《Hidden Riches》Chapter 30

All I could hear was the sound of forks hitting the plate after every bite was taken. I wanted to leave, but I couldn't. This would be the first time I've had dinner with my parents in over ten years.

"Do you have anything you want to say to your son, Anne? Reggie?" Uncle Lex said, crossing his arms over his chest.

"No, I don't," Reginald said, scooping more mashed potatoes onto his plate.

"Oh come on, Reggie. You have to have something to say. You haven't had dinner with your son in twelve years."

"Please Alex," Reginald said. "Let's not talk about this now."

"Do you have anything to say, Anne?" Uncle Lex turned to my crying mother.

She didn't say anything but continued to cry. She had been crying all day at the comments Uncle Lex had made about her and Reginald.

"Leave her alone, Alex," Reginald said. "She's had a long day."

"Logan's had a hard life without you two. A day and life are two totally different things."

"Pass the mashed potatoes," I said.

Uncle Lex chuckled. My father stared at me in silence. My mother let out a loud sob and continued to wipe away her tears.

I stood up from my chair, a frown painted on my face.

"I'll get it myself." I limped from my chair and down the long table. My father watched me closely as I took the bowl from the table. I went back to my seat and poured myself the food.

"Anne," Reginald placed a hand on her shoulder. "Please eat something."

"No," she sniffled. "I'm too upset."

The longer I sat here with my parents, the more I realized how much I was missing Bunny. If she was here with me, I would have a lot more fun.

"Is something the matter, Logan?" Reginald asked. "You seem upset."

"Yes, something is the matter, father. Thanks for asking." I grumbled.

He let out a loud sigh, then took a drink from his wine glass. The glass was filled with red wine, the color of blood. It was a beautiful color, but I hoped I wouldn't see it anywhere but a wine glass anytime soon.

"Reggie, I need you to tell Logan what you told me." Uncle Lex blurt. "You might as well say it now instead of crying it on your death bed."

My father dropped his fork onto his plate and gave Uncle Lex a look. "Leave," he said. Uncle Lex quickly stood up from the table and pulled my crying mother away with him. In two seconds I was all alone in the room with my father. My horrible, horrible father.

My father looked up at my face and stared at me for a while. He hadn't made eye contact with me all day.

"Son, I have something to tell you. Don't interrupt, don't question, just listen." He said, pulling a handkerchief from his suit pocket.

"Alright," was all I said. I pushed my plate forward signaling Celeste to take it.

What the hell does he have to say to me?

"Anne is pregnant," he stated, tapping away his sweat away with his handkerchief.

My heart skipped a beat. Not in shock, but in fear. Mom's pregnant...

The first question that popped into my head was would that child end up like me? Would my parents abandon him or her too? Would they send the baby away?

"Father-" I started, but he quickly interrupted.

"Logan, I know what you're thinking. We won't abandon the baby. Your mother and I won't make the same mistake again. I regret leaving you every day of my life. And I... I want to spend more time with you. That brings up what I wanted to talk to you about, Logan." He slowly stood from his chair and came toward me. He steps were slow and careful as if he didn't want to damage his new shoes. He reached out and placed a sweaty hand onto my shoulder.

The next few words he said...would change my life forever.

He leaned forward. I looked up into his eyes. They were the color of the sea. "I'd like for you to take your mother's place."

What?!

"Take Mom's place?! What are you talking about?" I yelled at him.

"You mother is my personal assistant, Logan. I would like for you to take her place."

"I can't take her place, Dad! I don't know anything about what you and Mom do! I'm not a businessman!"

"Logan, I will teach you all you need to know. We'll practice and practice until you get it right. You are my son, Logan. You are aware that once I reach sixty I will give you my business. I've told you that many times; even when you were a little boy. Do you know how old I am now?"

"No, I don't. I don't want to know either."

"I am sixty, son."

At that moment, I wanted to pass out. I realized why they had come to see me in the first place. No wonder he and Mom came to see me in the hospital. They didn't care about me. They only cared about the company.

I chuckled to myself. "Wow. This is why you and Mom came to me. You didn't even care I was hurt."

"Logan, that's not true. We heard you were hurt so we came to see you immediately. When I got the phone call, I was having a meeting with Mr. Suko. A partnership with him could've earned our family a billion dollars. I missed that meeting for you, Logan."

I had nothing to say to that. Do he and Mom really care about me after all? Was it really all a mistake?

"Still, I don't want your business."

"Logan please, is there anything I could do to get you to agree to this?"

"No, you can't."

He began to rub his face again in frustration. He grabbed his handkerchief and began to wipe his face with it again. Then he snapped his fingers. "Would Hannah agree to you taking my place?"

Before he could blink I stood up from my chair and grabbed him tightly by his shirt. His eyes went wide in fear. "Don't you dare bring up, Bunny!"

"If she will encourage you to change your mind, then, of course, I'll bring her up." he grabbed my wrist and pulled it away. "By the way, I would love to meet the girl you let move in with you. You seem pretty serious about her, Logan. Yet, I had to be told about her by Celeste. You couldn't tell me of her existence yourself."

"So what?! You won't meet her. She doesn't want to meet you either."

"You told her about your childhood, didn't you? Are looking to marry this girl?! You're telling her everything about you!"

"Shut up! You don't know anything about me or her so stop acting like you do!"

He went silent. A look of sadness came upon his face. He lowered his head then began to fiddle with his tie.

I sighed, then plopped back down into my chair. Something in me wanted to be nicer to him. What was it?

"I'm sorry," I said. "Even after all you've done, you came to see regardless of the reason. I may seem like I don't care about you and Mom but I do. I just wish you and Mom cared about me when I was a kid more."

"We did care, Logan! We just... you weren't planned. We didn't know what to do or how to do it. I was doing such a terrible job that your mother decided to give you away. You have no idea how upset I was with her. She told me you'd be happier with him so I gave up. As long as you were happy I didn't care. By now I've realized we would've been a happier family if you grew up with us. I can't go back and neither can you. That's why I want to be with you now. I want you to work with me and take my company, Logan. Please do this one thing. The rest of your life depends on you accepting this offer from me. I'll help you. I'll get you through the training, but after that, you'll be on your own. I'll have to take care of the baby."

The more he spoke, the more I wanted to work with him. The more I wanted to say yes.

I was born into a family of a businessman. I've known he would ask me this for a while. I had been avoiding it. But...the baby needs both my parents. I wanted the baby to have what I didn't. Then... I thought of the love of my life.

Bunny...What would she think of this? Would she agree to this or would she be angry?

I wanted to laugh at myself. I was seeking her approval.

I'm so whipped.

"Okay, Dad. I-I'll be your new secretary. I'll do for the baby. He or she will need both you and Mom. Yes, I did know you would ask me this for a while. Now that you have I'll give you my answer. Yes."

His face lit up brighter than the sun. His smile reached his eyes. I've never seen him so happy. "Thank you, Logan! Thank you for taking my place!"

"But I have something to tell you first." I stood a few inches before him. "It's important."

"What is it, son? Tell me."

"Cancel tea with the Golds and forget you ever met them!"
