Short Story (9)
You and I. We are in a relationship. But why does it feel like I don't suit you? Why do I feel like you and I can't be together?
Everywhere I go, everyone looks at me like I don't deserve you. Like they should be the one together with you. Like you made a mistake choosing me.
I guess I should have known I would be getting into such situations. Especially if I'm dating the school prince. Smart. Handsome. Cute. And not to forget rich.
But...for some reason I feel like maybe everyone's right. Maybe you did make a mistake. Maybe, I'm not the one for you.
I mean, look at the other girls. They are so tall. Enough to match your height while I'm short and need to tiptoe when we want to kiss. They are so pretty while even with makeup, I won't be able to compete with them. They are cute. While for me, cuteness is just not my style. They are able to make you laugh with their smart quick remarks...while I need to turn to friends to know what to say.
I'm thinking about all this as I walk to the foyer, where we always met after school. Passing the usual stares from all the people hoping and praying that things between us won't work out.
As I reach the foyer, I see you standing there, waiting, flawless as ever. Your eyes, huge yet beautiful. Your lips, nice and pink. Your hands, stuffed into your pockets as you patiently wait for me. Your whole body, leaning against the wall, the picture of cool.
"Hey," your voice alone enough to leave goosebumps along my arm. I flash a sad smile as I stood in front of you.
"Hey.."
"Let's go home!" And you intertwined our fingers before walking off, pulling me with you.

"Do you know, today we had to dissect a frog? Yeah we watched it on TV so many times but like this is totally different you know? Has your class done it yet? It's actually -"
"How do you know I'm the right one for you?" I ask, cutting you off.
"What?"
"How do you know..how do you know you didn't make a mistake choosing me? How do you know you and I are meant to be?" I ask, afraid of the reply I'm going to get.
"What's wrong? Why are you suddenly asking me all this?" We stopped walking, both standing, facing each other, in the middle of the pavement.
"Tell me. How do you know we are meant to be?"
"Why?"
"How are you sure? There are so many girls in school. Girls who are very pretty, and smart, and cute, and tall, and everything a guy would want. Girls able to make you laugh, able to make you smile when your sad, able to make you happy. I'm nothing like that. I'm not pretty. I'm not cute. I'm not smart. And I'm certainly not tall. I'm not special like the other girls. So how are you sure that it's me who you need?"
"Yeah. You're right. You're not pretty. You're not cute. You're not smart. You're not tall. There's so many other better girls than you. You're not special in anyway." I'm shocked by what you say. I know all this is true but it hurts when you say them out loud.
"Still..You may not be special in anyway...but you make life special, especially mine. And that's all that matters. Not whether you're pretty. Not whether your cute. Not whether you're tall." You continued.
I stare at you, again shocked by your reply. I thought you were going to break up with me. But you suddenly said this. I'm dumbfounded.

"It doesn't matter what you are compared to others. I don't care about others. The only person I care about is you. You make my life complete. Special. And that's why you are the one for me. That's why I need you." You finish.
Tears streamed down my face. Not tears of sadness, but tears of joy. Happiness. Happiness from hearing what you said. Happiness from hearing that you needed me. Happiness from hearing that I was the one.
Slowly, you walk closer to me and wrap your arms around me, pulling me close. I lay my head on your chest as I held your shirt and cried.
I'm so glad you said that. I'm so glad that you said I'm the one. I'm so glad you said you needed me. I'm so glad that I made your life special. I'm so glad that you and I are meant to be.
