《Worlds Apart》Chapter 6

Manik stopped his car just before the construction site. Sonakshi and Manik got off the car and looked at the half constructed building towering them. They looked at the thin steel rods coming out of the mid-constructed floor, multiple bags of cement and sand lying all over, broken stones, little pebbles... The sight in front of their eyes looked like it had come straight out of a horror movie. "I can't believe uncle might be responsible for this..." Sonakshi spoke, startled. "Well believe it, anyways what IS this smell?" Manik remarked placing his palm on his nose. "It smells of sewage, probably because during the rains, the sewer overflows into the river." Sonakshi told him. "Anyway, why did you bring me here?" Manik forwarded his hand and signed Sonakshi to take his hand. Sonakshi placed her hand in his, Manik then spoke, pointing towards a small gap in between the abandoned site and the river, "You see that, that's an entrance to a little garden-like area, it's covered with bushes and ferns and moss, come." "You still aren't telling me why you brought me here!" Sonakshi emphasised on her question. "Just follow me Sona... come.." Manik responded and led the way to the little green area.

Manik looked around, and had a little Eureka moment when he spotted something that looked like a night vision camera. He walked towards it, still hand in hand with Sonakshi. He lifted it and smiled to himself, "This. This is what I was looking for...I had come here few weeks ago, when it was dark, I dropped this camera, and since my only night vision tool was lost, I couldn't find it then. Then ofcourse I didn't come back looking for it, because I obviously had another camera." Manik said. Sonakshi left his hand with a jerk and said, "For the last time Manik, you've confused me enough all this while! Will you speak something that I can understand!! Why do you have night vision cameras? And if you have come here before how didn't you notice this project? Everytime I feel like I'm getting to know you, I end up failing to understand you!" Manik was a bit surprised looking at this angry, and dominating side of Sonakshi and decided to lighten her mood a little, he spoke, "Matlab mujhe zyada samajhne ki koshish kar rahi ho?" Sonakshi retorted, "Manik ye time hai flirt karneka??" He then held her by the shoulders and said, "Sona...Sona calm down... Listen I've those night vision cameras because I like to randomly walk out at night and come to such silent and quiet places...and about this building, ofcourse I noticed it, but I didn't know it was Dad's project... To be honest, I've never known about half of his projects..." Sonakshi looked on as Manik gave her an explanation...this man was getting more mysterious and confusing by the minute,"Ok Manik, it's been about 6-7 weeks I've met you and I've seen three very different versions of you, what are you really?" "I'm the Manik you've been friends with lately, and about dad, we have never shared a good bond...we never had those deep father-son moments or conversations, have you not noticed, that I'm never sticking by my dad like an ideal son in any function or party, I'm always away from him, yes I listen to what he says, we tease each other, but there is no ideal father son relationship...from the start...I am not interested to know what's going on in his life, and nor is he...Now do you get me ha?" Manik replied, to the point. "Ok fine...now what about the camera?" "Come let's go back to the car." Manik said, and they went back to where the car was parked. Manik took out an aux cable from his car and connected the camera to his phone and began downloading photographs. "You aren't expecting it to have turned on magically and clicked a photo of your father around here?" "Babe it was on when I lost it, and you know it has a pretty good battery, might have lasted for a day or two, if we are lucky we can get SOME clue." Manik answered her and went through the photos. He continued going through the photos, until he came to one- it was not a clear picture, but to Manik it looked helpful. He showed the photo to Sonakshi, "Look" "It's blur and I can't see a human figure or a human silhouette!" Sonakshi told him. "The shoes Sonakshi, those are dad's!" Sonakshi looked at the photo closely, "Oh, look at the next photo... It may have a full picture..." She suggested. Manik downloaded the next photo, but it was just a photo of a coyote. "No, that's it, that's the only lead we have..." Sonakshi exclaimed, dejected. "Lead? Oh hello we are not going to find my dad ok?! I just wanted to know if he had ever come here to confirm if this hospital was really his! I got my answer... I've already wasted half of my and your day, come I'll drop you..." Sonakshi argued, "Manik if not for your sake, then atleast for your mom... You have to find him!" "No Sonakshi I don't... I don't need to find him, I'm financially independent enough to take care of my mom and me... Moreover if I find him, I will have to turn him in to the police...I don't have the heart to do that..." Sonakshi understood his dilemma, but she promised herself that she will find his dad...she had to...she couldn't let something make Manik or his mother sad...she just couldn't...she had begun to care too much about Manik over the weeks.
