Judy - Yeah, where the hell is she? We've all been wondering

Sue - I'm afraid I have some bad news for you all.....

A rough-looking Vera arrives in the staff room where Janice is having a coffee

Janice looks shocked to see her

Janice - Vera, I didn't think you'd be in today

Vera - Of course, I'm in today, I have to get to the bottom of who did this to Cassie. I have to find out who the culprit is and make sure they get their comeuppance!

Back in the dining room

The women look upset but particularly Bea and Judy

Judy - Hell, that poor kid. She's a nice kid, she doesn't deserve this

Bea looks angry

Bea - Who did this to her Mrs Bailey?

Sue - We don't know yet, that's what we need to find out. Inspector Rouse will be coming to investigate later today

Bea - Not Grace this time then?

Sue - No, Grace is tied up on another case right now..you must all try and co-operate and tell him anything you know when he arrives. Ok well I'll leave you to finish your breakfasts now

Sue leaves the room

The women sit subdued

Bea - That poor kid, this is awful

Judy - I suppose there is always the chance she could pull through and make a full recovery, look at your Chloe, Bea, they thought she could end up with brain damage but she was fine

Bea - Well I hope so, I don't like to think of a young girl like Cassie brain-damaged for life

Bea attempts to eat some of her breakfast but ends up pushing the plate away

Bea - lost my appetite now!

Bea lights a cigarette and sits looking mad

Bea - If I find out who did this to her they are dead

Judy - Hey leave it to Rouse eh Bea!

Bea - No way! The police are useless we all know that

Spider is listening from her table

Spider - I thought you'd be smart enough to work out who did it without needing to think about it Smith

Judy - Oh and I suppose you've worked it out have you?

Spider- Sure I have, it was pretty obvious

Bea looks over at Spider

Bea - Ok, I'll bite....tell me who it was then? Show us how smart you are?

Spider - It was Clements. I mean think about it, Cassie is last seen leaving this room with Clements to go up to solitary. After that, she doesn't return and the next we hear about her is this

Bea and Judy exchange a look

Judy - Hell she's right Bea...

Bea - I know she's bloody right, I can't believe I didn't think it myself

Judy - What are we going to do now?

Bea - Well we can't let her get away with it can we

Judy - She isn't likely to own up to it

Bea - Then we'll have to use our brains and find a way to expose her. I hate to say this, but what has happened to poor Cassie might be what we were looking for to get rid of her for once and for all

Vicki is laying in her bed, curled up in a ball as Kelly arrives in the doorway

Kelly - Morning McPherson, not getting up today?

Vicki - I don't feel well

Kelly - Hardly surprising, that was quite a thrashing you took last night wasn't it

Vicki - I thought you were going to kill me

Kelly laughs sadistically

Kelly - Yes, that's what I wanted you to think. Of course, I will kill you eventually, but you won't know when. There will be plenty more thrashings for you until the final one when I end your life

Vicki - Why are you doing this to me?

Kelly - You know why!

Vicki - But I told you it wasn't me

Kelly - And I told you I don't believe that, so now you will suffer

Vicki - If you're going to kill me I'd rather you just did it now and got it over with

Kelly - Yes I bet you would, but that's too easy McPherson. I want you to suffer for a long time first, it will be the mental suffering that will get you more than the physical suffering, waiting, and wondering. Never knowing when the time will arrive. Well I'll catch you later

The women are working quietly as Vera marches in

Vera - Ok you lot, I want your attention

They all look at Vera

Vera - I want you to tell me who hurt Cassie right this second!

No one responds

Vera - I mean it, damn you pack of animals! I won't let you get away with what you did to her. Hand the culprit over at once!

Bea - Look we don't know who it is

Vera - Rubbish, you must know something!

Silence

Vera - I won't give up until I find out who did this to Cassie!

Vera storms out again

The women are left alone again and Bea looks amazed

Bea - What's got into old Vera? Since when has she let herself be that concerned for any of us?

Spider chuckles

Spider - Perhaps the fact that Cassie is her daughter might have something to do with it

Bea- Her daughter? Oh shut your face Simpson, you never stop talking crap do you

Spider - It's the truth, she is Vera's daughter. Pretty funny how you reckon you know everything that goes on here but you didn't know about that eh Smith

Vicki is still in bed as Toni arrives in the room

Toni - What's all this McPherson? You don't want to go to work today?

Vicki - No, I feel ill miss

Toni - What's wrong with you then?

Vicki - Dunno, just a bug I guess

Toni - Someone will have to ring the charity shop and let them know you won't be in today, we don't want you getting fired for being unreliable

Vicki - Why worry about it? The bitch there hates me anyway!

Toni - Don't be silly, I'm sure she doesn't hate you...now do you want to see a dr?

Vicki - No I'll be fine

Toni - Well if you don't think you need to see a dr then I don't see why you can't get yourself up and make your way to the charity shop. You can't be that seriously ill. It's a really nice day out there too, you must like getting out in the sunshine rather than being stuck in here all-day

Vicki - Yes of course I do, not that I see much of it during the parts where I am stuck inside the shop

Toni - The temptation to just not bother coming back here at the end of the day must be so strong. I admire you for managing not to give in to that, it would be the easiest thing in the world to simply not come back at the end of the day

Vicki seems to be having an idea in her head

She gets up with a laugh

Vicki - Yeah it sure would be easy not to come back, you're right.....I think I will go in, after all, maybe it will be the best thing to do

Toni - Good girl, you will feel better in no time

Vicki smiles

Vicki - oh yes, getting out today will be the solution to all my problems

Toni - Wise girl, once you are out of here for the day and hard at work in the shop you will forget all about being sick

Vicki smirks

Vicki - Yes, it will take my mind off my problems for sure

Inspector Rouse is with Sue in the office

Rouse - So we will do all we can to find whoever was responsible

Sue - Well I hope you can find them, that was quite a savage attack and we can't have people like that going undetected. Once they do it once they can do it again

Rouse - Yes, quite. Well, shall we get started with the interviews?

Sue - Yes sure, I will take you down to the interview room

They begin to leave the office

Rouse - I hope the women will be cooperative with me on this one

Sue - Oh I think there is a good chance they will. Most of them seemed to like Cassie and are probably very upset about what has happened to her. They are most likely going to be as keen as we are to bring the culprit to justice

Rouse - Well I certainly hope so

Sandra is walking along a corridor as she bumps into Bea

Bea - Just the person I wanted to see

Sandra - Really? So you are talking to me now, are you? What a sudden change of heart

Bea - Only because I have to, certainly not because I want to Clements

Sandra - Well, what can I do for you then?

Bea - Of course, it was you, you were the one who took her out of the Recroom, and then she never came back. You were the last one seen with her and every woman in the rec room last night knows it. That's what we will all tell Rouse. He'll piece it together and when he does you're finished

Sandra - Keep dreaming Smith! There is no proof of anything

Bea - Well even so it will plant the idea in his head. Your days here are numbered no matter what because I know you did it and I intend to get rid of you once and for all. All the women know you did it and they all feel the same as I do. You're dangerous to have around Clements, what you did to Chloe, to Josie, and now to Cassie proves that and there is no way we are going to put up with someone like you being here for much longer, you have to go...

Sandra walks past and carries on up the corridor. She looks wound up

Spider is with Rouse

Rouse - So any information you can give me would be a great help Simpson

Spider - Supposing I do know something, what's in it for me?

Rouse - Being able to have that nice warm feeling inside knowing that you did the right thing

Kelly - I thought I had better warn you that the women suspect you of being responsible for hurting Cassie

Kelly - The problem is they all saw you take her from the Recroom...I don't think you were too smart on that one frankly

Sandra - Oh don't you? It's a good thing I have other things on my mind today or I could take exception to your cheek Webster

Kelly - Yes well what are you going to do now?

Sandra - It's not so much what I am going to do, more what you are going to do

Kelly looks intrigued

Kelly - Go on?..

Sandra - I want you to tell Rouse that you were the one who hurt Cassie. Think about it, you have nothing to lose from confessing to this. You're a lifer anyway they can't give you any extra sentence that will hurt you and the women all hate you anyway so you can hardly worry about them turning against you when they already are against you

Kelly looks thoughtful

Kelly - True, I suppose I could do this for you and get you out of the shit... but I never do anything for nothing...

Sandra - Well do this for me and I won't forget the favour when I get around to helping you get top dog

Kelly nods her head, she is satisfied

Kelly -Ok I'll tell them it was me who hurt her. I'll do this favour on the understanding that you owe me a favour back

They shake hands

Bea is with Rouse

Rouse - I hope you can be more helpful than Simpson was

Bea - Well I can certainly try to be can't i

Rouse --So, what can you tell me?

Bea -The last person Cassie was seen with was Officer Clements when she left the Recroom to go up to solitary with her. I suggest it might be a good idea to interview Mrs Clements and find out what she has to say about what happened to Cassie once they left the rec room together

Toni - Anyone wants to volunteer to come along next to see Rouse?

Kelly -- Sure Miss, I'll come!

Kelly leaves with Toni

Bea - Why is she so keen to see Rouse all of a sudden?

Pixie - She says she has important information for him, Bea

Bea looks suspicious

Bea - Does she indeed?

Kelly is with Rouse

Kelly - Thank god I am in at last to see you. I must get something off my chest and prevent you from wasting time needlessly interviewing all the women. I can give you the information you need right now

Rouse - Really? Well go ahead, I'm listening

Kelly - It was me who pushed Cassie. I have to confess and try and ease my guilt a bit. I never meant for her to get so seriously hurt you see, it was just a petty argument that got out of hand

Rouse - I see, so why did you not step forward earlier when the governor gave you an opportunity to own up right away?

Kelly shrugs

Kelly - I dunno, I was scared I guess. I panicked but now I am calm and ready to admit what I done to that poor kid

Sue is in her office as the phone rings. She answers

Kelly is shown into solitary by Janice

Janice - Was it really you who attacked Cassie?

Kelly - Yes of course, why would I say it was if it wasn't?

Janice - I don't know.....because you have a deal going with Clements maybe?

Kelly - I don't have any deal going with her

Janice gives her a look and leaves the cell

Toni - Ladies there will be no more interviews today

Bea - Why not? So far only myself, Simpson, and Webster have been interviewed

Toni - The culprit has been found... Webster confessed to it just now

Bea - Did she really?

Pixie - Oh that awful woman! I knew she was the one behind it!

Bea looks like she clearly doesn't believe it

Sue is in the staff room with Vera

Sue - I thought you would want to know, the manager at the charity shop just called. McPherson didn't show up today

Vera - Typical, I was wondering when the stupid girl would blow it!

Sue - Well we don't know for sure yet that she has escaped

Vera - How else would you explain it then? Of course, she has ....anyway I couldn't care less. I have to focus on Cassie right now

Sue - Yes, Janice told me she's your daughter. You really should have said something Vera

Vera - Why? I didn't regard it as anyone else business

Sue - Well we do need to know about these types of things and you know it...we have to consider the fact that Cassie may have been attacked because of it

Vera shakes her head

Vera - No way, it can't be that. None of the women knew she was my daughter I'm sure of that. We agreed to keep it private between us

Sue - I'm sure you did, but these things have the habit of coming out. You don't need me to tell you that

Vera - No I'm sure you're wrong, it won't have been anything to do with the fact she is my daughter

Sue - I hope we find the culprit

Vera - Oh I will find her, if it's the last thing I do I will find who did this to my daughter

Toni arrives in the room

Toni - I'm glad I've found you both, we've found our culprit

Vera - Who was it?

Toni - It was Kelly Webster, she just owned up to Rouse

Sue and Vera look shocked

Bea, Pixie, and Judy are sitting together

Judy - Do you reckon Webster really did do it?

Bea - Hell I don't know, I wouldn't put it past her. I was so sure it was Clements but remember Kelly wasn't around for a long time last night. When she arrived at the Recroom I even asked her where she'd been and she told me to mind my own business

Judy - Hell yes, I remember that now. Maybe she did do it then

Pixie - Of course she did! She's a horrible woman!

Bea - But why would she do it? That's the part I don't get. What did Cassie ever do to her?

Bea sits and looks troubled

Bea - My gut feeling still tells me that Clements is involved in this somehow

Kelly is sitting on her bed in solitary as the door opens and Vera enters

Kelly - G'day Miss Bennett, what can I do for you?

Vera - You can tell me why you attacked Cassie you animal

The women are back at work as Sandra arrives in the room looking smug

Sandra -Attention please ladies

They all stop work and look at Sandra

Sandra - Now it has been brought to my attention that some of you thought that I was the one who attacked McDonald. Well you were proved wrong on that one weren't you! So from now on, I hope we will have no more of this silly nonsense!

Bea - I am not entirely convinced that Webster is telling the truth

Sandra - Your problem not mine. You really should stop this vendetta against me Smith, it will get you absolutely nowhere in the end I assure you

Bea - I always get to the truth one way or another

Sandra - On this occasion, I suggest you let it drop, accept that Webster was the one, and move on! That would be the sensible thing to do if you know what is good for you

Bea - That sounded like a threat to me?

Sandra - A threat? No, just a friendly word of advice that's all

Sandra - Well I'll leave you all to get on with your work now
