Flashback-
I smoothed out my shirt and looked at myself in the mirror. I couldn't recognize who was staring back at me, but it was what I wanted. My eyes looked red from all the crying and my hair was styled in a way that made me look like a whole different person. I sighed and walked out of my room, there was no going back now. At the bottom of the stairs was my mother, waiting for me. She was acting extra cheery ever since we moved, as if it was the house that was keeping her from moving on. "Ok (Y/n), ready for your first day?" I slighly nodded and she chuckled. "(Y/n)... Why did you change your hair?!" She fixed my hair and tried to resemble it to a former look, but it wasn't happening. She sighed and just kissed my forehead, which felt nice. "I'll be in the car. Make sure to grab the pop tart I toasted for you. And the lunch!" She practically skipped out of the door and I felt a strange feeling. Was she really over his death? It couldn't be possible, she wouldn't get over him that fast. I looked at the paper bag of food, and the poptart on a plate.
"Thanks, mom." I grabbed the poptart and took two big bites, and stored away the lunch in the back of the fridge. "I'm sorry." I passed up on the food, and left the house. I made my way to the car and my mom started it, we left as soon as I got situated in the front seat. We approached the school amd my stomach did a million turns. Something wasn't right, I just wanted to crawl back into bed and skip out on this first day of my new hell. She parked in front of the school, students slowly filing in, but a lot of kids standing around. The bell rang, and people began to move. "Mom... I dont know about this." I spoke as I sat in my spot, refusing to move. She smiled at me in a sympathetic way, and put her hand on my shoulder.
"You'll be fine. Its your first day, meet some new friends. AND PLEASE STAY OUT OF TROUBLE!"

End of flashback-
I followed Richie towards the woods. He hummed a random song and swung his head from side to side to the tune. I couldn't even run away at this point. I was trapped even when I was outside. I slammed into his back and fell to the ground. "Ope, sorry sweeite." he picked me up and stepped to the side. "We're here!" He laughed. "Come on!" he grabbed my arm and ran into a field. I looked up and saw the sky. It was almost dawn, I couldnt tell you what day it was, being in the basement has made me lose all sense of time and day. The trees slowly swayed in a synchronized manner as the grass tickled my ankles. I felt like a small bunny in the middle of the field with a fox holding onto my wrist. As if on cue, he let go and seemed to be memorized by something in his hand. I peered around his arm to see what it was. The sun began to rise as he turned towards me. "Look, (Y/n)." The sun shined behind him as he looked down at me. "Its a flower that reflects you." He pushed out his hands for me to grab it. I hesitated as I inched toward it. He giggled and quickly stuck it into my hair. I flinched as a late reaction to the gesture. I stared at his in confusion. 'This is too nice. Something bad is gonna happen.' I thought as he held my hand. He fell to the ground, bringing me with him. "Look at the sun. It isn't quite as beautiful as the moon, but it tries. (Y/n)..." He turned his head towards me and Started to gaze into my eyes. "Why do you hate me?" The question was so broad and out of the blue that I laid in silence for what felt like forever.
"I..." I hesitated. Did I hate him? I couldn't even answer that for myself. He locked me in a basement, he denied me my freedom... But, I can't say I exactly hate him. His expression started become sad and I felt guilt rising inside of me. "I dont hate you." I blurted out. "I just wish... We could all go back to the way we were." I looked away from him and up to the sky. I felt a wave of sadness rush over me when a certain memory flowed into my head.

Flashback~
"Do you see anything yet?" The older male asked as he and his daughter stared at the clouds.
"No..." the small girl started feel sad that she couldn't see the shapes in the clouds.
"You have to believe you can see it, Sweetie. Trust daddy, he knows you can do it." The girl closed her eyes and opened one. All sorts of different shapes began to appear in the clouds.
"I see 'em! I see them, daddy!" The girl smiled as she looked around the sky. "There's a bunny, a turtle... A dragon! Ooh and a baby!" She pointed around in excitement. The father laughed at his daughters happiness.
"I knew you could do it, (Y/n)!" He smiled as he began to stare at the sky with his daughter.
Flashback-
I hadn't even noticed the tears that were streaming down my face like rivers. "Oh my god, (Y/n) are you ok?" Richie sat up and started to wipe away my tears. I couldn't even move from my spot. "Whats wrong?!" He raised his voice and cupped my face. My lip quivered as I looked into his eyes. They were the sane color as my dads.
"Daddy..." I whispered. Richie visibly tensed up and became flustered.
"W-what?!" he kept hold of my face.
"My... Father. He and I used to cloud watching. You have his eyes..." The girl began to cry once more. Richie calmed down and began to wipe away more tears.
"I'm so sorry, (Y/n). Just think, hes looking down at us. He's the one making the shapes in the clouds." he hugged me tightly as I stared at the sky. 'What if he can see me...' I thought. My heart was pounding and I could feel my body shaking. All of a sudden I was lifted off the ground. "Come on, (Y/n). I know you dont like it down there, but its time go eat." Richie carried me in and out of the woods. I realized that the woods was behind Jason's house. 'What happened to Jason...?-' I mentally slapped myself for worrying about a maniac. Richie was giving off a sad aura, I could feel his heart beat and it was slower than usual. I started to freak out.
"Richie are you ok?!" I asked ruining the silence. He stopped walking and looked down at me. "Your heart, Its stopping." I realized how crazy I was acting.
"Dont worry, (Y/n). I'm fine." He smiled and continued to walk towards the house. As we neared it we both saw Jason sitting on the porch. He had a smirk on his face. "Where the hell have you been?" Richie asked as he set my down.
"None of your business. I need to take (Y/n) somewhere." He spoke in a monotonous voice.
"Um no?" Richie laughed at him. "Where could you possibly want to bring her?"
"Again, none of your business. its my turn away." He brushed past Richie and grabed my arm.
"What the fuck, come back here!" Richie yelled.
"Nope. Its my turn, see ya later!" Jason threw me in his car and slammed my door. I sat in fear as to where we were going. He got in and started to drive away. I looked back to see Richie giving the back of his car a death glare. I turned to Jason to see a smirk on his face. Filled with fear, I turned and started to pay attention to the area we were in. We were heading towards my house! He pulled up in front of it and I saw my moms car. "Now (Y/n), I'm warning you. If you go in there you'll re-" I couldn't even listen to him. I could finally be home and call the Police, finally be away from the crazy people who have kept me in that hell.
"MOM!!" I screamed as I ran to the door. The door was always unlocked so I twisted the knob and it swung open. My happy expression froze in it place.
"I told you to be careful."

The Last Science [SE]
[SE has the same content as the original story, split into smaller chunks for easier reading. This story is on a temporary hiatus due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I work in healthcare and unfortunately no longer have the freetime to continue posting on a regular basis. As soon as our workload decreases, I will return. Thanks for reading! 💙] No one ever knows the whole story. Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, the fading town of Rallsburg stumbles upon an amazing discovery—magic itself. Faced with potentially world-shattering power, the people of Rallsburg keep the secret for themselves. Led by Rachel DuValle, a perpetually underestimated college student with grand ambitions, they seek to found a new society. The world beyond suspects nothing, but magic cannot stay hidden forever. A train arrives in Rallsburg carrying Alden Bensen, a directionless high school graduate. To him, magic could represent meaning for his life, an explanation for his empty existence. This potent force offers anyone the power to change humanity forever—or send it cascading into swift and total annihilation. The Last Science is an ongoing science-fiction / low-fantasy web novel series, focused on the modern world with a twist. New societies bud and grow, but the people who make them up are imperfect and flawed. The story includes elements of mystery, action, crime, interpersonal drama, relationships, philosophy, sociology, politics, and much more, all centered on the perspective characters driving the tale. This is the "Scraps Edition" of the story, where the chapters have been split up into bite-size chunks (roughly 1500-3000 words), for your convenience. The prose has been edited from its original form, with some improvements, but there are no content differences from the original. New chapters will be posted throughout each week starting on Friday and appearing on multiple days thereafter, depending on the length of the chapter. Content Warning (by request): This series delves into some topics and situations which may be upsetting for some readers. In American rating parlance, the narrative would be rated PG-13 (except for language), but some have noted the story can get pretty dark on occasion.
