《a silent cause》seventeen

You arrived in London the day after Kai did. Nara had informed you that he was there and that they'd spent the night together, no doubt also trying to instigate and see your reaction. You'd simply said that you were surprised but it was fine, but you couldn't deny the slight irritation that he had decided to show up when Jennie invited you. You wondered if she invited him too, but since you couldn't find that answer yourself, you decided to push the thought away until you could ask her.

When you texted Jennie that you were there, the second day of filming had already been done. In fact, it had just finished, and you apologized for not being able to see it. She assured you that it was fine, that you had more time to see it, and that she wanted to see you for dinner if you weren't too tired. Though you definitely were tired, you told her you weren't, and after getting settled in at a far less expensive hotel not too far from hers, you took a cab to the restaurant she'd picked out.

It shouldn't have surprised you, but the moment you laid eyes on her it felt like your breath was taken away from you. She was wearing a black dress, the material seemingly thin and soft, form-fitting yet not uncomfortable, and her hair fell straight down her shoulders, and her lips! Her lips were a dark red, from what you could see in the light. It wasn't exactly the brightest, but with every step closer you took, you could see her clearer and clearer. Once she caught sight of you, she stood up with a smile, her arms already extending towards you and pulling you in for a hug once you stood near enough. You definitely didn't look as good as her, just coming from the airport and only thinking to throw on a decent jacket over you, but Jennie didn't seem to mind, her grip on you tight.

"I missed you," she whispered, "I'm so happy you're here."

The words made your heart pick up. You hoped she couldn't tell the drastic change, and you pulled back with a smile on your face. "I missed you too. You look so pretty."

"Thank you." The compliment made Jennie giggle, but not only her. Hearing someone else laugh, you looked to your left to see someone else sitting there.

"A-ah, Kai, hello!" You gasped in surprise.

"Hi!" He smiled politely, bowing his head slightly, "I hope you don't mind me being here. I thought it was a lovely night, I wanted to show Jennie this place."

"Oh, was this your idea?" When he nodded, you blushed in embarrassment, though they wouldn't be able to see it in the light. It was a very pretty view, you noticed. It was an outdoor restaurant, a wooden fence tracing the perimeter. They'd gotten a table right at the edge, and you could see all the pretty sights quite clearly from where you were. He was evidently pretty great at picking places, too, then. "Well, then if anything, I hope I'm not impeding on anything."

Kai shook his head, and Jennie squeezed your hand. "Of course not, y/n. I invited you," she insisted, before taking her seat. The way it was situated, it seemed as though you were third wheeling someone else's date, as Jennie and Kai sat together in front of you and you sat in the chair directly across from Jennie. It helped slightly that Kai had turned his chair a little bit to face the both of you a bit more, but it didn't change the general feeling. Either way, seeing as they were looking at the menu, you went to reach for one too. You audibly gasped as you looked at it. Was there any way you could afford anything in the menu? You couldn't help that at heart you were very cheap.

"You okay?" Jennie asked.

"Oh, yeah, I'm fine," you started, "isn't this... a little pricey, though?"

"Oh, don't worry! I'm paying tonight."

You thanked Kai, your answer being immediate as you were half-expecting the answer already. Jennie eyed you curiously at the indifference in your tone, but you couldn't help it.

"Soo, how was filming?" You asked to break her stare.

Her eyes lit up at the question, "It was great! Jongin was there to see it. I'm excited for you to see it too!"

Jongin? Oh! It took you a second to remember that that was Kai's real name. He didn't seem to care what name you called him, but you felt that there was maybe a certain familiarity that they had for her to call him that instead. As you thought about his name, he agreed with the girl next to him.

"It was amazing, you're gonna love it, y/n." He assured you. The way your name sounded from him sounded so friendly, and it was clear he was making attempts to get more familiar with you. "I'm sure Jennie would do even better with both of us there."

"I'm sure." You chuckled before turning to Jennie. "Hopefully you'll be able to recognize me next to Kai when I have my shades on." Kai laughed, but it was mostly just to laugh at what was meant to be a joke. It was definitely a passive aggressive one, you'd admit, and Jennie knew too since she'd learnt you so well.

"I'd recognize you anywhere, y/n." She replied, her voice as firm as the way she was looking at you. "I recognized you in the crowd all those months ago, didn't I?"

Ah, when you walked into her dressing room and embarrassed yourself. Clearing your throat, you noticed the glass of water next to you for the first time. "I remember that," you muttered before taking a sip. You needed to get control of yourself. You knew you were terrible when you were tired and the lack of needing to be professional at 3 am with your new café job had made it even worse. Thankfully, the waitress came to take your order, smiling politely at the three of you before asking what was wanted. It was also unfortunate, because you had barely looked at the menu at all. After the two of them ordered their fancy food, her eyes were on you, waiting patiently but really a little impatiently for you, so you made the decision on a whim.

"Oh, could I get the, um..." Your eyes scanned over the limited menu one more time. You disliked rich people. They had the worst food options sometimes. "The Cour...D'armoise...Chicken?" You inwardly cringed at your pronunciation, and the waitress chuckled amusedly as she wrote down your order. You knew Jennie was learning French so you assumed she was as bright red as you probably were, but when you looked at her she was only smiling fondly at you. Catching her eye, she averted her gaze to the waitress as she handed her all the menus. The look sent butterflies in your stomach, both from how much you liked her and the slight guilt you felt for being sort of sour. "Oh wait," you called before the waitress could fully leave, "could I have a straw?" You didn't miss the disappointed look from her, but she gave you one anyway. You understood plastic was killing the planet, but was it your fault they didn't have paper ones? As you looked around, your mouth on the straw, you did notice no one else had it though.

"So cute."

Your heart skipped as you looked at Jennie, barely holding back a smile as she pretended to fix her dress. The comment made you smile, and for some reason you looked at Kai, who was smiling at you too. Apparently he seemed to be taking a liking to you, too. You assumed it would happen since you're pretty irresistible, but you couldn't help but feel the same for him. He seemed sweet.

"So, Kai, where are you staying? Or, sorry– did you want me to call you Jongin?"

"Oh, I don't mind." He shook his head. "You can call me Jongin if you'd like, but Kai is good too. Maybe you can call me Jongin when you're mad at me."

The joke pulled a genuine laugh out of you, and you saw Jennie smile again in the corner of your eye. "I'll keep that in mind."

Kai laughed, "Uh, but yeah, I'm staying at the same hotel as Jennie."

"Oh, I see."

"What about you?"

"Oh, just some cheap hotel somewhere." You shrugged. "It's not far from Rosewood."

"Good," Jennie said after taking a sip of her wine, "then you're just a walk away."

"That's me." You quipped. Jennie chuckled before taking another sip, and you watched closely as she didn't take her eyes off of you. You couldn't deny how sexy you thought it was, your breath held still in your chest the entire time. You took a glance at Kai to see if he was watching too, but he was looking at something on his phone. You wondered if she was planning on getting drunk tonight. Probably not, since she had to shoot tomorrow, but you wouldn't complain.

Suddenly, Kai spoke out. "Oh, y/n, Jennie was telling me you would want to see the Tower Bridge."

"Oh, really?" You raised a brow.

"You liked it last time, didn't you?" She asked, "We could go see it after this if you'd like."

And even though you were exhausted, you appreciated that she remembered, so you nodded. "Yeah, of course."

Dinner didn't last long. Your lack of conversation may have contributed to it, Jennie and Kai getting swept up in their own things without you. Plus, half the time you felt yourself zoning out because of the drowsiness you were feeling. Still, though you hated rich things, the service was worth the money, your food coming out quickly and not half bad either. In fact, though you hated to hand them the victory, it really tasted pretty good. In the long run, however, you couldn't say it was worth the price to be eating like that every time you went out. You could probably say you'd have a comparable level of satisfaction getting some fast food burgers.

After Kai paid the check, you all stood up. Though you were tired, you did still want to see Tower Bridge again, so you followed them out without objection. To get the best view of it, the three of you chose to walk on the side of the River Thames for a while.

And Tower Bridge really was beautiful at night. You were some distance away from it but the water between you glistened so beautifully that you preferred it that way. Everyone was going about their business, some simply using this path to get to their destination and some admiring the view the same way you were. The lights on the bridge glowed white and blue, and the only things you could hear were the wind, the cars, and the distant sound of Jennie and Kai talking about things you'd stopped caring about. It was calming, despite the distance there was physically between you and them and the one you'd seemingly put emotionally between you and Jennie. A part of you wished she'd have noticed how tired you were, but she was happily chatting away with her fake boyfriend and her mind was clearly elsewhere.

In your own thoughts, at some point your mind drifted to Tzuyu. You wondered what she was doing; if she was thinking of you. You were so nervous to speak to her that you hadn't even thought about how you were gonna approach asking her in the first place, but you were definitely going to. There was a difference between missing someone and wanting to see them in the present, but you hoped that she felt the latter as much as Sana claimed she felt the former.

You felt a hand touch yours. You instantly knew it was Jennie from the way it felt, and when you turned to face her you saw that Kai had sped up quite a bit and was walking in front of you both now. "Everything okay?"

"I'm good." She smiled softly, squeezing your hand like she did at the restaurant. "But what about you?"

"I'm alright, y'know, just tired." You sighed, throwing in a half smile so that she wouldn't feel terrible. You weren't sure it really worked, though, because slight concern still swam in her eyes. You tried to reassure her again, even though you wished she would have noticed not even two minutes ago. "It's okay, I'll get some sleep later. It's nice out here."

"I knew you'd like it." She said gently. "You know, you look cool with shades on."

"Well, it's how you'll be seeing me most the time."

You knew your response was indifferent, and you could feel it as her grip on your hand slightly loosened. She didn't let go, though, opting to walk beside you in silence for a while. You kept your eyes on Kai, watching as he walked alone, his hands in the pockets of his coat and his head slightly lowered. He was probably mulling some things over, but you couldn't tell what. Probably his plan to get Jennie to choose him. You really had to start working on yours.

"Wait."

You turned towards Jennie, stopping like she asked you to.

"Stand there," she ordered, "in front of the bridge."

You were confused, but you did as she asked. She stood there for a second, scanning the scene before taking her place next to you. You looked over to see Kai still walking, and you thought you might want to call him to wait too, but an object making its way into your hands brought your attention back to yourself. It was Jennie's phone, opened to the camera. You looked up to see a small smile on her face. "Can you take a photo of us together?"

"A selfie?" You asked. It was perfectly normal, but when you thought about it, you two had never actually taken any photos together other than large group ones with the rest of the staff members.

Jennie nodded, "And take off your shades."

"What if someone sees me?"

"Y/n, nobody cares about me right now," she laughed quietly, "just take them off. I wanna see your face in the light."

With some hesitance, you pulled the shades off, and Jennie's smile widened before she snuggled close to you for the picture. You laughed at her eagerness, moving one arm around her shoulder to hold her closer against you. You held the camera up, doing your best to get a good shot of the bridge in it. "That's good, right?" You asked, needing assurance since you weren't a pro at taking selfies.

"Yeah, just one more thing."

"What's tha-?" Before you could even turn to look at the girl, Jennie brought her hand up to your face, turning it for you as she rushed to connect her lips to yours. You stumbled a little bit, your hand gripping tighter to make sure you didn't drop the phone as you kissed her back. When she pulled away, you laughed in complete disbelief, your eyes immediately looking around you, but Jennie had her eyes on you. "You're actually crazy!"

But your panic only made her laugh more as she leaned in, hiding her face in the crook of your neck and gripping your jacket to steady the both of you. After realizing that it was true nobody cared about the two of you, you joined her in laughing, feeling out of breath from both the kiss and the exhilaration of doing something you weren't supposed to. Taking a deep breath, Jennie looked up from your shoulder and back at the camera, which you were still weirdly holding up in the same position. "Okay, take the photo now!"

"O-oh, right!" You nodded, taking a deep breath before smiling happily, Jennie doing the same. Even after you snapped the photo and handed the phone back to her, the smile wouldn't leave your face. You felt as giddy as you always did whenever she kissed you, but it being in public had visibly done something to you.

"Aww, it's so cute!" Jennie cooed, bringing the screen in front of you to show you the photo. It was true, it was a cute photo. The two of you huddled together in the corner of it, so close together, made you look like an actual couple, and the lights looked perfect in the back. Above all of that, however, was how genuinely happy the both of you looked, like there was nothing going on for you guys. "Oh," she added, "and look at this."

She swiped to the right, and you made a surprised noise at the sight. You must've accidentally taken a photo when you gripped the phone as she kissed you, because the photo in front of you was exactly that. Albeit a little blurry, it was still clear what she was doing, and if anything you thought it added to the feeling of it. You exhaled a happy sigh and brought your hands up to hold the phone, looking at it for a good moment before giving it back. You watched her as she put it back in her purse. You felt a desperation to tell her the way you felt for her. To tell her how intense it really was, but you swallowed it down for a better moment, instead expressing your gratitude.

"Thank you, Jen."

Jennie zipped her purse up before looking up at you. "For what?"

"For doing that. For inviting me. For knowing exactly how to cheer me up. I don't know, everything." You expressed. "I'm sorry if I've been kind of a bummer tonight. I'm just... tired... and I don't really know, like, how to do this. With you... and him."

Jennie paused, thinking over what she wanted to say before she moved closer to you. "Don't be sorry." She whispered, lacing your fingers together at your side. "I know you're just tired. I... just selfishly wanted this moment with you."

"That's why you brought me here?" You asked softly. You felt like an idiot. Of course she noticed you were tired. You had to give her more credit than that.

Jennie hummed, "I hope you can forgive me."

You let out a laugh, "Forgive you? A moment with you is all I want."

She smiled at that, but her eyes told you that that wasn't really what she was apologizing for. As she did to you, you squeezed her hand to unspeakingly tell her that it was okay; that whatever she had to do was okay with you, that all that really mattered to you in the end was her. Suddenly remembering Kai, you turned around to look for him, but he was long gone. Jennie laughed at the new panic in your eyes and brought her hand up to your cheek to soothe you.

"It's okay, I told him to go." She giggled. "I wanted to spend the night with you. Right here, or back at your room, or mine. It's up to you." You felt your heart warm up at her words. How on earth was she so perfect?

"How about we go in a little bit?" You asked, turning around to face the water. You leaned your weight against the barrier, Jennie following suit after agreeing with you. Resting your chin on your folded arms, you let the wind breeze past your face, a feeling you always thought was freeing. "You know, you really know me well."

"Do I?" She asked, an amused lilt to her voice.

"I never even told you I liked this spot!" You pointed out, looking towards her. "And yet you knew. You're amazing!"

She giggled, tilting her head at you. "It's obvious. When we went on our little trip back then you walked slower here."

"Oh, is that my tell?"

"I guess it is." She shrugged. "I just know when something has your full focus."

"Can you tell my focus is on you?"

"All the time, darling." Jennie said in mock sweetness, your flirting causing her to roll her eyes, but you could see the slight pink that tinted her cheeks. The pet name made you blush too, but if she noticed, she didn't say anything about it. The wind slightly picked up, and the two of you stayed there in comfortable silence to enjoy it before Jennie spoke again. "This reminds me of when we used to smoke. On the roof."

Your eyes widened slightly, nodding in recognition, "Yeah, you're right, huh?"

"That seems so far away now, right?" You nodded again at her question. She took a deep breath, but it didn't seem like it was a bad one. "Can I tell you what I hope for in the future?"
