《WOLF CHASE》[4] New Friend

"C'mon, lets go." Emma murmured, pulling on her arm. "We wouldn't want them to see us staring and think we're feens or something."

Massie laughed, shaking her head thoughtlessly. "Pshh! Why not? I could care less." As if hearing her words, Sebastian's head snapped at her direction, and the moment he did, so did that of the rest of the boys'. Massie gave Emma a sideways glance, "Besides, I think they know we're staring at them already."

"Crap. What do we do now?" She panicked, her voice rising to a higher octave. Massie shook her head at her over-reactive behavior.

"Just wave and look pretty." Massie answered, giving them a nice smile and a cute wave. Emma nervously followed after her, however her smile was lined with worry.

And that's when Massie felt it, the aura that surrounded these people. Sure they were good looking, and obviously people had a liking to them, but there was that strange feeling when you were close to them.

Noah—the buff one—waved back, whereas the others just stared at them with a calculating gaze. Massie instantly noticed they weren't paying attention to Emma, but at her. Was her hair messed up? Was her zipper open? She was just about to ask them when Emma harshly pulled her away and took her to who-knows-where; all Massie knew was that the hall was not familiar.

"Oh gosh, how embarrassing, they probably think we're obsessed!" Emma droned, biting her lip so hard Massie winced, expecting blood to squirt from them at any given moment.

"Relax honey, we didn't murder anyone. What are you so worried about? You look like you're about to have a heart-attack." Massie combed her fingers through her hair to fix any unstable strands—that is, if there were any.

"Nothing, nothing. It's just. . . that was the most communication I've ever had with that group in my entire life." Her brown eyes were wide as she toyed with a paper in her hand endlessly.

"Really?" Massie eyed her cynically.

"Yeah," she admitted. "I mean, they're not mean or anything. Something about them though. . . it's weird." Emma shivered.

"Ehh, I get what you mean. Something about them is a bit odd, but I like it." Massie's eyes shined with wonder. "It's exactly what I came here for. The first thing I'm gonna do is figure them out, see what they're hiding."

Emma giggled, giving Massie an amused smile. "Your mind is a little too active. Sure there's something odd about them, but that doesn't mean they're hiding something from the world. It just comes with their package."

Massie was about to oppose, however, something in Emma's smile seemed cautioned, as if it was something she's told herself for a long time to feel secure. Noticing this, Massie simply nodded, as if everything Emma said made absolute sense to her. She wasn't going to disturb Emma's ignorance. After all, ignorance is bliss, and this meant she got the Cult Boys all to herself.

How selfish. How Massie.

"Independence," said Massie's shapeless English teacher Mrs. Ferguson. "What do you think when I say this word?"

"Crap." Massie murmured when her paper fell flat on her desk. She'd been trying to make the paper stand alone with it's thin edge for over ten minutes, and so far her efforts have been put to waste.

"Please, not too many people," said Mrs. Ferguson sarcastically when she saw no hands rise. "Let's go! What do you think when I say the word independent, or independence?"

Massie raised her hand, abandoning the blank paper as a means for entertainment. Mrs. Ferguson was starting to look aggravated anyway.

"Yes, Miss Wilton?"

"Living alone in a house," she answered.

"Good." The teacher nodded with approval. "Anyone else?"

A person answering the question seemed all the motivation the entire class needed to give out some propositions of their own. There were 'paying for your own expenses' and 'not depending on anyone else' answers. Hearing all these responses made Massie gag with all the responsibility, but it was also kind of refreshing. All that independence jazz sounded so empowering.

Actually, she pictured herself being all independent-like and she looked pretty hot. Like a superhero in one of those television shows. She wouldn't have a limited amount of cash to use, and she could buy more cute clothes. Not to mention she wouldn't have to cancel any plans to babysit Lydia anymore. Why when she can hire a babysitter?!

Massie sat back and thought about a way to get cash. And sadly, the only way to receive it was a job. Massie's shoulders drooped. Work— definitely not her bravado.

The periods came and went. To her luck, she shared quite a few of them with the Cult boys. By the time lunch came she had already met countless people, but their faces were still vague as well as their personality. They all seemed sweet, but she knew she didn't really know them.

Emma was the only person Massie considered a friend. Only a day and it felt as if she's known her for weeks. Emma was definitely no best-friend material, but she'd be passed off as her closest friend in the entire school.

"You're lying!" cried Massie, slapping her hands down on the lunch table with her mouth agape, truly amazed. "A hunk like that has only dated one girl from this entire school?" She could feel a giggle rising from her throat as she gave a brief glance at Sebastian from the corner of her eye.

He was sitting at a table with the Cult Boys, Keisha beside him. They made quite a pack. The way they created a circle made them seem uninviting to anyone who may think to sit with them, not to mention the low tones they spoke in. Why all the privacy? Geez.

"I know, you'd think he'd get as many girls as he can." replied Lucy, an overly thin red-head. She looked so fragile Massie expected her to break if she did as much as pick up a milk carton. "And even then, people didn't consider them truly dating. They never acted like a couple. Keisha probably lied to get girls off him, even she can't deny an attraction to the dude."

Massie glanced back at Sebastian, only to see he wasn't there. Instead he was by the garbage can throwing out his empty tray. Ahh, a big eater, Massie liked them that way. She excused herself from the table and stood to throw out her tray as well, only when she got there he walked out the cafeteria doors. Massie foolishly followed after him, not knowing what got into her.

When she got into the halls, he was no where to be found. Making a sharp right she was met with a hard wall. Only it wasn't really a wall, but a person. His imposing figure towered over her, creating a shadow against her puny form. His golden eyes assessed her with irritation.

"Hey," Massie greeted. What was her plan again? Oh... that's right, she had none. In her defense no one should be as angry as he looked. If this irritated him, she could only imagine why he's only dated one chick, he was way too grumpy!

"Yes." He asked, but it felt as if it were a threat instead of a question. His this-better-be-worth-my-time look made her remember what Lydia often said: 'think before say, Massie'. But she messed this up anyway, so what more could she do?

"Do you know where the library is?" She blurted innocently, smiling.

"Not here." He bit. He assessed her, but it was methodical, holding no admiration of any kind. "Girl, do you have good vision?"

Massie stepped back, confused as to why he would ask such a thing. "Yes, of course."

"See to it that you never bump into me again." After saying these words, he stalked away, leaving her alone in the hallway.

Massie huffed, "so freaking stupid," she whispered, dissatisfied with her situation.

The moment the words flew from her lips his attention was suddenly directed towards her, and the expression on his face was anything but happy.

"Say again?" His tone was warning, but it gave her his attention, and that's all she had been looking for, but definitely not like this. She had to admit this situation did not turn out as nicely as she assumed it would.

"I-I," Massie stuttered, freaked out by the fierce glare aimed her way. How in the world had he heard her say that anyway?

"Seb!" Uttered a voice, saving her. "We're ready, we can go now."

Sebastian disregarded her in exchange for acknowledging his friend. He nodded slightly before continuing on his path to who knows where, but it did look suspiciously like the school exit.

Her savior turned out to be Noah, the buff one. "Don't mind Seb, he's like that with everyone."

Massie shrugged "I'll put it off as the start of a good relationship," she joked. Noah smiled warmly before following his friend.

Massie crossed her arms, wondering why Sebastian had to be so good looking and mean at the same time. Even so, she was determined to make him hers, or at least one of the boys from the group. He was a challenge she wanted to crack.

Massie Wilton? Oh she's the first girl in the entire school to date Sebastian.

Yeah, she really liked the sound of that.
