《Into the Shadows》Chapter 11: The Church Pt. 1

I followed the boy around as they investigated the inside of the church, filming each and every interaction and dirty joke. I even filmed them when Jake just wandered off into the dark and every spooky thing that happened could be debunked because we could not prove what was him and what was not.

When Jake returned to the altar where we were watching the K-II meter flash like crazy where Sam stood calling out for spirits.

I flinched as I felt something rub on my shin, but ignored it, keeping the camera level and on the boys. It stopped after a few seconds so I didn't worry about it.

I started to worry though, when it began again. I stiffened and my hands began to shake as I continued filming while Sam suggested we take our investigation out to the graveyard.

I felt my breaths grow heavy and my vision blurred. I saw a figure out of the corner of my eyes and I thought it was Colby, but as my vision once again began to clear, I could see that he was standing with Jake, Sam, and Corey in front of me, right where I had the camera pointed. He had not moved from that spot since I started filming the K-II.

I looked away from the boys, to the place I had seen the shadow, searching the the pitch dark for something that may not even be there in the first place. My eyes narrowed and my hands dropped to my sides as I felt something staring back at me.

"Lia?" I saw Sam wave his hand in front of my eyes as I came out of something like a trance.

"What?" My voice came out strained as I looked at him with the same anxiety and guilt rising up like a lump in my throat once again. Sam had told me multiple times that I did not need to worry about the almost smothering him incident, yet I could not help but walk on egg shells around him.

"Are you alright?" he gave me an odd look, "Did you see something?"

"Oh..." I knew they wanted to go to the graveyard and I just needed to suck it up. At least we were leaving the building where whatever was lurking in the dark was hiding, stalking us like prey who did not know well enough to escape while they still had the chance.

"Lia?" Sam grabbed the camera out of my hands as I felt myself begin to sway to some inaudible long lost music.

"I'm not sure what's..." my voice trailed off as I turned, walking a few feet off into the dark to grab the old wooden railing at the front of the altar. I needed something to hang on to before I lost my footing and ate shit on the ancient stone floor.

"Lia, I think you should sit down," Colby grabbed my arm guiding my over to the first row of pews.

As I took the step down off the altar, I felt a wave of pain rush through my body causing me to slip. I came down hard on my left ankle, but Colby caught me under the arms before too much weight crashed down on it.

I tried to stand, but my ankle was killing me with each step. It even gave out on me as I took a seat on the pews.

"Let me see that," Corey shook his head coming over to look at my ankle.

He looked at it as it started to swell and turn red, pressing down on a few spots, asking on a scale of one to ten how much each place hurt.

"Its definitely not broken, probably barely sprained too since Colby caught you, but we should get some ice on it and see how it's going to tomorrow. We might have to make a pit stop at an urgent care." He seemed confident in his diagnosis.

"I take it you've see a few bad ankles before?" I joked.

"Mine and others," he nodded, "Dancing and exploring can be a dangerous business."

"No arguments here," I laughed getting up to hobble over towards the cots.

"The rental lady said there was a first aid kit in the same wardrobe as the key was in." Sam said, coming down off the altar towards the back of the church, handing the K-II and the camera off to Jake on the way.

I saw the red lights flash as the device exchanged hands and felt all the tension return to my shoulders as I took in a sharp breath.

I heard another deep inhale, one that was not my own, in my left ear, but no one was there. The boys were behind me on my right, since I was using the pews to my left as a makeshift crutch.

I froze in my tracks and felt a hand on my right arm, I was not sure who it was, but I shook it off.

"Who is there?" I demanded, yelling into the void of the dark.

"Lia, what are you doing?" I heard the boys say, but I continued to ignore them, shaking them off yet again as they tried to stop me from heading off into the dark down the row of the pew where the noise was coming from.

"Who is there? Show yourself!" I demanded, raising my voice louder, "Do it right now! Don't make me come over there!"

"Guys!" I heard Jake yell. I didn't need to look. I could see a bit of the flashing red light of the K-II reflected on the wall in front of me.

"Show yourself! I command you!" I slammed my hand down on the top of the pew, the harsh sound echoing through the nearly empty room.

"Lia, I don't think this is a good idea." Colby was following me as I proceeded forward.

I could see the redness in the dark as the K-II continued to flash like crazy, back and forth from the first green to the highest red.

"If you won't tell me who you are, I'll make you! What do you want?" I yelled again.

I heard the hiss of an exhaled breath by my ear, quickly turning my head to catch whatever was beside me. I could see the retreat of a figure in the blackness, but not before I felt something push me to the ground.

"Lia?!" I heard the boys yell, but I was already too far into what was going on here.

"Who are you? This is the last time I'll ask!" the room grew dead quiet, with only the creaks of the wood pews and shuffling of my feet as I stood once again.

"...ut..." I heard the breathy voice once again.

"Repeat yourself!" I commanded.

"...OUT..."

"What the fuck?" Corey was genuinely terrified.

"You want us out?" I asked.

"...out..."

"Too bad, we're here all night! Was that you earlier with the rope?"

There was no reply, only knocks along the wood pews and stone walls all around us and after a few seconds they stopped.

"I'll take that as a yes." I huffed in annoyance, "Are you going to keep bothering us all night?"

The knocks started once again.

"Alright! I get it!" I rolled my eyes and headed back off out of the dark towards the center aisle were the boys were waiting.

"What the fuck was that?!" Corey was paler than I'd ever seen him, Colby and Jake just seemed stunned, but there was something off about Sam.

"How did you do that? Why did you make it angry?" Sam seemed upset.

"Angry is the only way for spirits to be. There don't hang around unless they have some sort of negativity left in them. The good ones can move freely, but the bad ones hang around in a space where they're trapped and their only option for moving is to attach themself to something or someone. If you remain in control and show them who is in charge they can't attach themselves unless they're seriously powerful. At least that's was Deacon Mike said and he studied demonology at the Vatican."

"Good to know I guess." Colby shrugged his shoulder looking at everyone.

"Its frustrated because it didn't get what it wanted." I explained and heard a slam off near the altar, "Its just throwing a temper tantrum. I think you should explore the graveyard while it cools down."

"Us? What about you?" Colby asked as the first one to recognize I had not included myself when talking about going to the graveyard.

"Mr. Spirit and I have something to work out and I think it would be better if I did that on my own so he doesn't lash out at you when he's just mad at me."

"How are you so calm about all of this? Everything yesterday scared the crap out of you" I couldn't even tell what Jake was feeling, he looked completely blank.

"I wasn't in control yesterday, but I have everything under control now. Whatever was at the hotel was powerful enough to get to us without even really interacting with us besides being in the bathroom to set off the K-II. We all had headaches because it was trying to attach itself to us. I got so freaked out because it got attached enough to me that it could make me move like that and almost smother Sam. It followed us here because it was attached to me, and that is what we're interacting with right now. It's the butler ghost. I was so freaked out and out of control because I didn't figure most of that out until I said the St. Michael prayer."

"How are you so sure about that?" Sam seemed skeptical.

"The first time I started to feel sick yesterday after we were with the professionals, I ran into a man in a butler uniform in the hall. I didn't realize until much later that he was a ghost, but his accent, word choice, and missing shoes made it so much more obvious when I finally started to piece everything together."

"What are you going to do to it?" Colby obviously did not think this was a good idea.

"First I'm going to try talking again and if it throws another fit I'm going to Angel of God and Eternal Rest it into submission. This might be a haunted decommissioned church, but it still has all the makings of an average church and really just needs to be cleansed for the right kind of spiritual energy to inhabit the place again. "

"And what are you going to do if it retaliates?" Colby looked unsure about leaving me in here alone.

"I'll just St. Michael him again, he really didn't like that the first time. That's why he was so quick to anger this time. He basically lost his entire hold on me after the St. Michael I said earlier. And if that doesn't work, there's always the rosary and anyone who's ever seen a ghost against one of those knows exactly who's going to win that fight."

"You've seen this done before?" Sam asked.

"There was a lot more to my house demon than I mentioned, Sam, just trust me. I know what I'm doing. I never really wanted to dabble in this again, but I'd call this an unavoidable situation. No worries though, I totally got this."

"If you're really sure..." Colby grabbed my arm to help me hobble over to the cots.

I sat down on a random one and stared off into the dark, waving to the boys as they headed out the door, leaving me with only a small flashlight.

I pulled a small and thin notebook out of my jacket pocket and opened it to a page.

"Are you ready, Mr. Butler?"
