《Hidden Riches》Chapter 39

I had a bad feeling in my chest. Something was wrong, but I didn't know what it was.

Today, Logan and I were interrupted about five times today from Bethany. She came in to ask questions about the business meetings that were coming up. Instead of asking Tim, she asked Logan. This was strange. This woman was driving me crazy. What did she want?

"Sorry to interrupt again," Bethany said, bursting through the door. "Logan, could you help me with something really quick? I need to know how many people will be at the next meeting with Mr. Pik."

Logan sighed. "Can't you ask Tim? Besides, you're his PA."

"I know, but this is confusing. Could you help me please?"

Frustrated I asked, "How about I help you, Bethany? I'm going to start training to be a PA soon, so I should get to know what you do all day."

"N- no thanks. I need Logan's help." She shrugged, looking away from me.

DID SHE REALLY JUST SAY THAT?!

"What's the difference?" I asked.

"Experience. Logan has done meetings with Mr. Pik."

"Logan hasn't been a businessman for long, so I'm ten thousand percent sure Tim has more experience than he does. Go on and ask Tim." I said, crossing my arms over my chest.

A deep frown appeared on her face. "Hannah, Tim isn't here."

"Can't you call him or something?"

"He's in an important business meeting."

"What? You're his PA, right? Shouldn't you be with him?"

She didn't say anything after that. She stared at the both of us in silence, still frowning.

"I'll wait until he's done. Have a good night you too," she said through her teeth. She left out the door and slammed it shut behind her.

"Sheesh," Logan said. "Okay, what movie do you want to watch again?"

"Any movie is fine." I hopped up from the couch and locked the door.

"How about we watch a wedding movie?" He said, pulling one from the pile.

"Those movies make me anxious." I skipped into the kitchen and threw a bag of popcorn into the microwave. "We can watch a horror movie. We haven't watched any of those together yet."

"Fine, but feel free to cuddle with me when you get scared." he winked.

"Shut up," I slapped his hard back. "I'm not scared that easily."

"Yeah right. I'll be back down in a second." He slid a movie into the DVD player, then jogged up the stairs.

I stood there, in front of the microwave, watching the time go by. The popcorn began to loudly pop inside.

The house was dead silent, except for the popcorn.

A few minutes passed and he didn't come back down.

What was he doing up there?

A loud thump sounded from upstairs, making my wince.

"Logan!" I yelled, "Are you okay?!"

Silence. Then I realized. He's trying to scare me, isn't he?

"Logan?" I said, going towards the stairs. "Come down here. You're not going to scare me-"

"BOO!" I heard behind me.

I let out a loud piercing scream. "Logan!

I turned to see Logan laughing, bent over on the table. "You're too easy, Bunny!"

"Jerk!" I yelled and slapped his back again.

I did get scared as he predicted. But, instead of cuddling with him as he wanted during the movie, he was my teddy bear to squeeze instead.

The next day, Chase invited me out to lunch. I haven't seen him a few months. I couldn't be happier to see him.

Logan dropped me off at the restaurant down the street. Next to it, was the cafe Jason and his goons came after Logan and I. That place will always be filled with bad memories.

Chase was standing outside, staring down at his watch in anticipation. I'm not late, am I?

I stepped out of the car and ran towards him.

"Hey!" Chase smiled at me. "Long time no see!"

"Chase! Hi!" I said.

I heard a low grumble behind me. I turned and frowned at my fiance. He winked at me.

"Hey there, Python. I haven't seen you in a while. You've gotten better I see." Chase said.

"Yes, I did Chase. I see you're still pursuing Bunny." Logan glared at him.

"What?"

"Logan! He's not pursuing me! Don't say things like that!" I said.

He chuckled. "I was joking. You should've seen your faces. Hilarious."

Jerk.

"I'll pick you up when you're done," Logan said. "Call me."

"I can take her home," Chase said. "I don't mind."

Logan said nothing. He stared at Chase blankly for a moment, then smiled. "Sure," he said. "I expect her back in one piece. Two pieces and you're dead, roadrunner."

"Got it." Chase shivered.

Logan's arm wrapped around my waist from behind. He pulled me toward him and kissed my lips. "Have fun, okay?"

"Yeah. Try and get a lot of work done, okay? I want to have the weekend alone with you." I said.

"Don't worry about that, baby. I love you." He whispered into my ear.

"I love you too," I whispered back, then kissed his cheek.

After that, he got into his car and drove away. I turned to Chase, who was standing behind me awkwardly. "Let's go in," I told him.

"Right behind you."

We walked in and found a table in the corner. As we waited for someone to take our order, we scanned our menus. I was starving. Everything sounded good.

"Hey. May I take your order?" I looked up from my menu to see Beverly in her waitress outfit. She must be working today.

I quickly ducked my hands under the table. I hadn't told her I was engaged yet. She raised her eyebrows at this. "What would you like, Hannah?"

"The cobb salad please."

"And you, loser?" She said, turning to Chase.

"The bread bowl." He gave her a big smile. "Thanks for your service, ma'am."

"Whatever." She rolled her eyes. "I'll be back with your food in ten minutes."

"Thank you," I said.

She smiled at me, then went to the back. Hopefully, she didn't see my ring. When I tell her, Violet and Grace, I wanted it to be special.

"Does she know you're engaged?" Chase said, practically yelling.

The people around us turned and stared.

"Chase! Don't be so loud!" I whispered. "And no. She doesn't."

"Why haven't you told her?"

"Because I want all my girlfriends to be together when I tell them."

"You think they'll be happy for you?"

"I hope so. I've already been disappointed once. I don't want to go through that again." I looked down at my knees, my eyes daring to spill tears. I didn't want to cry though, not in front of Chase.

"Look Hannah, not everyone is gonna agreed with every choice you make. You do you. They're just a bunch of haters. Everybody has some."

My parents = haters? That doesn't seem right. Well, I was forgetting about the Golds. The worst haters I have ever had to deal with. But they're gone now. I don't have to worry about that anymore.

Beverly shook me from my thoughts by placing a plate of cobb salad before me. The food smelled amazing.

"Thanks, Beverly," I said. "The food looks delicious."

"You're very welcome, sweetheart. You know, you never told us how that date between you and Logan went."

"I would, but everyone has been busy. I haven't had time to tell you all."

"Sorry about that. I'm off tomorrow. We could meet them."

"Okay! I'll check in with Violet and Grace. Maybe then we can meet up."

"I hope so! Anyway, I got to get back to work. Enjoy your meal, Hannah." She waved goodbye to me, then went to take someone else's order.

I dug into my salad and began to eat. I looked up to see Chase watching me, blankly. "What?" I asked.

"Nothing." he turned his head away. "Sorry."

As we ate, we talked about the months that passed and what we did during them. Chase was busy looking for work in the sports field. He wanted to be a coach for a track team.

"I haven't had any luck,"

"You'll do fine, Chase. With your skills, you'll get a job soon."

"What about you? Do you plan on getting a job after marriage?"

"Well..." I looked down at my knees once again. "I don't know. I mean-"

"Logan can afford for you to stay home, right?"

"I guess you could put it that way." I pulled a few strands of my hair behind her ear. "No one would want me, anyway."

"You get to stay home. Don't complain." He dipped some of his bread into his tomato soup from his bread bowl. He popped it into his mouth.

"I know, but It'll get boring after a while. I'll be waiting for him to get home from work every day."

"You should have a kid then. That'll keep you preoccupied."

My face quickly turned the color of a tomato. K-kids? Babies? Little Logan's and Hannah's? I never thought about having kids with Logan. Maybe because we haven't had sex yet.

"We haven't talked about having kids yet." I fiddled my thumbs under the table.

"You two are gonna be married soon. Maybe now is the time to discuss babies. Don't tell me you two aren't gonna have sex."

"O-of course we will."

"Sex equals-."

"I know, Chase. I'm twenty-two years old. I know what sex is."

"Yet, you're still a virgin." He laughed halfheartedly.

I sat there, glaring at him. "Wow, Chase. Are you a virgin?"

"I haven't been a virgin since seventh grade."

"What are you, a freak?"

"Hey, don't blame me. Chloe Gold was very charming back then."

I guess the rumor about her having every man at college wrapped around her finger was true. Honestly, I felt bad for him. He lost it to a demon.

Once lunch ended, we split the bill even though he argued. I said goodbye to Beverly, then got into the car with Chase.

As we drove down the highway, I couldn't help but think. Why was Chloe doing all this? Why did she want all the men in the world? She must be upset. Everyone ends up regretting something in their lives. I bet she'll regret way more than I will. After all, she did to me... the bullying. Her sister... kissing Logan. What did they want? I always thought everyone was taught at a very young age that they can't have everything they want. I guess when your parents are millionaires, they can give you everything you want.

But, Logan's not like that. Although his parents were rich, he wasn't pampered. He was rejected and hurt instead. I guess no one is raised the same. Some get the most from their parents. Others get nothing.

I guess I was lucky. My parents loved me but made sure to tell me the world wasn't unicorns and rainbows. I'm grateful for that, but the world still surprises in ways I couldn't imagine.

I love my parents and all they've done for me. Maybe I should talk to them. I want to change their minds about Logan.

As I lay in bed with Logan that night, I told him the truth. He only smiled at me, even though I was crying. "I'm sorry for lying to you, Logan. I just...didn't want you to be disappointed in me." I sobbed

His smile didn't waver one bit. He circled his arms around me and held my head on his chest. "Bunny, I would never be disappointed with you because of your parents. I told you that I expected this, didn't I? How about we go see them this weekend? We're going to get their blessing. And if they still don't like me, we'll keep trying. I know you want them at the wedding, Bunny."

"I do."

"Then let's try hard. I'll get them to like me no matter what, okay?"

"Okay."
