'You should've known' I said, desperate to keep the anger out of my voice.

Our 2nd year anniversary, he didn't remember. He didn't bother to. Already late for the date, he strolled through the door, as I glued my eyes on his every movement. I thought he loved me.

'I didn't.' He was so oblivious to how I felt. How upset I was that he forgot.

So now, the joke is on me? It was my fault that I assumed he remembers? I couldn't recall the last time he said I love you. But they aren't real anyway. Because if they were, breakups wouldn't exist, divorces wouldn't occur. Because love was forever. Was it not?

'I love you' I whispered.

He used to say it so easily, so flawlessly. But now, it was so rare for him to. So hard for him to express his love. I wasn't asking for too much, was I?

'I used to.' He replied coldly.

The shortest nightmare is actually two words. 'Used to'. It signifies how much something meant in the past. Just the past. This something, is unable to go back to what it used to be. We can only go back to the memories. Only the memories can be cherished.
