《The List》(33)

I was exhausted after a long day of classes, but I promised Alani that I would take her to the concert tonight. The only thing that I was looking forward to was seeing her. That was it.

As I waited for Alani to come out of her dorm, I sighed. I really was drained.

After hearing a knock on my window, I jumped since I was not paying attention and almost falling asleep.

Alani grinned as I unlocked the door. After she got in, she was all smiles.

"What are you so happy about?" I asked.

"The concert."

"What about the concert?" I said before starting to drive.

"I'm going to be seeing famous people in person for the first time. It's exciting."

"Yeah, I guess," I said, rubbing my eyes.

"Are you tired?"

"A little."

"From school work?"

"Yeah."

"I'm a little tired too, but I'm more excited than anything."

"I can tell," I said sluggishly.

"Do you want me to drive?"

"No, it's fine," I said, knowing how much Alani hated driving.

When we got to the arena, I realized that parking was going to be a nightmare. There were so many people trying to park their cars and get into the concert hall.

"There!" Alani said, pointing to a parking spot.

"Good eye," I said before parking the car. We were still pretty far away from the arena, so we walked a while before getting there.

"I think I'm one of the only guys here," I said after we got through security.

"Oh, shush. Stop complaining," Alani said.

"I'm not complaining! I'm stating a fact," I said as Alani rolled her eyes.

After finding our seats, which were near the back, we sat down. The openers were pretty boring since Alani, and I had no clue who they were.

When the real show started, I was reminded of how much I loved concerts. I had only been to a handful, but I remember them feeling like an out-of-body experience each time. The music, lights, streamers, and cheering people made it seem surreal.

I could tell that Alani was enjoying the concert too. She knew the words to most of the songs while I was mumbling along. I still had a good time, though.

"Did you have fun?" I asked as we got into my car at the end of the night.

"Yes, that was amazing! Thank you!"

"You don't have to thank me."

"I know. I want to, though," She grinned as I smiled back.

"Where are Victor and Nelson?" Alani asked as we sat in the stands at our college's football field.

"Nelson is the quarterback, and Victor is the wide receiver. They are numbers 10 and 24."

"I see them!" She said, pointing to some random guy.

"Nope. There," I said, moving her finger so that she was pointing at the right guys.

"I'm not gonna lie. This is pretty boring," She said.

"That's football for you."

I had never been much of a "football guy." I watched it sometimes and knew how it worked, but it didn't interest me like it did others.

By the time that the game was over, I could tell that Alani was super bored.

We met up with Nelson and Victor after they came out of the locker rooms, thoroughly showered. Nadia and Jess also went to the game, so we met up with them too.

"Do you guys want to go to the afterparty at one of the other player's houses?" Victor asked.

"Sure," We all agreed as we headed to our cars.

After getting to the party, we all sat down together in the seating area. Nelson, Victor, Nadia, and Jess all introduced themselves to each other since they had never met while music pumped through the speakers. It was a little hard to hear, but they made it work.

After a few hours of drinks, I took another sip of my beverage, and my arm accidentally knocked down a picture frame on the table next to me.

"Here, I'll get it," Jess said, picking it up.

"I miss the beach," Nadia said when she saw that the picture was of the shore.

"Me too," Nelson said.

"Let's go, then!" Victor slurred.

"Yeah!" Nadia said drunkenly. All of us were drunk and smiling like idiots at the thought of going to the beach.

"Let's buy plane tickets to Florida!" Nelson suggested.

"Okay," We all agreed, pulling out our phones.

After we all picked the same flight, we filled out our information and purchased the tickets for winter break.

"Woohoo!" Alani cheered before we all broke out into happy screams.

When the night was over, we were all forced to take cabs back to our places and pick up our cars the next day.

I drunkenly rode with Alani back to her dorm and then traveled back to my apartment.

As I got under the covers of my bed, I fell asleep.

*****

I woke up the next morning with a text from Alani.

Alani: Want to hang out? ;)

I ignored my pounding headache and was instantly put in a better mood at the thought of seeing Alani.

River: Come over

Alani: Okay

After putting my phone down, I got dressed and ready for the day. I decided to take some medicine with my breakfast because my head was killing me.

Alani arrived as I placed my plate into the sink. I walked over to the door and opened it to find her smiling.

She instantly jumped on me, wrapping her legs around my waist and kissing me.

"Good morning," She said, pulling back from the kiss.

"You're in a good mood for someone who was insanely drunk last night."

"Oh, trust me, my head is hurting like crazy. I'm just happy to see you."

"Do you even remember last night?" I asked.

"Nope. You?"

"Barely anything."

"Did you at least sleep okay?" She asked.

"Like a baby."

"Good."

"What do you want to do?" I said with a smirk.

"I think you know," She said, pouncing on me again as we both laughed and headed toward the bedroom.

"Tell me more about your family," Alani said, tracing circles on my naked chest.

"What about them?"

"Anything."

"Well, I have a mom, dad, and no siblings or pets."

"Were you lonely without siblings? I couldn't imagine my life without Lola."

"A little, I guess."

"Do you wish you had siblings?"

"Yeah."

"Do you wish you had pets?"

"Yeah."

"You're making me sad for you!" Alani giggled. "Did you ever go on vacations when you were younger?"

"All the time," I said before freezing.

Memories from last night came rushing back to me. Crap. We had purchased plane tickets to Florida last night without thinking.

"Alani?"

"What?"

"We bought plane tickets to Florida last night."

"Oh my god. I remember now!" She said after a moment of rubbing her head.

"We need to call and refund them."

"I'll do it," She said, pulling out her phone.

After going to the kitchen to talk to the person on the phone, she returned with a frown.

"They're non-refundable," She said.
