《Baby of the family》part 86

"This autobiography is going to be great isn't it?" Dec asked Ant as they jotted down more memories for the forthcoming book.
"I hope so" Ant smiled "we've already got a fair bit written down, things I'd totally forgotten about"
"Yeah,it's strange looking back at everything" Dec replied "we've really had some ups and downs haven't we?"
"Yeah,we have" Ant agreed "we've not got very far with it yet though"
"We've got plenty of time" Dec pointed out "it's only January, they're not planning to publish it till September"
"Just as well" Ant frowned.
The auditions for that years Britain's Got Talent were about to commence and once they did,it would be an extremely busy time for the boys.
They loved it though and were excited about travelling up and down the country to find the real talent that Britain had been hiding.
They put writing their book on hold for a few weeks as they threw themselves into the auditions tour.
They laughed and cried at the various brave people willing to stand in front of the judges. Some were brilliant, some were terrible and some were just average, but Ant and Dec loved the variety and chatting to the acts before they went on stage had now become their favourite part of the process.
It could also be pretty boring as well though.Standing at the side of the stage, having to make conversation with every person they met, some of whom gave very little back.
That was until the day when they had a brief chat with a middle aged, frumpy woman about her nervousness, before she strolled out onto the stage at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow.
Ant and Dec weren't expecting much from her, neither were the judges by the look of things, the eye rolling was already evident as the woman introduced herself as Susan Boyle and attempted some banter which went down like a lead balloon with the judges, although it got a cheer from the audience and a laugh from Ant and Dec.
It seemed everyone, including the audience, just wanted her to get on with it so they could get back to concentrating on the serious contestants.
That was until she opened her mouth.
"I DREAMED A DREAM IN TIMES GONE BY..."
Jaws dropped in amazement all around the auditorium at the perfect, powerful voice coming from the stage.
Ant turned to the camera behind him, totally astonished.
"Yous didn't expect that did ya?did ya?no" he pointed to the people at home as Dec gave a cheeky wink.
As Susans audition came to a close and she was obviously put through to the next round,Ant and Dec decided to take a quick break.
"That woman was amazing wasn't she?" Ant asked Dec happily.
"Oh God,absolutely" Dec replied "wasn't expecting that voice to come out of her"
"Me neither" Ant nodded "she's brilliant,I wouldn't be surprised if she went on to win the whole competition"
"Well, there's still a lot more auditions to go" Dec stated "but you never know"
"She has proved one thing though" Ant frowned.
"What's that?" Dec asked curiously.
"That you should never judge a book by its cover" Ant replied.
"Yeah, that's true" Dec nodded "I feel a little bit guilty about that,I judged her by the way she looked,as I think everyone else did"
"Me too" Ant sighed "I feel so ashamed of myself right now.We had no right to do that and I know people were laughing at her,not with her,she didn't deserve that"
"No,she didn't" Dec sighed "we'll just have to hope she goes far in this competition and she gets some happiness and enjoyment from it"
"Hope so" Ant replied "and Meanwhile,we need to learn to be less judgemental or karma might come back and bite us on the bum"
"Wouldn't want bad karma" Dec laughed "it's quite hard not to be judgemental in a show like this though, that's what it's all about"
"Well,we're not the judges" Ant pointed out "so we have no right to judge anyone, especially about the way they look,it's a talent competition, not a fashion show, how she looked should have been irrelevant"
"Ok,you've made your point Ant" Dec sighed "we'll just have to be extra nice to her from now on"
"And to everyone else" Ant insisted.
"Yes and to everyone else" Dec agreed "you're a nice guy Ant"
"I try to be" Ant smiled "treat people how you would like to be treated, that's what Mam always said"
"That's good advice" Dec nodded.
"Yeah,it is" Ant smiled "not always easy to adhere to though"
"Ah,you don't do a bad job" Dec grinned "considering what a moody bastard you can be"
"Yeah, alright" Ant laughed "let's get back to work shall we?"
The rest of the audition tour was fun,but tiring and the boys were happy when it was wrapped up,knowing the new series of Saturday Night Takeaway would soon be commencing.
"Guess what?" Dec grinned to Ant one Saturday as they were rehearsing for that evenings Saturday Night Takeaway.
"What?" Ant replied curiously.
"I've got a date" Dec announced proudly.
"What?" Ant asked surprised "when?with who?you kept that quiet, you sly dog"
"It's a blind date" Dec smiled "well, kind of"
"Declan" Ant replied "you hate blind dates and what do you mean 'kind of'?"
"Kirsty set us up" Dec beamed, referring to the television presenter Kirsty Gallacher, who had become a good friend of the boys "and I already know who it is"
"Who?" Ant asked curiously.
"Georgie Thompson" Dec stated.
"Oh yeah?" Ant mused "she's that Sky sports presenter isn't she?"
"Yeah" Dec nodded "Kirsty seems to think we'll be a good match,so why not?"
"Why not Indeed" Ant smiled "good for you Decs.So when's the date?"
"Tomorrow night" Dec beamed.
"That soon?" Ant laughed, while giving Dec a brotherly slap on the back "well,I hope it goes well"
"Me too" Dec nodded shyly.
"No more valentines day meals with Ali then?" Ant winked.
"You're jumping the gun a bit there Ant" Dec laughed "but hopefully not"
"Can't wait to hear all about it" Ant smiled "you'd better call me as soon as you get home"
"I will" Dec promised.
True to his word,Dec was on the phone to Ant late the next evening.
"How did it go then?" Ant asked excitedly.
"Really well" Dec stated down the phone line "she's so nice"
"And pretty" Ant teased.
"Yeah and pretty" Dec agreed "and funny too,but do you know what the best thing is?"
"What?" Ant asked.
"The best thing is that I'm actually taller than her" Dec giggled.
"Wow,she's a keeper then" Ant laughed "you won't find many like that"
"Yeah I know" Dec replied playfully "I won't even mind if she wears high heels"
"So you're seeing her again then?" Ant asked, not being able to hide his excitement for his best friend.
"Absolutely" Dec replied "we just clicked,we talked and laughed all evening,it was great"

"Aww,I'm so happy for you Decs" Ant smiled "when's date number two then?"
"Wednesday" Dec replied "we're having lunch together,we both have a pretty hectic schedule at the moment,so we have to fit in what we can, where we can"
"Declan, please don't tell me you're cooking?" Ant laughed.
"No,of course not" Dec replied "but she is"
"Oh,nice" Ant smiled "well,I hope it all goes well and I look forward to meeting her in the not too distant future"
Indeed, the date did go well and it wasn't long before Dec and Georgie officially became an item.
Dec was quickly falling in love with her and the feelings were truly reciprocated and there was the added bonus that Georgie owned a dog.
Dec loved dogs.He would dearly have loved to have one,but his busy schedule just didn't permit it,but having a girlfriend who owned one was definitely the next best thing.
As Saturday Night Takeaway wrapped up for that year,Ant and Dec had a few weeks spare to concentrate on their autobiography before the live auditions of Britain's Got Talent kicked off.
"This is quite therapeutic isn't it?" Dec asked as they sat at Ants kitchen table reminiscing about the past "so much I'd forgotten about"
"Yeah, like our disappointment when PJ and Duncans first single flopped" Ant laughed as they recalled the earlier time in their careers.
"God,yeah" Dec replied "I was devastated"
"Locked yourself in your bedroom didn't ya?" Ant grinned.
"Yeah,I did" Dec winced at the embarrassing memory "but in my defence,I was just a kid, moody little shit I was"
"Now you're just a moody little adult" Ant winked.
They spent ages discussing SM:TV live where they both got extremely emotional,it had been such a happy time in their lives.
"I miss Cat" Dec announced as he wiped a tear away.
"Yeah,me too" Ant nodded "hopefully we'll be able to get together next time she's over"
Cat Deeley had married and settled down with her Irish husband Patrick Kielty in America.Ant and Dec were very happy for her and were delighted that things were going so well in her life, but of course the thousands of miles between them meant they very rarely got together anymore.
"Shall we take a break?" Dec asked "fancy a quick pint?"
"Yeah,good idea" Ant nodded.
They were soon supping back pints of their favourite lager in their local pub where they had become part of the furniture.
They loved this place. All the staff and regular customers knew them by now, so left them alone and respected their privacy.
"There's something on my mind Ant" Dec announced unexpectedly as he peered down at his drink.
"Oh yeah" Ant asked concerned "what's that?"
"Saturday Night Takeaway" Dec stated.
"What about it?" Ant asked confused.
"Don't you think it's become a little...?"
Dec said.
"A little what?" Ant cut in impatiently.
"I don't know" Dec sighed "I just think maybe it's become a little bit stale"
"Really?" Ant replied surprised "why do you think that?"
"I'm not sure" Dec shook his head sadly "I just think it's become a bit...you know...samey.Same sketches week after week, same competitions and all that"
"So what are you saying Declan?" Ant asked "you don't want to do it anymore?"
"That's not exactly what I'm saying" Dec frowned "but I was thinking maybe we could rest it for a while?a year or two maybe?then bring it back bigger and better when the time is right"
"Yeah, that might not be a bad idea" Ant nodded.
"Really?" Dec asked surprised.
"Yeah" Ant smiled "I have actually been having pretty similar thoughts about it"
"Why didn't you say anything?" Dec frowned.
"Because I didn't want to upset you" Ant replied "you always have such a great time every Saturday night"
"And you don't?" Dec asked, feeling slightly hurt.
"Yes,of course I do" Ant assured him "but we're professionals you and me,we'd never let it show to the viewers at home if we weren't a hundred percent happy with things would we?"
"Nah,we wouldn't" Dec agreed "I wish I'd known how you felt though, what happened to you trying to open up to me more?"
"Sorry" Ant replied sheepishly "guess I'm still working on that"
"Doesn't matter now" Dec assured him "so do you think resting the show is the right thing to do?"
"Yeah,I do" Ant nodded "not sure Ali or ITV will agree though"
"Theyll have no choice" Dec pointed out "can hardly make a show without it's star presenters"
"Yeah, good point" Ant laughed "so for now we concentrate on Britain's Got Talent,I'm a celebrity and getting this damn autobiography published?"
"Sounds like a plan" Dec smiled.
The live shows of Britain's Got Talent went down a storm, with the dance group Diversity just beating Susan Boyle to the winning spot.
It didn't matter though, everyone knew with an amazing talent like hers, that she would go on to bigger and better things.
After finally finishing their autobiography,Ant and Decs book was published in September.
They had great fun thinking up some ridiculous titles for it before eventually settling on 'Ooh!What a lovely pair'
It was the perfect name for the book as so many people often used that phrase when referring to Ant and Dec.
The book did extremely well and the boys found it amazing that so many millions of people would be sitting at home with their noses buried in the book, reading all about their lives.
It had been a great year so far and I'm a celebrity was a great success as always.
The boys were happy they didn't have to rush straight into preparations for Saturday Night Takeaway for once, they were completely confident that they'd made the right decision where that was concerned.
The boys went into 2010 excited about the start of another year.
Decs relationship with Georgie had gone from strength to strength and they were completely in love, although Georgie often wondered if Dec loved her dog Rolo more than he loved her.
Dec was totally besotted with the little dachshund and vowed that that would be the breed he would get when he eventually had time for a dog.Dec often joked that Rolo was small and feisty, just like him.
Ant and Lisa had spent the new year in Dubai, the place they loved so much and that had such meaning for them.
"You'll never guess what some kid said to me in Dubai?" Ant grinned one day while they were waiting for the Edinburgh auditions of the new series of Britain's Got Talent to start.
"What?" Dec answered.
"He pointed straight at me and shouted out 'Susan Boyle boy'"
"What?" Dec collapsed into hysterical laughter "Susan Boyle boy?"
"Yep" Ant grinned "I guess it all stems from that one line I said into the camera during her audition"
"I guess it does" Dec giggled, wiping a tear of laughter away from his eye.
"It's become kind of iconic now"
"I don't want to be known as that" Ant frowned "Susan Boyle boy?"
"Looks like you don't have any choice" Dec grinned "thanks for that Ant,it's given me the best laugh"
"Happy to oblige" Ant grinned "well, here we are at Britain's Got Talent 2010,hope we find some more great acts like we did last year"
"Yeah,me too" Dec nodded "can't believe it's been a year since we first met Susan'
"I know" Ant frowned "where does the time go eh?"
"I know,it's flown by" Dec mused "Can't wait to get started though, although I'm not so keen on whatever nonsense Stephen might have up his sleeve for Britain's Got More Talent"
"Don't lie Declan" Ant smiled "you love all those silly games as much as I do"
"Ok,yeah I do" Dec admitted "come on,we've got work to do"
"Oh yeah" Ant replied "we have to go and meet some choir I think.Need to go outside and chat to them, they want to film them all coming off of the coach then the choral director will have a quick word with us"
That was the plan anyway, but neither Ant,Dec or the choral director were prepared for the comical hysterics that were about to follow!
