Joan is still smirking
Eileen - You need to rest now Joan, we'll be back to see you tomorrow
Ted - Yes, rest up now Sis, see you soon
Joan - Thank you both, I still can't believe this is happening. I thought I was going to die in prison
Eileen - That would have been a most awful waste, Joan
Ted - Yes, no sister of mine is going to rot away in a cell for the rest of her life, father would be heartbroken. He would be angry at me if I didn't do something to help you too
Joan - I have to be honest Ted, I didn't think you cared about me very much
Ted - I can't blame you for thinking that, but I do. I hope in time we can work on our relationship
Joan smiles and nods her head warmly
Joan - When will the new prison open?
Eileen - We hope in two weeks
Joan looks surprised
Joan - Really? that soon? Two weeks is an incredibly quick time to get a brand new building built-in
Eileen - I am having it fast-tracked, with a large number of builders working different shifts. There will be day and night shifts so that there will be builders working on the site 24 hours a day. I don't believe in wasting time. Once I want something I set about getting it achieved as quickly as possible
Joan - So this time in two weeks' time I will be a governor?
Eileen - Yes indeed
Ted - Feels good does it, Sis?
Joan smiles
Joan - It feels damn great Ted, damn great! I can't wait for the next two weeks to pass......
Sandra and Richard are in the staff room at Wentworth with Meg and Vera
Meg - Welcome back, how was your cruise?
Sandra - Oh it was just lovely thanks, most relaxing
Meg - Oh how lovely
Sandra - It was a shame to come back wasn't it Richard?
Richard smiles and nods his head
Ted pulls up outside a posh house in his car and steps out of his car. He opens the passenger door and Joan steps out
Ted - Home sweet home Joan
Joan looks at the house
Joan - It looks lovely
Ted - You will have your own en suite bathroom in your room
Ted opens the boot to take Joan's luggage out
Joan - I don't want to intrude Ted
Ted - Rubbish, you can see how big the house is. Plenty of room for you and I want you here
Joan - I still can't believe this is happening sometimes, it feels so unreal
Ted - Well believe it because it is happening. I just hope you haven't left the hospital too early. I hope you are fully ready
Joan - I am, trust me. I feel fine and ready for starting work next week. Is the prison still on schedule to be ready for one week from now?
Ted - Oh yes, I believe so. Eileen seems confident anyway. Builders working on-site around the clock to get it ready for the deadline
Richard is alone with Vera
Richard - It's Sandra's birthday next week and I am organizing a surprise meal for her in a nice restaurant. I would like to invite you to come
Vera - I'm sorry Richard but I hardly get on with Sandra
Richard - I know but I thought it would be nice. I will invite the others too. Please say you'll come, Vera?
Richard looks at her with a hopeful smile

Vera looks very reluctant
Vera - Oh ok then, I suppose I can come
Richard - Thank you Miss Bennett, it will be a lovely evening I know it will
Ted shows Joan her room
It is huge
Joan opens a door and looks at her en suite
Joan - This is gorgeous Ted
Ted - I'm glad you like it. This is your home now
Joan - I feel I will be very happy here
Ted - I want you to be happy
Joan - I feel a little tired now
Ted - Yes, I'll leave you alone for a while. Let you unpack and rest for a while. The bed is made up ready for you
Joan - Thanks, Ted
Ted - Let me know when you're ready to eat, I'll get something fixed up
Joan - Yes I will thanks
Ted leaves Joan alone
Joan lays down on the bed with a contented smile
She looks at the ceiling
A face appears on the ceiling looking down at her
Joan shakes her head with distress
Joan - No!...not you again!
Nola McKenzie chuckles
Joan - What do you want this time?
Nola - You'll give the women hell once you are governor?
Joan - Of course I damn well will
Nola - Good for you I say, good to see you haven't lost your touch
Joan smiles proudly
Joan - No chance of that McKenzie!
Exterior shot of a huge, modern-looking building that looks similar to San Quentin prison, California
There are huge barbed wire fences around the site with watchtowers on every corner
Eileen is waiting with a big mean-looking man who looks to be in his 40s, as a car pulls up. Ted and Joan step out. Joan is done up smartly in a suit and is wearing some makeup
Eileen - Good morning Joan
Joan - Morning
Joan looks at the imposing building
Joan - It's very different from the old Blackmoor
Eileen - This place is a clean, modern version of hell. An impenetrable monster made of concrete and steel
Eileen turns to the man
Eileen - Joan, this is Vern Schofield. He will be your deputy governor. He is from Colorado and has spent over 20 years working in supermax prisons in the states
The man speaks in an American accent
Vern - Good morning Miss Ferguson, pleased to meet you
They shake hands
Joan - You've come a long way from home
Vern - Mrs Raymond was very keen to have me and I thought why not. Spend a few years down under, make a change
Eileen - This is a delightful moment for me. I have my brand new prison, my head of department, my governor, and my deputy governor all together in the same place at the same time. I am extremely happy today
Ted - Shall we go in and have a look at the prison?
Eileen - Oh yes, an excellent idea, let's go
The four of them are inside the empty prison, standing in a cell block
The cell block is a three-story open plan area with the cells leading off to the sides. There is a steel staircase leading up to the higher floors where there are landings with anti-suicide metal grating connected underneath
Eileen - As you can see I have done away with the tiresome maze of corridors design that the old prison had and that all the other prisons have. This is a much more modern design
Joan - It looks great
Vern - This prison will be clean, well run...and a living hell for the inmates
Advertisement
Joan - When will the inmates start arriving?
Eileen - Within the next few days
Joan-This prison will take male and female prisoners?
Eileen - Yes it will
Vern - kept strictly separate at all times of course
Eileen - The staff will be arriving over the next few days
Vern - Some of them are also from Colorado, they came over with me at Mrs Raymond's request!
Joan - I have to hand it to you Mrs Raymond, you've certainly implemented big changes here, much bigger and more daring than Dwyer ever dared to do
Eileen - The system needed a change and I was determined to do it
Eileen - We will have a small party here later tonight, an official opening for the prison if you like. A chance for people to meet. I invited staff from the other prisons to come and we will announce you as governor Joan
Joan - Will Donovan be here?
Ted - Yes she will
Joan looks delighted
Marina is in her home with a man
Marina - Tonight's the night Clifford! Mrs Raymond will have a small party at the new prison when she will announce me as governor! I'd better get my suit ready for this special event!
Clifford - I can't tell you how pleased I am for you darling
Marina - Thanks love, I've waited years to be a governor!
Clifford - You'll be bloody good at it too
Marina - You bet I will! I can't wait to get stuck in!
Clifford - I'm very proud of you, I just wanted to say that
Marina hugs him
Marina - Thanks love, I'm proud of myself too!
Sandra opens a birthday card and smiles, she puts it on her mantelpiece along with a row of other cards
Sandra - Strange when they say many happy returns, I mean considering that this will be my last birthday...
Richard takes her in his arms and hugs her
Richard - I'll make it a special one for you, I promise. I have a surprise planned for later
Sandra - Yes I know, I wish you'd give me a clue?
Richard shakes his head and smiles cheekily
Sandra smiles too
Sandra - Oh go on, not even a small clue?
Richard - No clue darling, it will be a total surprise for you
Sandra - I bet it will be lovely, I'm looking forward to it
Sandra looks at her watch
Sandra - Well I suppose it's time we got to work...I have a little treat for the rest of the staff today
Sandra goes to the kitchen, opens the fridge, and takes a big birthday cake out
Sandra - I thought I'd take this in to share with them, they can all have a piece with their tea!
Richard - What a lovely gesture darling
Sandra - Well if I can't make a nice gesture on my birthday when can I make it?
Vera and Toni are in the staff room
Vera - I don't even want to go, I'm only going for Richard's sake. I hate that woman
Toni - I'm not keen on her either. But Richard practically begged me to come
Vera nods her head
Vera - Yes, he begged me too
Toni - And he is such a nice man, its hard to say no to him
Meg arrives
Vera - Are you coming to the meal for Sandra tonight?
Meg - No, I was invited but I'm going with Bob to the party at the new Blackmoor
Vera - Oh yes, I wanted to come to that too!
Meg- I doubt you'll miss much really. I'll tell you all about it anyway
Vera - It would have been better than this wretched meal for a woman I don't even like!
Meg - I'm sure you'll have a good time at the meal
Vera - And I'm sure I won't
Meg - Greg will be there with you
Toni - So he isn't coming to the party with you?
Meg - No I told him he should go to Sandra's meal since I couldn't make it
Vera - It will be an awful night, all of us having to pretend to like the damn woman!
Toni - It's only for a few hours Vera
Vera - It will be a few hours of pure torture!
Meg - Oh I'm sure it won't be that bad Vera
Vera - And I'm sure it will be!... I'm only doing it for Richard's sake!
Richard and Sandra arrive in the room and it all goes quiet
Sandra - Good morning everyone! It is my birthday today
Meg - Yes I heard, happy birthday!
Sandra - Thanks Mrs Morris!
Sandra lays the box with the cake in it out on the table
Sandra - To mark the occasion I brought a lovely cake in for us all!
Meg smiles
Meg - Oh lovely
Sandra - You'll have a slice won't you Miss Bennett?
Vera - I don't eat cake, I am trying to watch my weight!
They stand in awkward silence for a moment
Toni hands out a large card
Toni - This is for you, all the staff signed it
Sandra beams with delight
Sandra - Oh how sweet! Really it means a lot
Colleen and Geoff are in their flat as the doorbell goes
Colleen goes to get up as Geoff jumps up
Geoff - No Col, let me be the gentleman and get that
Colleen sits back down with a smile
Geoff goes to the door to find Eileen standing there
Richard is in his office as there is a knock at the door
Richard -Come in
Meg enters
Meg - I just wanted to say I'm sorry I can't come tonight. I have to go to the Blackmoor party with Bob
Richard - It's ok Mrs Morris, I understand
Meg - Greg will be at your meal though. He was going to come with me but I told him he should attend the meal for Sandra
Richard - Thanks Mrs Morris...I get the feeling Toni and Vera don't really want to come but they are just being nice
Meg - Oh I'm sure once they get there they will enjoy themselves
Richard - I hope so, I know my wife rubs people up the wrong way but she's not as bad as people think, not really. Not underneath it all. She's really a very nice person
Meg studies the floor
Meg - Yes well I'm sure she is.....well I suppose I should get on now
Meg leaves Richard alone
As soon as she has left the smile leaves Richard's face, he opens his desk drawer and looks at something inside
Eileen is sitting with Colleen and Geoff
Eileen - I'd really like you both to come tonight, to show there are no hard feelings
Colleen - You honestly think I want to sit there and watch while that smug cow Donovan gets announced as governor? No thank you
Geoff - I agree with Col, it would leave rather a nasty taste in my mouth
Colleen - Anyway Geoff and I don't work for the department anymore
Eileen - And that's the other thing I wanted to discuss with you both, there really was no need to resign at all. You're both welcome back as officers
Colleen - Oh you've got to be kidding, no way!
Eileen - I don't mean at Blackmoor, maybe you'd like to go to Wentworth or Barnhurst..or even Smithton!
Geoff - We'll think about it
Colleen - No we won't...well at least I won't anyway. What you decide to do, Geoff, is up to you but I won't be returning to the prison service now
Eileen - Suit yourself...but please come tonight it would mean an awful lot to me. There will be free food and free champagne
Geoff - Free champagne Col, what do you reckon eh?
Colleen - Oh alright, we'll come!... I must be bloody mad saying yes to this!
Eileen - It will be a good evening Mrs Powell, I promise you that
Joan is sitting with a consultant
Consultant - I am not at all happy about this Miss Ferguson
Joan - Why not?
Consultant - I don't feel you are ready for it yet
Joan - Nonsense, I'm as fit as a fiddle!
Consultant - While it's true you have made a remarkable recovery you are not totally well yet and you know it. There is evidence of mild brain injury
Joan - Oh I can manage, I'm tough!
Consultant - What about the hallucinations?
Joan - Not had any for days
Consultant - Really?
Joan - Yes really
Consultant - They can still return at anytime
Joan - They won't!
Consultant - I fear you may be suffering from Schizophrenia Joan
Joan chuckles and shakes her head
Joan -What rubbish!
Consultant - I would like to run a few tests
Joan - No need! I'm fine
Consultant - You are not fine and certainly not ready to take on the governorship of a high-security prison
Joan - Thanks for your concern but I think I will be the judge of that. I am absolutely fine, there is nothing wrong with me and I am ready for the challenge!
The consultant sighs with frustration

PART 2
Janice is having lunch with Ted
Janice - It's been two weeks and still you have not come up with anything on Beacham?
Ted - That's because there is nothing to find Janice, believe me, I've tried
Janice looks annoyed
Janice - There has to be something damn it!
Ted - Well if there is then she covers her tracks extremely well
Janice - I won't let her trick my dad, I just won't!
Ted - I wondered if you'd thought any more about coming to the party at the new prison tonight?
Janice - I thought about it and the answers still no, I won't come. I am not part of the prison service anymore so don't see a reason to be there
Ted - I've told you there's a place if you want it
Janice - I don't want it, I have told you that repeatedly
Ted - You are still being very stubborn about it I see
Janice - Not stubborn at all, my mind is made up and that's it...now let's hurry up and finish because I have an appointment soon
Ted looks inquisitive
Ted - An appointment?
Janice - Yes, dentist! I don't want to be late
Ted - You'll pass with flying colours, you have lovely teeth!
Pam is with Dr. Weissman
Weissman - So this is our third meeting now and I feel we have made progress, don't you?
Pam smiles and nods her head
Pam - Yeah it's been real helpful. Now I realize I was hoarding to fill an emptiness in my life, an emptiness that I was filling with junk instead of people
Weissman - Good, I'm glad.....but you're due for release today. Thought about where you will go? Back to your husband?
Pam - No way!
Weissman - I thought you'd say that.....that's why I think it's time you spoke to someone else
Pam - Who?
Weissman goes to the door and opens it
Weissman - Come in
Derek enters the room
Derek - Hi love...
Pam looks at him
Richard is waiting on a park bench as Janice joins him
Janice - What do you want Richard?
Richard - Do you have to be so cold?
Janice - I really don't know what else you expect
Richard - I'm sorry I hurt you, I still want us to have a future
Janice - I'm with someone else now
Richard looks surprised and hurt
Richard - Oh I see...
Janice - Well did you really expect me to wait around for you? Why should i?
Richard - Do you really care about this new man, whoever he is?
Janice - I enjoy his company and that's enough for now
Richard - I want you back Jan, I miss you
Janice - And what about that bitch wife of yours?
Richard looks angry
Richard - She lied to me
Janice - I told you she did! I knew but you wouldn't listen
Richard - It's her birthday today, I'm taking her for a meal tonight with some other guests. I want you to come
Janice - No way, is this some kind of joke?
Richard - No, please come
Janice - Why the devil would I want to come?
Richard - You will understand why once you're there, trust me
Janice gets up to leave
Janice - I'm not interested in you anymore, we're over
Richard - If you weren't interested in me anymore you wouldn't have come to meet me and you know it
Janice looks at Richard
Richard - Just come tonight please, there is something I want you to witness

Faeos Book One: The Stuff of Legends
A ragtag assemblage of adventurers, scraped together by seeming circumstance, investigate the theft of an ecologically essential artifact. In so doing, they find themselves embroiled (as adventurers so often do) in the larger machinations of a mischevious gnome, a determined mage or three, and a dire threat to their homes. Based on a homebrew Pathfinder campaign begun several years ago, and still running. Faeos is one part combat, one part character building, and one part entirely justified silliness. Blame any lead character weirdnesses on my players, whom I love. Blame everything else on me. Oh, and yes, this should also be tagged "Unreliable Narrator."
