Freddie takes a sip of beer and stares at Janice

Janice - Well come on then Fred my boy, let's hear it

Freddie - How am I supposed to land her in it without landing myself in it too? I might not be the brightest bloke walking the planet but I'm not that dumb. I will only be incriminating myself as well as her by telling you

Janice - You won't Fred, I will make sure you are protected I swear it

Freddie - How the hell will you do that?

Janice - I just will, trust me please. Come on you must get sick of being my mother's bitch. I know she scares you, she makes you do as you're told with threats of harm if you don't, threatens to expose all your past crimes

Freddie shrugs

Freddie - Sure she's a bitch but she pays well so I live with it

Janice - Well I will pay well too and I won't hold it over you afterward as she does. Come on Fred help me out here, it will be worth your while and you will be protected I promise

Freddie still looks very reluctant but clearly, Janice is getting him to come around to the idea

Freddie - If I do help you I want 10 grand for taking such a risk

Janice nods her head

Janice - You can have it

Freddie - In cash, I won't take a check

Janice nods head

Janice - Fair enough

Janice has persuaded him, he starts to talk

Freddie - She was to blame for the collapse of Blackmoor prison. Sure the earthquake brought the building down, but it never would have happened if she hadn't cut so many corners in order to save money. She was to blame for all those deaths, including Lucy Ferguson. Her cronies in the department knew about it and decided to protect her, cover it up. Ted knew and he was understandably angry about it, he tried to kill Eileen by trying to drown her in a bath, but he failed. He made it clear to her he would try again so...

Freddie pauses

Janice - So that's when she contacted you?...

Freddie - Yeah.....asked me to fit his car with a bomb. She told me she was meeting him at a restaurant and instructed me to fit the device into his car while he was inside the Restaurant. The car park of the restaurant was dimly lit and it was easy for me to do what I needed to do without anyone noticing

Janice - And how much did she pay you to end the poor sod's life?

Freddie - Five grand

Janice can't hide her contempt

Janice - Five grand for a life, not much is it? That poor bastard, he, may not have been a saint but he was a decent man, he didn't deserve that

Freddie shrugs

Freddie - I was merely following instructions, it was never anything personal against him. I have to make a living somehow same as everyone else

Janice - Yeah right

Freddie - So now you know everything, I want my 10 grand and I want you to make sure you keep your promise to keep me out of it. If Eileen goes down that's fine, but I ain't going with her

Suddenly Inspector Grace and two colleagues arrive

Janice - Sorry Fred, I'm afraid I set you up. Did you get all that fellas?

Grace - Yes, every word of it

Freddie - Hey what is this?

Janice removes her bugging device and shows it to Freddie

Freddie looks horrified as Grace shows him his badge

Grace - Alright son, let's go to the station shall we

Freddie - Look whatever you heard its all lies ok, I was making it up!

Grace - let's just go shall we, we can discuss it more down the station

Freddie gets out of his seat and the colleagues jump on him immediately and place him in handcuffs

Freddie looks angrily at Janice

Freddie - You bitch!

Janice smiles

Janice - Call it payback for that time when you took my child from the hospital. I have never been so scared as I was at that moment when my child was missing. I hated my mother for doing that but I hated you too Freddie. I've always hated you for doing her dirty work for her

Freddie is led away, cursing as he goes

Grace is still behind with Janice

Grace - Good work, now we've got her for the collapse of Blackmoor too, that's 30 more deaths

Janice - I knew she was to blame for that too. I knew something like that would happen there, I remember seeing the cracks there. She shouldn't get away with it

Grace - Well we've got her now, she won't be getting away with anything

Janice - I hope not. Do you need me anymore tonight?

Grace - No, we can manage from here. But you did very well tonight, well done

Janice - Well I knew the offer of money would work on him, With Fred, it's always all about the money. He really thought he was going to get 10 grand out of me and that was too good an offer to resist, I knew it would be

At Wentworth, the three women are still looking at Vern

Marina - Well? I'm waiting

Vern - Look shall I go and see if I can find Mr Moran for you?

Marina - No, that can wait. I want to know how Mrs Reynolds knows you and why she thinks your name is Vince

Vern - Look it's no big deal really, it really doesn't matter

Marina - I'll be the judge of that

Ann has lost patience

Ann - For god's sake, look I met this man for a blind date and he told me his name was Vince and that he was a businessman with a chain of Restaurants. He never said anything about working in a prison. We got on well and we have met up two or three times since then

Marina - Oh really? I see! So that's what you get up to every night when you aren't with me!

Ann - You mean he is dating you too?

Marina - Yes he is, the two-timing hound! Well as of now it's finished, you hear that Vern, or should I say Vince? it's over!

Vern - Good, I prefer Ann, she is more classy

Marina slaps Vern across the face and storms off, leaving Vern, Ann, and Eileen

Vern - It's so nice to see you here Ann. maybe later we can have a drink and a bite to eat and have a good talk

Ann gives him a chilly look

Ann - Forget it, now that I know all this I most certainly do not want any more dates with you!

Vern - Come on Ann, I really like you

Ann - And I liked you too, but now that I find out you are a liar and a two-timer I am no longer interested thank you very much!

Vern - But I can't lose you and Marina, I will be left with no one!

Ann - Which is entirely your own fault, I am sure you will find someone to replace us in time. Some other poor, foolish woman

Vern looks sorry for himself

Eileen - Yes well I think it's time to concentrate on work now if you don't mind. Leave your personal lives for later

Ann - Yes, of course, I am sorry Mrs Raymond

Eileen - Let's go to the office shall we, see if Mr Moran is around

Bob is walking along a corridor when he runs into an upset Marina

Bob - Miss Donovan, are you ok?

Marina - Yes I'm fine. I just found out what a bastard Vern is that's all. Eileen arrived with the new head of department, they are looking for you

Bob - Have you met the new head?

Marina - Yes, a Mrs Reynolds. Apparently, you already know her, she used to be governor here

Bob - Ann Reynolds?

Marina - Yes, that's it

Bob looks surprised

Bob - I didn't expect it to be her. Still, it will be lovely to see her again. She is a very competent lady, she will be good at the job. Meg will be happy about it too

Eileen, Vern, and Ann are in the office

Ann looks around

Ann - Last time I saw this place I said I'd never come back here again. Funny how I couldn't keep away in the end

Eileen looks annoyed

Eileen - Where is Bob, really I expected him to be here. He knew we were coming this evening

Vern - Would you like me to go and look for him?

Eileen - Yes, please. Really this is most disappointing!

Vern - I will have a good look, see if I can find him

Vern is just leaving as Bob arrives

Eileen- Ah there you are, I was about to send Mr Schofield to find you. I was expecting you to be here ready for us

Bob - Yes I am sorry Eileen, I was unavoidably detained by a problem with a few inmates

Vern - Did you sort the problem or do I need to deal with anything?

Bob - Yes I sorted it, no further action is needed

Eileen - Well you're here now anyway and I gather you already know Mrs Reynolds?

Bob looks at Ann with a smile

Bob - Yes I do, its very good to see you again Ann

Ann smiles back

Ann - Good to see you again too Bob

They shake hands and Bob leans across and gives Ann a kiss on the cheek

Bob - A superb choice as head of the department. Meg will be delighted to see you too

Vern - Do you need me for anything or shall I get on my rounds now?

Eileen - No we don't need you anymore tonight Vern, you may go on your rounds

Vern nods his head and leaves

Bob - So how does it feel to be back here Ann?

Ann - Honestly? It feels strange. Last time I was here I never wanted to step foot in a prison again and yet here I am back again. Once you've worked in the prison service it never quite leaves your system

Bob - Very true. I'd find it hard to go back to a regular job after this. It certainly keeps you on your toes

Eileen - Well I'm glad to see that you both get on so well.it makes it easier when we all get on together

Vern bumps into Marina in the corridor

She tries to get passed and he prevents her

Vern - Talk to me honey, please

Marina - Get out of my way Vern!

Vern - No not until you talk to me

Marina - I do not want to talk to you, you're a cheating rat

Vern - But we must talk, I am sure we can sort all this out!

Marina - If you don't let me get past right now I will knee you very hard in the bollocks, your choice

Vern sighs and steps aside

Marina- Thank you

Marina marches off

Cassie is alone in her cell as Vern arrives in the doorway

Vern - thought I'd come and say hello to my sweet girly!

Cassie jumps up, on edge immediately

Cassie - Daddy Vern, please. I am so tired tonight and someone could catch us, it will be lock up soon

Vern walks across the room to her with a chuckle

She tries to back away as he corners her and strokes her face

Vern - Just relax will you, we won't do anything tonight, I just came to say hello that's all

Cassie sighs with relief

Cassie - Thank god for that, I really wasn't in the mood for it tonight

Vern - But we will play again very soon

Cassie - I wish we wouldn't, I don't enjoy it

Vern pulls her hair, she gives a mild squeal of pain

Vern - But I enjoy it and that's the only thing that matters, got it?

Cassie nods her head and grimaces

Vern lets go of her hair

Vern - I knew you would understand, you're my smart, good little girly. You must try so hard to please your daddy and I know you will!

Cassie - Yes daddy Vern

Exterior shot of a mansion

Grace is inside with a woman. The woman is the same one who was at the meeting with Eileen when they agreed to cover up the collapse of Blackmoor

The woman seems annoyed

Woman - Inspector I was planning to go to bed soon, so I hope this won't take long

Grace - I suspect it won't take very long at all. I want some answers to a few questions and as long as I get the right answers I will be out of your hair very soon

The woman - Go on then, ask your questions

Grace - It's about Eileen Raymond. All I want really is some confirmation of something. Was she to blame for Blackmoor collapsing due to cutting corners?

The woman looks stunned by the question and not keen to answer

Grace - Think carefully before you answer. Be straight with me now and there will be no repercussions for you or the rest of your colleagues. The only one who will suffer is Raymond. But try to pull the wool over my eyes and I won't like that. The corruption will be exposed and you will all be for the high jump, your choice

The woman sighs and bows her head

The woman - This isn't easy for me, Eileen has been a friend for years

Grace - That may be so but now you have no choice but to throw her to the wolves. That's if you're smart enough to want to save your own neck and the necks of all your other colleagues who were in on the cover-up

The woman -Alright, I get the message!

Grace- So?

The woman - So yes, she was to blame, she cut corners. She signed forms consenting to inadequate building work to take place. She cared more about saving money than safety standards

Grace - And because of that 30 people died!

The woman - Yes, well we had no idea what she was up to. We left her to it, trusted her to do the right thing. We had no idea she would cut corners like that, we were as disgusted by it as you are

Grace - But you were still prepared to cover it up and protect her?

The woman - We stick together in this job, scratch each others backs Its the way it works

Grace - Yes I'm sure of that

The woman - How did you find out anyway? I would like to know

Grace - Eileen had Ted Ferguson killed

The woman gasps with shock

The woman - Oh Jesus, I had no idea she did that to Ted!

Grace - Yes well she did and tonight we got some evidence on her. That's how we found out about Blackmoor. Whenever anyone murders someone there is always a motive. Ted wasn't about to let the death of his daughter go, so that was her motive for killing him

The woman - And what will happen to her now?

Grace - She's finished, she will go to prison

The woman - She's a very powerful woman, she usually gets her own way

Grace - Not this time she won't. She's been exposed. We've got too much on her and she can't get out of this one. Well thank you for your cooperation, I will leave you in peace now...and I meant what I said, there will be no repercussions for you. You were wise and cooperated with me

Eileen pulls onto her driveway and gets out of her car

A man appears from the darkness and grabs her, she is startled

The man is one of Grace's police colleagues from the pub earlier

Eileen - Who the hell are you? You scared the life out of me!

The detective shows her his ID badge

The detective - Come with me please Mrs Raymond, you are wanted for questioning down at the station

The detective begins to lead her to his car

Eileen - Questioning about what?

The detective - For the murder of Ted Ferguson and for being responsible for the Blackmoor prison collapse resulting in the deaths of 30 people

Eileen - I know nothing about any of it and I demand you let me go at once!

The detective - I can't do that, you are under arrest

Eileen - This is an outrage! Do you realize who I am?

The detective - Yes I do, but you're still under arrest

Eileen - Heads will roll over this, yours included. But don't say I didn't try to warn you

The detective opens the car door

The detective - Get in and shut up

Eileen gets in, shaking with rage

GATESLAM

PART 2 ,

Eileen is sitting in an interview room as Grace walks in

Grace - Good evening Eileen, how are you tonight?

Eileen - Pissed off that's how I am. Being dragged in here like this is an outrage! It is late and I am tired after a long day, all I wish to do is go to bed

Grace - Yes, I don't suppose you would be too happy about it. But I'm afraid you are in serious trouble now. You see we know everything, we know you were to blame for the collapse of the prison, the deaths of 30 people, and for the murder of Ted Ferguson

Eileen - What nonsense! You are a mad man Grace. Well I will see to it that you lose your job over this

Grace - We have evidence

Eileen - Really? I find that hard to believe

Grace turns smugly to the detective sitting next to him

Grace - Play her the tape

The detective presses the play button on the tape player

Freddie and Janice's voices can be heard

Janice is sitting in the empty lounge room at her and Richard's place as Richard comes into the room in his dressing-gown

Richard- Are you coming to bed Jan love? Its nearly midnight

Janice - I don't feel tired Rich, I am wide awake

Richard sits beside her

Richard - Whats on your mind Jan? i can tell something is

Janice looks at him

Janice - In the morning we will have to get Maureen, Tommy, and my father together, you see I will have to tell them some important news

Richard -What news Jan? Whats happened?

Janice - My mother is going to prison, she should be in police custody right now as we speak. She will be charged with a number of very serious crimes

Richard (shocked) - How did they catch her?

Janice - I was behind it all, I set her henchman up to reveal all about her

Richard - I knew you'd do something like this one day, I don't really blame you after the way she has treated you

Janice gets up to pour a whisky

Janice - Want one?

Richard - Not particularly but I'll have one if you're having one

Janice pours two whiskies and sits back down and hands Richard his

Richard - You don't seem as happy as I'd expect you to be

Janice - I'm not as happy as I expected to be either. I just feel so incredibly sad about it all

Richard - Why?

Janice sips her whisky and smiles sadly

Janice- Because I wish things had been different between us that's why. It didn't need to be like that, toxic, hateful. It could have been so different
