~~~~~~~
i opened my eyes only to be blinded by some kind of bright light, but soon my eyes adjusted themselves. i blinked a couple of times before i turned to the side to someone with black hair laying on the side of the bed.
his hand was holding mine tightly. who is he?
feeling just a bit uncomfortable, i tried pulling my hand away only to see him shift his head slightly. his face was now clearly visible. for some reason, seeing his face made my head hurt a bit. i pulled my hand away and closed my eyes and i slightly held at my head.
suddenly, i opened them back up only to see the guy sitting up, stretching his arms out above his head. he opened his eyes and stared into mine.
"soojin, you're awake!" he exclaimed as sat closer to my bed.
but i stayed still looking at him. "who are you?"
the look on his face changed from happiness to seriousness. his lips were slightly apart as he looked at me.
"it's me, yoongi. we go to high school together," he softly said, "you're my girlfriend."
girlfriend? that's crazy.
"i'm sorry but i think you got the wrong person. i-i have no idea who are. so can you please move away from me?" i told him seriously.
suddenly the door opened and i saw a two women walk in. one had a lab coat on. the other frantically walked over to me, tears slowly started filling her eyes.
"soojin-ah. you're awake," she quickly came to my side. i kept my eyes on the guy as we stared at each other for a while until i broke the contact. he stood back allowing the woman to come next to me.
"mom, who is that?" i asked her softly as i softly looked at the guy with black hair again.
she looked at me, confusion written all over her face. she looked at the guy and then back at me. and she finally spoke.
"soojin, do you not remember who he is?"
i looked once more at him. there was a painful look in his eyes as he looked back at me but my mind was blank. slowly, i shook my head.
a small gasp escaped her lips as she looked at me and then to the woman in the lab coat, who held a clipboard in her hand.
"why can she not remember him?" my mother suddenly asked her.
"well, due to her accident, it affected her pretty badly."
"so what does that mean?" the only guy in the room had asked.
the doctor in the lab coat looked at the guy first and then at me after letting out a soft sigh.
"you have amnesia. it seems that most of the memories you had, you cannot remember. as of right now, we are not completely sure if it is temporary or not."
"so what you're saying is that her loosing her memories can end up being permanent?" he asked.
the doctor had let out a hesitantly nodded her head. "i'm sorry. in the meantime, you can both try to help her remember the things she has forgotten. give it time. time is what she needs."
"thank you, doctor im," my mother said finally. the doctor gave her bow and then left the room.
"soojin, can you not remember anything? can you not remember him?" my mother asked as she pointed once again to the only guy in the room who goes by the name yoongi.
"i-i can't remember him. i don't know him at all."
"soojin... i-i'm... it's me, yoongi. we met in school in the music room, where i first encountered you. we're in the same class grade," he started to say.
i stared at him seeing how much it was hurting him. and for some reason, it was hurting me seeing him like this.
"i'm sorry. i really can't remember who you are. can we just hold on for a second, please. this is too much," i said.
"just get some rest for now," my mother finally said. "come on yoongi. let her sleep."
i watched the two walk out leaving the light on. i held at my head slightly feeling it pound ever few seconds. so i laid my head back down, but then saw at the left side of my bed a desk full of flowers in vases. there were so many pretty flowers all kept together in vases. slowly, i reached for a card in one of the bouquets and read the small handwriting.
"this are my first flowers to you. please wake up soon." -yoongi
i pursed my lips together and reached for another one of the cards placed on the bouquets.
"i replaced the water in the vases. i hope you like the flowers. i really miss you soojin-ah." -yoongi
all of them were from him. yoongi.
just remembering his face made the pain in my head appear once more. why does it hurt everytime i think of his face?
The Girl from the Mountain
Alexandra Bedford is a weapon, a young woman with telekinetic powers capable of leveling entire cities, born to fight in the desolate remains of post-apocalyptic North America. There is only one problem: she may be losing control of her abilities. Sixteen years after a global pandemic devastated the earth’s population, the lines in the old United States have been drawn between the Cheyenne Directorate in Colorado and the New England Alliance on the East Coast. The Directorate, of which Alexandra is a part, is a small but powerful organization dedicated to returning the country to its former glory. However, when a diplomatic mission to the New England Alliance goes wrong, Alexandra finds herself at the center of a bloody civil war. Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!
