《Hidden Riches》Chapter 38

My hands were shaking. I was sweating. The more I walked forward, the more nervous I got. What am I supposed to tell my parents?

When my parents met Bunny for the first time, I never asked if they liked her or not. They would be happy for me, right?

"Anne..." My father said under his breath as he crashed lips with my mother. I squinted my eyes, disgusted by the image.

They always did this when I had something to say when I was a child. Some things never change.

I cleared my throat. "Mom? Dad? Can we talk?"

As they separated lips, I looked away for that moment, not wanting to see the traces of saliva.

"Logan, as you can see, your mother and I are busy," Reggie said.

"I know, but I have something to tell you that's much more important."

"What would that be?" Anne said. She began to rub her big belly. She was getting bigger every day.

"Can we sit down? Please?" I ask.

They nodded their heads, then sat down at the table with me. They gave each other a look, then turned to me.

"What's going on, Logan? Are you alright? You're not sick, are you?" Anne asked, eyeing me closely.

"No, Mom, I'm not sick. I'm fine. No, better than fine."

She loudly gasped and covered her hands with her mouth. "Oh my god... I can't believe it. It's true."

"What is it, Anne? Is the baby kicking?" Reggie said, placing his hands on my mothers' stomach.

"No, it's not that. Is it true, Logan?!" Anne stood to her feet and quickly came toward me. "Is Hannah really pregnant?!"

My mind went blank. Bunny pregnant? Is she insane?!

"WHAT?! Where did you hear that from, Mom? Bunny's not pregnant! We haven't even had sex yet!"

"I'm disappointed in you, son," Reggie said.

"Reggie! Honey, we just assumed she was pregnant. You've been staring at my stomach all day."

"Mom, it's huge! How could I not look at it?"

"How rude!" She scowled.

"I wasn't saying it to be rude, Mom. I'm just worried that the baby will pop right out when you least expect it."

"Don't worry about that, honey. We're prepared for that. We'll be ready whenever the baby comes." she smiled, then sat down in her chair. She let out a nervous sigh. "So, what do you have to tell us, Logan?"

"It's about Bunny..."

Stop stalling and spit it out!

"Bunny and I have made a bond with the one and only God that we shall fulfill in a few months..."

My parents looked at me as if I had two heads. Of course, they didn't understand what I was saying.

"Bunny and I are engaged." I simply said.

Saying those words made my chest tighten and my face heat up. I knew I was blushing and didn't try to hide it. I was so happy... how could I hide it?

"Engaged?" Anne said. "Engaged?! ENGAGED?!"

"Mom-" She ran into my arms and squeezed me tightly, even though her stomach was in the way.

"I can't believe it! Ahhh! You're getting married!"

"Congratulations, son," Reggie said. "I'm so proud of you."

"Oh my goodness, we must tell you everything about marriage and how amazing it is!" Anne said. "This is wonderful!"

"I'm pretty sure I understand marriage, Mom. I don't need advice."

"Yes, you do! Marriage is so much more than a bond with the gods. It was a bond with your partner and everything they live for."

"Mom-"

"After being married to your father for twenty years, I learned one thing. I learned that being married is all about determination. You have to be determined to be happy. Are you determined to be happy with Hannah, Logan?"

"Of course I am, Mom. I love Bunny more than anything in the entire world."

"You're ready!"

****

The room was dead silent. What I expected wasn't coming true. They weren't happy about the news.

"Engaged? Really?" Miranda said. "Hannah, how is that possible?"

"Logan proposed to me, Mom. I said yes. I thought you'd be happy."

"Honey, why would I be happy? That man is dangerous! You will not get married to a man who had a murderous group after him! They tried to kill you!"

"He is not dangerous!" I yelled at her. "Jason and his goons were sent after him by a jealous bitch-"

"And what did you think she'll do when she finds out you two are engaged?! Huh? Go after you herself?"

"I don't care! I'm not threatened by her, Mom!"

"You're not thinking, honey! You're in danger!"

"You're being unfair, Mom!"

"Stop yelling at your mother, Hannah. Whether you realize it or not, your mother is looking out for your safety."

"Pfft! Whatever!" I stood from my chair. "It's not like I need your approval. I'm getting married whether you like it or not. You don't have to come to the wedding if you don't want too!" I stormed toward the door and swung it open. "I'll see you later."

"Hannah wait!"

I ran out the door and I caught a taxi. I silently cried in the back. I knew this would happen, yet I was so happy to tell them. Because... I wanted them to be happy too.

I paid the taxi, then headed toward the mansion. Logan's car was in the driveway, along with a bright pink car right next to it.

I have never seen a pink car like that before. It definitely didn't belong to Violet. Maybe Grace or Beverly.

I unlocked the front door of the mansion, then stepped inside. I closed the door behind and wiped away the rest of my tears. I can't let him see me sad like this.

"Bunny, is that you?" Logan's voice called out. I could hear his footsteps coming down the stairs. In a few moments, he stood in the doorway, watching me. He had his hands dug into the pockets off his black sweatpants. His muscles were bulging from his black tank top. He was radiant, a huge smile on his face. I guess it went well with his parents.

"Whose car is that outside?" I asked, dropping my purse onto the couch.

"The pink one?"

"Yes."

"Bethany's. She and Tim are upstairs."

Bethany? She doesn't seem like the type of woman who would be obsessed with the color pink.

"Oh," I said, pushing my hair over my face to cover my swollen cheeks. "Do you have to work tonight?"

"No. I get to spend the night with you."

I threw off my jacket and took my shoes off my feet. "Great. How'd it go with your parents?"

"Amazing! They are ecstatic! Mom was a little too happy, but as long as she approves. You?" He said, stepping toward me.

I said nothing. I felt my eyes start to burn and water. Don't cry. He'll find out!

"Well. It went well." I smiled. "They'll come to the wedding."

"Wonderful! I was so worried about what they would say, Bunny. Thank God, they approved!"

"Congratulations!" Bethany yelled, appearing behind Logan. She ran toward me and hugged me tightly. "You're getting married!"

"I guess we won't be able to go to the strip club together anymore, Logan." Tim sighed.

"Strip club?!" I yelled.

"One of our clients is a strip club owner. He insists we go there for business meetings." Logan shrugged.

"It's true. Mario is a very strange man." Bethany said.

"Will you two be staying for dinner?" Logan asked Bethany and Tim.

"Nah," Tim said. "We'll leave you two stress birds alone. Have a good night."

****

That night as I lay in bed with Logan, I felt guilty.

I lied to him. Why? Why couldn't I have just been honest? He expected it, right? He wouldn't have been angry, right?

"Bunny, are you okay? You've been oddly quiet since you got back. Did something happen?" Logan said, trailing kisses on my neck and my collar bone.

"Hm?" I turned my head towards him. "What did you say?"

"N-nevermind. Do you like how my kisses feel? Are they soothing you?"

Soothing the guilt.

I nodded my head. "Yes. Could you continue kissing me, please? It feels good."

"Yes. Always."

I smiled. When we're married... I'll ask for kisses everyday. And he'll give them to me.
