's not on purpose," I whisper and look back at the screen.

"Hold my hands, that way you can squeeze something that will let you know if it's hurting."

I look at her and giggle. "Are you sure? I don't want to hurt you."

"It's ok."

I slide on the couch to sit closer to her so I can be more comfortable and not have my arms stretched out. I rest my back against the couch and look back at the screen. Holding Jamie's hands.

Not even seconds later, Daisy and I are screaming again, but this time Jamie joins us, even if it's for a different reasom. "My hands, Allie." Jamie squeals.

"Shit!" I pull my hands away. "I'm sorry."

"It's fine." She chuckles and grabs them again.

The rest of the movie goes by the same way, Daisy and I screaming, Jamie complaining every once in a while that I'm squeezing too tight, and Jess... being Jess. She laughs and points out random details she noticed after watching that movie a bajillion times.

When the movie ends, it's like I'm frozen. I keep staring at the credits rolling while Jess talks about the other movies of the franchise and stories they were based on.

"This is based on a real story?" Daisy whispers.

"Kinda, yeah."

"I guess I don't need sleep anyway." Daisy lays on her back and stares at the ceiling.

"This movie made me sweat so much, I need to take another shower." Jamie lets go of my hands and leaves the room.

"Can we watch the second on tomorrow?"

"No!" Daisy and I shout together.

Jess frowns. "Well, that was uncalled for. A simple 'no, thank you, Jess' would've been enough."

"At least something good happened because of this nightmare." Daisy smiles and looks at me.

"What?" I furrow my eyebrows.

"You know what..."

"Um, no, I don't." I raise one eyebrow.

"You and Jamie." She wiggles her brows. "Holding hands."

"That happened?" Jess squeals.

"Yep," Daisy replies.

"That's so sweet."

"Enough! Both of you!" I raise my voice and get off the couch to stand in front of them, they look at me surprised. Now I'm pissed. "You two have been harassing me for a few days about Jamie, and I'm done. I know you mean no harm and only want what's best for us, but this is not ok! I know I'm feeling better, we all know that, but that doesn't mean I'm done with figuring things out, or that you can push me towards her." Daisy starts speaking but I cut her off. "Not that I think you're doing that, of course not, but you keep nitpicking stuff. You two think I'm ready and maybe I am, but I'm not sure yet, and I'm not going to place my bet on a 'maybe' when I know a 'for certain' is coming." I run my fingers through my hair. "Of course I wanna be better and get back with her! It's not like I'm doing this for fun or whatever. I really wanna be with her, but I'm not risking it again. I wanna do this right, so I have to be careful."

They stare at me, but don't say a word. I know I snapped, but this has been building up for some time now.

"I need water," I mumble and go to the kitchen.

I fill up a glass and drink all of it. It could've been a slight overreaction, but I had to tell them it was making me uncomfortable.

I put my cup away and go back to the living room. I feel their eyes on me while I walk to the couch and sit down.

"We're sorry," Daisy says softly. "You know we only want what's best for you, you said it yourself. We didn't mean to get you like this or imply anything at all."

"Yeah. We're just joking a little, not trying to push you," Jess adds. "You two are our best friends, we would never do anything to hurt either of you. We care and love you too much to do something like that."

"We're not doing anything like that again. We're sorry we didn't see it wasn't ok to say these things, but now we do, so we're going to respect that and be here for you. We'll support you at whatever you choose to do, whenever you do it."

"We love you, Allie." Jess gets off the couch, and Daisy follows her, to give me a hug.

I open my arms and hold them tight. "I love you, too." I squeeze them. "Even though you two can be a pain in my ass."

"Hey!" Jess pulls back. "I'm not a pain in the ass!"

"Well, I know I am, so..." Daisy smiles and we all laugh.

"I'm back." Jamie comes in and I freeze. Did she hear any of that? "Are we watching the second movie?" I guess not.

"NO!" Daisy screams.
