Zoe and Oli walked back to the tower, each praying that the plan would work. The scientist was waiting for them. He stood in front of two futuristic looking machines, both connected to the main machine.
"Ah, the chosen two. I have left instructions on these machines for you. I want to to get this machine to work," he said. Oli and Zoe exchanged a look. The scientist didn't know about the sabotaged machine. They were safe.
"Begin," he walked behind them as they rushed to the machines and grabbed their instructions.
We get the instructions and it shows us where we need to put wires and flip levers and turn knobs. It looks really confusing.
Zoe and Oli both set to work, switching levers and plugging wires in.
"Wait, I'm missing a wire, it looks like an important one," Zoe said. She didn't have a red wire. She looked over at Oli, and he didn't have one either.
I'm missing a wire, and I know Zoe is as well, so I really hope I find mine first, but I just keep going and make the circuit board look like the instructions.
The two continued to work on the circuit boards, until Zoe finished hers, and a lightbulb lit up.
Why there are lightbulbs in the medieval era I don't know.
A drawer opened on the machine, nearly hitting Zoe's shins. She crouched down and saw the red wire she needed. Quickly, she plugged it in and a second lightbulb lit up. At the same time, Oli finished his circuit board and grabbed his red wire. When he plugged it in, his second lightbulb lit up. Almost in perfect synchronisation, another flap opened up, filled with wires
I'm just behind Zoe, but I even it up and we're both onto the last task.

The final task is to fit wires together and attach the very long chain to the machine. We need to match up the different wires and attach it to the machine to power it up.
Oli and Zoe raced to put together their wire chains, trying to find the correct wires to fir together. Eventually, Zoe finished her chain and attached it to the main machine. Her final lightbulb lit up. The scientist applauded as she shared a look with Oli.
"Well done. And you, sir, have failed the challenge, and therefore must die," the scientist pushed Zoe to the side and grabbed Oli. He wasn't afraid. He was confident that he would survive. The scientist pushed him onto the machine, strapped him down and walked towards the lever on the wall attached to the machine.
"Oh, and I noticed the little modifications you made to the machine and have fixed them for you," he said.
"What?" Oli said, fear flashing across his face. The scientist pulled the lever, and immense amounts of electricity flooded into the machine. Zoe watched in horror as Oli screamed from the pain, and the scientist laughed maniacally. He struggled against the machine, but he couldn't break free. Eventually, his screams faded and his eyes closed as he died, free from the pain at last.
"You may leave," the scientist said to a horrified Zoe. She followed Alex and Lauren out of the room. As they left, they heard Alison whisper "thank you,".
———
Zoe walked back into the break room, and she saw that the totem piece had lit up. Alison was free.
"Wait, the plan failed?" Dan asked.
"The scientist noticed that we sabotaged the machine. He only told us right before he used to it murder Oli. We had no idea," Zoe said sadly. The guests realised that they couldn't cheat the system in that moment. The impact of the night suddenly hit them, and the inevitability of their deaths in the castle walls sank in again as they looked at the ever growing totem tower, each lit piece signifying two deaths.

Hawkin. Bronze Ranked Brewer.
07/11/2022 Update: We're currently at the end of the 7th arc, out of 10. My plan is to continue to publish a chapter at least 4-5x a week for the next few months. Synopsis: Hawkin found his place in the world, far from humans and monsters. He abandoned the adventuring life long ago and left civilization, opting for peace and isolation instead. After ten years out in the northern forests, he befriends a strange creature and his life changes. A traveling trio of monks then show up in Hawkin's woods and share with him the best beer he's ever had. After that beer, Hawkin wants to do nothing but accept the brewer's path and brew. This story is intended to be slow and easy. It involves a slow progression of power and brewing more powerful beers. There is occasional conflict. Thanks for reading, and I really hope this story relieves a bit of stress from your days. Note: I'm behind on Audio, but I hope to catch up soon. Linked Audio is always free. New Empire
The Kanas Empire was once a large empire that spanned the world, until one day, large portals appeared in random places. For the first few years, nothing happened, until they decided to send in a scout. The scout entered, but what returned were armies from every portal, all marching towards the capital, Kan-Celeste. Just as the enemy was knocking on Kan-Celestes doors, its ruler, Raulas was forced to use an ancient magic to transport the whole city to another world, hoping that, along with all his people, they can survive and return with a vengeance.

Saga of the Jewels VOLUME ONE COMPLETE
Prefer to listen to rather than read Saga of the Jewels? I'm also releasing it as a free audibook serial podcast on iTunes here! Epic YA JRPG-influenced GameLit progression ensemble-cast steampunk romance fantasy! When Ryn’s hometown is destroyed, will he be able to gather together the twelve Primeval Jewels in order to defeat the evil Emperor and save the world of Mid? A fan novelization of an amazing Final Fantasy game that doesn’t actually exist, that currently releases at least one chapter a month. Epic in that this will be very long. “It’s a marathon, not a sprint!” (-Kandaj) YA in that this should be enjoyable to~13-year-olds and upwards. Some gore, some swearing, some sex, but nothing more than PG-13. JRPG-influenced / GameLit in that it uses lots of JRPG tropes, particularly from Final Fantasy. I’ve read a lot of fan Final Fantasy novelisations and you can basically think of this as a fan novelisation of its own Final Fantasy game that doesn’t actually exist as a game... Progression in that the characters level up over time (though not with visible litrpg stat boxes). They grow in ability through training and experience, gain new skills, individually and as a party (think Chrono Trigger) and spend time discussing and stratgeising about how to defeat their opponents. Main protagonist from book three would definitely be able to defeat himself from book one! Ensemble-cast because we've got quite the roster of misfits here. The first volume is all from the main protagonist's POV, but it starts dancing between his and different POVs thereafter. Steampunk in that we’ve also got airships, steam trains, pistols and ambiguous ‘amber bars’ that function a bit like artificial lights… Romance in that there is lots of shipping here, a few love triangles, and you may be kept guessing as to who will actually end up together... Fantasy in that we’re in a vaguely pre-modern setting. We’ve got swords, magic, dragons, dungeons, monsters, all that good stuff. * "This story captures that Final Fantasy quality perfectly. Kiddy but also grim. The characters are great... Severely underrated and needs more favorites/follows. I look forward to seeing how this story will unfold." -Gilgamesh9999 "Starting at the end and jumping backwards is not a writing style seen every day. I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical at first, but you've executed a fairly crazy idea very skillfully so far. Overall, a strong start to what could be a very strong story." -RandomFF.netUser "You definitely have my interest piqued. It'll be interesting to see where the story goes... It definitely has an 'old school Final Fantasy' type feel to it, which I appreciate...Good job! I am glad you are going into more details about the story you laid out in the prologue...of course the big burning question is 'You know they lose in the the first chapter, so how will they end up winning?' That of course, is the story you're writing...so we'll see how it goes! #Following." -KyleQuicksilver (quotes are from reviews on other sites) * If you enjoy it, don’t forget to boost Saga of the Jewels on topwebfiction.com!
