《The Leader》2

Four ended the tour with us in the dormitory. There are six beds lined up on each side of the room. In the back of the room are the bathrooms, which are out in the open. The showers are unfortunately the same way.

"All right, initiates," he says, "you have ten minutes to change out of your old faction clothes and get to the dining hall. You better eat up and then come back and get some rest. Training starts at 8 in the morning."

When he leaves the room I turn around and claim the bed closest to the door. There are black clothes laying on the bed and lucky for me, they're close to my size. I turn my back toward everyone and trade my red and yellow clothes for the Dauntless black ones. There are some boots resting near the bed and I frown when I realize they're too big.

"Anyone have a bigger pair of boots?" a voice says. "These are too small."

I turn around and see that it's the Candor girl. I should probably learn her name that way I can stop referring to her as the Candor girl.

"Here," I say, handing her the boots.

"Thanks," she says. "I'm Tera, by the way."

"Rori," I say. I turn around to make my way back to my bed. I lace up my boots and walk out of the dormitory.

The dining hall is buzzing with life and energy. I search the many tables for empty seats and find a couple next to Four. I make my way toward him and sit a seat down from him. He turns his head toward me but doesn't say anything, so I guess it's okay for me to sit here.

"Mind if I sit here?" a voice says. I glance up to see a boy in all black with curly brown hair and gray eyes. I shake my head and he plops into the seat beside me. He extends his hand and says, "I'm Raiden. Dauntless born."

"Rori," I say, shaking his hand. "Amity transfer."

"Yeah, I figured that," he says with a nod. "Your hair and skin screams Amity."

My skin is tan and my face is dotted with freckles. Working in the fields from dawn till dusk is to blame for that. And my hair is light blonde and my eyes are blue.

I nod and he starts piling food onto his plate. I grab a bun and put a hamburger patty on it. I watch him grab a bottle labeled ketchup and apply it to his patty. He picks it up and takes a bite. I grab the bottle he used and do the same with my burger. I take a bite and my eyes widen. It is actually pretty good.

"What, have you never had a burger before?" Raiden says, smirking down at me.

"Oh, I have," I say, wiping my face with a napkin. "Just not very often."

"The Amity eat like the Abnegation do, huh?"

"I don't think so," I say. "We can eat more portions and we have a bigger variety. We just never ate meat very much. It was more grains, vegetables, and fruits."

"Oh, I see," he says with a nod. "Well, you're in luck. There is almost always meat served, so you can eat all the meat you have missed out on."

"Sounds good."

"Also, when you get the chance, you need to try the cake," he says, with pure adoration in his eyes. "It is to die for."

"You sound like you're in love with the cake," I say with a chuckle.

"Just wait until you try it," he says with a smirk. "You will too."

"Note to self: try the cake."

"Good girl."

After we finish eating, he stands to dump his tray and I do the same. We stack our trays on a pile of dirty ones and make our way to the door.

"See you tomorrow," he says with a wink. "Good luck at training."

"Thanks," I say, walking in the direction of the dormitory. "I have a feeling I will definitely need it."

Loud noises wake me from my sleep. I peek my eyes open to see Four hitting a pot and a pan together.

"All right, initiates," he says, his loud voice echoing throughout the room. "Training starts in an hour. Get some breakfast and then head to the training room. I suggest you not be late."

After he leaves, I stretch my arms and legs before sitting up. I rummage through the trunk at the end of my bed and find a black shirt, black pants, and some black socks. I change with my back toward everyone and then sit on the edge of the bed. I put on the fresh pair of socks and then lace on my boots.

"Hey," a voice says. It's Tera, the Candor girl. "I thought we could walk together."

I shrug my shoulders and we walk out of the dormitory. The dining hall is busier than I expected. People are either getting back from work or on their way to work.

I sit at the same table I did yesterday and Tera sits next to me. Chocolate chip muffins are laid out on the table before us and I grab one.

"These are so good," I say after taking a bite. "Remind me to thank the lunch staff."

She giggles and nods her head. "They are good. Even better than the ones from home."

I glance up and see the other transfers piling into the room.

"It's twenty till eight," I say after glancing up at the clock. "We should probably head toward the training room."

I grab two small cups and pour some ice water into them and hand one to Tera.

"You're right," she says. We down our waters and then head toward the main doors, throwing our trash away on the way out.

When we get to the training room, Four and Eric are having what looks like an intense conversation. The door slams shut and their eyes snap up to us.

"We're, uh, here for training...sir," Tera says, obviously shaken up by Eric's presence in the room. I don't know if it's his attractiveness or because he's intimidating. Probably both.

"Good," Four says. "Take a seat and wait for the others to get here."

I look around but there aren't any chairs, so I decide to sit and lean against the wall. Tera follows me and we sit quietly and look around the room. To the left are multiple punching bags lined up, and in the center of the room is a cement elevated block, which is probably for fighting.

"You think he's going to stay in here while we train?" Tera says lowly, her eyes locked on Eric. "Four is intimidating enough. I don't need him in here too."

"I have no idea," I say, my eyes raking over Eric. He looks even better than he did yesterday. He is wearing a black jacket instead of a vest, though his muscles still show through the vest, and black pants and boots. His blond hair is loosely styled back and his face looks clean shaven. I catch his eye and he raises a brow, and instead of looking away, I arch my brow. I mean, there's no sense in pretending I wasn't checking him out; it was obvious. He smirks and breaks eye contact when Four says something to him.

The door to the training room bursts open and the other five transfers pile in. Eric checks his wrist watch and shakes his head.

"Late on the first day of training," Eric says, his voice loud and his face serious. "They should be taught a lesson, right Four?"

"What do you have in mind?" Four looks disinterested but answers anyway.

"I would hang them over the chasm," Eric says, a menacing smile on his face. "But I don't feel like having to pull them out."

"Have them run laps?"

"Yeah, that'll have to do," Eric says, his face stone cold and his voice low, yet still intimidating. "You five are going to run around the room, and if you stop before I allow you to, you're Factionless. Now, get to running initiates."

"You two," he says, pointing at us, "on the punching bags, otherwise you'll be running with them."

Tera and I scramble up from our spot on the floor and speed walk to the punching bags. I curl my hand into a fist and punch the bag, barely making it move.

"You're doing it wrong," says a voice from behind me. I look behind me to see Eric, a blank expression on his face. He puts his hand on my stomach and says, "Keep pressure here. Tighten your upper arm and put your whole body into your punch."

He lets go of me and backs away, gesturing for me to continue. I pull my fist back and use my body to put more force into my punch. The bag swings back a little bit and I smile.

"Good," he says with a nod. "Keep it up."

"Who told you to stop?" Eric says, walking away from me. He towers over one of the Erudite transfers who has her hands on her hips, trying to catch her breath. I think her name is Jillian.

"Nobody," she says, her voice low. "My legs hurt and I'm tired. I can't run any more."

"Oh, you can't?" Eric says, a smirk forming on his face. "Well, all right."

"Eric, what's that look for?" Four says, quirking his eyebrow.

Eric calls all of us over to him and I can't help but feel nervous. The look on his face tells me that whatever is on his mind must not be good.

"Initiates, follow me." We follow Eric out of the training room and Tera throws me a confused look and I shrug. When I hear the sound of rushing water, the blood seems to drain from my body.

"You," Eric says, pointing at Jillian. "Come here."

She hesitantly walks toward him to where he's standing in the middle of the bridge above the chasm. When she reaches him he pushes her off the side of the bridge without a railing, causing her to scream. He releases her hands and she hangs on to the edge of the bridge so tight her hands turn white.

"Four, set a timer for two minutes," Eric says, staring down at Jillian. "If you can hold onto for two minutes, I will forget your disobedience. If you can't, well, you know."

A sob escapes her lips and I tremble as her hands start losing their grip on the bar.

"Time," Four says. A couple of the boys rush over to help Jillian up over the edge and I release a breath.

"Let that serve as a reminder not to disobey me," Eric says, his eyes wandering over every one of us. "If I tell you to do something, you better do it. I am not someone you want to mess with."
