《》Chapter 5: Thinking Out Loud

Genesis sat in her hospital bed alone. She had the television off, sitting in complete silence. She was staring out into space, thinking about everything that has happened in her life. Her deepest, darkest secrets played in her mind. She hated that about herself. She couldn't sit in peace. Every time it was quiet, she would remember.

She thought back to the start of it all. Why she is who she is now. What happened that brought her here and not Bella. She was protective. She knows that. Bella knows that. The Cullen's know that. She's protective of everyone around her. She's hates conflict with others. She hates seeing others hurt. She knows she can't save everyone, but she vowed to herself, ever since that day, she would protect as many people as she can.

Her thinking was cut off by the hospital door opening and Carlisle stepping in. Genesis kept her eyes on the wall, trying to not make it obvious that his very presence catches her eyes every time he walks into the room. Carlisle walked over to her, secretly scanning her for anything wrong. He noticed her thinking face, and took his chance to learn more about her.

"You do know it's twelve in the morning, right?" He asked, smiling lightly when she let out a small laugh. "I'm just, stuck in my thoughts." She confessed. Carlisle studied her face, wondering what could be bothering her. "Would you like to talk about it?" He asked, hoping she'd let him in. She paused for a moment and smiled a little, finally looking at him.

"Can I trust you?" She asked softly, looking into his eyes to try and read him. He smiled and stared right back at her, determined to get to know her. "Of course." He confirmed. Genesis stared at him a bit longer before motioning him to pull up a chair. "I believe you." She smiled.

Smiling back, he pulled a chair next to her bed and sat down, readying himself for what she was about to unfold. She sighed, looking back to the wall as if it would reveal her memories for her.

"Eight years ago, when I was ten, something happened to me that changed my life." She started, taking in a shaky breath. She felt a cold hand grab hers, and she looked to Carlisle, who nodded his head, silently telling her that her was listening. "I made a mistake of sneaking out of my home one night. I had just turned ten and I thought I was an adult, that I could do anything." She shook her head, remembering her arrogance.

"I went to the store that was a block away from my home. It was around ten pm, and I thought I was cool for going out on my own at night and buying some candy with my own money." She chuckled at the thought. "To anyone else, it would be concerning, yet cute that this little girl looked as if she were taking in the world." She paused, squeezing Carlisle's hand for support as she thought of what had happened next.

"I was being followed," she huffed out, struggling to keep her emotions down. Carlisle visibly stiffened, not sure if he was even able to handle what she was about to say. Calming down, she continued, "A man had been following me for a quite a while. I didn't think anything of it. I was still in my own little world, thinking of how grown up I looked."

She closed her eyes, ready to finally vent, "He grabbed me from behind. I screamed, but he didn't stop. He dragged me into an alleyway, laughing when he figured out I was too weak to fight him back. He did things to me. Disgusting, vile things." A tear slipped from her eye as she continued, "Somebody found me the next morning. A little old lady. Her name was Anne. She used to be a nurse before she retired. She took me to the hospital where they treated me." She sighed, wiping her tears away.

"The hospital was able to fix my flesh wounds. They tried to fix my trauma the best they could, but despite their best efforts, no one could seem to get me to be the same." She smiled slightly, remembering the caring doctors. "I appreciate them for trying. But I knew only time could heal me." She shook her head, pushing her sadness away.

"After that day, I vowed to protect Bella and anyone else I could from the traumas of this world. I don't like seeing people hurt. It's not right. I wish we could all just live in peace." She confessed. "But the world would be less interesting if everyone lived in peace. And honestly, I could use a little abnormal in my life. But I guess that's just human nature talking. We're all terrible creatures at heart." She sighed.

Carlisle thoughts were all over the place. He was sure if Edward were there, he'd somehow give him a headache. He wanted to cry, honestly. But he also wanted to find this guy and kill him, which went against everything he stood for, but he couldn't help it. He hurt her. He scarred her. He traumatized her. It took everything in him to not make her tell him where the guy is so he could rip him apart.

"Where is he now?" He whispered. Genesis knew the look he had. He was angry. He wanted to defend her. "Prison." She answered. "They found his DNA on me. We went to court. He pleaded guilty. He was proud of what he had done. I still remember what he said to me when they took him away." She concluded.

Carlisle squeezed her hand softly. "What did he say?" He asked, trying to control himself from completely going off instinct and killing this man. No. He's no man. He's a monster. "Where ever you are, no matter how much you grow, you will always be nothing." She sighed. "And he was right." She whispered.

Carlisle closed his eyes tightly, trying to find the right words to say without blatantly telling her how perfect she is in his eyes. "You are not nothing." Carlisle startled her. The anger in his voice was evident, but she knew it wasn't against her. "You have a kind heart, a fantastic personality, you're the most caring person I've ever met, you're brave, and you have good intentions." He listed off, catching her off guard. She didn't know she had impacted him so much that he'd have so many nice opinions about her.

"You befriended my family and broke Jasper and Rose out of their shells and made them the happiest I've ever seen them." He continued. "I'm very grateful for your existence. You just don't know." He smiled slightly. He was right. Genesis could never know just how grateful he is for her.

Tears fell from her eyes as she smiled at him. "Thank you Carlisle. I'm grateful for you too." The two looked at each other, just enjoying each other's presence. Genesis yawned, making Carlisle chuckle lightly. She giggled, "Don't laugh at me. It's one in the morning." She laughed. He shook his head and gave her hand one last squeeze before standing up.

"You should get some rest. You leave tomorrow morning." He smiled. "Goodnight Genesis." He said. "Goodnight Carlisle." She replied. Carlisle gave the girl one last smile before he turned to leave. He was halfway through the door when she called his name. Turning, he looked at her confused. "Thank you for talking to me. I haven't even told Bella what happened back then. I hope you know that you're now one of my most trusted friends now." She giggled at the last thing she said. "He chuckled and smiled back at her, "It was my pleasure."

He left the girl to sleep, frowning at what he had been told. She didn't deserve this. She didn't deserve what happened to her. She didn't deserve to have to suffer from the memories of what happened. It was then that Carlisle vowed to protect the girl with everything he had. He was willing to die for her, even willing to kill to defend her. She had broken down every moral he had. Of course, he still cared for humans and creatures alike. But if they were to harm her in anyway, all morals were off the table.

He won't let her get hurt anymore. That's a promise.
