《just pretend》.26

Time flies quickly and in no time it's Halloween.

Mia invited me to hangout with the others but in all honesty, things would just be awkward. I haven't talked to Leo since my competition in September. I don't see him around Keanu's home. It's just like I travelled back in time to last year when I vaguely knew she had a brother. It's like summer didn't happen. As much as that upsets me, I have to cut him out of my life.

"We need to be going now," Keanu says as I take my time texting Julian asking if he's arrived yet.

I'm currently sat in my car, parked down the road from Aleks' Mansion.

"Could you choose a more basic costume?" I say looking up to her. You guessed it, she's a cat.

"At least I tried. You have dollarama fangs in and that's it," she snaps back.

"Let's go," I sigh.

We get out of the car and walk to the mansion blaring music. Luckily the lots on this street are spaced out enough neighbours won't be annoyed.

Currently, Aleks' parents are at my house along with Keanu's, Julian's and some other people. All the kids at my school are pretty tight, it's a small school. All our parents are pretty close too.

"Fuck, I've been wearing these heels like twenty minutes and already they're giving me a blister."

"Then why did you wear heels?"

"To look nice! Gosh you dimwit. Why do I wear makeup? Because that isn't any fun for me either."

I groan. "You on your period or something?"

"One, no. Two, fuck you."

I already need a drink.

We show up at the front door and walk in. I ditch Keanu as quick as possible when I see Julian holding a beer.

"Hey, you never texted me back," I say.

"If I was on my phone at a party, that's a sign that this place is fucking boring." He already sounds tipsy.

"Don't tell me you're a baseball player," I say referring to his costume. He's just wearing his baseball clothes.

"I am."

"Well, I know you are. You're wearing your baseball clothes."

"And what are you?"

I show my teeth. "A cheap slash lazy vampire," I say.

"Good. Wow seems like you enjoy this holiday."

"I enjoy the excuse to drink. Where the hell is the the alcohol?"

"Woah calm down." He laughs. "I'm not sure. Aleks handed this to me and went upstairs with someone I didn't see who." He may be an asshole but assuming him and Liv are a thing, he wouldn't see anyone else.

"Blonde?"

"Yeah. She was wearing a tutu and I think a top at one point but just a pink bra."

"That sounds like Liv."

"You think?"

"Duh you idiot," I say. I sigh thinking of how much I miss all them.

I leave Julian to the other room where some friends of mine are.

"Aye! Andrew!" Mathew calls. He looks ridiculous in a banana costume.

"What the hell are you wearing?"

"I lost a bet to Sean," he says.

I laugh a bit. "Damn. In that case this is boring. You should be a princess or something."

"Yeah okay, if I still see you by next halloween, we'll bet on it."

"Okay," I laugh. He's too drunk. He won't even remember by tomorrow. "Where's the alcohol?"

"Sean brought a bunch of bottles but people are helping themselves. Hurry up."

I make my way to the kitchen and grab a half full bottle of smirnof. No cups are to be found except used ones that have fallen on the floor so I just take the bottle and head outside.

Outside, zombies, football players and apparently a panda, are playing football in the dark. The pool is empty but it's too cold for anyone to go in.

"Listen— listen. If you jump in... I'll— I'll jump off the roof," a very drunk boy slurs to a girl. A girl I quickly recognize as Mia and the voice to be Leo.

I quickly chug some of the bottle.

"Okay!" The Mia laughs and she pulls off her shirt.

"Jesus," I say going over to them. "It's fucking freezing."

They both look to me and stare. Both drunk, Leo might actually be high, his eyes are red as hell.

"So?" Mia says. "Where the fuck you been?"

"Fucking my sister," Leo laughs.

"Been busy with school— but no you can't jump off a roof."

"Oh fuck off," he says. "Mia, no need to go in, I'm doing it anyway."

One thing about Leo, if someone he's angry at tells him to do or don't do something, he'll do the opposite.

"No, no you're not," I say following him.

"How the hell do I get to the roof? Oh window!" He says muttering to himself. I follow him as he walks through the house to the stairs.

"Leo come on. Don't be fucking stupid," I say following him.

"You're really annoying. Would you mind leaving me alone?" He says.

"No. I'm not going to let you jump off the roof into the pool."

"C'mon. We did it in the summer," he laughs. I frown. "I beat you to the top of the cliff and we jumped. What's different about this?"

I drink the rest of the bottle before throwing it to the floor, hoping it'll make this decision seem less stupid.

"Fine. I'll jump with you," I say. I don't know what this will accomplish but at least I won't have to watch him do something stupid.

He walks into a dark room and towards the window. He doesn't flick on the light, I don't think to either.

"No. Okay," I shut the door behind me. "Please Leo can you just use your brain for once and not do something dumb."

"Why is everyone always saying that?" He mutters as he tries to figure the window out.

"Because people fucking care about you."

"Do they though," he snaps. He turns around. "My parents gave up, my sister, teachers, somewhere you did too."

I stay quiet.

"Leo I'm sorry."

He turns around and finally gets the window open.

"You may be angry at me but I don't give a shit. You're not jumping into a freezing pool that is no where even near to the house, drunk."

"You can't stop me." He laughs, already one leg out the window.

I fucking hate this kid.

I walk over to the window and hold his arm. "I. Said. No."

"Go bother my sister," he groans trying to break lose. He try's to pull from my grasp till I'm worried he's going to break free and fall so I in one swift motion just pull him forward till he falls on me.

"Fucking hell," I groan.

"Why'd you do that? And you call me the idiot."

"Your breath smells like alcohol."

"So does yours. What's your point?"

He rolls off of me and sits cross legged on the ground. I, too, sit up.

"Can you just promise me you won't do that again," I say exhausted. He's like a child when he's drunk and determined.

"Yeah," he says. And I sigh a relief and lean back against the wall. "If you kiss me."

I look up at him.

The little prick is smirking.

"Is this a bribe?" I snort. The alcohol from earlier lightens my mood a bit.

"Maybe," he says crawling closer. "C'mon, please." He places his hand on my jaw.

Of course I give in and lean forward. I don't even think about the god damn window.

He leans on me and presses me to the wall. He's basically sitting on my legs.

He moves away and holds eye contact. "You're no good," I say close to his face.

"I know," he replies.

He leans his head on my shoulder and relaxes. "I don't like you not talking to me," he says. His voice cracks quietly.

"I know. I'm an ass," I say. Drunk Leo is way more emotional then he would ever like to admit.

"Are you going to ignore me again?"

"No. No, I won't do that again."

"Promise?"

"Yes. I promise."

He's quiet for a bit.

"Are you just gonna sleep?" I laugh quietly. I feel him nod his head. "You drank too much." He nods his head again.

I frown to myself knowing he never gets attention. Nobody ever hugs him, says that they love him, that he matters to them.

The more he lays in my arms the more I hate myself for ignoring him.

I was just another person to leave him.
