《Safe Haven》Chapter Thirty Three

"Shotgun!" Daisy yells and runs towards Jamie's car.

"Daisy! I already told you I can't sit in the back!" I run after her. "I get motion sick if I sit in the back for too long."

"Not my problem!" she shouts as she arrives at the car and tries to open the passenger door, but it's still locked. "Jamie, open the door!"

"No. I don't want my car filled with vomit." She walks casually towards us.

"And I don't want vomit on my lap," Jess adds.

"We out-vote you, Daisy." I grin and push her away from the passenger door. "Get your ass in the back." She huffs, but moves to the back door.

Jamie unlocks the car and we all get in. "We'll arrive in three to four hours, so I expect you to have done all you needed before a road trip, but, if not, this is your reminder." We all look at each other and Jamie takes the silence as a 'good to go'. "So buckle up, ladies, 'cause we'll have a wild spring break in Fresno." We all laugh as she turns the car and starts driving.

We talk, sing, and make plans while we're on the road. According to Jamie, the traffic wasn't as bad as she thought it would be, so we would arrive a little earlier than planned. But that didn't stop Daisy from acting like a little kid and asking once in a while "are we there yet?"

"Daisy, does it look like we are?" I point to the window to show the somewhat rural area we're passing through.

"Do you have to pee or something?" Jess asks.

"No, I'm just a little hungry, that's all," Daisy whines.

"Why don't you eat the snacks you packed?" I ask.

"I already did," she replies softly.

"And you're still hungry?" I find her eyes in the rearview mirror.

"It's not my fault I need that much energy to be this amazing, but that's the price I have to pay!" She huffs and I laugh.

"Just hang on for another hour, tops," Jamie says. "We're not that far from Fresno."

"I'll do my best." She smiles and somehow manages to not bother us again until we get there.

Jamie drives around the small streets of her neighborhood and parks in the driveway of a sweet little bungalow.

"Your house is so cute!" Daisy says from the backseat. "I know it's an Architecture Major thing, but I love that the roof isn't one continuous thing, it just makes the design so much more interesting!"

I turn around to look at her with a big smile on my face. "I know! I was about to say that! And the-"

"If you don't want me to talk about fish around you, then please save this conversation for later." Jamie interrupts me while giggling. "Now let's go inside and get settled in."

"But you talk about ocean stuff all the time!" I protest. "I almost never talk to you about architecture!"

"But you do, though," she replies.

"When?"

"Every other time we walk in, out or by two of your favorite on-campus buildings."

"I can't help it! You know that Evans is a nightmare. There are no windows in, like, half of the rooms there! And who the fuck let the Architecture building be the disgrace that Wurster is? That building makes no sense. Neither of them do." I huff. "Whatever, let's go." I get out of the car and Jamie and Jess laugh at me.

We get our things from the trunk and Jamie leads us inside the house. I suppress the architecture nerd inside of me again and make mental notes of everything I wanted to talk to Daisy about. The interior was very clean and modern. The open concept made the room look amazing and I could already tell that kitchen belonged to a chef, there are appliances I can't even recognize.

"Hey, mom! We're here." Jamie raises her voice, but there's no answer. "Mom?"

I walk around the room while Jamie is looking for her mom and I find a note on top of the kitchen island.

"Hey, Jamie!" I grab the paper and read it. "Your mom left a note for you. She said she had to go to work but her phone died when she was about to leave, so she would only be able to charge it when she gets there."

Jamie comes in and I hand her the note. "I guess you'll only meet her later tonight."

"So we won't have her food for lunch?" Daisy whines.

"She left some things for us, I just have to heat them up." Jamie drops the note back on the counter and walks towards the hallway directly across from the entrance. "Let me show you the house before so we can settle down." We follow her. "The bathroom is the door on the left, and my mom's room is at the end. The first on the right is the guest bedroom and the second is mine. We'll have to split between those two, so one of you will sleep with me, and the other two will stay in the guest bedroom."

We stop in front of the guest bedroom and stay silent for a little bit, thinking about the division. I can't stay with Jamie when we're on this weird pause and I'm not ready to press play again. I think. If we sleep in the same room, I think I might rush things, but I'm still confused about everything. I don't know what to do.

"I can stay with you." Jess saves my ass. "We already share a room anyway." She shrugs and goes towards Jamie's bedroom.

"Ok then." Jamie laughs. "My mom already prepped the bed, so you're good to go." She opens the door and shows us the room with a queen size bed on the center of the opposite wall. "I'll drop my things and then we can eat."

"Finally!" Daisy cheers.
