《Devils in The Details》To Market We Go

I like omega's scent the most. I also like that the soap and brush make him happy. His smile was so pretty. Pretty omega. Hair so soft. Wanted mine like that too. Omega liked my new cut hair a lot. Omega's slick is better than any fruit and I could smell it leave him. I wanted to taste again. His soft body and skin against mine has me wanting to howl in joy to the moon.
The sun was setting earlier in the days, warning me that fall and winter would come soon. I must make sure there is a lot of wood piled by the house so I do not have to travel far from my omega. I do not want him cold. It is important to always keep fire burning in fireplace during winter, Grandfather saying it helps water continue running through the house. I don't know how it works, but it has not failed since I started living with Grandfather.
My omega and I were holding hands as we headed from the house to the town. The wind was cool against my face, eyeing my omega to make sure he was not cold. Omega made me wear shoes, but I only wanted to wear the socks. Theo did not budge, kissing me. The empty bag for vegetables and fruit was slung over my omega's shoulder, the old clothing bags in his hand for him to throw away in town. He had a small sheet of paper in the vegetable bag with things he said were important to have in a house. I did not know there were other things we needed. We were also going to a bank today, Theo saying that we needed to find out how much money Grandfather left so we could carefully use the money.
I did want to buy more fruits and vegetables, especially if they were available all year round like omega said. Even in winter! Not to mention my need to read more books. I had finished the three basic books Theo bought me, my omega kissing me happily. He promised to make me the food called cookies, but he would do so later after buying other important things first.
"Omega?"
Theo smiled up at me, my heart fluttering like a bird's wings in my chest. I could not help but to kiss his soft petal lips. As soft and pink as the wildflowers I had seen scattered within the forest. Omega nuzzled against my neck.
"You, you were doing voice thing before," I said softly, my omega looking confused.
"Did not growl or make pretty omega sound when happy," I said, Theo flushing at my words, "but came from here."
I pointed at my neck, my mate still looking confused.
"What did it sound like Callan?"
I tried to match what I had heard before, seeing clarity in my mate's eyes after a second.
"Oh! I was humming! It's just a small song, my alpha. Music with no words," Omega smiled. I frowned, not understanding anything he just said.
"Music? What is music? Is music and reading the same thing?" I asked. Theo looked at me, stopping in his steps. I felt my cheeks warm, looking down. It was a look my omega had sometimes when I asked him a question. He would scent sad or upset, making me wish I had not asked. Omega liked when I asked him questions. Even said so.
"Callan, my alpha, you will like music. I'll figure something out. I do not have a great singing voice, but I will teach you. I'll teach you everything the world has to offer," My omega was gleaming at me. Cheeks warm, pretty forest green eyes thrumming, making my belly feel like butterflies were inside. I smiled in relief at his words, hunching down to kiss his warm lips. Omega laughed, kissing me many more times, over and over until he made us start walking again. Our fingers tangled together, my nose getting hit with the scent of many people once more.

My mate explained a little bit about cars, but I was still wary of them. Many more people were looking at me than last time, making me shuffle the bangs my omega had cut for me, over my right eye. I did not like them looking at me. No one called me monster, so I could only hold my omega's hand tighter.
Theo wanted to look up things about the Elders I had mentioned, saying that we were going to the library today instead. I was pretty sure library and bookstore were the same thing, even if omega said they weren't. I knew omega had known what the Elders were when I told him my story, but he said he would explain more to me later. He had to look up much information so he could share everything he knew and all that the books said. Omega did not want to tell me something false, or a lie. I do not like lies. Many of the books I was starting to read had people in them that told lies. Lies were what Grandfather warned me about too.
Omega said I had to be very quiet in a library. A very old woman was shuffling about, placing books on shelves. She had these things on her face, making her eyes look huge. My omega had giggled, telling me about glasses. That glasses could help someone see things that were far away or close up, depending on what a person needed. I knew my omega's mind had wandered to something after he told me, but seemed to tug me along through the bookcases. I think there were more books here than at the bookstore! I was not as overwhelmed this time. My lips smiled though, at how many more books I would one day be able to read.
It did not take my omega long to find a few books on Elders, borrowing them from the library. Omega said you do not need to use money when you borrow, but you must bring them back; can not keep. He said you can only borrow a few things in the world without paying for them, everything else you had to buy.
I know my omega was not happy with what he read in the books, having glanced at a few pages. His pretty face having a frown. I knew that in turn it would mean I would not like what it said either.
We stepped into another store, the scent of paper everywhere. It smelled differently from the library. Omega tugged me to an older human man, my omega asking for a P.O. Box. I asked him what that meant and why we had to buy a box. It stood for post office, a place where you can write letters and send them to people. We needed an address, but Grandfather's house did not have one. I did not understand many of the words my omega said, but he made me sit to have a picture. The flash burned my eye, making me panic. I saw sun spots in my eye, rubbing my eye hard. Omega had to calm me down, nuzzling and kissing me. The older male had told me to hurry up, my omega snapping at him and growling. The human had gone pale, looking away from us. Pretty omega made sure I was sitting not far, having the same thing happen to him; but he had hurried back to me all the same. Did not like picture thing.
"It is okay, my alpha. This is the identification I was telling you about. You must keep this with you always when we come to the town," Omega said, having given me what was called an ID card. I looked down at the small picture with all the tiny words on it, realizing the picture was me.

"My alpha always looks handsome," my omega chuckled, kissing my neck. Omega liked my tiny picture and I liked omega's tiny picture. I did not think it was possible, this picture thing. How did they get my face on there? How did it work? I think I would like lots of pictures of my omega if that bright light did not hurt my eye.
My omega grabbed papers from the older human male, grabbing a shiny thing from him. Omega said it was a key, and the key was special because it was the only one that could open our box. The older human male was the only other person who could also open the box in case we lost our key.
The box was small and empty, my omega letting me open and close the box with the key. Both the key and my ID were in my pocket, my omega's ID in his pocket. I trusted that my omega knew what he was doing, happy to hold his hand once more as we left. I was glad for the sun touching my face, not liking the false sunlight within the post office.
"You did really well my alpha. I am sorry I did not warn you about the flash for the picture. Is your eye okay?" My omega scenting worried, getting on his tip toes to peer into my good eye. I nodded, nuzzling my nose against his small one.
"Was scared. Could not see omega anymore. I do not want that," I said sadly, Theo hugging me, rubbing his cheek against my chest.
"Oh alpha, even if you could not see me anymore, I would tell you everything. I would still be yours and you would still be mine," omega's soft words easing my heart. He kissed me warmly, my breath becoming his breath.
"Now for the bank, my alpha. Remember what I told you?" Theo asked, rubbing his hands down my arms. I nodded seriously. The person at the bank would ask me lots of questions I had to know the answers to, and see ID. It had my birth year on it, which even I did not know what day or year it was. My omega scented so sad when I told him, having to sift through Grandfather's things to see if he could find anything. There was only a slip of paper with bank information on it, my omega having to do the rest.
Omega said birth day was October 3rd, making me wonder why Grandfather had chosen that day, in the small pile of papers omega had found. Theo said Grandfather had done many things for me when he had gone to the town, saying it made things a bit easier for him. I was glad for that at least.
I do not think I like the bank. The she-wolf who spoke with us kept saying things to me that was upsetting my omega. I answered all the questions, handing her the slip of paper my grandfather had kept. Theo had snarled at the woman when she had run her hand up my arm, yelling at her that if she did not do her job that we would need to see a manager about her behavior. She-wolf backed off and I was glad. Did not want to do the bank questions wrong or have she-wolf be mean if I got one wrong. Theo had made sure the money account was now in my name instead of being a secondary, whatever that meant. I had to answer two questions, called security questions, whenever I went to the bank if I needed to get paper money out.
They also gave me new black card that did not have Grandfather's name on it anymore, but my name. Omega said I can keep the old card since it has Grandfather's name on it, and I did not want to throw it away. I was happy that omega told she-wolf my last name was the same as Grandfather's. I knew that there were some parts to getting the account changed that should not have happened so easily. Omega was very good with fancy words and very sharp of wit, making she-wolf nervous and hurry to get things done. My mate snatched the final sheet from the she-wolf, growling low at her once more as we left.
Omega so smart, and pretty when getting she-wolves to go away.
"Oh," Theo said, stopping after a long minute to read the sheet outside of the bank. I was sure he did not want either of us around that she-wolf longer than we had to be. I did not like her touch, omega promptly rubbing his hand over my arm where she had touched me. I nuzzled into my omega's soft sweet hair when he did that.
"Well, my alpha, I do not think we have to worry about money. You said your Grandfather was a tracker?"
"The best," I puffed up proudly, "taught me many things."
"Wolves who work in the pack as warriors, trackers, guards and so on, get paid differently by the pack alpha. It's an effective system where others can do human jobs to help pay for some of the pack bills while getting protection, a home, and food for free. Your Grandfather must have worked very hard and even tracked down bad people to get some of this money," Omega said. I hummed at his words, Grandfather telling me something similar.
"We buy food still?"
"Oh yes, my alpha, but lets buy coats first."
Coats are odd. Very warm and puffy like many layers of clothes. It took omega a little while to find a coat that he liked on me. I did not mind as long as I could move my arms. Omega found a coat too, making me happy that he said it would help keep him warm in winter. It was pretty green that matched omega's pretty eyes. Omega also bought me another black shirt like my favorite one, except this one was black with long sleeves and had a large crescent moon on the back. I liked it a lot too.
Next was my favorite part, the farmer's market! Theo made me pay with the paper money again, which I was getting less nervous about.
We bought a few of the same vegetables, but omega made sure to buy lots of different ones. He got asparagus, a purple potato along with a few of the soft yellow potatoes I liked. Very small tomatoes, a big tomato, spinach, a small bundle of kale, a jalapeno, a head of broccoli, a head of garlic, corn cobs, and radishes. We had plenty of onions, carrots and potatoes at the house since it was getting to the end of their growing season.
I was excited when we got to the fruits. Omega bought some of their strawberries to see if I would like them more than the forest strawberries. We bought more blueberries, blackberries, pears and a few oranges. I saw him sneak in a lemon making me scowl. Omega only laughed, hopping up to kiss me. He showed me watermelons, making me gasp at how big they were. Indeed as wide as my omega's shoulders! He said he didn't like how they looked, so he bought a thing called a cantaloupe instead. We also bought a mango, a pomegranate, a date, and an avocado.
Omega grabbed two more spices, dried rosemary and dried basil. He said they were plants that were dried in really high heat, like the oven, and then crushed super small. I understood what omega meant when he said that some fruits and vegetables would be available during winter, but there were some fruits and vegetables I did not see that were there last time. That was okay.
"One last place my alpha, and then we can go. Was it a lot again?" My omega asked. It had been, the post office and bank making me so tired. I nodded, my omega hugging me tight, telling me I did amazing. That we would do only fun things the next time we came so that I am not so tired. I smiled at him. The town was not my favorite compared to the forest, but it made omega happy. I also learned a lot and watched how other people acted with one another. My heart hurt when I saw mothers holding children, or others talking in small groups. Friends.
I shook my head from my thoughts. Omega was more than enough. What you do with your mate though, you do not do with your friends. Omega had brought up his slick and I nearly snarled at the idea of anyone even touching him like I did.
"This is a general store, my alpha," Omega said. He said it would have all the things we would need for the house. My nose was hit with an array of scents. The building was made of wood, like the house, and there were many things that I had never seen before.
Omega had bought a basket for the laundry and things for cleaning the house. He made sure all of the cleaning things had 'natural stuff' in them so it did not hurt my nose. He bought us new toothbrushes, my Grandfather only having a few in the house, but mine was very old and I had given the last new one to my omega. They were made of wood except for the brush part. Omega also bought floss and a different toothpaste, Grandfather having only stocked small ones under the sink. I did not like their taste very much, but Grandfather made sure teeth were always brushed and I was always showered. Theo also bought razors, some for himself and some for me. He said it would make it easier for me to shave, but if I didn't like them then I could continue to use the small knife. I heard omega muttering about never taking toilet paper for granted again.
There was also food in the general store. Omega bought a very heavy bag of rice, a few boxes with a strange word on them saying noodles, a bag of dried beans, a bag of flour, and a small thing of something called yeast. He bought a few clear, empty boxes for food. It was supposed to stop the food from rotting so quickly. I was curious about the dry food, having never seen or smelled it before.
Omega told me to find a shampoo smell that I liked for myself, kissing the back of my hand as he went deeper into the store. He said he was looking for something. A surprise for me so I couldn't look. I found a smell I liked, similar to the soap Grandfather kept in the house, but smelled more like the forest outside. I turned to see odd tools by an axe. I curiously went over, seeing a tool that the older man from the wood store was using. I touched it, feeling how smooth it was under my fingers.
"Do you like woodwork?"
I turned quickly, seeing the older man who had been in the wood store on the edge of the town.
"I believe I saw you some time ago. You looked like you was wantin' to come into my store."
The older man reminded me of Grandfather. He had a musky scent of an aged beta wolf. His hair was peppered with gray, his face not as wrinkled, but he had bright blue eyes and a soft smile. He was thin like Grandfather, but his hands had different calluses than what my Grandfather had. I flushed slightly at his words. Omega and Grandfather were the only two people I had ever talked to in my whole life.
I looked down nervously, looking at the tool in my hand.
"What, what were making before?" I asked softly. The man cocked his head at me, his smile growing.
"I was makin' a chair. The woman who ordered it came to pick it up a few days ago. I'm workin' on a table this week. Got the best shop in town. It's been handed down through my family for years. Most young bucks like yourself aren't usually interested in things like that."
I shrugged at his words, looking at all the tools in front of me.
"Wish knew how to use. Like working with my hands. Only used to finding wood and chopping with axe," I said. The old man seemed to hum to himself, rubbing at the scruff along his jaw.
"What does this do?" I asked, pointing at the tool I had seen the man use before from the window. The older man's eyes lit up brightly, talking happily. He then pointed to other tools, talking about the different kinds of sandpaper and the many different kinds of woods. I was trying to keep up with all he was saying, overwhelmed that there was so much. I was fascinated by it all.
"My alpha, who is this?"
I turned to see my omega had paid for all of our things, quickly taking the heavy looking basket from his arms since he was already shouldering the vegetable bag. Omega was right though, a basket made carrying things much easier!
"Oh, pardon me. I don't think we introduced ourselves. Got to talkin' about woodwork," the older man said.
"The name is Tod Jameson, nice to meet you," the man said, reaching out his hand towards me. I felt omega elbow me gently.
"Callan Marsh," I said quietly, sticking out my hand like him until the man grabbed mine enthusiastically, shaking it. Odd.
"Talking about woodwork?" Omega asked and I knew that voice. That was omega's tricky voice. He used it at the post office and bank today.
"It's hard to find young men interested in the topic is all. Wanted to know more about the tools," the older man said sheepishly.
"Well, I was planning on doing this later, but what do you think about teaching him? I know my alpha would like to learn, and I'm sure if we talked about it, we could pay you for your time," Omega said. I gaped at him. Could we do that? Was that possible?
"Well now, that's an interestin' offer! One I haven' gotten before. How's this. For me teachin' him, he helps me in the store. Iffen he gets good at the work, I'll start payin' him," the older man said smugly, crossing his arms.
