I'm getting ready for bed after a long night of editing when my phone rings. Who is calling me at four in the morning?
I roll my eyes once I check the caller id. Wilbur. That's who calls at four in the morning.
"What?" I say as I answer. I can proudly say Wilbur and I are at that point in our friendship that hello's can be unnecessary at four in the morning. I usually will say it when I answer the phone, but I can be excused in this situation since it's late.
"What are you doing right now?" he asks. His words are slightly slurred which raises my brow slightly.
"I'm about to head to bed," I say as I wrap up in a blanket. "What are you up to?"
"I couldn't sleep," he says casually, "so I decided to drink some vodka."
"To help fall asleep?"
"Sure, why not?" He giggles a little bit. I smile, knowing it was going to be one of those late nights.
Wilbur and I will drink on call a lot, and our conversations are usually quite interesting. It's not the healthiest habit we could've formed, but we'll be fine I'm sure.
Wilbur begins to ramble as I lay my head down. I listen to a couple mood swings, but he seems to be calming down a bit now.
"That's just what I wanted to know, you know?" he asks after explaining a story that could've only made sense to his drunk self. "Why was there a bunny on the beach?"
"Mhm." I mumble.
"Maia?" he asks softly, whispering like we're cliche teenage girls at a sleepover.
"Yes Wilbur?" I follow his lead and talk quietly.
"Did you know your last name has my first name in it?" He giggles as he asks the question.

"Oh really?"
"Yeah, my first name is William, and your last name is Williams."
I laugh a little at the fact that he just told me my own last name.
"Does that mean you were named after me?" I ask.
"No, I was born first," he states matter-of-factly, "And it means that if we get married one day, you'll just take my last name, and I'll keep your last name as my first name. Minus an S, of course."
I shake my head. This is just drunken rambling at this point. "That doesn't make sense, Wilbur, and either way we're not going to get married."
"What if it's for emergencies?" he asks.
"Emergencies?" I laugh. "Like what? A visa?" What kind of marriage would be for an emergency? Either way, I wouldn't be able to marry Wilbur. We're too close of friends, and I don't want to ruin that. I think back to how my parents grew apart and lost the friendship. I shudder, and it runs up my spine.
"Yeah, we can be like DreamNotFound." He sounds very proud of the analogy he made.
"Wil, why would I need a visa if we live in the same country?"
He thinks about it for a minute. "I don't know, but I would marry you if it was to fool the government."
"If you say so," I mumble, practically asleep now. "What's your last name anyways? Is it not Soot?"
"No, it's Gold." I can hear the smile in his voice. "So you would be Maia Gold, if that's what you were wondering."
"That's not what I was wondering." I roll my eyes. "So it's William Gold?"
"The one and only."
"I bet you're like a third or something," I say.

He's quiet for a moment before saying, "No comment," very quietly.
"Oh my gosh, you totally are." I laugh. "William Gold the Third. Has a nice ring to it."
He's still quiet. He brought this conversation up himself, so he has to live with the consequences.
"I never realized how British you were, William Gold." I mess with him a bit.
"Don't you dare start calling me that, or I'm going to regret telling you that and being your friend." A warning lines his voice, but I'm nowhere close to scared.
"Wow, you downgraded me to just a friend?" I jokingly ask, "I thought I was your future wife?"
"In case of emergencies," he emphasizes, "Don't get your hopes up."
"Trust me I wasn't." I'm still smiling from learning his full name. "I'm good with just being friends."
"Mhm," he mumbles.
"So, William Gold," I continue lazily, "are you in any danger with the government that I should be worried about? Is that why you brought this up?"
He doesn't reply, so I keep going. "Because if that is the case, I'm going to need to know how worth it is to get married. Like a heads up, you know?"
He still doesn't reply. How rude.
"Wilbur?" I ask softly. "Are you awake?"
When he doesn't reply, I laugh quietly. I stay on the call in case he needs help later, and I roll onto my other to fall asleep.
