A line of prisoners is lined up grimly as Vern walks up and down the line inspecting them. There are no familiar faces among the group

Vern - You prisoners have been selected as the first group to take part in our new program here, now isn't that exciting for you

The prisoners look terrified

Cassie is outside the charity shop looking reluctant to go in

With a deep breath, she eventually enters and walks out to the back where an amiable looking woman is already at work

Cassie - Morning Tilly! Is Mrs Longfield here?

Tilly - Yes, she is in the kitchen I will go and let her know you are here

Cassie thanks

Tilly disappears out the back and Cassie can hear her talking to Mrs Longfield

Tilly - Cassie is back, she just arrived

Mrs Longfield can be heard before she is seen, sighing deeply as if the weight of the world is on her shoulders

She emerges into the room, looking as miserable as sin

Cassie - Morning Mrs Longfield!

Instead, she examines her watch

Mrs Longfield - You are half a minute late!

Cassie - I am so sorry, but it is only half a minute. Does it really matter?

Marina - It will be fine Vern. Anyway I was a bit surprised that you didn't send Butler and Wilson to the program, I know how much you hate them

Vern looks pleased with himself

Vern - Well as it happens I have got something else in mind for those two, for the time being anyway

Marina - And Lorraine Dawson? I thought she would be going, so I was a bit surprised to find out that she isn't among the selected

Vern - She is on the list to go in the future, whenever new placements come up

Cassie and Mrs Longfield are in the yard

Mrs Longfield smirks smugly as she shows Cassie the bins

Mrs Longfield - These bins really reek! So, get yourself a bucket of hot soapy water, get a sponge and get to work on them!

Stud and Geoff are stood before Vern in the office

Marina is also present

Vern - Good morning men!

The two men look scared but are trying their best to hide it

The two men leave with Marina, looking angry

Cassie has finished scrubbing the bins and walks back into the shop with her bucket

Mrs. Longfield, Tilly, and two other women are stood around drinking tea and gossiping

Tilly - I am sure now she will listen!

Mrs Longfield - If she had listened to me right from the start she would have saved herself all this heartbreak!

Cassie - Erm Mrs Longfield, I have finished the job

Vern picks up his coffee

Geoff and Stud watch intently

Vern shrugs and takes another sip, he is concentrating hard

Vern - Well it tastes alright, it's not bad I guess. Definitely an interesting taste....extra cream you say?

Vern carries on drinking is coffee

Geoff and Stud stand there trying to hide their smirks

Mrs Longfield shows Cassie a storeroom, stacked from floor to ceiling with junk

Mrs Longfield - This room needs tidying. Sort the stuff into neatly organized piles. The shoes go together, the electricals go together and so on, right now it is absolutely unorganized

Cassie looks horrified

Cassie - You want me to do this all on my own without help?

Mrs Longfield - Yes, anything wrong with that?

Cassie - It will take ages, can't someone else help me too?

Mrs. Longfield - No, the rest of us have other things to do!

Cassie - Stand around drinking tea and gossiping sure!

Cassie is furious as she begins work

Lorraine is in her cell as Vern arrives at the gate

Vern - Good morning Dawson, I came to see how you are as it was reported to me that you were rather distressed

Lorraine - I am not very happy at all

Vern - Well I am here to listen to your complaints so go-ahead

Lorraine - Well I really want my daughter's murder to be investigated. You lot think that by sending me here you can gag me and make me forget about my daughter. Well, you can't ok! I will never forget and I want her murder investigated

Vern -My understanding of it is that she committed suicide, there was no murder

Lorraine - That was a cover-up can't you see? If you think that I really believe for even one second that my daughter killed herself then you are a fool, all of you are fools

Vern - Careful now Dawson, I won't tolerate being called a fool by anyone. especially not my prisoners

Lorraine - I am not scared of you

Vern storms away

Lorraine yells after him angrily

Lorraine - I JUST WANT JUSTICE FOR MY DAUGHTER, THAT'S ALL!

Geoff and Stud are washing up the kitchen and laughing

Geoff - He actually drank the whole cup!

Stud - I know, it was hilarious...

Marina is in the background looking over

Marina - I don't know what you two are finding so hilarious but I expect to see more work and less of the chatting and laughing

Stud - Sorry Miss, we will get on quietly now

Marina - You can both be silent, totally silent. I am imposing a ban on talking

Cassie is hard at work, looking stressed out

Mrs Longfield and the ladies are in the other room chatting away again

Mrs Longfield sighs

Mrs Longfield- Well I suppose I had better go and see how the girl is getting on

Mrs Longfield leaves and walks down the passageway to the storeroom

Mrs Longfield stands to observe

Cassie - Hi...

Mrs Longfield - Hello...I came to see how you are getting on

Cassie - Working hard as you can see

Mrs Longfield - You do not seem to have got very far, I would have expected you to have got more done by now

Cassie - I am doing this all on my own, its a job that two people should be doing, its a lot for one person to do on their own

Mrs Longfield - Excuses excuses! That McPherson girl was full of them too

Cassie - Can I take a break yet?

Mrs Longfield - No I do not think so. I want you to complete the job before I let you on a break

Eileen is with Vern, Marina, and Jonathan on the Hospital wing

Jonathan - Dr Cowper, he will meet you later. He is busy in the other room now

Eileen - Well I will inspect the prisoners then while I am here

They all look terrified but sedated

Jonathan - They have all had injections today, the first step of the experiments

Cassie is in the kitchen making a coffee as Mrs Longfield arrives

Mrs Longfield - Er...I did not say you could have a break yet!

Cassie - I decided myself to have one, it was getting ridiculous

Eileen, Vern, and Marina are in the office

Eileen - It looks like John and the mysterious Dr. Cowper are up and running nicely

Vern - I wish they would tell us more about these experiments. I would like to know what they injected the inmates with today

Eileen - Who cares! They both know what they are doing. I for one certainly am not worried one bit

Suddenly a panic-stricken Jonathan bursts into the office

The storeroom looks neat and well organized as Cassie stands to inspect her work

She then goes to find Mrs Longfield

Mrs Longfield is sitting reading a magazine and dunking custard creams in a cup of tea as Cassie arrives

Cassie - Mrs Longfield...

Mrs. Longfield continues to read her magazine

Cassie - Mrs Longfield?....

Mrs Longfield is irritated

Mrs Longfield - Wait for one second girl, do not be so rude and impatient! Let me finish what I am doing

Cassie - It's just that I finished the job

Vern - And just what are we supposed to tell the family of this prisoner when they ask why their relative has disappeared off the face of the earth?

Eileen - We will say they escaped of course

Mrs Longfield inspects the storeroom

Mrs Longfield - Yes, not a bad job I suppose

Cassie - I think I did a damn good job considering I was working alone without help

Mrs Longfield - Well now its time for a new job

Cassie - No wait, it's time for a break surely

Mrs Longfield - Oh alright, ten minutes then

Cassie - I will just nip to the shops for some lunch

Mrs Longfield - No you won't

Cassie - But I forgot to bring anything in with me, I am feeling hungry

Mrs Longfield - You don't step foot outside this shop during your work hours unless I say you can....and I am saying no. Now if you want that break I suggest you take it now because you have already used up your first minute talking to me....now you only have nine minutes left!

Cassie - And what am I supposed to do about lunch?

Mrs Longfield - You will have to go hungry

Vern and Marina are in the staff room

Vern - This is diabolical, absolutely diabolical

Marina - Just relax Vern

Vern - I can't relax, I worry about what might happen next. One inmate is dead and it's only the first day

Marina - Yes I agree it's a bad start, but they will use the body for what they want, cut it open, and after that, we will dispose of it well. The relatives will be told the prisoner escaped and it will all work out fine

Vern - Well I hope the rest of the day is a quiet one, not sure I can deal with any more drama after that

Officer Owens arrives at Lorraine's cell and stares in disgust

She gags and covers her nose at the smell

Lorraine has smeared excrement all over the walls....and herself

Officer Owens rushes off

Cassie is sitting in the yard with her coffee as Mrs Longfield arrives and taps her watch

Mrs Longfield - Time to press on

Cassie - And I cannot even be allowed time to finish my coffee?

Mrs Longfield - No, you cannot

Cassie - A ten-minute break is really not long you know. I think half an hour would be better

Mrs Longfield - Well I do not care what you think. I said 10 minutes and now the times up, so instead of sitting there arguing with me, get up and get moving!

Vern and Marina are still in the staff room as Officer Owens rushes in

Officer Owens - Mr Schofield the prison Dawson has decided to have a dirty protest in her cell! It's a mess, a real disgusting mess

Marina - Oh no, I hate it when prisoners do that. It's so filthy and horrible

Vern - We'd best go and deal with it then
