《Lose Myself》Chapter Fifty-Five: Hello Baby!

I picked her clothes up off the floor, placing the toothpaste and toothbrush on the counter and leaving the door a fraction open on my way out. I tossed everything into the laundry basket and went to the kitchen.

I started heating up some milk then moved onto the mess in the kitchen, I'd often had to pick up after myself when I'd lived alone. This was no different. I started by rinsing the dishes and placing them in the dishwasher, there wasn't many and I moved onto wiping the counter quickly afterwards.

I heard the clutter of things in the bathroom and a string of curses following short after.

I let the water warm me up, I was an easily cold person and hot water was my best friend. I closed my eyes letting the droplets form on my face and drip past my lips, it was the best feeling.

I felt a gush which definitely didn't originate from the shower head, but from my lower region. I panicked and knocked over the soaps in the shelf on the wall, I directed my hair out of my face - I knew I couldn't just bend over and pick them up.

I started exiting the glass containment, intending on reaching the towel rack. I gave up on drying myself after a couple sad attempts and just opted to put my robe on without the concern.

"Dominic!" I tied the robe under my belly. I could feel sensations so I instinctively held around my stomach.

"Oh boy." Dominic came in wrapping an arm around me, "Are you sure its time?"

"Of course I am."

He sighed, "Last time I took you there you weren't really in labour Amara, you have to be sure."

I rolled my eyes, "You're just lazy, hurry up."

He led me by my back to the car out front, opening the door and helping me sit down. He ran back inside and grabbed the bag full of baby stuff, as naturally paranoid people we'd over-packed quite a fair bit.

Dominic tossed the bag in the back seat and climbed in, he let out sigh.

I breathed, "Are you sure we can even go there?"

"Its illegal for cops to arrest someone who requires medical assistance, at least that's what I assume."

I huffed, "I hate assumptions."

"They'll probably try arrest us before we leave, it won't travel that you've been signed in until afterwards since a certain level of privacy is taken with pregnant couples anyways."

"If you say so."

I signed Amara in at the front desk, they'd taken her up seven minutes ago. The lady told me which room to go to and how to get there, and I gave her dutiful nod before jogging my way to the elevator.

I don't think the idea of being a parent has exactly sunk in quite yet, but I think it's good that it's happening now. For us, there is no right time. There will always be problems, so we do what we can in our own time. Better sooner than later.

I got into the elevator and another guy followed behind, he seemed pretty proud of himself. We exited onto the same floor and he followed me all the way to the seats in front of the room I was told to go to. I sat down and only glanced at him as he sat right next to me.

"I'm not following you." he laughed. I gave him a small smile. "Is that your girl in there?"

I looked at the door the back at the guy, "Yeah, how about you?" I smiled. He seemed relieved to see I wasn't some psycho, though I wouldn't say he'd have been far off.

"I'm not sure man," he sighed, "She might be."

"I think you'll know soon enough." I assured him before turning my attention back to the door.

It was a couple minutes before he snapped out of his thoughts and started up again. "Is the family coming?"

I shook my head, "Probably not."

There was silence, I guess he didn't like to talk about the deep stuff. That or he didn't want to provoke me.

Amara had sent me a cute selfie just ten minutes ago, she was using someone else's phone and was definitely where I thought she was.

"I'm going." I said getting up, Leo grabbed my wrist - I turned to find him with a worried look on his face.

"Exactly where is that?" my father's voice came from my left, I kept facing the front as Leo slowly released my arm and sat back down. Abrielle near spilt her tea at the sound of the man's presence, poor thing put the cup down shaking like a chihuahua.

"The hospital." I replied avoiding my mother's eye contact as she came in through the door I planned on exiting through. "Regardless of what you say, I care about my family. I will be going now, please move out of my way." I walked until I was face to face with the woman who gave birth to me, she of all people should know how important family is for a new member being born.

She looked the brink of tears, I was starting not to care about that anymore. These people were corrupt.

"Why couldn't they be here, we have midwives." my mother choked.

I narrowed my eyes at her, I was gaining a lot of bad habits from Dominic - he wasn't even here and he was still impacting everyone. "Non dire cose stupide madre." I pushed past her, her eyes widened but I let it be. What respect should I have left for her?

"Wait." Leo stood up, "I'm coming with you. You'll need protection."

We both walked out the front and got into the car I'd sent for minutes earlier. Abrielle came running out, a bit late but I knew she wasn't one not to finish her tea. Poor thing must've chugged it.

"Hold on! I want to come too." she smiled shrugging on her winter coat and taking the seat next to me.

I tapped the driver's shoulder, "The private hospital please."

Some time had passed, I'd heard this labour thing could take a while but I knew if I kept checking the time every time I felt like time had passed; it would only have been a couple minutes.

"Hey," my new friend tapped my shoulder, "It looks like your family is here after all."

I turned to find Claire, Leo and Abrielle entering through the doors of the department. "Idiot." Claire engulfed me in a hug as I stood, "Where was my invitation?"

"There wasn't any time to send one." I laughed.

"Amara had plenty enough time." Leo added grasping my hand and pulling me in for a side hug. "Congratulations capo. L'hai fatto!"

"That praise belongs to the lady in there." I nodded my head towards the room door as I also gave Abrielle a hug. They all turned their attention to the door.

"Stupid." Claire muttered before accusingly jabbing at me, "Why aren't you in there? Huh!?"

"I-I-" I stuttered, "Am I not supposed to stay out here?"

Leo snorted, Claire slapped my arm.

Abrielle held back a smile, "You're supposed to be by her side."

Leo smirked, "For a well educated brute, you sure know near nothing about real life."

"Go!" Claire shoved me in the direction of the door, I sent back a glare but smiled as I made eye contact with my fellow father-to-be who was shaking silently, laughing at the audacity of my 'family' I presume.

I tried to peak in the little rectangle window but couldn't see anything, I didn't want everyone thinking I was scared by looking for too long so I just took a deep breath and twisted the door knob.

I pushed the door open a crack, if I was going to be honest maybe I was little scared. The prospect of birth is not an easy one, from what I've seen on television it is not a walk in the park. And you don't want to be holding her hand during it, but you have to - but you'll regret it. It may not matter when you're holding a baby afterwards though.

I'll for sure have bruises.

A lady in a light blue outfit turned to face me, "So this is your husband?"

"Uh, yes."

There's my angel.
