Bruce is sitting behind the governor's desk as Colleen and Geoff enter the office
Bruce looks at them with surprise
Bruce - Mrs. Powell.....I wasn't sure if you'd be back in today or not
Colleen - I didn't want to stay away for longer than a day
Bruce looks at Geoff
Bruce - Hello Mr Carlson, how are you? We didn't think you'd be back so soon
Geoff - I'm fine boy and ready to get stuck in again
Colleen -Thanks for looking after things for me Bruce
Bruce - Thanks for having faith in me to do it Governor
Colleen - Any problems while I was away?
Bruce shakes his head
Bruce - The place ran like clockwork, Marina and I saw to that
Geoff gives an inquisitive look
Geoff - Marina?
Colleen - Yes Marina Donovan Sean's fiancee. You probably remember her from Woodridge?
Geoff looks unimpressed
Geoff - Oh I remember her alright
A nervous Toni is waiting in the visitor's room at Woodridge as Nigel is shown in
Nigel looks at her with a leering smirk
Nigel - Well what a nice surprise, I wasn't expecting to see you again
Toni - Have you any idea what you've done to Beth? To your wife and your kids?
Nigel - I couldn't care less about that old trout, she never liked me and I never liked her
Toni - What about Rachel and the kids then? Do you care what you did to them?
Nigel - I did it for their own good, don't you see that? I tried explaining it to Rach, stubborn as a mule as usual. She always has been stubborn
Toni - You're pathetic, sick, and pathetic
Nigel - and you're still gorgeous.... a shame to ruin the visit with a slanging match. Why don't we get friendly again like we did before
Nigel touches Toni up under the table, she pushes his hand away
Toni - Keep your dirty hands off me
Nigel - A feisty one, I like it
Nigel smirks
Nigel - If I ask nicely Mr Brown will leave us alone for 10 minutes.....isn't that right Sir?
Officer Brown - The lady doesn't look likes she wants to be left alone with you
Nigel - She does, she is just playing hard to get
Nigel leans across the table
Nigel - Come on darling, give us a kiss
Toni pushes him away in disgust
Mr Brown - Keep it nice or I'll terminate the visit
Toni - You know looks can be so unbelievably deceiving. When I first met you at that party I remember thinking what a nice normal family man you were...but it turns out your a sick murderer and pervert
Nigel - Yes well if you came all this way just to insult me, I feel I ought to tell you that I have a very thick skin so you'll be wasting your time
Toni - Actually I came to ask you about what happened after the party, you know when we were found together on the sofa
Nigel smirks
Nigel - You mean you don't remember? Well I guess its hardly surprising really, considering how much you had to drink that night
Toni - That's right, I don't remember anything, so why don't you enlighten me?
Nigel - You were all over me love....begging for it you were. You wanted it more than I did I think
Toni - I want the truth
Nigel - That is the truth
Toni leans across the table
Toni - Did you rape me?...did you slip a date rape drug in my drink?

Nigel chuckles
Toni - Answer me!
Officer Brown - Sit back in your seat and stop whispering
Toni sits back down
Nigel continues to giggle so she reaches under the table and hits him in the balls. He grimaces in pain
Toni - Someone should have chopped these off at birth you bastard
Nigel glances at Officer Brown and then leans across the table to whisper
Nigel - Ok you want to know I'll tell you, yes I did rape you...and I damn well enjoyed myself too. But if you're thinking of reporting it I'm not about to own up to it and there's no proof of anything, just your word against mine
Toni shakes her head in disgust, she has tears in her eyes
Toni - Oh you bastard!
Nigel - What's the big deal anyway? I was gentle, I never hurt ya
Officer Brown - Look you two, I won't warn you again, sit back down straight and stop whispering
Toni stands up
Toni - I'm leaving now anyway
Nigel - Aww must you leave so soon? What a pity....I'm sure Officer Brown would still be willing to leave us alone for a while if we asked him nicely
Nigel winks at Toni
Toni leaves the room, she is upset
Colleen and Geoff are alone in the office
Colleen - Perhaps you should work in reception today darling, have light duties
Geoff looks annoyed
Geoff - Absolutely not, I'm here to do a proper day's work. I'll go and see the women shortly
Colleen looks fretful
Colleen - I just hope you're not taking on too much too soon
Geoff - I'm not....anyway I want to discuss Donovan
Colleen - What about her?
Geoff - Why is she here Col? That woman is corrupt, I have never liked her. At Woodridge i suspected she was involved in bringing drugs in, organizing fights among the men, and having improper relations with some of the men among other things. I could never prove anything because Crawford thought highly of the woman
Colleen - I wanted her here Geoff
Geoff looks stunned
Geoff - Why Col? You knew about her, I told you. Why on earth would you want her here?
Colleen bows her head and looks sheepish
Colleen - Look Geoff, she was Sean's fiancee as you know.....well she wanted to come here to take care of Ferguson and I want her to do that as well
Geoff -Take care of Ferguson?...what has got into you Col? You're not corrupt
Colleen - No but damn it Geoff look at what that woman's done to you...look at what she did to Sean and to Gaffney....alright so Gaffney was a troublemaker but she didn't deserve to lose her life like that...and what about poor young Sean?
Geoff - Whatever's she's done that doesn't mean we have to take any revenge. That just makes us no better than she is. Frankly, I'm shocked at this
Colleen - Look I'm not proud of feeling this way but that woman needs to be dealt with
Geoff - She has been, she's in here for the rest of her life for a start
Colleen - Well I'm sorry but that's just not enough
Geoff - And what about the other prisoners here, do you care about their welfare while Donovan is here?
Colleen - Yes of course I do, I told her not to harm any of the other inmates
Geoff - And you believe she'll take any notice of that do you?
Geoff gets up with a look of disapproval

Geoff - I'm disappointed in you Col, I really am
Geoff leaves the office. Colleen looks upset
Marina is in a dark section of the prison doing up her shirt
She has Stud with her
Marina kisses him
Marina - You sexy beast Stud!
Stud - You're almost as good as Janice Raymond was
Marina - Janice Raymond? Who is she?
Stud - A screw who was here months ago, a real corker she was...hope you're not offended
Marina - No I'll just have to get better won't I?...soon you'll forget all about this Janice woman
They kiss again and play around
Marina - Did you get the protection money off the men?
Stud - Yes....some of them tried to resist but they didn't get very far
Marina - let's have my cut then
Stud hands a wad of cash over
Marina - There's a good boy, keeps things nice between us this way doesn't it. Bruce and I don't mind your little rackets as long as we get our cut
The rec room
The women are sitting around looking bored as Geoff arrives in the doorway
Geoff - Good morning ladies...
Joan and Roo look over, Joan smirks
Joan - So you're back Mr Carlson?
Geoff - Yes I am and I wish I could say it was a pleasure to see you, Ferguson
Joan - How's the new leg then? Must take a bit of getting used to eh?
Geoff stares at Joan
Roo looks remorseful
Roo - Mr Carlson, I'm sorry about what happened
Geoff - You're sorry are you Morgan?
Roo -Yeah I am, honestly
Geoff - The only thing you're sorry about is that your plan to escape didn't work out for you
Roo - No I'm sorry you got hurt, really
Geoff - And you Ferguson?
Joan - You're right, the only thing I'm sorry about is that the plan to escape didn't work out
Joan delivers a vicious smirk and winks at Geoff before raising her hand and doing a gun symbol at Geoffs head
Joan - Shame I missed my intended target too isn't it
Geoff is shaking with rage, he turns to leave and loses his balance, falling to the ground
Roo rushes over to help him up
Roo - Let me help you Mr Carlson
Geoff pushes her away and gets up on his own, he is shaking
Geoff - I can manage perfectly ok on my own thank you Morgan...and even if i couldn't you're the last person I would want to help me, last along with Ferguson
Roo stands head bowed as Geoff rushes out, sweat pouring down his face
Joan laughs cruelly and most of the other prisoners join in with her
Roo (angry) - STOP IT THE LOT OF YOU, CAN'T YOU SEE THE POOR BUGGERS IN DISTRESS?
Joan sneers at Roo
Joan - Since when have you cared Morgan? This saint act all of a sudden doesn't seem convincing to me
Roo - Look I just don't think there is any need to torment him that's all, we've done enough to him already
Marina is with Kate in private
Kate - So young Josie is already hooked on the stuff and some of the others are following
Marina - You surprise me, Peterson, you really do
Kate - How so?
Marina - When I first clapped eyes on you I didn't think you'd be anything special around here but you're proving to be a real asset to me....which is more than I can say about Morgan right now. She has been useless
Kate - Thank you very much
Marina - Of course, I'm still relying on you to get Ferguson hooked
Kate - Well I tried to tempt her but so far she won't bite
Marina - Then you need to try harder don't you...I heard she had a drug habit before, how hard can it be to tempt her back to it?
Kate - I will keep trying of course
Marina - Yes you just do that...she will be much more vulnerable and weaker if she's a hopeless druggie when I come around to dealing with her for the final time....justice for my Sean
Kate - Yes of course....now about young Josie, we have a problem
Marina - Oh?
Kate - Well I rather foolishly allowed her credit on the understanding she would pay up soon
Marina - Let me guess, she hasn't paid up?
Kate - Not a penny. I hate to get the girl into any trouble of course, but...
Marina nods her head
Marina - She needs a more forceful reminder now
Kate grins
Kate - That's just what I was thinking too
Marina - We'll do it when the women take their outside rec. You get her to your cell and keep her there until I arrive
Kate nods her head
Geoff is in the staff room pouring a coffee as Marina arrives. She sees him and grins
Marina - Mr Carlson, what a nice surprise to see you again
Geoff (hostile) - Yes I heard you were here....and I can't say I'm very happy about it
Marina - Pity that I was hoping we could get along a bit better now?
Geoff - No chance
Marina - Are you ok? You look rather upset?
Geoff - I'm fine, I just had to face Ferguson for the first time since.....since that incident
Marina - Ah yes, that would be enough to upset anyone. A nasty woman that one
Geoff - What are your plans, Marina?
Marina - Plans for what?
Geoff looks annoyed
Geoff - Don't play games with me, we know each other too well for that. What are your plans for Ferguson, I know you have some
Marina - Of course...and I would have thought you'd have a few plans too after what she did to you
Geoff - I won't sink to her level..or your level come to that
Marina talks in a slightly mocking tone
Marina - Of course not, you always have been too straight and decent for that right?
Geoff - That's right....and if I had my way you would be out the door
Marina - Yes I know... a pity you could never get Crawford to listen to you eh? And well now I suspect you will have equally as many difficulties getting Mrs Powell to listen too
Geoff - Colleen knows how I feel about you
Marina smirks
Marina - Do you also know that she feels the same way I do about Ferguson? And that she has given me the go-ahead to do as I please with her?
Geoff - I do and I don't know whats got into her
Marina - She must simply think the same way I do, an eye for an eye
Geoff - Col is nothing like you at all, this is a temporary lapse of judgment on her part and I will soon make her see sense
Geoff slams his coffee cup down and angrily leaves the room
Marina calls after him
Marina - DO YOU NEED A HAND? YOU LOOK A BIT UNSTEADY ON YOUR FEET THERE MR CARLSON
Geoff ignores her
Roo is alone in her cell looking at a picture of her son Danny, she has tears in her eyes
Roo - I miss ya, my little baby, I hope you're being looked after well
Roo puts the picture away and looks at one of Mike
Roo - I even miss you too you stupid fool....say g'day to Roly for me eh
Roo shakes her head with a chuckle
Roo -Gawd what's got into me, I'm going soft or something? I hate that stupid mongrel Roly!...you can tell him that from me
Roo is distracted by the sound of someone in the corridor, she looks to see Geoff passing and rushes out
Roo - Mr Carlson please, can I talk to you for a moment?
Geoff - Morgan I really have nothing to say to you
Roo - I really am sorry I swear, please believe me
Geoff - Morgan I have observed you here for some time now, you don't care what harm you cause people and you're never sorry
Roo - Hey that's just not true...sure I can be a heartless bitch I know I can. You have to be in a place like this, showing kindness and compassion can be seen as a weakness among these women you know
Geoff - Yes I know...
Roo - So can't you at least understand a little bit? I may not have shown it but I was as scared as you were during that siege. Ferguson was out of control. Fear Mr Carlson, it's everywhere in here. It's so intense you can smell it...you can almost feel it, almost taste it.....I live in fear every day. I do what I need to do to survive this rotten stinking life
Geoff - I know you do Morgan, but if you expect sympathy you won't get it from me. You put yourself here, no one else
Roo - Yes i know and I don't expect sympathy...i don't deserve sympathy i know that. Life never came with a guide book Mr Carlson. We make mistakes as we go along and then once they've been made there is no rewind button, no way to go back and change it
Roo has tears in her eyes
Roo - If I had a rewind button I'd go back a long time...ooh I'd go back years, I'd go back to a time well before I ever came to prison, long before I made the mistakes that put me in here, separated me from my son, drove a wedge between me and my sister. I'd do anything to erase it all and have a second chance....to play in the sun with my little boy, I miss him terribly....to have a life of freedom and happiness instead of oppression and fear, and to give you back your real leg again....but life just doesn't work like that does it Mr Carlson
Roo smiles sadly before walking off.
Geoff watches her go, he looks sad too
The courtyard
Josie is standing in a corner as Kate glances over. Kate approaches Joan while keeping an eye on Josie
Kate - Good afternoon Joan...
Joan - What do you want? I told you before, you and I have nothing to say to each other
Kate - Pity that I was useful during the siege remember?
Joan - Yes and we both know why that was don't we? You were hoping if you pleased me enough I wouldn't put a bullet in you
Kate - Yes well anyway I wondered if you'd thought any more on my offer?
Joan - No I haven't, I'm not at all interested
Kate - Are you sure about that? You look like you need some
Joan - All I need is for you to get out of my space......I came out for some FRESH air Peterson and while you're hanging around the air does not smell too fresh at all
Kate - Oh well suit yourself, come and find me when you change your mind
Joan (aggressive) - I won't change my mind, Peterson!
Kate - Really?
Joan - Yes really, I've put the drugs behind me for good
Kate - Well I suppose we'll see in time
Joan glares at her as she smiles serenely and glides off
Kate approaches Josie
Kate - Cheer up young lady, what's that long face for?
Josie - I need some more stuff don't i
Kate - Well I reckon I can help you out there
Josie's face lights up
Josie - Yeah?
Kate - Yeah come with me to my cell now and I'll give you something
Josie - I still can't pay you
Kate - That's ok, we'll extend the credit for a little longer shall we
Roo is alone in her cell as Marina arrives
Marina - Not going outside?
Roo - I don't feel like it, I want to be by myself
Marina pulls her off her bed and gets into her face
Marina - You've let me down big time Morgan, I thought I made it clear to you that I was only allowing you to stay alive as long as you helped me fix Ferguson? So far the only one who has been of any use to me is Peterson
Roo - I don't care if you kill me anyway, I am sick of it all now
Marina throws Roo on her bed with a look of sheer disgust
Marina - You're pathetic Morgan, full of sickening self-pity...I was led to believe you were tough and ruthless but you're as weak as they get
Roo - I've had enough of it all now that's all. I've spent years fighting to survive in here only to finally realize there's no point to it, my life's miserable, being in prison is miserable and i miss my child, I'm better off dead anyway
Marina - Oh shut up, I haven't got my violin with me today I'm afraid so it's all wasted on me
Marina pulls her gloves out of her pocket and slips them on
Marina - So you wouldn't mind if I killed you right now?
Roo - Go ahead, I want out of this hell hole
Marina grabs Roo by the throat
Marina - Perhaps you would like to be strangled to death?
Roo - Yeah why not, it's as good a way to go as any
Marina lets go with a look of contempt
Marina - You don't get out of it that easily Morgan
Marina opens Roo's locker and takes her photo album out
Marina - I've seen you looking at the pictures of your dear son, of your dear deceased boyfriend....miss them, don't you?
Roo jumps off her bed and runs over
Roo - Give that back
Marina pushes her away
Marina - I don't think so Morgan
Maria opens the album and begins to tear the photos up
Roo screams in despair and runs to fight for them
Roo - NO, NOT MY PHOTOS!
They struggle around and Marina laughs cruelly and finishes the job, she tosses all the torn photos on the floor
Marina - Now you can have them back sweetheart!...and now I have a business to attend to
Marina leaves the cell. Roo bends over and collects the ruined photos, she lays down on her bed and cries

A Standard Model of Magic
The world ended, and magic came back. The part our parents didn't expect, was for Science to break on reentry. Twenty years after the apocalypse, with our nations dismantled and hidden continents unearthed, a new generation has grown up in the wreckage of 21st century civilization. For us, the fantastic is at our doorstep and we have had no choice but to fight back. Meanwhile, the laws of nature bend and break at the whims of immortal gods, all of which are now dead and none of which are content to stay that way. But we cannot afford to give up. We are the stewards of a rewritten century, in which a little luck and a whole lot of magic might make anything possible – maybe even a world better than the one we lost. A Standard Model of Magic is a complete overhaul of my old story A Storm in the Fall. I'm afraid I was unhappy with the LitRPG elements, which I don't mind reading, but I apparently loath writing. Sorry. Once I'd made the choice to decouple the story from the OF that inspired it and reconfigure the magic system to my satisfaction, little of the original plotline survived. I will be salvaging most of my original characters, and I will keep some elements which are endemic to the genre, but that is all. I don't have an update schedule which I can commit to yet, but I will try to maintain a weekly pace.(This is currently RoyalRoad exclusive, since I'm lazy. If you find it posted elsewhere, it wasn't me and it wasn't with permission) If you're interested, I've set up a discord.
