《Baby of the family》part 114

Once the boys returned from their trip to Ireland,Dec busied himself informing just about everyone he spoke to that he and Ant were actually cousins, before the programme had even been aired,he just couldn't help himself,he was still stunned by the news.
Meanwhile,Ants new house in Wimbledon was ready to be moved into and Anne-Marie and her daughters were just as enthusiastic about the move as Ant was,it would be one happy, loving, family unit.
Ant had finally got the family he'd yearned for for so long.
True the girls weren't his biological daughters, they already had a dad,but Ant knew that by living with them,Anne-Marie,the dogs and being 'uncle' to Isla,he felt complete, probably for the first time in his life.
Dec soon realised this as Ant radiated happiness and Dec was absolutely delighted for him.
Ant was also loving having Isla in his life and had become her Godfather in a discreet ceremony that Dec and Ali had successfully managed to keep secret from the press.
"Yous love your uncle Anty don't you Isla?" Ant grinned as he bounced the giggling baby up and down on his knee one day.
Dec and Ali had invited Ant and Anne-Marie over for sunday lunch,Anne-Maries daughters were spending the weekend with their dad,so this was the perfect way to spend the day.
"Of course she loves you" Dec smiled "why wouldn't she?"
"And I love her" Ant replied in a babyish voice, while pulling the infant close and kissing her soft cheek "don't I Isla?yes I do,yous my special ickle baby girl"
"Oh God" Dec laughed "he's doing that silly baby talk again"
"Sorry" Ant laughed "I can't help myself, she's just so cute and squidgy"
"Yes she is" Dec smiled "unless she's screaming her head off"
"Nah" Ant replied "I don't believe for one minute that my perfect, beautiful, little Godaughter would ever do such a thing"
"That's because you only ever see this side of her" Dec frowned "the happy, smiling, giggling, playful side, believe me,babies can be bloody hard work"
"Is your daddy Mr Gwumpy today Isla" Ant teased "don't you listen to Mr Gwumpy bum"
Dec rolled his eyes as Ant childishly blew a raspberry at him.
"Ok Mr know it all" Dec grinned "if you think you know so much about babies and think it's oh soooooo easy, how about you babysit some time?"
"It will be my pleasure" Ant replied cheerfully "me and Amzie would love to"
"Oh no" Dec stated firmly "not Anne-Marie,just you.Put your money where your mouth is and show us how great you are at childcare"
"Bring it on" Ant replied confidently "and just to make it a bit more interesting,I bet you fifty quid that it will go smoothly"
"Deal" Dec stated "be ready to part with that fifty quid"
Ali and Anne-Marie had been listening to the boys conversation with amusement, they were both curious to see how Ant would manage.
"Ok,when do you want to do it?" Dec asked.
"How about tomorrow?" Ant grinned "we're free all day, let's do it"
"Fine,we'll give the nanny the day off, but,me,Ali and Anne-Marie won't be free" Dec pointed out "we'll be going out for lunch while you babysit, won't we ladies?"
"Absolutely" Ali laughed.
"Definitely" Anne-Marie agreed.
"That's the plan then" Dec smirked "we'll be nice and only stay out for two or three hours rather than the whole day"
"Oh feel free to stay out for the whole day if you want to?" Ant laughed "um...she is being bottle fed isn't she?"

"She is now" Ali smiled "and she's been on solids for a while now,I'll run you through it all tomorrow"
So the next day Ant and Anne-Marie arrived at Dec and Ali's place, with Ant feeling confident that the next few hours would be a piece of cake.
"Here I am" Ant grinned "ready for a few hours of fun with my Goddaughter"
"Good luck with that" Dec laughed.
Ali ran Ant through the list of things that Isla may want or need.
"She's having a nap at the moment, but will probably be awake within the next half an hour" Ali informed him "you'll hear her through the baby monitor, then she'll want her lunch"
Ali opened the fridge and pointed to a small bowl containing some bright orange mush.
"There's some chicken and carrot there" she smiled "that's her favourite and some baby yoghurts there, then she can have that bottle of milk, then she'll probably be happy for a couple of hours afterwards...oh and she'll need a nappy change by then, earlier if she's done a poo"
"I've got this Ali" Ant assured her "you three go and have a nice time and I'll see you later"
"No phoning us" Dec ordered "unless she's ill or injured, otherwise you're on your own"
"Get out of here" Ant laughed.
After Dec,Ali and Anne-Marie had left to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant,Ant settled down to watch a bit of television.
Less that two minutes later,he was startled by a loud shriek coming from the baby monitor.
He looked at his watch and mumbled to himself "come on Isla, you're not supposed to be awake yet"
As the demanding cry got louder,it soon became evident that Isla had absolutely no intention of going back to sleep,so Ant made his way up to her bedroom.
"Hey little one" he smiled into her cot, totally expecting the usual happy, excited welcome that he always got from her,but he was startled when the little girl screamed even louder at the unexpected sight of someone peering down at her when she'd just awoken who wasn't her parents or nanny.
"Ok,ok" Ant hummed gently,as he picked her up "I've got you, let's go downstairs shall we?"
Ant continued to rock Isla as he reached the living room.
"You must be hungry" he told the still crying baby "is that the problem swetheart?"
He took her to the kitchen and attempted to place her in her high chair, but she had no intention of cooperating and stiffened her little body as rigidly as she could.
"Come on Isla" Ant encouraged, now feeling slightly flustered as he tried to manoeuvre her into the chair "help me out here will you?"
Eventually he'd achieved his aim,but it had been a struggle and Isla was still crying.
Ant scratched his head in confusion, she was always so happy when she saw him usually,if he didn't know better,he would have believed that Dec and Isla had conspired together for this mission to fail.
Ant took the bowl of food out of the fridge and showed it to Isla.
"Look Isla" Ant smiled "yummy chicken and carrots, your mam said they're your favourite"
With that,Isla promptly swiped the bowl away with one angry swoop of her little arm and it's contents landed on the floor and Ants feet with a messy splash.
"Oh dear" Ant frowned "that was your lunch, what am I going to give you now?"
He glanced around at the contents of the fridge, ignoring the bright orange gloop on the floor.

"Cheese sandwich?" He grinned
Isla proceeded to scream even louder.
"Ok,I guess that's a no then?" He frowned "Why so angry little one?jeez, you could wake the dead"
Ant called Rocky over from his snooze on the living room sofa.
"Here Rocky" Ant smiled, while pointing to the wasted baby food on the floor "lick that up will ya,save me cleaning it up"
Rocky took one sniff of the mush, turned his nose up and immediately trotted back to the sofa to resume his nap.
"Great, even you're not cooperating" Ant frowned.
"Ok Isla" Ant announced "let's just skip straight to the yogurt then shall we?all babies love yogurts"
Ant sighed with relief as Isla stopped crying for a moment as she tasted the sweet substance on her tongue, but unfortunately for Ant,the peace wasn't to last as she blew an almighty raspberry straight into Ants face, covering him in a shower of baby yogurt and dribble.
"Yuk" he muttered as he wiped the food from his cheeks, forehead and nose with a piece of kitchen towel "thanks for that"
He offered Isla one more mouthful of yogurt which she promptly and deliberately let dribble down her chin before starting to cry again.
"Ok,milk it is then" Ant announced "I bet that will make you happy"
He took the prepared bottle of formula from the fridge and immediately attempted to shove the teet into Islas mouth.
She took one suck and as she felt the cold liquid on her tongue and throat, yelled out even louder than before.
"What?" Ant asked despairingly "I thought that was what you wanted?"
Ant was becoming increasingly desperate,Isla basically hadn't stopped crying since she woke up,she'd refused her chicken and carrots, yogurt and now her milk.
Ant was tempted to phone Dec or Ali,but he'd made a big deal of how easy this would be and he was too stubborn to give in...not just yet anyway, besides,Dec had ordered him not to call unless it was emergency, although Ant was beginning to wonder if a baby who was crying non stop could actually be classed as an emergency.
Ant thought he was so good at childcare, having partly brought Sarha up,but he obviously didn't do that when she had been a young baby,he'd also often helped out with her kids, but not when they were this young, not alone anyway,Sarha or someone else had always been around too,he didn't spend time alone with his niece and nephew until they were much older,so this situation was proving to be a bit of an eye opener.
"Oh,you want it warmed up don't you?" Ant suddenly realised.
He stared at the bottle of milk, then at the microwave "can I heat it up in there?"
He glanced at Isla who was getting increasingly red in the face as her temper tantrum showed no sign of coming to an end.
"Better not" he mumbled to himself, recalling seeing how friends and Sarha had usually used a jug full of boiled water to heat their babies bottles.
After doing so,he took Isla out of her high chair, vowing to come back straight afterwards to clean the mess up from the floor.
As he made himself comfortable on the sofa, with Isla safely tucked into one arm,he raised the bottle to her lips, where she immediately started hungrily wolfing the milk down.
"Oh,thank God for that" Ant sighed in relief as the room fell practically silent, the only sounds to be heard were the baby gulping and Rockys gentle snoring.
Ant watched as his Goddaughter hungrily emptied the bottle, even after all the screaming she'd done,Ant still couldn't help but think how adorable she was at that precise moment.
"That's better isn't it?" He smiled as she finished her milk "now maybe we'll have a happier afternoon"
His heart sank as Islas bottom lip began to quiver, followed by heart wrenching sobbing once again "oh no,what's wrong now?"
He placed the empty bottle down on the coffee table, stood up and paced up and down the living room, holding her to his chest and rocking her gently, maybe she'd go back to sleep,Ant hoped, she must still be tired after waking up earlier than planned
"Come on sweetheart" Ant whispered "I thought we were pals, why are you giving me such a hard time eh?"
He tried desperately to rock her to sleep, but she was having none of it and screamed in his ear as loud as she could.
"Babies" Ant mumbled to himself "who'd have thought they could get so angry?and about what?"
He took a deep breath to try and calm himself down, not that he was angry, never in a million years would he get angry at a child, let alone a baby, but he was flustered and feeling quite useless.
He kind of wished he hadn't taken such a deep breath when an unpleasant smell wafted up his nostrils.
"Ugh,have you farted Rocky?" Ant asked the small dog accusingly.
At that moment,Rocky decided that he'd had enough of the yelling from Isla and took himself upstairs to sleep on Dec and Ali's bed.
"Wish I could do that" Ant mumbled as he watched the small dog exit the room.
The smell was getting stronger and more unpleasant and Ant soon realised that it was coming from Isla and not Rocky.
"I guess I'd better change your nappy then hadn't I?" Ant frowned, really not looking forward to the task that lay ahead.
He placed Isla down on the changing mat that was on the floor in the corner of the room, but Isla who was by now crawling and getting into everything, had no intention of staying there and immediately rolled over and attempted to escape from having her nappy changed.
"Hey,come back" Ant quickly grabbed her and placed her back down on the changing mat, causing her to scream even louder, not that he even thought that would be possible.
After about the fifth attempt to escape,Isla finally admitted defeat and allowed Ant to proceed with the task in hand, although she still managed to flail her arms and legs around as much as she could.
"Oh my God,what have they been feeding you?" Ant grimaced as he removed the nappy, exposing it's full contents.
The almost liquid poo practically covered the whole nappy, front and back and had even seeped onto Islas trousers and t shirt as well as partly covering her legs and back.
"What the hell am I supposed to do here?" Ant frowned as he looked down at the situation in front of him "wasn't even worth you wearing a nappy,it'sjust all leaked out"
Thankfully,Isla had finally stopped crying, but was still letting out the occasional shuddery sob.
Ant pulled out loads of baby wipes from the packet and attempted to clean her up,but only succeeded in spreading the poo down her legs, over her bottom and up her back even more.
"Ugh,I've got shit all over my hands" Ant mumbled.
He got up off of the floor and made his way to the kitchen to wash his hands.
"You stay there now" he ordered "don't move"
Of course even if Isla could have understood the instruction, she was still very unlikely to take any notice of it and promptly rolled over and crawled her poo covered little body towards the cream sofa.
"Hey,I said don't move" Ant called out as he quickly dried his hands and speedily made his way back to the living room to retrieve the baby.
"Oh my God" he exclaimed as he peered down at the unfortunate situation that was unfolding in front of him "Isla, you've got poo all over the sofa"
Could things get any worse?Ant wondered to himself,he'd not actually been at Decs that long and already there was food all over the kitchen floor, poo on the sofa and a very unhappy baby.
He attempted to clean the sofa where Isla had been leaning with baby wipes, but he was horrified when it just left an awful stain.
He stared down at it in disbelief and mumbled to himself "I'll clean that up properly later too"
"Bloody hell Isla" Ant turned his attention back to his Goddaughter, sighing as he picked her up "I think I'm gonna have to give you a bath"
Once the pair were in the bathroom,Ant stared at the shower head, surely that would be quicker wouldn't it?a quick spray down with the shower rather than a bath?works for the dogs when they get mucky after all.
So after getting the shower to a lukewarm temperature,he held Isla under the water with one arm and gently wiped her down with a flannel with the other hand.
"That's better isn't it?" Ant smiled.
Isla seemed to be enjoying the soothing water and had stopped crying,it was a lovely, peaceful moment for the pair, especially Ant.
Once she was clean,Ant wrapped her in a warm fluffy bath towel, this was more like it,he thought, this was what he had wanted from today.Just to bond with his Goddaughter,to cuddle her, play with her and enjoy her company.
Finally it looked like that was about to happen, that was until Ant attempted to get the little girl dressed in her clean clothes.
He couldn't believe the amount of stubbornness that was coming from one tiny baby, she definitely took after her dad on that front,Ant thought to himself. She wriggled constantly and yelled at the top of her lungs once again as he tried to get her into her clean clothes.
Eventually after only managing to dress her in just a nappy and vest,Ant gave up.She'd be fine in just that,he decided,it was a fairly warm day after all.
He glanced at Rocky still fast asleep on the bed as he passed Dec and Ali's bedroom.
"Alright for you" he mumbled.
Isla was still grizzling, but not too loudly now, which was a relief to Ant.
"Let's play shall we?" Ant smiled as he placed her down on the play mat on living room floor and tipped the entire contents of her large toy box out onto the floor.
The loud noise made Isla jump and her little face immediately crumpled and she let out an anguished wail.
"Oh my God Isla" Ant said, while quickly picking her up "I'm so sorry,I didn't mean to scare you"
He rocked her to and fro for a while in an attempt to sooth her,but once again, she was having none of it.
Ant felt awful as she sobbed woefully in his arms and he proceeded to wave just about every toy she possessed at her,but it was hopeless.
She had absolutely no interest in any of them, not her rattle, her cuddly Caterpillar or teddy bear and she was especially upset when Ant started to tinkle with one hand on her little toy piano while singing Mary had a little lamb.
"Ok,no singing" Ant promised her.
He was beginning to wonder if he should now admit defeat and call Dec or Ali,this babysitting lark hadn't turned out at all how he'd expected it to,but as much as he didn't want to admit that he was in over his head,he'd tried just about everything he could think of and it was actually breaking his heart that Isla was so unhappy.
Although he also didn't want to ruin Dec,Ali and Anne-Maries lunch out, they'd been gone a while now,so they'd probably be back soon anyway,so he decided to battle on...for the time being anyway.
It was obvious that Isla had completely worn herself out with all the yelling and crying,so Ant hoped with a bit more rocking and soothing she might finally nod off to sleep.
He got up off the floor and walked up and down slowly and quietly once again, holding the baby close to his chest and gently rubbing her back until she eventually quieted down.
Every few minutes,he'd place himself in front of the large mirror on the wall so he could check Islas reflection to see if she was asleep.
After about twenty five minutes,Islas eyes were finally closed and Ant gently laid down on the sofa with her snoozing soundly on his chest.
"Thank God" he whispered to himself as his eyes also began to close.
"Ant?" Decs voice rang out into the hallway as he,Ali and Anne-Marie arrived home from their lunch.
The three of them stopped in their tracks as they entered the open plan living room and kitchen, observing the sight that greeted them.
"Oh my God" Dec laughed,as he glanced around the room, peering down at the toy covered living room floor, with the soiled nappy that was still sitting on the changing mat, dirty baby wipes strewn everywhere and Islas clothes that she had been wearing when they'd left looking like they had been hastily discarded,he didn't even notice the poo on the side of the sofa.
He then focused his attention on the kitchen where Islas dinner and the upturned bowl were still laying on the floor,as well as opened yogurt pots and spoons all over the table. There was a couple of little paw prints in the mess where Rocky had come and had a sniff.
Dec,Ali and Anne-Marie soon turned their attention to the two people laying peacefully on the sofa, one comfortably on his back with his head on a cushion and the other, tiny person laying on her front, snuggled into his chest, with her face turned to one side.
