《The Leader》10

"I see their flag." I lower my voice and crouch down. "We need to figure out how to get it without getting shot."
"Their flag is in plain sight," Finn says, crouching down behind me. "Why would they do that?"
"To make us think we've won," Four says. "They're probably waiting to ambush us."
That's actually kind of smart. I mean, we cannot touch the flag if we get shot, so there's no point in making the flag impossible to find, especially when it is at the very top of the tallest building at the Navy Pier.
"I hope you have some ideas, Four," I say, "because I have none."
He stays quiet for a few seconds, his eyes trained on the tall building in front of us, before speaking up. "I actually do have an idea, but we'll have to wait until Group Two starts distracting."
"Let's hear it," Finn says.
"We're going to go into the building together," Four says. "Finn and I are going to lead the way and fire at the other team to keep you from getting painted. You'll get the flag."
"Shouldn't someone else get the flag?" I say. "I mean, I came up with our plan and divided everyone."
"That's why you should get it," Four says. "Besides, you are shorter and smaller than both of us, meaning you are faster and less likely to be seen."
"He's right," Finn says. "It'll be easier for you to sneak around."
"All right," I say. "Let's do it."
My head snaps up at the sound of guns going off. Six members of the opposing team rushes out of the building with their guns raised.
"They have six or less still inside," Four says. "Their attention is diverted so now is the best time."
"Let's go," I say in a hushed tone.
Four and Finn sprint to the entrance of the building with me following close behind them. Four peeks his head in, making sure the coast is clear, and pulls the door all the way open. I shut it softly behind me.
As we tiptoe up the stairs, my heart starts to beat fast, partly because I am out of breath. I don't want to lose and disappoint my team. I overheard a Dauntless born say that we are going to be scored on this, and I don't want to disappoint my team if I don't get the other team's flag.

Four stops abruptly and ushers for us to stop. He creeps up a few more stairs before popping up and firing his gun twice. I glance up and see two members from the other team with splatters of paint on their shirts. Their shoulders sag and pass us going down the stairs, muttering incoherent words under their breath.
"Nice shots, Four," I say with a smile.
He shoots me a glance and his mouth twitches upward. "Thanks."
We reach the top of the stairs without any complications. We tiptoe to the doorway of the top floor. Four peeks his head into the doorway before stepping into the room. He fires a shot and I hear a groan before another shot is fired. Four backs out the room with a bright yellow splash of paint on the front of his jacket. Four holds up two fingers once out of the room safely, indicating that there are two people still inside.
Finn takes a deep breath before he bursts in the room firing shots left and right. He comes out of the room with a couple of splatters of blue paint. He holds up one finger and I take a deep breath.
"Think that's all of them?" a voice I don't recognize says.
"Probably," Eric says. "There's a slim chance that there's someone on that team that hasn't been shot."
"All we have to do is wait for our team to get their flag?" the voice says. "And then we win?"
"Yeah," Eric says. "They should be close to finding it."
I peek my head around the door and see Eric and the other guy with their backs toward me. I softly and slowly walk in the room and aim my gun to the middle of Eric's back.
"There's a slim chance that your team is going to win," I say.
Everything seems to slow down. Eric turns around and fumbles with his gun. He raises it to shoot me, but I pull the trigger and purple paint splatters on the front of his jacket.
I march over to the flag, a small smile on my face. I frantically wave it around in the air and yell, "We've captured the flag."
My teammates yell and start jumping, obviously excited about our win. A hand on my shoulder removes my attention from the celebration going on down below. I turn my head to see Four standing next to me with a small smile on his face.

"Way to go, Rori."
"Thanks, Four," I say. I glance around him to where Eric was standing, but he is gone. "Hey, where'd Eric go?"
"Oh, he stormed out," Four says. He removes his hand and focuses his eyes on the people. "He is a very sore loser."
"Oh, gotcha."
"That was so epic," Finn says, coming up behind me. He clutches onto the railing, shaking with laughter, before standing back up and turning toward me. "That look his face when he turned around was pure gold."
"We need to get back to the train," Four says, checking his watch. "But great work tonight, Rori. You acted like a real leader tonight."
***
After not seeing him all weekend, I have come to the conclusion that Eric is avoiding me. I climbed the stairs to the roof multiple times, but he wasn't there. He didn't even show up to lunch or dinner.
I'm hoping to catch him after training this morning so I can talk to him, that is if he even shows up.
Four is the only one in the training room when Tera and I walk in. We sit in our usual spots against the wall and I stretch my legs.
"You know," Tera says, "Four is really good looking."
"You got that right," I say, my eyes wandering over Four. "He is definitely not an eye sore."
"What makes him more attractive is the fact that he isn't arrogant."
"Oh, definitely," I say with a nod. "So, you're crushing on Four?"
"Oh, no." She shakes her head. "I'm not crushing on him. I just thought I'd let you know I think he's attractive."
The door to the training room opens and I hold my breath, hoping that the person I want to see is going to walk through it. I sigh when I see that it's the rest of the transfers.
"All right, here are the current rankings," Four says. He flips the board over and continues talking. "If you were on the winning team, you moved up a spot or two, depending on how much you contributed."
My eyes flick over to the board.
1. Raiden
2. Jax
3. Rori
4. Reid
5. Genna
6. Finn
7. Marnie
8. Tera
"Oh my goodness," Tera says, pulling me in for a hug. "Congrats on being ranked third."
"Thanks," I say. "Congrats on getting number eight."
"Dude, you're number three," Finn says, wrapping his arm around my shoulder. "You're the highest ranked transfer. I'm so proud of you."
The door to the training room slams open, making me flinch. I turn around and my eyes lock onto an angry looking Eric. He walks toward us, his eyes never meeting mine.
"Guess what you're going to do today, initiates," he says, an evil smirk on his face. "Everyone is going to run laps around the room until I say you can stop. Go."
I groan and start jogging alongside everyone else.
"Someone is a ball of sunshine this morning," Tera mutters. "I wonder who peed in his coffee."
I burst out laughing and she chuckles along with me.
We run a total of twenty laps before Eric says to stop. I collapse in the floor like a glob of jello. Tera lays down next to me to catch her breath.
"I. Am. So. Tired," she says. "I want to have a chat with the person who urinated in his coffee."
"Me too," I say. "I want to give them a piece of my mind. It'll have to be later, though, when I don't feel like a limp noodle."
"If you don't get off the ground and out of here," Eric says, "I'll make you run more."
We force ourselves off the ground and slowly move toward the door. I swing the door open and let it shut behind me.
"Hey, you go on ahead," I say, stopping outside the training room door. "I'll catch up with you later."
She raises a brow but doesn't question me about it. "Okay, see you. I'll be in the dorm taking a nap."
"Okay," I say with a nod.
I watch her walk away and disappear around the corner before turning and facing the door.
He's gotta come out sometime.
The door swings open. He stops abruptly when he sees me.
"Need something, initiate?" He crosses his arms to look more intimidating.
"I need to talk to you." I step forward, making us mere inches apart.
He gulps at our close proximity and I have to refrain from smirking.
"On the roof."
A/N: Hey, initiates! I hope you enjoyed this chapter, and if you did please comment and vote!

Rise of the Firstborn
[A participant in the Royal Road Writathon Challenge]As the inhibitor rises and the eternal flame is quenched, our lands shall be freed, and only then will the Princess be set to flee. It began with ice. A relentless, bone-chilling tickle of frost that stretched across the lands of Axulran, crawling over the mountain crests and freezing the grassy meadows. Frozen in time, the kingdom fought for political control all across the region of Ellixus, paying no mind to the death and torment they may cause along the way. Cateline Bennett, a princess consumed with ice, found herself lost in a foreign kingdom with nothing but her wits to survive. As she explores this unknown land, she unravels her past and discovers that the magic she had concealed for so long could unleash chaos so intense, it could destroy the world as she knew it. With her untapped magic and new friends, Cateline must vanquish the enemies that threatened the world of Denzethea as they knew it, else they, and all they knew, would crumble to ruin. NOTE: A review on this fiction has indicated that certain themes were traumatizing. While I believe this to be exagerated, I have added the appropriate tag for those who may be sensitive to those themes (fever dreams, delusions, and trials and tribulations).

8 109Game Dungeon
A recently deceased man finds himself imprisoned in a prismatic gem, confused and missing pieces of his memory he wishes to play video games, but to his horror, he is stuck in a world of sword and magic. Hello! I am the writer of Game Dungeon thanks for your feedback! Although my intentions were not to insult the reader I can see how someone would think that way. I have no plans to change it as of now and it's better to put it out there as a warning that I use a lot of words with similar meanings but are used very irregularly. Honestly speaking my English teacher was weird and a lot of words I use are more complicated than they need to be, but again something I was drilled into was not reusing words apart from "I".

8 202Try Again
How do you picture the phrase, incapable of dying? Invulnerability? Invincibility? Immortality? Whatever word you choose, it seems like a useful ability to have, right? While others might think it would be great to never die, I think it might just be a curse. Would you choose to be incapable of dying if it meant that every time you were going to die you just restarted your whole life all over again?
