《Their Human》Chapter seventeen: his escape

I looked up at the red lights, my hands still on my face and wiping my tears. They had stopped flowing, my emotional pain getting replaced by curiosity. I wasn't sure if I was surprised about Sei- Silas escaping or not. He did let me know so I was not too shocked about it yet hearing the alarms did freak me out.

I stood up from the toilet and made my way outside of the stall. I wondered if Mr Hughes was in the building. I still didn't know how the hunt went but since Sharlene came back alive, I'm assuming that all went well for them.

Wait, Silas said it was a failed task earlier so perhaps it didn't.

I stepped out of the restroom and into the main lobby, where everyone usually sat if they were waiting to be attended to. The exit was closed shut and the blinds were closed, making the only source of light be the red light from the ceiling. It looked like every light had changed colour. There were no people inside the lobby, making me feel rather uncomfortable considering that it was so full just a while ago.

Putting aside my discomfort, I made my way to the direction of the cafeteria, finding the double doors also closed. I pushed them, the objects refusing to budge. I was pretty sure that there were people locked in there, at least they would be safe.

"Rutherford!" A woman called out, making me turn and look behind me.

"Felisha Wang?" I asked as the redhead approached me. She grabbed my wrist and pulled me with her, making me rip it away from her hold. She turned to look at me like I was crazy. "Let's go! That thing is on the loose. We can't be exposed like this."

"All the doors are locked. We're stuck on the hallway." I told her, furrowing my brows. Her blue eyes looked red from the lights above us, her pale skin looking sweet pink.

"Damien found a spot. There's like fifteen of us but you should fit."

Why do I always have to hear that man's name?

"I'd rather die than be anywhere near Sharlene and Damien. Go, let me be killed by him." I told Felisha, crossing my arms. I didn't have to go anywhere in any case. Silas wasn't going to hurt me now that I was his soulmate. It made me feel some sort of ease to know that. To know that I didn't have to be as scared as the others.

"Him? That's no him, ford. That was a beast and it'll kill us all." She whispered harshly, grabbing my wrist again. I looked at her in confusion. What was she talking about? They said that Silas escaped, why were they so scared to go out and capture him like they did before?

"What beast?" I asked her hesitantly.

"The one we were after in the woods. We caught it, but it escaped." Felisha explained, her eyes widening at the same time. "I don't understand, there was one enclosed in the cells at the underground lab. Next thing I know, it's gone and there's a huge hole on the door."

I stared back at her in horror, suddenly remembering the two red eyes and the deafening screeches I had heard. That was what was loose? Not Silas? That terrifying and large beast was the one running around the place?

Screeeeeeeeeee!

"Oh my goodness!" Felisha exclaimed, letting go of me and running away. She sprinted towards the end of the hallway, me following suit and running behind her. "Wait! Don't leave me!" I called her, running faster to try and catch up with her. I screamed when I felt the ground shaking, heavy and large steps charging behind me. It screeched again, making me cover my ears and run faster.

It felt like I was in some horror movie, and I was sure that I would be the first to die in this scene. In front of me, Felisha opened a door and shut herself in, locking me outside. "No! Felisha please! Open!" I stopped at the door and started banging my fists against it, begging her to open the door for me. I could hear a lot of people talking in there but not one of them ever said, 'open the door for her'. They all wanted me to stay out, they were feeding me to this thing.

A loud growl came from behind me, similar to the one I had heard in the woods before. I kept my face towards the door. I was too scared, I didn't want to look at those scorching red eyes. I didn't want to see what would take my life. I just hoped that this would be a fast and painless death.

The next thing I knew, I was being roughly pushed to the ground, making me fall face first onto the cold tiles. I clutched my nose in pain, my eyes tightly shut. Still, I waited for the razor sharp teeth of the creature to slice through one of my limbs but it didn't. Instead, I heard loud banging on the door and it was smashed open, loud screams following soon after.

Multiple people started screaming and yelling for help. There was dispair and fear all around, making the air thicken. The growls and screeches continued on, sounds of bodies hitting the floor and bones snapping filling my ears. The beast was devouring them and hearing that made me sick. I shook off the pain on my own body and attempted to stand up, a large hand grabbing my arm and helping me up.

"Let's go, now!" I heard Damien shout. I looked up at him as he dragged me along with him, Sharlene holding my other arm. Her hair was messy and she looked different. She wasn't scared at all, not like how I was. In fact, it was like our roles were reversed. She saved me. The fearful Sharlene had a brave face and was helping me escape a beast.

"Car keys?" Damien asked, stopping in front of the door to the exit. He let me go once he saw that I was okay. Sharlene looked around the place and nodded. "I have them with me. How are we going to open this door?"

Damien stared at a large vase at the corner of the room and pointed at it. "Let's use that to break it open."

Sharlene looked back where we came from. We could still hear the screeches and growling. She looked back at Damien and shook her head. "It's too loud and it probably won't work."

"Every solution to opening this door is loud, Shar!" Damien yelled in frustration. Sharlene kept her cool, not seeming affected by her boyfriend's tone.

"Then let's use the quickest one. That way, if we get its attention, we'll at least be able to escape." She said, pulling out a pistol from the hem of her pants. "Good thing Hughes gave this to us for protection."

She held it up at the glass doors and fired multiple bullets at it, making me cover my ears. The glass shattered, letting a cool gust of wind in. The screeches stopped at that noise, making the three of us charge out. We ran to the parking lot, Damien ahead and Sharlene behind. I ran between them, heading straight to Sharlene's car. It was small but fast, and I was grateful for that.

She unlocked the blue Toyota and tossed the keys to Damien. He climbed inside the driver's seat and I sat next to him since I was closer to the passager door. Sharlene jumped in the back with no problem and shut the door. "Go go go!" She said, Damien reversing out of there.

As he was reversing, the front of the car faced the main entrance, making me freeze in place when we were faced directly by the beast. It was so much bigger than it looked in the footage of my camera, reaching about seven to eight feet. It was on all fours and had fur, blue fur. It was a familiar blue, a greyish-blue. It's eyes were neon red as they looked back at me with grey pupils. It had a long whip-like tail that had sharp black spikes shooting out of it. It's broad and wide shoulders had black spikes too.

It looked to have a long curly mane that almost touched the ground and it's face looked like one of a lion, it looked scary but so beautiful. There was something about the beast that made me feel, not fear, but attraction. I felt like I should go to the beast, not run from it. It's eyes were locked with mine, making me hold my breath.

Our eye contact was broken when Damien took a full turn and sped out of there, the beast not attempting to even chase us. It jumped back inside the building, making Sharlene sigh in relief and lean back on the seat. I didn't know what to say. I was angry at them but now that didn't even matter because they had just saved my life.

"Thank you..." The words were bitter on my tongue as they left my mouth but they were absolutely sincere. I appreciated that they didn't abandon me, especially since they could have had their own reasons to.

"Don't worry, we have got your back." Damien mumbled. Sharlene hummed in agreement.

"Where are we going now? Your place?" Sharlene asked Damien, peeking her head between the two front seats.

"Tell them to drop you off by the woods." Silas spoke in my head.

'Why?' I thought back, hoping that he'd hear my question. Maybe it was something only they could do but I wanted to try anyways.

''Because that's where I am waiting for you.'' he answered me.

It worked!

'Where are you taking me?' I asked him.

"Home, little rose. We are taking you to our family."
