The chef listened to the door as the servants of the castle died. He had poisoned their food on the request of the dark spirit. He knew that the murderer was taking care of the family upstairs. He laughed to himself as he returned to the kitchen. As he walked in and shut the door, the dark spirit appeared before him.
"Is the deed done?" it asked.
"It is," he replied.
"This castle is ready for my games to begin. I hope you're prepared," the spirit said.
"I am," he replied. The spirit vanished. The chef began to sharpen a large cooking knife, grinning to himself. Someone was going to die at his hand again.

Chinese culture has inspired a lot of the novel, but much of it is an amalgamation of different cultures, some made up and some not. Think Xianxia + Shounen with a mix of western and eastern fantasy elements.
