《Stranded》part 26

As the ship pulled into the port,Ant and Dec began to feel surprisingly nervous.
They had no idea how this would go?what if someone had contacted the press? They knew they'd have to face them eventually, but they definitely weren't ready for that just yet.
A knock on the cabin door, startled them out of their individual thoughts.
"Bernie sent me to come and get you" Daniel smiled "you ready boys?"
"As ready as we'll ever be" Ant replied.
"There's two ambulances waiting to take you to hospital" Daniel informed them.
"What?" Ant asked surprised "we don't need ambulances, that's ridiculous"
"Yeah" Daniel smiled "don't think you can do anything about that I'm afraid, just remember what Bernie said...cooperate and the sooner it will be over with and you can be on your merry way"
"Ok" Ant sighed.
Ant and Dec felt strangely overwhelmed as they disembarked from the ship, just the sheer size of the port and the amount of people milling around was weird to them after having been stuck on the island for weeks.
Bernie took over from Daniel and escorted them to the waiting ambulances.
"Well lads" he smiled and held out his hand for them to shake "you two take good care of yourselves ok?and hopefully you won't get yourselves into anymore crazy situations like this"
"Hope not" Dec smiled "and thanks for everything Bernie, you're a lifesaver...literally"
"All in a days work" Bernie laughed, before making his way back to the ship, leaving Ant and Dec in the capable hands of the paramedics.
"We really didn't need an ambulance" Ant frowned "let alone one each"
"I'll be the judge of that shall I?" The paramedic smiled "I'm Bob"
"Medic Bob" Dec giggled at the coincidental name the paramedic shared with the I'm a celebrity medic.
"Ok" Bob stated, nodding at Dec "you're going in that ambulance and you,Mr...?"
"McPartlin" Ant smiled "but please call me Ant"
"Ok,Ant" Bob smiled "you're going in this one with me"
Another paramedic climbed out of the back of the first ambulance to introduce himself.
"Hi" he smiled cheerfully "I'm Gareth, sounds like you guys have had quite a time of it?you ready to get checked out?"
"Yeah" Ant nodded, but Dec stayed silent.
"And how about you sir?" Gareth enquired "you ready?your chariot awaits"
Ant knew something was going on in Decs head, something was bothering him,but what?
"What is it kidda?" Ant encouraged gently.
"Oh,nothing" Dec sighed "I'm being silly, just ignore me"
"Well, then we would be pretty crap at our jobs if we did that wouldn't we?" Bob smiled "if you're worried about something, then please tell us,we might be able to help...are you in pain?"
"No...no pain" Dec quickly assured him "it's just...you know...I feel weird"
"Why?" Ant asked curiously.
"Being separated from you" Dec mumbled quietly, feeling extremely embarrassed.
"What?" Ant asked surprised "what do you mean?Dec,we're going to the same hospital...aren't we?"

He looked at Bob for assurance.
"Yeah,of course you are" Bob confirmed.
"I know I'm being an idiot" Dec sighed "but me and Ant haven't been apart for the best part of three months, the thought of being without him makes me feel extremely anxious"
Dec wrung his hands together nervously.
"It's only about a twenty minute drive to the hospital" Bob informed him "and Gareth will be keeping a close eye on you"
"You can do it Declan" Ant smiled, pulling Dec in for a comforting sideways hug "how much have we been through already eh?this is nothing compared to that"
"I guess" Dec nodded sadly "I'm just being stupid"
"Hey" Bob smiled "there's never anything stupid about the way you feel, they're your feelings and there is no right or wrong"
Bob paused for thought for a moment.
"I tell you what" he said kindly "let me have a word with Gareth and our drivers and see if we can come to some kind of arrangement"
Ant and Dec weren't sure what he meant, but they watched intently as Bob,Gareth and the two other paramedics who would be driving the ambulances, congregated in a huddle to discuss the situation.
Ant and Dec sat on a nearby low wall while they waited, not saying anything, but Ant rubbed his hand firmly up and down Decs back, silently letting him know that he was there for him,as he always was.
"Ok" Bob returned with a big smile on his face "we've agreed you can both travel in the same ambulance"
"Thank you" Dec replied gratefully.
"Just don't tell anyone" Bob winked "as I said,it's only a twenty minute drive and it's not like either of you are at deaths door..."
"Not anymore at least" Ant replied.
Bob leant over towards Dec and whispered in his ear in a fatherly manner.
"And if we do lights and sirens" he beamed "we'll be there in no time at all"
As silly as Dec felt,he appreciated the older mans understanding ways.
"I'm sorry to waste their time" Dec frowned and nodded towards the other ambulance.
"Hey" Bob smiled "don't you worry about that, give it two minutes and they'll be on their way to another call"
Soon Ant and Dec were being driven to the hospital.
Bob was very good at keeping their spirits up,cracking jokes as he did some basic medical checks.
Once at the hospital,Bob handed them over to the waiting staff and said his goodbyes
"Well,it was nice to meet you lads" he smiled "I'll try and pop by later and see how you're doing"
"Thanks Bob" Ant and Dec chimed together.
Ant and Dec were then put through some pretty rigorous tests which they hated, but knew were necessary.
Once the tests were finally completed, they were made comfortable, side by side in a private room.
They were very happy that they were still together and suspected that Bob may have had something to do with that.
They had been told a doctor would come and talk to them as soon as possible to fill them in on everything.

It wasn't long before that doctor arrived.
"Hello gentlemen" he smiled in his strong aussie accent "I'm Dr Anderson"
"Hi" Ant and Dec both replied.
The doctor had a fiddle with one of the drips the boys had been connected to,before sitting down on the edge of Ants bed.
"Now then" he smiled "your tests are looking good...shouldn't have any long term effects or anything like that,so that's really good news"
"Brilliant" Dec smiled "so we'll be able to go home soon then?"
"Not just yet" Dr Anderson replied "we now have to build you up slowly and get you used to eating again so you don't develop refeeding syndrome"
"Develop what?" Ant asked curiously,it was a term he'd never heard of before.
"Refeeding syndrome" the doctor repeated "it's when fluids and electrolytes have shifted due to malnutrition and can be fatal,so we need to keep a close eye on you,it can take up to ten days for things to start to get back to normal"
"TEN DAYS?" Dec shouted in a much louder voice than he had intended.
"I mean ten days?" He whispered sheepishly.
"I'm afraid so" Dr Anderson nodded "but don't worry, once we've got you back to your peak fitness, you'll be free to go"
"I just want to go home" Dec sighed "thought we might be on a plane this time tomorrow"
"That probably wasn't very realistic anyway Declan" Ant pointed out "don't worry,it'll fly by and we'll be home before you know it"
"I guess" Dec replied.
"Oh yeah" the doctor suddenly had a thought "I should tell you that the fire alarms in the hospital are being tested in about an hours time,it'll be pretty loud, but shouldn't go on too long"
"Well,if it does" Dec grinned, looking at the smoke detector on the ceiling "I'll be ripping it down and chucking it down the garbage chute"
"Such a tough guy" Ant laughed.
"Have you two spoken to your loved ones back home yet?" Dr Anderson enquired "maybe do that now before the alarms are tested?"
"Haven't had a chance yet" Dec frowned.
"They won't even know we've been found" Ant said sadly "or that we're safe"
"Well, you'd better call them then" the doctor suggested, nodding towards the telephone placed on a small table between the two beds "and I'll come by to check on you both later"
Ant and Dec thanked him and stared at each other.
"You go first if you like?" Ant smiled.
Dec gratefully picked up the phone receiver and started to dial the code for England, followed by his home landline number, but suddenly hung up before completing the task.
"What's wrong?" Ant asked concerned "why did you hang up?"
"I don't know" Dec replied "I suddenly felt strangely nervous about talking to her"
"About talking to Ali?" Ant asked surprised "your own wife?"
"I know it's stupid and ridiculous" Dec shrugged "but I can't help it"
"No,it's ok,I get it Decs" Ant smiled sympathetically "as far as we know,no one back home knows we've been found,I don't think the press have found out yet and our families may have accepted we weren't coming back long ago"
"You think?" Dec asked concerned.
"Well,I hope not" Ant replied "but it can't have been easy for them, not knowing what happened to us,where we were,if we were dead or alive, they probably needed closure..."
"Whatever that is" Dec cut in.
"It's going to be a shock hearing from us" Ant stated "but you need to try again"
Dec nodded obligingly and started to dial the number.
A sleepy voice answered the call, having obviously been woken up.
"Hello" Ali muttered.
All of a sudden,Dec couldn't speak,not even a simple hi or hello.
The sound of the voice he'd been yearning to hear for three months, tipped him over the edge and all he could do was sob uncontrollably, with the phone receiver to his ear.
"Hello?" Ali repeated, now feeling a lot more alert, there may not have been anyone talking, but she recognised the cry.
"Dec?Dec?" She begged for him to speak "is that you?please say something"
Tears were now streaming down her face on the other side of the world and she also found it hard to verbalise all the thoughts that were racing through her mind as she listened to Decs anguished cries.
Having listened to the exchange between Dec and Ali,or rather the lack of an exchange,Ant carefully got out of his own bed and sat down on Decs, taking the receiver from him.
"Ali" Ant whispered, with tears soon cascading down his cheeks too,but he was still able to talk at least "Ali...we're safe"
"Ant?" Ali just about managed to force the word out.
"It's ok Ali" Ant replied kindly "you don't need to say anything, just know that we're ok,we've been stranded on an island, but we're coming home"
"An island?" Ali sobbed, trying to process what Ant had said "when?"
"Yeah, not for a few days at least" Ant replied "we have to stay in hospital for a while, but it won't be long"
"I'm flying out" Ali informed him, suddenly finding her voice "as soon as possible,I'm sure Anne-Marie will too"
"I haven't spoken to her yet" Ant informed her "haven't spoken to anyone"
"You need to do that" Ali replied "we've all been through hell not knowing what happened to you both"
"Could you do that for me?" Ant pleaded "please call her,I just know I'll be a blubbering wreck just like Dec"
"Yeah,of course" Ali agreed "and I'll call yours and Decs families"
"Thank you" Ant replied appreciatively "I'll pass you back to Dec"
Dec just about managed to force out three words that loosely resembled 'I love you' through his tears that were showing no sign of subsiding, but Ali understood.
"I love you too baby" she whispered tearfully "and I'll be there as soon as I can"
After Dec hung up the phone,he and Ant gave each other a knowing glance, now realising how crazy things were about to get with the press, their families, their recovery and anything else that might be thrown at them.
This was only the beginning!

Demons Don't Lie
Algier, average human and recent convict, has committed the gravest sin of all: demon slaying. His fate? To participate in the Culling, a battle-royale style tournament that’s televised live to the world, where all the worst criminals go to die. As with all tournaments, a prize is on the line. If Algier survives, he can have any wish granted by the Marquises, the new rulers of Earth following the demons’ invasion. However, there’s little hope for survival in a tournament designed to have demons do the work of the executioner, especially for a human. Demons are stronger, faster, wiser, and more talented than the average human, and, despite his crime, Algier is no demon hunter. Mentally defeated before the tournament even begins, Algier is torn between becoming another demon’s points and fighting on in his dead mother’s legacy. But should he choose to fight, there is one advantage that Algier has that can tip the odds in his favour: Demons don’t lie, but humans can. How to read this story Demons Don't Lie is written from the perspective of an unreliable (lying) narrator. There are many inconsistencies within the story which are placed there intentionally. It's up to the reader to decide what is the truth and what is the lie. Promotion Full quality cover image

A collection of short stories I've written over the past few years, the centerpiece being "Solstice" itself: On the Winter Solstice, the wind whispered.
