《Baby of the family》part 35

"How did you sleep Ant?" Dec enquired as he attempted to yawn and stretch himself awake the next morning.
"Not great" Ant replied.
The boys hadn't stayed out for long the previous day. They'd gone for a wander around the west end and stopped off at a pizza restaurant in Leicester square for a quick bite to eat. That meant they still had most of the money left that Eammon had gifted them in case of emergencies.
"Did you hear that couple arguing?" Dec asked,Referring to the shouting and banging around that had come from the room next door in the early hours of the morning.
"Who didn't hear them?" Ant groaned "they could probably be heard back in Newcastle, selfish bastards"
"Yeah" Dec sighed.
The truth was neither of them had managed to get much sleep. What with the slamming of doors, heavy footsteps in the corridor outside, drunks staggering in from their nights out as well as the arguing from their unwelcome neighbours,it had been virtually impossible to catch any shut eye.
"Hate it here" Ant mumbled.
"Yeah me too" Dec replied, loathe to admit it after arguing with his brother so vehemently about the place, but it was bound to become pretty obvious soon anyway "just don't tell Eammon"
"Might as well get up and ready then" Ant suggested "no point in hanging around here any longer than we have to"
"True" Dec agreed "are we gonna brave this breakfast then?"
"Might as well I guess" Ant shrugged "it's included anyway"
After getting showered and dressed, they were sat in the the dining room waiting to be served.
"What can I get you?" Came a familiar, unfriendly voice.
"Sam?" Dec looked up from the very basic menu surprised.
"It's Sue" she retorted, tapping her finger on her name badge.
"So you're the waitress as well as the receptionist?" Ant enquired.
"Yeah and the other half is the chef as well as the manager, now what do you want?" She asked impatiently.
"Full English please" Ant smiled.
"Me too" Dec grinned, having decided he could have some fun with the situation.
As Sue scribbled in her notepad and started to walk away without another word,Dec called out cheekily.
"Thanks Sam"
Sue glanced back with a filthy look aimed at Dec.
"She'll probably spit in your tea now Declan" Ant laughed "you don't want to get on the wrong side of her"
"Well" Dec replied "there's no need for her to be so grumpy all the time is there?I might just bring a little bit of sunshine into her life"
"Ha,of course you will" Ant laughed sarcastically "she really looks like she's enjoying your kind of sunshine"
Dec just shrugged, maybe this would become a challenge...to get Sue to smile before they moved out of the establishment for good.
After finishing their breakfasts, which they had to admit weren't half bad, they were outside waiting for their lift to the recording studio, excited for the day ahead.
Once the driver had dropped them off,Steve came into the lobby to welcome them.
"Anthony,Declan, how are you?" He asked enthusiastically as he held out his hand to shake theirs.
Steve had become particularly fond of the boys during the time he'd spent with them previously and was keen to take them under his wing now that they would be in London for more than just a few days.He felt a sense of responsibility towards these likeable lads.
"Fine, thanks" Ant and Dec replied in perfect synchronicity.

"How are you?" Dec continued.
"I'm good" Steve replied "how's the B&B?"
The boys glanced at each other uncomfortably.
"Not great to be honesty" Ant sighed.
"Oh really?" Steve was slightly taken aback.
"Yeah,it's pretty awful actually" Dec nodded.
"Oh,I'm sorry to hear that boys" Steve replied "but can we talk about this later?the sound engineers are keen to get going"
"Sure" Ant and Dec replied in unison once again, they weren't going to rock the boat just yet, there would be plenty of time for that later.
Once they were in the sound booth, they sang and rapped their hearts out to the songs catchy beat.
"That was great" came a voice from the control room "perfect in fact, very few people lay down a track on the first go,but it sounded pretty amazing from up here"
"Really?" Ant asked while grinning at Dec.
"Yeah really,it was spot on boys" came the voice from above "but we'll do one more take anyway just to be on the safe side, then you can come and have a listen"
"Ready to rhumble?" The sound engineer asked.
"Yes,we're ready to rhumble" Dec replied while rolling his eyes.
After they'd sang the track for the second time, they were invited to go and listen to the finished product.
"So what do you think?" Bobby, one of the sound engineers, asked once the song had come to an end.
"It's great" Dec replied enthusiastically.
"Yeah it is" Ant smiled "I enjoyed singing that and rapping of course"
"I particularly like the fact it's got our names in it,makes me feel rather important" Dec grinned.
"You are important Declan" Steve laughed "especially when you start making lots of money for us"
"We're just objects to you aren't we?" Dec winked.
"You certainly are" Steve replied playfully "objects that will lead our record company straight to the bank"
"And us?" Ant thought out loud.
"And you" Steve nodded "if you play your cards right, you'll lead yourselves straight to the bank too"
"Or sing yourselves there more to the point" Bobby joined in.
"Yeah alright" Dec laughed "we get the picture, you love us as long as we make you guys money"
"That sums it up quite nicely" Bobby grinned "you pay my wages basically"
"Ok,well are we done here for today?" Ant asked.
"Yeah we are" Steve replied "and tomorrow, you'll be coming to the dance studio to meet the choreographer. He's got quite a routine planned for you I believe"
"Come on" Steve ushered them out of the recording studio "let's go for a coffee and you can tell me about this terrible place you're staying at,oh and before I forget, this is for you"
He placed the company credit card into the palm of Ants hand.
"I think you should be responsible for this Ant" he suggested.
Dec tried his best not to look offended at the insinuation that he might be a bit careless with the card, but he managed to bite his tongue even though it annoyed him a little bit.
"So" Steve asked as the trio sat down around a small, circular table at the local coffee shop "what's the problem?"
"It's bloody awful" Dec stated bluntly "mouldy, smelly, noisy and the staff are even worse, they're so rude, did you book it?"
"No I didn't" Steve replied "I'm not sure who did,I'm sorry though,I didn't know"
"It's really bad to breathe in mould you know?" Dec pointed out "the spores can get on your chest, into your lungs, might kill us like"

"Alright Dec" Ant laughed "you little drama queen.I don't think staying there is gonna kill us Steve, but it ain't great"
"Do you want to come and see it?" Dec asked "my brother really didn't want to leave us there yesterday,he was raging, wasn't he Ant?"
"Er,no that's ok" Steve smiled "I believe you, leave it with me,I'll see what I can do,but I think you'll at least have to stay there tonight, then hopefully we can get you moved to somewhere nicer tomorrow. You guys can have the rest of the day off and you'll be picked up tomorrow at eight o'clock sharp"
"Ok,thanks" Ant replied "we don't need a lift now though,we're gonna go and explore the city a bit, gonna get the bus or tube.Declan here is particularly keen to experience the underground for some reason"
"Whatever floats your boat" Steve laughed as he said goodbye to the boys.
Ant and Dec spent the rest of the day wandering around the west end again and treating themselves to a nice meal out with what was left of the money Eammon had given them, deciding that they no longer needed to save the cash for an emergency now they had full use of the complimentary credit card.
The next day the boys were introduced to Laurence, the choreographer at the dance studio.
"Got a hell of a routine lined up for you boys" he announced as he pressed play on the CD player.
As soon as let's get ready to rhumble started blaring out,Ant and Dec watched in dismay as Laurence launched into a lively dance routine to the song.
Once he'd finished,he kept his pose, panting loudly "so that's what you've got to learn, what do you think?"
"Umm...it's certainly lively" Ant observed.
"Needs to be for a song like that" Laurence announced, finally dropping his pose and taking a swig from his water bottle.
"And fast" Dec stated.
"Yep,you ready to get going then?" Laurence enquired "get comfortable and position yourselves in front of the mirror,I'm going to break it down into segments and you need to copy what I do exactly"
"Ok boss" Dec smiled.
After two and a half hours of a pretty intense dance lesson where Dec especially struggled to get to grips with some of the moves,it was time for all three men to take a break.
"I'm not enjoying this as much as I thought I would" Dec whispered as he wiped sweat from his brow while watching Laurence head for the door,Ant and Dec had no idea where he was heading, neither did they care, they were just grateful for a brief intermission "it's bloody hard work and why can't I get that one move right?"
"You'll get there kidda" Ant encouraged " you wanna practice a bit more before Laurence comes back?we can just work on that one move you're having trouble with"
"In a bit" Dec grumbled "got to get my breath back first"
Fifteen minutes later and with still no sign of Laurence returning,Ant and Dec were in front of the huge mirror once again, with Ant keen to help Dec with the parts he was struggling with.
"Like this" Ant said as he demonstrated the lively moves, switching his legs back and forth while flailing his arms around and then lifting one foot up while spinning completely around.
Dec attempted to repeat what Ant had shown him,but just ended up tripping over his own feet, ending up sprawled in a heap on the floor.
"I can't bloody do it" Dec snapped frustrated "looks so simple when you do it"
"Yes you can" Ant retorted "and it is simple, now get up off your arse and try again, you're the one who had irish dancing lessons as a kid,you should have rhythm and coordination better than I do"
"Don't use your arms for Irish dancing" Dec mumbled as Ant held a hand out to help him to his feet.As both men stood side by side, staring at their reflections in the mirror,Ant patted Dec on the back.
"Come on Decs, you've got this" Ant reassured him "watch me in the mirror and copy my every move,I'll do it slowly to start with"
It still took a good few attempts for Dec to finally get the dance down to a fine art.
"Hate this dance" he grumbled.
"No you don't" Ant smiled as Laurence reentered the room "you'll learn to love it,I already do"
"How's it going lads?" Laurence enquired, impressed that they had carried on rehearsing through their break.
"We're getting there" Ant smiled.
"Great, show me what you've got then" the choreographer suggested.
He stood back and gave Ant and Dec the space they needed to demonstrate exactly what they'd learned, pressing the play button on the CD player and carefully observing the boys every move.
"Brilliant, you've got it" he enthused as the song came to an end "you remembered the whole routine, well done"
"Thanks" the boys were pleased with the result, especially Dec as that was the first time he'd done it without stopping,he even had no issues with the tricky steps he'd been struggling with just a few short minutes ago.
"Had a bit of trouble with this move like" Dec stated as he launched into the dance steps that had been bothering him so much "but got there in the end"
"Yeah you did" Laurence observed "but that is only going to be a tiny part of the video,so don't worry about it too much just now"
"A tiny part?" Dec frowned "after all that work I've just put into it?"
"Don't worry Dec" Laurence laughed "I'm sure all your hard work won't be wasted and anyway, you'll need to know it for any live shows you might do.Now you both know the dance, all we need to do is work on your posture and lines and you're ready to rhumble"
Ant and Dec glanced at each other in mock despair, rolling their eyes while both wondering how many times they would hear that reference in every day life in the near future?
It would turn out to be quite alot and not only in the near future, but they would have no idea yet just how much that sentence would come back to haunt them throughout their lives.
"Well, tomorrow you're recording the video" Laurence informed them.
"They don't give you long to learn the dance do they?" Dec frowned "just a day"
"Time is money" Laurence shrugged "better get used to that. Now we've still got a fair bit of time left so we're going to get this dance absolutely perfect, let's get to it"
"Slave driver" Dec muttered under his breath.
"I heard that Declan" Laurence laughed.
"You were supposed to" Dec grinned while sticking his tongue out in a schoolboy like streak of rebellion.
As the day came to a close, the boys were very content with the final result. They couldn't wait to get started on the video the next day and to put all the moves they'd learned today into action
They both went to bed that night fantasising about one thing, the one sentence they desperately wanted to hear, the one sentence that would make all this hard slog worth it,the one sentence that they were sure would be welcomed in the not too distant future, the one sentence that they wanted to hear uttered by a radio one DJ,any radio one DJ.
After discussing exactly how amazing it would be,they both closed their eyes and imagined how sweet that sentence would sound.
"And now, live on Top of the pops with their brand new single, let's get ready to rhumble,it's PJ and Duncan!"
